2004 v.s. 1985 HEAVYWEIGHTS

I pitting the top 10, today versus the top 10 from rign magazine in December of 1985.

I have already replayed the bottome 3 bouts. The rest will be finished over the next couple of days.

#10 Jamel McCline v.s. M. Dokes
-- Dokes wins 5 of the first 6 rounds on two of the cards and McCline wins 5 of the last 6 on all 3 to win by the scores of: 116-113 twice and 117-111. Dokes was disappointed after the bout. No knockdows and the bout was pretty boring.

#9 H. Rahman v.s. M. Weaver
-- Would be the bout of the night on any card. Rahman caused a gash over Weaver's right eyebrow in the first and dropped him in the scond and third. Weaver rallys wining the final four rounds and dropping Rahman in the final seconds forcing the following scoring: 114-113 Weaver 113-113 113-113 for a majority draw. Both fighter stated that they were too tired to do it again tonight.

#8 N. Valuev v.s. C. Williams
-- Mismatch. Valuev stepped up in competition and barely landed a punch. Williams takes him out with a right/left combe in the 4th round.

Current score 2004 (1) 1985 (1) Draw (1)

#7 Danny Williams v.s. Trevor Burbick
#6 Wladimire Klitschko v.s. Gerrie Coetzee
#5 Lamond Brewster v.s. Greg Page
#4 James Toney v.s. Tony Tubbs
#3 Joe Mesi v.s. Tim Witherspoon
#2 John Ruiz v.s. Larry Holmes * let Ruiz try to hold now!
#1 Chris Byrd v.s. Pinklon Thomas
Ch Vitali Klitschko v.s. Michael Spinks

Let's see or Spinks can run rings around Klitschko.

Nice matchups though.

#7-- In a rather uneventfull bout, Trevor Burbick plods his way to a split win over Danny Williams 115-111, 115-112, 113-114. No Knockdowns......Williams was hurt several times.

#6-- Gerrie Coetzee wins rounds two and three but takes a right cross in the middle of the 4th, goes down and doesn't get up. W. Klischko wins via KO.

#5-- "Upset" Lamon Brewster knocks down Greg Page 5 times, including twice in the 11th to take a huge margin win over Page, who historically had bad nights. 117-106, 115-108, 116-108.

#4-- James "lights out" Toney nearly stops Tony "TNT" Tubbs in the 6th (2 pt round) and rallys in the last 3 rounds to pull out a close win. Toney lands 60 more punches than does Tubbs..........114-113 twice, 115-112.

#3-- Tim Witherspoon, drops Joe "baby" Mesi three times and Tim is knocked down by Mesi in the 5th. Witherspoon, ahead 86-82 on all three cards, drops Joe like he was shot in the 10th and Richard Steel steps in and stops the fight before Tim kills him. Witherspoon KO10.

just gave me an interesting idea for a different kind of universe and i'm not sure if it's been mentioned before. put together teams-whether they be by weight class, era, rating, or whatever-and have team competitions like they do for high school wrestling with different amount of points being awarded for knockouts and just regular wins. team "head coaches" could be the different trainers, with that trainer being in the corner of every fighter on his team. the number of ways to put teams together is endless and seems like a great way to waste away a couple nights. i'll post if i get ambitious and do this.

Back in the days when there used to be a lull between Basketball and the start of Baseball Season, a couple of my friends and I used to choose up boxing teams with the old Title Bout board game.

Our wives would go shopping and we would give minimal attention to the children and there was always plenty of "whooping and Hollering" around the table.

Team boxing is a lot of fun and fulfills a lot of fantasy at the same time.

Current Score 2004 (4) 1985 (2) Draw (1)

MJ

--#2 John Ruiz v.s. Larry Holmes
Ruiz is strong through the first two winning both rounds on all three cards. Holmes wins rounds 4 and 5 but is dropped twice by Ruiz' right hands in round 6. Holmes takes Ruiz apart in 7-10 with Jabs and combinations. Holmes drops Ruiz for the count in round 11 taking the KO win. Holmes KO11

--#1 Chris Byrd v.s. Pinklon Thomas
Thomas was disappointing in this one. Byrd dipped and ducked causing Thomas to only score more than 10 points in 3 of the 12 rounds. There were no knockdowns nor was anyone ever hurt. Byrd coasts to a win with the following scores: 115-113, 118-110, 117-111.

-- Championship Vitali Klitschko v.s. Michael Spinks
Michael Spinks wins the first round but it was all down hill from there. Klitschko knocks him down four times over the next four rounds causing Elmo Adolph to step in and stop the blood bath in the middle of the 5th round. Vitali was just too big for the Jink.

-- final score 2004 (6) 1985 (3) draw (1)

Just shows what an awful bunch we were stuck with back in the 80s. However, I think Coetzee would have done to Vlad what Sanders did.

Wish I'd thought of this idea, since I'd feel like was stealing it if I did anything like that.

I did come up with an idea the other day. I got a boxing book out of the library, and for most divisions it lists every champion from about the mid seventies onwards. I had an idea of simming all the bouts. So Boxer X defends his belt for the second time against Boxer Y. In reality, Boxer Y won. However, in the sim, Boxer X wins, meaning X will face the guy that, in reality, Y faced for his first defence.

It might wind up being pretty historically wrong, but I thought it'd be an interesting experiment.

I do like this idea of creating teams. So many possibilities...
