The Ring Magazine Ratings Project

Hi Guys,
In doing my replay I have been having difficulties in deciding when to bring in fighters to get title shots which corresponds to historically in real life they became recognised "contenders" within their division.

The great yardstick for a fighter becoming a "contender" has always been the Ring magazine ratings since the 1920's.

So I thought to myself I would start trying to obrain ratings as a project for my (and others universes) and also as a historical project which is of general use for boxing fans.

My own Ring magazine collection is very sketchy and I have only a few years mainly in the mid to late 1980's collected, but with everyone's help I am willing to keep a master document of all the collected top ten ratings as they come in and to pass this over to anyone who would find it valuable.

If you would be willing or able to give me any information on ratings pls reply here or e mail me at djday45@yahoo.co.uk so I can get the project rolling.

I f any one knows of any websites holding any historical ratings pls also let me know.

Dean,

I just sent you an email with an attached PDF file that I'd scanned that I now realize was very big in size by how I scanned it. I apologize if it causes you some problems "clogging up" your incoming email. If was a pdf of some ring rankings I'd had.

About all I can offer to help is a copy of the latest edition with the latest ratings. It's the first issue I've ever bought.

I have a lot of them throughout the early 90's and a few in the late 80's.
I will give you a list of magazines that I have ASAP.

I am trying to buy a lot of Ring magazines from a guy through internet, they are from the 70's and 80's. But I don't have them yet.

Hi guys,
thks, any help would be much appreciated. Thks Rocco for the year end ratings.

I must admit I am a bit undecided as to try and get rankings on a month by month basis (using my collection and others for this) or to go with the simpler year end ratings like the one you sent over.

One part of me says the monthy ratings would be daunting to gather, but at the same time would be more valuable as you would see (i assume) many fighters sneak into the top ten for a couple of months before they were found out and tumbled back out of the rankings lol.

thoughts anyone?

I have also put requests on the boxing sites boxrec, cyber boxing zone and talk boxing.

Anyone know of any other good foroms to ask for info?

Bonedwarf, I find it hard obtaining the ring in the uk over the last few years so any recent ratings would be much appreciated.

What I'll do is take my whizzo digital camera and simply photograph the page for you and upload it. I've been experimenting doing that with other stuff rather than scanning it and it works surprisingly well.

I'll get on it and hopefully get it up later tonight.

Edit to add: Got the pictures taken. Just can't do anything with them until I'm at my other computer. Will post the link later on once I've got them up and online. They'll be 1600x1200 so you can actually read them

Current Ring Ratings

The pictures aren't great. There's 4 JPEG's in the archive. I think you can make out all the entries from the pictures.

Hope this is okay. Let me know if it's not, I'll try and do it again.

Wink

I've got quite a few Ring magazines which I wouldn't mind sending the rankings to you on a regular basis. They're mainly from this decade but I also have one from the sixties.

I'm also looking for the statas to Bernard Hopkins for TBCB that I accidentally erased. You couldn't help me out could you by sending them to kylalord@cv64ah.fsnet.co.uk or telling me where I can find them on the internet.

Ian.
