Well, i dont fully understand the legal aspects of that. So dont hold me to this. But i do know that if any fighter that we have in the game was to complain then he would be removed. This boxing game i am pretty sure is in fact making very little money, i think its just about covering its costs. As we all know boxing is becoming a minor sport today so this game is produced by people who love the fight game for the few who want a decent boxing simulation. If it was purely a money venture the obvious route to take would be an arcade game i think.
I would imagine they could get around the legal side of it like a lot of Company's do by not using for example a Mike Tyson in the game but by calling the fighter Bill Byson. Then of course after the customer has bought the game he can easy change that name himself back to Mike Tyson. All in all this game i know has got people who had no interest in boxing now becoming fight fans, and in the long run this has to be a good thing for boxing in general. Of course and i mean this with all respect to the Company, if this small band of boxing lovers who produce this great little game had big complaints and had to start paying royalties ( is it ? ) i feel they could not exist. Then i think that this would be the end of in my humble opinion one of the only decent fight simulation on the market. As i said if anything, i think this game is good for the fight game itself as i am sure you know boxing today needs all the support it can get. Thank You for bearing with me on this long winded post, and best of luck in one of the hardest trades in the world. Danny An Old Timer ![]() Last edited by wildhawke11 : 05-20-2005 at 11:16 PM. |

I also think that TBCB is good for boxing in general. Any fighter who would complain about his name being used would be hurting his own best interests and deserve to be banished from the boxing simulation universe.

The main reason you need a license to use real players in other sports is because of the player's unions (NFLPA, MLBPA, NHLPA, etc.) The union, for the vast majority of the players, own the likeness rights and licenses them out to software developers. Boxers don't have a union. But I'm sure if the game got enough attention, a lot of boxers would complain and OOTP would have to do something. Buit as it is, it's too small for anyone to really care.

I think this game has been great for boxing and this post is an example of it you have people from both Europe and North America all sharing there thoughts on boxing thanks to title bout it is dumb for a fighter to want out of title bout it should be an honor to be but in this game with the greats of all time.

I believe that it primarily has to do with the fact that TBCB uses only the fighters' names, not their actual likenesses. That's why the game company itself doesn't produce a photo pack, and instead we players rely on Cube & the community to pull the photos together totally independent of OOTP.

A referee knows
A friend of mine is a referee. Without giving his name, he was a big time ref. maybe the best all time, now retired. Here's a clue he did an Ali-Frazier, Johannson- Paterson, Foreman-Norton, Hagler- I think Mugabi, I could go on, anyway I told him about the game and the fact that he was in it. He was very amused. He doesn't use a computer, he's 84, a former gold glover and Marine who still does push ups every day. He had me call one of his sons. His son logged on to the site and also got a kick out of his father & brother being referees in the game.

I think you are okay with just names, it is with image rights that the problems start.
I remember years ago, Terry Goodchild (the designer of Championship Boxing, Title Bout's only challenger in the 80's and 90's perhaps) was visting the Thomas A Beckett gym in London and happened to have a copy of his game with him. He showed the game to the then British Heavyweight champion, Hughroy Currie. Far from being annoyed about being in the game, Currie's only reaction was to be "alarmed" at his relatively poor ratings. This made Terry even more alarmed!! I reckon the only current boxer who would want money from having his name in the game would be Floyd Mayweather. |
