Colley Wallace HW

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Coley Wallace, who knocked out Rocky Marciano in an amateur bout and played Joe Louis in two movies has died. He was 77.

Wallace died in a Manhattan hospital Sunday of heart failure, his attorney and friend Raymond Sussman said Sunday.

Wallace had a record of 20-7-0 in six years as a professional, but his most memorable moment came as an amateur in 1948, when he defeated Marciano in the New York Golden Gloves tournament. It is believed that the defeat was the only loss ever by Marciano, who went on to win the heavyweight championship and was unbeaten in 49 fights.

"People like Muhammad Ali looked up to him because when they were learning how to box, he was one of the African-American boxers of note," Sussman said.

Wallace is best known for twice portraying Joe Louis on film, once in "The Joe Louis Story" in 1953 and again in Martin Scorsese's "Raging Bull" in 1980.

Wallace also starred in "Carib Gold" in 1957 and played a part in "Rooftops" in 1989.

He is survived by his wife, Pearlie-May, and a daughter Pat.

I've never used Wallace in the game. I just simulated him twice against Stan Ward, TKO 4 (cuts) W15 both in the favor of Wallace. Everyones favorite fighter, Gerhard Zech, knocked Wallace down 5 times in route to a 13th round stoppage.

I have been using Wallace for a while now. He is 15(7)-19-4 currently ranked 60th.

Of note:

Scored an 8th round TKO over Primo Carnera

Drew with Gerry Cooney over 12 in a minor title bout

Knocked Pedro Agosto out in three

Knocked Chuck Wepner out in four

Drew with Tommy Morrison

It was a decision win over 3 rounds for Wallace.
But most sports writers and the fans thought Marciano was robbed.
Rocky in fact lost another 3 fights when he first started as an amateur.

Marciano as an amateur Won 8 lost 4 KO 7 he was never knocked out.
Lost to Ted Lester disqualified in 3
Lost to Joe D'Angelis in 3
Lost to Bob Girard in 3
Lost to Coley Wallace in 3

In the army Marciano had about 30 fights won all most by KO.
Then turned pro and learnt to fight, and the rest as they say is History
