Million Dollar Baby - OT

Sorry for the OT post, but I'm really PO'd about all the attention given to the film Million Dollar Baby. No, I haven't seen the film yet and, based on what I know about it, I don't intend to.

I'd like to see a good BOXING movie, not a soap opera.

Now Ali was a really good boxing movie. Hopefully the new movie about Jim Braddock will also be good.

I would like to see a good boxing movie too. But you are completly missing the point. It was never intended to be a boxing movie or even a sports movie.
It is a drama and a damn good one at that.
Best movie of the year.

Boxing was used as a backdrop for the movies themes. However the fight scenes looked good, Lucia Riker was in it and i think Chevelle Hollebeck was too. Hillary Swank did a good job and will get best Actress in my opinion. It reminded me of Shawshank Redemption part Rocky, and some other movies. Putting aside whether one likes female boxing, it handled the subject matter well.

It was a good movie. Not great. Not outstanding. Not fabulous. But just a good movie. My wife and I agree on this and we've been trying to figure out why all the hype and all the reviews that rave about it.

The best we can come up with is that there are so many bad movies released that when a good one comes out, it gets elevated to greatness status.

I also do not recommend seeing this immediately after seeing "Hotel Rwanda". (By this I mean within 30 minutes). You want an absorbing movie, then "Hotel Rwanda" is it. After that, pretty much anything will pale in comparison.

If you want a great movie directed by and starring Clint Eastwood, watch "Unforgiven". If you want a great Hillary Swank movie, watch "Boys Don't Cry".

If you want good, formulamatic soap with what I thought were pretty silly looking fight scenes, watch "Million Dollar Baby". And where did that title come from? I thought it was a Busby Berkley musical title. I kept waiting for the dance scenes.

The movie is based on one of the short stories in the book "Rope Burns."

I definitely intend to see this movie soon.

And "Ali" sucked. I actually walked out of the theater.

I totally agree although I didn't go to a theatre to see it and then walk out of the theatre. However, I did walk out of my family room.

When they make "Fresh Boxer of Stillman's Gym" then perhaps Will Smith should be a boxer. I think Billy Crystal could have played Ali better than Will Smith.

Ali was brutal!!

I mean BRUTAL!!

I love Michael Mann ( loved the insider...and even liked Collateral). I love Jamie Foxx ( he was good in Ali...but obviously not as good as he was in Ray)...and I hate The fresh prince of Bel Aire ( Will Smith)

At times Ali seemed like a music video for Jazz!

Will Smith IMO is like Jim Carey. Nobody wants to see Jim Carey do Eternal Truman, they want to see him talk out of his ass. Just like nobody wants to see Will Smith do romantic comedies or serious movies. I want to see him chase aliens or robots or bad guys.

Payin money to see these two "act" is like paying money to see Jenna Jameson "act". You aren't paying for what they are good at.

She's an author. What's wrong with admitting you read?

Well I would say if you won't admit you know who Jenna is then maybe you and Lennox Lewis can sit with his mother, have a spot of tea, and pet his poodle.

Ali the movie stunk, David Alan Grier did a better Ali in In Living Color than Will Smith did.

But you gotta love James Toney as Frazier and Jamie Foxx as Bundini Houdini

Just because I like to repeat myself, and no one said anything about any of these movies (or just anything) when I previously posted it, I will do this again.

Here are my personal top 10 movies that use boxing.

The Set-Up (1949) Robert Ryan stars. It's about a fixed fight. Great.

Body and Soul (1947) John Garfield stars. Slum kid to champion and bucks the mob. Most realistic fight scenes in a movie up to that time.

Champion (1949) Early Kirk Douglas hit. "Fighting or loving he was the champion"--from the poster

Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962) Anthony Quinn and Jackie Gleason. Also has a very young fighter named Cassius Clay in it. It was originally a TV drama written by Rod Serling that was later made into this wonderful film.

Gentleman Jim (1942) The story (Hollywood style) of James Corbett. It stars Errol Flynn and I cry when John L. Sullivan (played by Ward Bond) gives the belt to Corbett.

Raging Bull (1980) Jake LaMotta, Martin Scorcese, and Robert DeNiro. What more could you want.

The Harder they Fall (1956) Humphrey Bogart in his final film as a press agent for a boxer who can't fight. Supposedly based on Primo Carnera and corruption in boxing. (Corruption? Boxing? Who are they kidding).

The Great White Hope (1970) Anything with James Earl Jones is worth seeing. This was the hit movie based on the hit play about Jack Johnson.

Golden Boy (1939) The movie that made William Holden a star. He could box and he could play the violin. He had to choose which to do.

City For Conquest (1940) Jimmy Cagney battles through the fight ranks. Does he make it or does tragedy strike?

Raging Bull while being the greatest sport film ever made is not really a boxing movie either IMO.
It is more of a character study.

Ali sucked.

Know what I would like to see?
A boxing movie filmed like a documentary using those camaras that are on wires and hang over football fields and slide along to cover all the angles.
Use those to film a match so you can get all sorts of 3-d angles.
Then make it an IMAX movie.

*drools*
