Regarding the old heavyweights...

Most of the old heavyweights, ie. from the beginning of the 20th century weighed less than 200 pounds. Has anyone ever run a universe set in the present day, using some of the old heavyweights where you assume that they are heavier than they were in real life? If you have, did you edit any of the stats to reflect this? I have a number of the older guys in my universe, and I think that they might have to beef themselves up a bit to compete with some of the bigger guys.

I have moved all of my sub-200 lb. "heavyweights" to the cruiser division. (Assuming they weigh between 176-199 lbs.) This, in my opinion, gives more realistic results against modern heavies. 167 lb. "heavyweight" Bob Fitzsimmons has been moved to super-middle.

The fighters from even 50 years ago would be heavier today do to the fact that people are just larger and more knowledge on diet and how it effects the body. Jack Dempsey, who scaled in at 187 for the Willard fight, would tip the scales at around 205-210 today.

That said, fighters from that era were in better shape due to more roadwork and proper training. Today's boxers lift far too much weights which isn't functional to what they must achieve in the ring. Chopping wood, push-ups, pull-ups, dips, and lunges.....(combat training) should be the workout program for all fighters.

Why do so many fighters concentrate on weight lifting? Because they get an advantage from it. If there were no advantage, they wouldn't do it. As you know, fighters are always looking for that extra edge. These days, weight lifing is considered a necessary part of training.

I really don't think the extra weight helps. Today's heavyweights can do all the high tech training they want. They still fight like crap. Who actually thinks that the likes of Dempsey and Louis would not have a walk in the park against the guys today?

The guys today move around slower, and I think the weight weighs them down and they therefore don't have much stamina and don't throw alot of punches.

Vitali is the best heavyweight out there, and he's not very bulky. Two of the best contenders, Toney and Byrd, happen to be smaller guys.

The only guy I can think of that benifited form added bulkiness is holyfield, and even he couldn't fight at the same pace that he did when he was a cruiserweight fight Qawi.

I know Dempsey and others used The Charles Atlas Dynamic Tension program which is on par with weight lifting.

Why do people smoke and drink.... Weight lifting does nothing for you boxing wise.....every trainer worth 2 cents has told me this and I've found it out for myself. I've actually boxed.

No, it wasn't on par with weight lifting. Dempsey used pullys to row with. Dempsey also did a few hundred pull-ups per day.

Holyfield had issues when he was lifting weights. Lou Duva would wonder what excuse he was going to use when he came to the gym to get out of sparring. No wonder Bowe and Moorer took him.

I agree that today's heavies carry waaaaaaaaay too much body weight around.
