Arrest Warrant Issued For Mayweather
Mayweather misses trial; arrest warrant issued
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — An arrest warrant has been issued for two-time world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., who failed to appear at a trial in which he is accused of kicking a bouncer at a bar. The 27-year-old boxer was to go on trial Thursday on a misdemeanor assault and battery charge. Judge Michael Christensen issued a bench warrant for the arrest, a court clerk said Friday. If convicted, Mayweather could be sentenced to up to 93 days in jail. A telephone message seeking comment was left Friday afternoon for Larry Willey, a Grand Rapids lawyer representing Mayweather in the case. William Morris, a part-time bouncer at The Radio Tavern, told police he was knocked to the floor of the bar on Dec. 18, 2003, when a man other than Mayweather broke a bottle over his head. While he was down, Mayweather kicked him, Morris said. In June, Mayweather was convicted of misdemeanor battery stemming from a fight in August 2003 with two women inside a Las Vegas nightclub. Mayweather grew up in Grand Rapids but now lives and trains in Las Vegas. He received a suspended jail sentence of one year and was ordered to undergo “impulse-control” counseling. If he could not stay out of trouble for a year, he would spend a year in prison, the judge said. Mayweather also faces a charge of felony domestic violence for allegedly striking the mother of his three children at a Las Vegas nightclub on Dec. 27, 2003. Trial on that charge is scheduled for Aug. 1, 2005. He pleaded guilty two years ago to two charges of misdemeanor domestic violence. The felony domestic violence charge can carry a prison sentence of up to five years and a $10,000 fine. Mayweather (31-0, 21 knockouts) is scheduled to fight Jan. 22 in Miami against Henry Bruseles (21-2-1, 14 knockouts) of Puerto Rico in a superlightweight elimination bout. The 1996 Olympian will be fighting for the second time in that weight class after winning superfeatherweight and lightweight crowns. |

Sometimes I just don't get it. All the talent these guys have, all the money they're making, and they're out acting like complete morons and thugs. Isn't that what some of these guys start fighting for? So they can get out of the trouble they were in growing up, get away from the crime and give their families a better life? Granted, there are some head cases that just can't be helped, but come on now. Mayweather, Spadafora...it's a shame.
I know it's all old news in boxing, but it still makes me shake my head ![]() |

I know what you mean Bronx. These guys have to use their fists to fight their way out of the ghetto but after they've arrived, the smart ones get paid to beat people up then.
Reminds me of an old Bob Hope joke when he was talking about the upcoming Hagler/Leonard bout: "Where else can you see 2 millionaires beating each others brains out?" |
