Memorable Upsets

What are some memorable upsets you have experienced while playing TBCB?
my top 2 are Cleavland Williams vs Ali where Williams KOs Ali in the 6th and also there is where Williams upset Marciano due to injury. My 2nd upset was another HW bout where Marvis Frazier upset Joe by KO in the first.

Not in this game or TF 2001, but the game that preceded it, I had Tito Trinidad going after the IBF Welterweight title & Simon Brown was the champ. I thought it would be a fairly easy night for Tito but Simon had other ideas! In a 9 round battle, Brown hit the deck twice & Tito 4 times - the 4th time he didn't get up by the count of 10!

In the new game, I think my biggest upset so far was Takaloo TKOing De La Hoya in 3 rounds to take the WBC Super Welterweight title from Oscar.

Yo! I simmed this same fight and Simon also beat Tito in a slug fest. Many knockdowns...

In my current fighters universe I've just had Kali Meeham win the I.B.F Heavyweight title from Chris Byrd by a 1st round K.O.

Bam Bam, that's interesting! I think in the new game, Simon's a "10" rated fighter but as I recall back in '98 when I simmed that fight, I was using the current Simon & he was a "6" if I'm not mistaken.

Either way, sounds like our fights were similar! I remember being upset when Tito was dropped & thought he had Simon when he dropped him. But then in the 9th, Tito just didn't get up!

He then went on a long KO streak & won my vacant WBO title.

Previously I've had Kevin McBride knock out both John Ruiz and Lamon Brewster, and also Garing Lane knocked out Hasim Rahman once.

This was not a giant upset, but I had Billy Soose knock out Marcel Cerdan for the middleweight crown. Also Ceferino Garcia knocked out Jake LaMotta once in my universe. I know I've previously mentioned the time that Brian London scored a 2nd round TKO over Peter Jackson in the paper and pencil days.

My biggest Titlebout upset ever was with the board game in 1979 or 1980 when everyone's favorite board game marshmallow Mel Turnbow KO'd Joe Frazier in the second round. It was unusual to have Mel even reach the 2nd round of a fight, but to actually win against someone like Frazier was unthinkable. Twenty-five years later and I still remember my amazement as I double and triple checked the cards to make sure I hadn't messed up.

In TBCB my biggest meaningful upset would probably be Lou Savarese stopping a prime Ali in the 5th round to win the heavyweight championship. At the time, Ali was undefeated and had defended the title a record 19 times.

I could see you double & triple checking those cards, were you upset with the outcome?

With Ali, fighting Lou was going to be his easy 20th defense.

I wasn't upset with Mel's win . . . just stunned. He certainly deserved to have such a big win, though, because I mercilessly put him in to get slaughtered by all the biggest punchers. Yeah, I know, I was a sadistic kid.

I remember putting him in against someone (Liston or Foreman, I think) and making up the rule that he could only be stopped by KO (no TKO, 3 knockdowns, cuts, swelling, etc.). The fight lasted something absurd like 9 rounds and he was a mess. I can't even recall how many times he bounced off the canvas, but he kept getting up.

Another time I ran a loser tournament. If you lost, you proceeded on to the next round. Mel won the tournament title, losing I believe to Willi Besmanoff.

As for Ali in my universe, the interesting thing was that he never regained the crown. He was ducked when possible and had a few inopportune losses when he would have been in line as the mandatory challenger. By the time he finally got another shot at the title he was on the verge of going post-prime. He ended up losing in another upset to a prime Monte Barrett and slipped to post-prime. At the time, the division was good enough that a post-prime or end Ali didn't seriously challenge again.

Back in the card game era, I had Stefan Tangstad take out George Foreman. He did it to me again in a TBCB universe when he derailed Quarry's career - although that was hardly as big an upset.

I remember Mel taking out Jack Johnson in the card game days, he's always been a favorite thanks to that fight. I am still hoping to get a picture of the old boy although I am still enjoying the back of his head that Cube posted a few months ago.

I haven't run a lot of bouts in my universe yet, as I'm still journalising fight cards that I held months ago. Each fighter has only had one or two bouts, but so far there has been one huge upset, when Joe Beckett took a slim 6 round unanimous decision victory over Jack Johnson in both fighter's debut bouts. Johnson was cruising in the final round when Beckett put him on the seat of his pants with a left hook 80 seconds from the end. That knockdown gave him the victory. I described this bout in much detail in my Inside the Ropes thread.

Not huge upsets, but the nature of the defeats stood out to me. Sonny Liston twice bested Jou Louis. The first fight, Louis came out in the first round and did some serious damage to Liston. The second round, Liston won and Louis suffered an injury. The third round, Louis dominated and knocked Liston down. The fourth round was won by Liston and the fifth by Louis. In the sixth, Louis once again hurt Liston and knocked him down. By now, Liston's face was swollen up and his Endurance meter was empty; it appeared he had little chance left. Then out of nowhere, Louis quit on his stool before the start of the seventh round due to the injury he had sustained earlier in the fight.

Louis eventually earned a rematch (Liston was world champ) and this time, Louis dominated the first eight rounds, never doing serious damage to Liston but outclassing him every step of the way. Then in the 9th, Liston just began to land punch after punch. Louis was never given a chance to cover-up; there was not even a textual indication that he was rocked. He just kept getting hit by Liston until Liston had done about 30 points of damage and the fight was stopped.

Also, Listen successfully defended against the 15-rated Ali in a 15 round fight where Ali won the first seven rounds and Liston proceeded to win eight in a row when Ali just seemed to shut down. It was a very odd title reign.

A long time ago, when I was playing the board game, I was running a tournament and in the first round of the lightweights, Ray Lampkin scored a first round, one punch knockout of Roberto Duran. That remains the single biggest upset in my simulation experience. I daresay that it rivals the Turnbow/Frazier upset as the biggest upset in simulation history. Turnbow at least had a punchers chance and Frazier was easier to knockdown than Duran.

Marvin Hagler has had two butt whoopins at the hand of Gerald McClellan in my universe. One of those he was knocked out.

I have had some that just piss you off and i think have a problem with the game that will be fixed in the new game. Yanqui Diaz KOed Larry Holmes in the 2nd which was so impossible i was shoked and I have also got terrible decision on in which Young Stribling drew Gene Tunney. Tunney won one judges card 117-111 and the other 2 a draw which led to a majority draw.

Back in 1981, with the board game, I matched Joe Louis against Floyd Patterson. Joe was defending his Heavyweight title for the 4th time. I turned the cards for Joe, my buddy turned the cards for Floyd.

Floyd was taking a systematic beating until the 5 round when he exploded a beauty of right cross right off of Joe's chin.

My friend, doing his Howard Cosell imitation, got in my facing yelling, "Down goes Louis, down goes Louis, down goes Louis!"

As we did a bit of role playing, I did a Louis voiceover saying, "Now I'm gonna get you."

Well, that was fine except for the fact that he never got up off the floor.

Patterson over Louis - 5th round knockout.

I too checked the cards several times to make sure there wasn't a mistake.

There wasn't.
