My idea for a Heavyweight Universe
When I purchase the game, I'm going to start by running a Heavyweight universe.
I'm going to select 96 retired fighters from various eras and of varying ability and run a 18 month tournament, with the winner being crowned the World Boxing Federation's Heavyweight Champion. I'm not going to worry about WBC, WBA, IBF etc. I'm going to have just one world champion. All fighters will be at the "Beginning" stage of their career when the universe begins. The tournament will run like this: 1ST STAGE - 5 MONTHS Fighters are divided into 16 groups of 6. Each fighter fights the other members of their group, for a total of 5 fights. Each fight will be 6 rounds. The two best fighters from each group proceed to the 2nd stage. So 32 fighters qualify for the 2nd stage. 2ND STAGE - 3 MONTHS 32 fighters are divided into 8 groups of 4. Each fighter fights the other members of their group, for a total of 3 fights. Each fight will be 8 rounds. The best fighter from each group proceeds to the 3rd stage, the quarter finals. 3RD STAGE (QUARTER FINALS) - HELD 2 MONTHS AFTER 2ND STAGE The tournament is single elimination from this point on. The quarter finals are 10 round bouts. Winners proceed to semi finals. 4TH STAGE (SEMI FINALS) - HELD 3 MONTHS AFTER 3RD STAGE The semi finals are 12 rounders. Winners proceed to the 15 round WBF World Heavyweight Championship bout. 5TH STAGE (CHAMPIONSHIP BOUT) - HELD 5 MONTHS AFTER 4TH STAGE The winner will have the distinction of being the first WBF World Heavyweight Champion. The two fighters in the Championship bout will have fought in 11 bouts over an 18 month period. Boxers who are eliminated in the early stages of the tournament will be able to compete in lesser tournaments for the USBF (United Sates Boxing Federation) and EBF (European Boxing Federation) Heavyweight titles. In addition, as the months within the universe pass by, more fighters will begin their professional careers and compete on non-tournament fights. I have yet to decide which 96 fighters I will use in the tournament, but there will be (at the most) 2 or 3 of the fighters who are considered to be amongst the best 10 in the ratings. |

Nice idea, I was thinking of doing something like this. Your ideas have helped me decide on what I'm going to do, but I will have half of the 96 heavyweights retired, and the other half will be active today. Also every single fighter in the tournament will be in their 'Prime' condition to find out who is the real best hevyweight of them all.

The tournament is only meant to be the beginning of my universe, the starting point for it. Once the tournament is over, the universe will continue much like boxing does in reality. The championship will be defended, will be won and lost. As the years pass by, the fighters will move from the "beginning" stage of their careers through "pre-prime", "prime", "post-prime" and, eventually, the "end" stage. Also, as the years progress, other fighters will start their careers, all at the "beginning" stage.
I'm not so interested in staging fights that have already happened. I'm more interested in the "what if" matchups. Imagine if Joe Louis and Mike Tyson fought in the same era? Or Ali and Jack Johnson? Or Marciano and Joe Frazier? |

Yeah I'm interested in that too, your idea is good. I couldn't decide on how many groups to have in the tournament, but I thought 16 groups of 6 sounded good so thanks for helping me along with that.
All of my groups except about 1 or 2 of them have 3 'active' fighters from the original database, and 3 'retired' fighters. I also tried to do the groups so that there were great fighters in each one as well as slightly less talented fighters. An example of one of my groups is: Sonny Liston (12), Oliver McCall (9), Tom Sharkey (8), Corrie Sanders (7), Sinan Samil Sam (6) and David Defiagbon (2). So far I've only done the opening fights in Groups 1, 2 and 3 but the best fights I've seen so far are Mike Tyson (12) KO4 Derrick Jefferson (5) and my personal favourite so far, Frank Bruno vs Oleg Maskaev, where Bruno demolished Maskaev in a 3 round TKO as Maskaev could no longer defend himself after 3 knockdowns. |
