Speaking of the pre PPV days:
My dad, grandfather and I went to see the Duran/Leonard Montreal fight on closed circuit at the Hartford Civic Center (1980). They had a live undercard for us that included Starling. The feed from Montreal was delayed a bit and the crowd got restless, but what a great night! With PPV and the high priced casino bouts, we'll unfortunately never have another event like that in Hartford. Christopher

What was it, the 1st round that is mentioned as the "classic" round for a boxing match? The one people just sat forward on their seats and leaned forward hardly breathing just agape at all the action in the whole round?
Probably the best round in history, IMO. There were others, but this was one I saw.. and unbelievable too.

Man . . . 20 years . . . I do feel old.
I watched the fight live on closed circuit from the now demolished Kingdome in Seattle (also saw Holmes/Cooney there). Terrible sound . . . not very good picture quality. Once the bell rang, though, none of that mattered. The amazing thing was that, when that first round began, the whole crowd was on its feet until the fight ended. Even between rounds no one sat down. You knew you'd just witnessed something special. One of the best $20 I ever spent. |

I met Marvin Hagler at Mohegan Sun arena, this summer, and he looked like he could still tear it up. He looked at me suspiciously, which is the most common reaction I get. Bert Randolph Sugar was walking around with his cigar, and the women were hanging off to the sides, during the weigh-ins. I wonder why?
The first fight I saw of Marvin Hagler's was a fight I accidently stumbled across, on TV. That night, he UPSET Sugar Ray Seales, a recent gold medal winner. I remember going to the Garde Theatre in New London, to see Hagler-Leonard, and I thought Leonard beat him cleanly, at the time, because my brother-in-law was a big Leonard fan, cheering wildly, from two feet away, at every punch the underdog Leonard threw. He convinced me. Then, I saw a replay on TV, without my brother-in-law there, and suddenly it became a very close fight. |

I was 7 when this fight occured (and boxing was not big in my house), so I didn't see it when it happened. I first saw the fight on ESPN as a "Superfight" and was pretty amazed. The first round was an awesome round.

Agree with all - This was simply an amazing fight - (with the first round being the best round I've ever seen in boxing) -
Being from just outside Detriot and my dad being a big boxing fan.....Our family became big supporters of the "Motor City Cobra" long before he was the "Hit Man" - Damn! - I still say if Hagler doesn't get that standing 8 count (to check his cut) in the 2nd round Tommy ends it then and there - (but maybe not) - Tommy should have boxed Hagler for the first 6 rounds and took him out later - his pride got the better of him - |

Hagler-Hearns
Absolutely agree Meade, but I am not sure he had the luxury of following that plan...
I had heard that Steward was livid before the fight because he came in and saw a couple of guys massaging Hearns legs right before he went out to fight. I guess getting a massage really weakens the muscles, so he went in feeling as though he had to go after him right away. On top of that, he broke his hand early on as well. I want to say that it happened sometime in the 2nd round. Anyway, it's easy to see as he really started to throw more "clubbing" right hands that were not nearly as effective. The coolest thing, to me, is how Hearns handled himself in the aftermath of the fight. He acknowledged that those things happened, but he never used them as an excuse. He just said that it was a good fight and that he hoped the fans enjoyed it. I have always thought that Hearns was not just a great fighter, but a real class guy as well. Has anyone gotten jobbed much worse than he did in his second fight with Leonard? Jeff |

I loved hagler; I loved Hit Man even more. Great fight but man, Hearns was KNOCKED OUT!!! Did you see his face? Out on his feet. Highly entertaining but sad as well. At least he knocked Duran out cold. Hearns-Leonard I was great but again that hurt. Second fight Hearns CLEARLY was ripped off but we all know Hearns won that one at least.

I remember that fight as if it was last night. After it was over, I went out and ran 5 miles.

I saw a tape of Leonard Hearns II just the other day and I thought the draw was fair. AM I CRAZY????
1. I thought Leonard deserved a 10-8 in the 5th and maybe in the 12th as well. 2. I thought the second knockdown scored by Hearns, Leonard dominated the rest of the round so it could be 10-9 Hearns, not 10-8. 3. I'm not a Leonard nut-hugger or anything. I just saw the fight to see what all the fuss about the robbery was about and I thought it coulda gone either way. And yes I was wearing glasses. LOL |
