John Ruiz ?
Is he too good in the game?
I have Ruiz in my F.H.F. universe in the inside the ropes forum, and he is doing quite well. I am not very knowledgable about the current crop of boxers, but a couple of people I do know that are say the Ruiz cant punch his way out of a wet paper bag, yet TBCB has him with pretty decent punching power. I would just like to see what those of you out the think on the subject. Thanks Steve |

His ratings seem about right to me. As I recall, I think his record is 4-4 in my universe. He lost a 15UD to Michael Spinks (my WBA HW champ) in Michael's last defense. It was a pretty good fight with both fighters dropping the other guy but Spinks was busier & dropped Ruiz 3 to 1 - off the top of my head.

Another look at John Ruiz
I think John Ruiz has basically become the kind of guy most hard-core boxing fans love to hate.
He's style of clutching, grabbing, throwing some punches... along with terrible acting - (when it benefits him to do so - behind on points, etc.) he'll fall to the floor, writhing in agony, as though he were just hit with an 18 punch combination - capped off with a huge Tyson-like uppercut, all to the groin. His most apparent personality trait seems to be the LACK of personality. Like vanilla without the vanilla flavor. Don't get me wrong, he seems to be a great guy and a genuine family man. But most of us on this board would probably raise a glass and make a toast following his knockout lose (whenever it finally comes). Rating him in the game is hard. That's because he wins a lot of close calls and wins "ugly" at that. To have him perform similarly in the game, you're almost forced to overrate him. Roy Jones beat him for the title without running from him and took his punches without falling (just goes to show how far Jones has deteriorated) I would like to see Ruiz fight a rematch with David Tua who starched him in the first round of their meeting several years back. At this point, he's probably my favorite fighter to root against! Jim |

I personally think that yes, Ruiz is a very sluggish and unattractive fighter to watch, but somehow finds a way to win against the very best opponents on offer. To think of Ruiz as an undisputed heavyweight champion makes us all shudder but you have to give him credit for the opponents he has beaten. But if you want a complete and correct analysis on the John Ruiz inside the ring, listen to Larry Merchant!
As for his rating in TB, I think Ruiz fights just as he does in real life on the game. He clinches and fights dirty a lot and I'd say an overall rating of 7 is fair. On one of my games he has just lost his WBO title to Kevin McBride after being KO'd in the 10th (McBride lost the title in his first defence, against Brewster). Also in my heavyweight universe (check out the inside the ropes forum) Ruiz lost to Henry Akinwande. So he is beatable but is more than good enough to grind out results. |

I may be in the minority, but I don't mind watching Ruiz. He frustrates people, it's not a style I like, but it is A style and alright to watch from that perspective. I wish him no ill will.
That said, it would only take a small crop of decent heavies to push him to the sidelines in the division - pretty sad state of ship these days. Christopher

It seems he has a knack to get people to fight down to his level, and then he just beats them at his game of hitting, clutching and mauling, which he does very well. There is hardly a fight of his I remember where I don't recall thinking or saying, "What the hell is wrong with [insert opponent here] he should be kicking Ruiz' Ass." The Golota fight was a perfect example, Andrew had him hurt, seemed to be able to land when he let his hands go, but it was almost like he was giving Ruiz too much respect. Then he got pulled into the grab and wrestle game and got totally away from what he should have been doing, even as his corner pleaded with him to get off. I guess in a sense you need to give Ruiz a lot of credit, he imposes his style on people and finds a way to win.

As for Ruiz's ratings in the game, he retired from my universe about a year ago. When he first began his career in my universe I remember looking at his ratings & thinking they seemed a bit inflated. I recall at the time thinking that his ability to stop opponents, in particular, appeared as if it might turn out to be little high.
However, viewing his entire career in retrospect, I think he ended up with a fairly realistic fight record. Looking at the fights he won and lost (and how those victories/losses occurred) and given the nature of his competition in the division at the time, I think he came out just about right in my universe. |

Ruiz is dull, which isn't a bad thing, but his trainer more than makes up for it. I can't wait to see the trainer and Toney get into a fight at the end of the month. I also can't stand to watch him fight, but I'll have to pull for him against Toney. The blown up, very blown up middleweight, is just too much of an a_ _ to pull for.
In my opinion, Ruiz will drop Toney and win via TKO very late. MJ

I kind of agree with Conn here...I can watch him fight. hey, he wins and he's certainly not he most gifted guy. I had RJJ to beat him so I won that night but he's still there. I personally think he and Tyson would be interesting.

I view Ruiz and his jab and grab style as a less talented version of Ernie Terrell. I don't like watching him. but at least he isn't bloated like jam-a-meal
