Remembrance Day

Greetings to you all on this Remembrance Day. My daughter asked me a question this morning that I didn't have an answer for. In Canada we wear a red poppy to honour our fallen soldiers of foreign wars and the disabled veterans spending the rest of their lives in hospital. Does any one else wear the poppy?

We wear them in the UK, the poppy represents remembrance and symbolises the poppies that grew in the fields of France during the first world war, there will be a service held in the Royal Albert Hall (historic boxing venue) this Saturday where poppy leaves are dropped from the ceiling.

My parents were both born during WW2, and my grandfathers served in the war. I remember one of them served in India and the most action he ever saw (as far as I'm aware) was being stung by a scorpion.

Cap

Have you seen the new "Poppy" quarter the mint issued?

I think it was a great idea and I've collected a few.

Just to add on to the above.
On the 11th of November which is Remembrance Day, two former World War 11 bomber planes dropped three million poppy's petals over the River Thames in London this year.
The nearest Sunday to the 11th is when the big march past is held in London. Also that same Sunday a two minute silence is observed all over Britain in memory of men lost from World War One and onwards.

The Royal Family and many other Heads of State plus many war veterans lay their wreaths at the foot of the Cenotaph ( which is a war memorial )

Same here. The Governor General stands in for the Queen. I watched the CBC broadcast from the national war memorial in Ottawa. As always a very moving ceremony.

Thanks all for your response.

P.S. I have the poppy coins too.

What Cap described is what happens in Australia. Except at our War memorial in Canberra.
