Wrong...A bully is someone who looks invincible as long as he is doing the hitting and crumbles as soon as he is stood up to...that's Tyson. And as for the language I've been here since the game was released and I don't remember you. If p***sy is too offensive to you, well, ow forget it...

not to sound happy...because I'm not...but damn if I haven't been crucified on occasion on this board because I said Tyson was washed up...and didn't have the mental capacity to train for a fight properly...especially if the fight needs to go four rounds and beyond...hopefully now...we will never hear from this guy again...because he truly has nothing to offer a pitiful heavyweight division...further proving how far he has declined.
That being said...I was stunned when I heard this result last night. |

Mike Tyson was the fighter I remember seeing from his first few bouts with Cus in his corner to working his way to the championship. He captured the public's imagination in such a way I can only compare it to Ali's effect. The big sentiment when I see him now is If only... and there are so many If only with Mike that list could go for days. I think the fork has been firmly planted in him but I have a feeling he will announce yet another comeback just starting down the ladder even further and people will still buy the ppv's and hope for the if only that isn't there. Well whatever happens we know it will be interesting.

Tyson would still be a contender [if not champion] in today's diluted HW world if he remembered what Cus taught him---don't get hit!
We've talked about this before. Early Tyson-hard to hit....would get so low he could do the limbo 30 or so punches unanswered don't help. [See my thread on "In defence of ealy fighters" referring to the article on the art of lost defence.] Maybe he did just run out of gas but any...I say again...any...250 lbs fighter pounds on you and you ain't duckin'...you goin' down Rocky! |

Mike Tyson was a terror in the ring. His lifestyle choices out of the ring affected his abilities in the ring. But the man who has never put his hand in the Lions mouth should not make unkind remarks about the sharpness of the teeth in that mouth. Gotta love this game and the posts on this site. |

make no mistake about it....Tyson STILL has fights available to to him, despite the loss, and STILL has serious drawing power,,,and as long as he's still got that 1 punch KO power, he'll get more fights,,,and we'll keep talking about him....
it was a little discouraging however to hear Freddie Roach say he can't contend for the HW title anymore ![]() |

I don't consider how Mike acted in the ring as a bully. It was pure intimidation...outside the ring he was likely to act the bully. I know when Cus was around he was a complete different person.
He was a great champion, and hopefully make the Hall of Fame, a 50-5 record is a damn good record. I personally think he should retire, but I understand he has a huge debt to pay back to the IRS. He still possesses that huge punch, he just doesnt have the hand speed that he once possessed, and his defense is nil. As far as the p***y remark, well that is a personal opinion. To me anyone that is man enough to get into the ring for 12 rounds not knowing if your face is going to beat to a pulp, definatly takes some courage. With or without the intimidation on their side. Its a tough sport, and takes guts, skill, and determination. More of those qualities than any other pro sport I can think of, unless you add Martial arts to that list. |

Ali fell apart at the end of his career too. It is just the end of Tyson's career now and that stinks. I enjoy watching him fight, he will fight more until he pays his debt off but will never be a conteneder.

I was really surprised at the result. I was rather hoping that Iron Mike could finally turn the corner on his emotional problems, win convincingly and make the HW division a more exciting place. Boxing has helped many a troubled man from the wrong neighborhood achieve a productive life. Who knows where Tyson's head is going to be now. He was very, very exciting to watch in the late 1980s. |

Tyson on any given night
I think a prime Mike Tyson (on any given night) could have beaten almost any of the great champions of the past. With weight advantage, speed, and elusive movement, a prime Mike Tyson could have overwhelmed and KO'd Joe Louis.
Yes, Louis could have gotten him out of there by slipping and countering... but what I'm saying is that it wouldn't be a stretch for him to have gotten Louis first. Had Tyson come along at the turn of the century, he may have been considered the greatest of all time - considering his physical size, power and speed. There were no $300,000,000 obstacles back then to derail a boxing career. Just women, drinking and some drugs. At least he would have had to fight more often to make money. A prime Tyson could have overwhelmed and blasted out Dempsey, Jack Johnson, Marciano... and even a prime Holmes... if he caught him. The only fighters I see him really struggling to beat on any night would be Ali, Foreman and maybe Liston. Ali may fall behind early... but he was always good at tying fighters up when hurt, or when he felt like it. And with his endurance... he probably could have extended and frustrated Tyson... either winning by decision or late round stoppage if he pressed it. Early in Tyson's career, Ali asked what he thought of him. His reply was, "He's awesome!" Foreman, with his size, reach and style, probably would have blasted Tyson out like Frazier. Even if Tyson hurt Foreman and/or floored him, he was dangerous (Foreman) when hurt (unless he had already run out of gas). It's hard seeing Tyson getting on the inside with Foreman without taking serious damage on the way. With Liston, it was a blistering jab that probably would have caused Tyson all kinds of problems on the outside. On the inside, Liston was really powerful and Tyson would have had his hands full. My point is, I don't think the latter part of his career (post-prison) should erase his prime years and accomplishments. A took a lot of fighters out in a hurry while in his prime... and those who lasted wound up clutching and grabbing their way to one-sided decision losses. |

I started following boxing in 1984 just after L.A. olympics. The first fighter I really started to follow was Mike Tyson. I got all of my friends to watch his fights (in the middle of the night). Just after you opened your bag of chips, you could close it and return to bed.
Last night I hopefully saw him fight his last fight. I was sick to my stomach to see him lose like that. He had Williams in trouble with the first and last combination that Tyson threw. After that Tyson returned to the one-punch fighter he is for the last few years. Before the bout I saw a special on satellite with Tyson's Greatest Fights. After Rooney left him you see a different Tyson. His defense was weaker and he was bobbing and jabbing less. I seriously hope that I'm wrong, but I see Tyson going the same way as was Sonny Liston. Hopefully he can get it together. I still rank Tyson in the top three of all time along with Ali and Louis. |
