Introduce Self/Questions

I just purchased TBCB and discovered the forum. I thought I'd introduce myself--and ask a couple of questions.

I've been a Title Bout game fan since I purchased the board game in the 70's. I also owned a computer version that was put out in the 80's. I rediscovered the game when I bought Title Fight Pro Boxing a couple of years ago. I haven't been able to put TBCG down since I bought it several days ago.

I have many questions about the technical aspects of the game and about gamers prefernces in playing the game. I'll start with two in both categories.
How many use the hide the fighter points option? It seems to me give an even more realistic feel to the game. You have to pay closer attention to the commentary and the fighters' conditions, but like a real fight that is no guarantee.

My other question (for now) relates to how the referees are rated as judges. I like the idea of allowing the ref to score in the older fights but was curious if they have biases and scoring tendencies like the judges. I read another post that suggested that it is built into the rating of the referee but wondered if anyone has more specific info.
Thanks

John

Welcome aboard yardmaster

I agree with your first question, I hide the fighter points.

Can't help much on the second one about the referees because I mainly use the 3 judges for all my fights.

Ask as many questions as you wouild like, someone here will be glad to answer.

John--

I hide the points too. If I want to know how a fight looks like it's progressing, I click the scorecard button to see how our ringside expert is judging the thing. Of course, there have been times when the judges have gone COMPLETELY the opposite direction, but that's usually due to biases and so on.

I'd like to see biases for refs too. Maybe in TBCB 2?

And I of course cannot reply to a post without plugging myself. I built a Random Fighter Generator, so if you make fictional fighters, you may want to check it out. It's free and easy.

Good to see new faces around here!

Welcome aboard. I too played the board game for seemingly ever (there are a lot of this type around these parts).

1) I don't hide the points. Not because I like the points but because I never realized that you could hide them. sheeesh. I have been muttering about that under my breath in quiet for months - I'm REALY glad you showed up.

2) I never analized the judges v. refs issue. I use the three judges because I seemed to get fewer "bad" decisions that way, but that could just be misperception on my part.

Glad to meet you,

Christopher

Welcome aboard ... I'm one that doesn't hide the points because I see myself more as the commissioner of my universe. Also I like to score the fights myself and the points give me a starting point for that.

I also use 3 judges so can't help you on the referee issue.

I started out hiding points & reading the commentary more closely. After many hundreds of fights, though, I began speeding the bouts up and paying more attention to the animation (in part because of the repetition in the commentary & in part to speed along my universe). Once I moved to more animation viewing I switched to watching the points b/c it helps you tell when punches are landing or missing.

My only comment on the second issue is that I fairly quickly moved away from any ref scored fights & went the 3 judge route exclusively. Too many bad decisions (you still get enough bad decisions with 3 judges to keep it realistic).

Hey there Yard and welcome, I too didn't realize you could hide the points. I might have to give that a try. I also use the Unified rules of boxing approach. I think with the Ref Bias issue which is the same with the judges there is probably a way in the next version they could do a ref bias but i think the developers are worried about lawsuits if they were to declare this or that ref to be a hometown ref or whatever the bias might be. But I bet they could do it the same way they do with judges.

Welcome to the TBCB world.
Personally, I don't hide the points, no reason really, but I can see where it would make the fight more interesting.
As far as the ref/judging issue...I guess I'll join the club and say I don't know either

Thanks for your comments.
One possibility on the ref vs. judge issue--for someone like me who is a stickler for historical accuracy--would be to create a judge who is "duplicate" of the referee and simply meke him one of the three judges.

I didn't realize that the judges had a bias already programmed in. Or am I reading this thread wrong? Whenever I have gone into the judges screen, all of them have a bias rating of "none". Have some of you guys changed the bias ratings? If you have, I would really be interested in seeing a list or something which shows what judges have what bias rating. Would it be possible for someone to provide the changes they made? The whole group could benefit from something like that... not just me.

I did mine random the same way, i remember there was talk at one time of compiling that list as well as matching trainers and cutmen with fighters but I don't think it ever went pass the discussion phase.
