WWBU Monthly,
Volume 11, March 1903

February was an exciting month for the WWBU as the newly crowned champion paraded his prize around the country and another weight division prepared to start the journey to crowning a king. Alfio Righetti had won the biggest prize in the WWBU by winning the WWBU World Heavyweight title in January. The triumphant Righetti proceeded to tour the country visiting the Italian communities around the country, receiving a ticker tape parade on his visit to New York. Meanwhile the WWBU continued moving one with the Middleweight World Title elimination tournament commencing during the month. The contenders were the raging favorite Mike O’Dowd who would face the fourth ranked Rocky Mosley Jr., who delivered the only blemish on O’Dowd’s record with a Technical Draw after their fight was stopped early on with an accidental cut. O’Dowd will be keen to get revenge and should take an easy win. On the other side of the draw, second ranked George Abrams would try to repeat his close decision win over Canadian hopeful Eric Lucas to gain the right to fight for the title. Their last battle was a tactical affair that Abrams was fortunate to emerge with the majority decision.

Title Bouts

24-02-1903, MW Title Tournament

In the main event, a much awaited rematch for Mike O’Dowd (#1, 25-1-1) as he seeks revenge for the only blemish on his record against Rocky Mosley Jr. (#4, 18-3-2) as well as a place in the MW World Title bout. In their first battle, the fight ended disappointingly with a Technical Draw being declared as a bad cut was opened on O’Dowd’s forehead halting the fight in the second round. The early action showed O’Dowd’s reluctance to move in close as Mosley Jr. tried to force the action and O’Dowd maintained distance, with Mosley Jr. taking the opening stanza on his aggression. The second round saw O’Dowd deliver one of his more classic performances as he took Mosley Jr. apart over the course of the round, with Mosley Jr. lucky to survive. The third round was a barnburner as Mosley Jr. took the fight up to O’Dowd and kept him on the back foot through clever counter punching and his hard right hand. The fourth and fifth were shared before O’Dowd was penalised a point in the sixth for some nasty head work in close. It seemed to shake O’Dowd’s confidence and Mosley Jr. was able to take the next two stanza’s before O’Dowd re-emerged in the eighth. A big ninth and tenth round seemed to indicate that Mosley Jr’s early efforts had sapped him, but an even eleventh left some experts scorecards at even with one round left to travel. However with the swelling around Mosley Jr’s eyes worsening O’Dowd was able to land just about everything he threw in the final round leaving the judges with a good final impression. The judges’ scorecards reflected the close nature of the bout as the scores read 115-114 for Mosley Jr., 115-114 for O’Dowd and finally 116-114 for the winner by split decision Rocky Mosley Jr. As the result was read the crowd went crazy with realisation it had witnessed one of the biggest upsets even seen in the WWBU.

In the semi-main event the first of the Middleweight Title Tournament semi-finals took place as the slick boxing George Abrams (#2, 21-4-0) fought tough Canadian Eric Lucas (#3, 20-5-1). The first time these two fighters clashed was in July 1902 where Abrams took home a close Majority Decision verdict. Through the first two rounds it looked like the crowd was in for a tentative, strategic battle with Lucas taking the honours in the minds of the experts. Both fighters came to the party in the third and put on an entertaining display of boxing as first one then the other took control with Lucas earning the slightly better over the course of the round. The next four rounds saw flashes of action in between long stretches of boredom as the crowd got restless and Abrams had slightly the better of the lacklustre rounds. By the time the tenth round ended (to the relief of pugilism fans who were counting down the rounds till the torture would end) Abrams had tied up the scorecards on the experts cards. However it would be a very hard fight to judge with many rounds differentiated by opinion only. Abrams would edge Lucas in the eleventh leaving the Canadian with a lot to do in the final round. Lucas seemed to realise this and came after Abrams early in the round rocking him with a hard right hand. Lucas brought the crowd to it’s feet with zinging punches thrown from all angles before he finally connected with 45 seconds left in the round with a right hook that sent Abrams to the seat of his pants for the count of six. Abrams would hold on for dear life as Lucas wailed away at him before slumping in relief at the sound of the bell. All held their breath for the verdict of the judges, the experts had the bout scored 114-113 for Lucas; the officials scored the bout 114-113 (x2) and 115-112 for George Abrams as Lucas jumped up and down screaming in dismay.

WWBU Monthly,
Volume 12, April 1903

March was a month of intriguing match ups as the build towards the crowning of the Middleweight champion in April gained steam. In the highest profile bout on offer, German cutie Felix Friedemann would fight the tough Mexican Ruben Olivares. Olivares was looking to get back on track after being starched in the first round in his last fight against Jiro Watanabe. Also on offer was undefeated welterweight Sharmba Mitchell’s first test against the talented Billy Backus and in a Middleweight contest hard hitting Daniel Santos looking to regain his winning touch against the classy undefeated prospect Charley Burley.

WWBU Monthly Special Edition,

Thought I would go through some changes I have made to the way the WWBU universe is being run. As I have gone along I have tweaked, and in some cases overhauled, some of systems I use to manage the universe.

Behind the Veil

Regional Titles
In the Heavyweight division I will be adding three regional titles that will be contested. I have chosen to have these titles active in one division only for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that the Heavyweight division will have a large number of fighters active at any one time, thus ensuring that a number of nationalities will be represented and the second reason is that with a large number of active fighters that the lesser fighters will have a chance at a bit of glory.

There will be four regional belts;

• North American
• European
• British Empire/Commonwealth
• Intercontinental (everyone else basically)

The holder of one of these belts will defend the belt everytime the fighter has a bout against another eligible fighter, i.e. if a British fighter holds the British Empire belt and he fights an Australian he will be defending the belt. If a regional belt holder ever signs to fight the WWBU champion then the regional belt will be vacated and the two highest ranked eligible fighters will fight for the belt in two months time.

The Beginning Stages

Beginning fighters progress from the Beginning group to the Prospects group based on their number of wins. At the moment there is a percentage chance after each victory equal to (Wins – 5) * 10 % chance of the fighter moving into the Prospects group. Once a fighter moves to the Prospects group he will be fighting other Prospects, whereas he only fought Tomato Cans in the Beginners group. This has meant that fighters that are not A+ prospects have been getting stuck at the Prospect stage because they have generally needed 7 or 8 wins against other Prospects to earn their way to 15 wins and a WWBU world ranking.

I have decided to tweak this slightly so that fighters will on average spend less time in the Prospects group before they get ranked. I have amended the formula to (Wins – 8) *10 % chance of moving into the Prospects group after each win. This should mean that on average fighters move into the Prospects group with 12 wins rather than the 9 or 10 they have been.

A New Aging System

I have modified the aging model that I am using for the WWBU. The new model is still based on the principles of the Cubedrum aging method. In fact the Beginning and Pre-Prime stages are the same. However once a fighter gets to the Prime stage it all changes. A fighter will accumulate career points as per the Cubedrum method (see http://www.cornerwork.com/modules.ph...article&sid=63) , however instead of subtracting those points from 100 and moving to Post-Prime and End I have a new system.

Every twenty points the fighter will make an Aging Roll. The Aging Roll is a percentage chance that an aging effect will be applied. For every 20 career points accumulated the fighter will have a 10% chance of an Aging effect beihng applied, i.e. if a fighter has accumulated 62 career points he has a 30% chance of an Aging effect being applied. If an Aging Effect is to be applied I am using the table that either DJDean or Lee used for their universe (so credit goes to them) as shown below:

1-20 Slowing Down Both Control Factors -1
21-40 Reactions Affected Punches Landed -2 Defense -2
41-50 Reactions Badly Gone Punches Landed -4 Defense -4
51-55 Loss of Power Hitting Power -1
56-70 Punch Resistance Fading Knockdown, Knockout, Recovery +1
71-75 Punch Resistance Badly Gone Knockdown, Knockout, Recovery +2
76-80 Scar Tissue Accumulating Cut Resistance +2
81-85 Tiring Badly Endurance -2
86-90 Jaded Absorb Punishment +1 Endurance -1 Aggressiveness -1
91-95 Lease of Life Punches Landed +2
96-00 Wily Old Experienced Fox Both Control Factors +1 Intelligence +1

Once the aging effect has been applied the fighter will need to make a Retirement Check. The Retirement check is a percentage chance that the fighter will retire. The chance that a fighter will retire is equal to Aging Effects applied x 10. So if a fighter is having his second aging effect applied he will have a 20% chance of retiring.

WWBU Monthly May 1903

I'm going to change up how I present the WWBU Monthly, splitting each edition into smaller chunks that should be easier to read (as well as spread out the updates so they are more regular).

WWBU Monthly,
Volume 13, May 1903

An exiting month of WWBU action ensued in April with two Title fights on offer and the build up to Welterweight tournament gathering steam. The highlight of the month would be Alfio Righetti’s first defense of his WWBU Heavyweight title against young propect Denver Ed Martin. Some observers were disappointed that Righetti was not taking on one of the higher ranked fighters, however he is allowed some leeway in his first defense. The Middleweight WWBU title tournament final is also on in April, however it lacked the star power to garner much more than cursory attention with Mike O’Dowd, for a long time the division standard bearer, losing to Rocky Mosley Jr. in the semi finals. George Abrams was the overwhelming favorite, however Mosley Jr. had fought the best fight of his career two months ago and if he continues with that form he will be hard to top.

Coming Soon the WWBU MW title fight coverage...

WWBU Monthly May 1903

09-04-1903 WWBU MW Title, Abrams v Mosley Jr.

It was an unexpected pairing that faced off for the right to be the first Middleweight Champion, George Abrams (#1, 21-4-1) carried the weight of expectation on his shoulders as the favourite however his opponent Rocky Mosley Jr. (#2, 18-3-3) had just fought the fight of his life two months ago and if he could bring that form on this night he would prevail. The public had not been enamoured with the fight as all expected it to be a technical affair that would go the distance. Both fighters looked in top condition and they exhibited their prowess through the early part of the fight with honours even after 6 rounds. After a seventh won by Mosley Jr., Abrams would look to put some distance between the combatants with a big round eight, punctuated by a succession of powerful blows in the last minute of action. Mosley Jr., however, retained his composure and after a back and forth ninth round and a well won tenth, Abrams would look the worse for wear with significant swelling forming after a clash of heads. The eleventh would see Mosley Jr. try to work on the eye, with another well disguised head butt followed by a flurry of jabs and right hands. Abrams seemed to find a font of energy somewhere and fought back well to have Mosley Jr. on the back foot and well within his shell by the end of the round.

Both fighters knew entering the championship rounds that the fight was up for grabs and the 12th round could signal what is to come. Abrams was up for some rough housing to try and gain an advantage when in close he found time to strike Mosley Jr. above the right eye with a stray elbow opening a savage cut. Fearing the worst Mosley Jr. was ordered to an examination by the doctor. Luckily for him the doctor, after consideration, was happy for the bout to continue and he wasted no time in coming after Abrams knowing how lucky he was to be still fighting. Neither corner could repair their man’s face in the break after the twelfth and both sought an advantage by working on the other man’s injury, however despite a lively start by Mosley Jr., Abrams would take the round with a dominant last minute. The fourteenth round was an ugly round of posturing and wrestling. With the start of the fifteenth the crowd rose to acknowledge the two warriors, and Abrams instantly looked to make a lasting impression with an aggressive beginning to the round. Mosley Jr. was not to be cowed however and he fought back before a hard right hand from Abrams made him more conservative till the bell rung. The ringside experts had the card in a very close fight 144-142 for Mosley Jr. The official judges scored the bout 144-141 for Mosley Jr., 143-143 a draw and 144-142 for Abrams so the fight was declared a draw and the rematch will be held in two months time.

WWBU Monthly May 1903

10-04-1903 WWBU HW Title, Righetti (Champ) v Martin

The reigning Heavyweight champion, the lauded and undefeated Alfio Righetti (C, 23-0-1) would defend his title for the first time against the relatively unknown Denver Ed Martin (#8, 15-2-0). Martin had earned his record fighting against career club fighters and young prospects and while he was considered a good fighter to watch for the future, he seemed to be swimming way out of his depth at this stage of his career. The early moments saw Martin try to take the fight to Righetti, but the Italian would quickly move away from the young man’s reputed power. Righetti has some sting himself, as he showed in the waning seconds as a counter right landed Martin on the seat of his pants to have the crowd rising out of it’s seats, however he quickly picked himself up and continued. The next two rounds would see Righetti use the same tactic successfully as he outboxed Martin and lead him on a merry dance, except for a single devastating punch in the third which taught Righetti to respect Martin’s power. Righetti stepped it up in the fourth and had Martin in trouble on the ropes as the round concluded. The punishment continued in the next three rounds, with a knock down in the sixth round seeming to take the fight out of Martin.

With severe swelling around his left eye and a slow eighth round, Martin almost stole the show with a hard left uppercut near the start of the ninth which had Righetti in trouble and holding onto the ropes. He would survive the round however and further punish his opponent in the tenth and then in the eleventh he really opened up finally finishing him off with a left hook with 25 seconds remaining in the round.

WWBU Monthly Special Edition,

Title Fights and Mandatory Challengers
As per normal when I go on holidays I dream up new ways in which the WWBU universe can be run differently (I know I’m weird… ). In this case I was rethinking my method of scheduling title fights for the WWBU champion of each weight division as I wasn’t completely happy with my original setup. The new method is outlined below.

The WWBU Champion’s bouts are scheduled as per normal scheduling rules (slightly modified Cube method) for any other fighter, the only difference being that any prospective title challenger must have won their last fight. Each June a Mandatory Eliminator is scheduled to determine the mandatory challenger to the WWBU title holder in weight divisions that meet either of the following qualifications:
- the champ has held the belt for three months and had a successful title defense OR
- the champ has held the belt for six months.

If either of these two conditions are satisfied then a Mandatory Eliminator is scheduled between the two highest rated fighters who are 1 – available to fight in June and 2 – won their last bout. The Mandatory Eliminator is a 12 round bout, the winner will then be the champ’s mandatory for the next six months. During this period the Mandatory Challenger will not fight a bout except against the WWBU champ.

Over the remaining six months of the year the champ is scheduled to fight opponents as per normal except that there is a percentage chance each time the champ fights that he will fight the Mandatory Challenger. The percentage is calculated as shown below:
% = (((Month – 3) + Draw Power of Mandatory) – Draw Power of Scheduled Opponent) * 10
For example if the champion is scheduled to fight to in September against a fighter with draw power of 3 but has a mandatory with draw power of 2 then the percentage chance of the champ fighting the mandatory is:
(((9-3)+2)-3) * 10 = 50% chance of fighting mandatory

If the mandatory has not been fought prior to the end of the year then the champ is stripped and the next scheduled fight for the mandatory is for the WWBU Title. If the champ loses the title prior to fighting the mandatory then the mandatory loses his status and the new champ will not have a mandatory till next June.

I feel that these rules reflect some of the politics involved in mandatory challengers and title shots while remaining simple to administer.

WWBU Monthly June 1903 - Introduction

WWBU Monthly,
Volume 14, June 1903

With the mid year Mandatory eliminators coming up for the Heavyweight division, Alfio Righetti would try to make hay while sun shines by defending his belt just six weeks after his successful defense over Denver Ed Martin (KO11, April 1903). This time his opponent would be German Walter Neusel, number 8 in last months WWBU rankings. Also this month, the dream for Welterweight contenders gets closer as the WW Title Tournament gets underway. The choice match up is the Felix Trinidad/Sharmba Mitchell fight with many pundits expecting a lively and entertaining fight. The other semi-final is no slouch either with Packy McFarland the heavy favorite against Reuben Shank.

WWBU Monthly June 1903 - Marquee Bouts

04-05-1903 WWBU WW Title Tournament Semi-Finals

A lot of intrigue had built for the main event on WW Tournament semi-final night as Felix Trinidad (#1, 22-2-0) prepared to face perhaps his biggest test in the unproven Sharmba Mitchell (#4, 17-0-0). Mitchell had less experience, but in their only fight against the same foe, Mitchell was able to take a strong unanimous decision over Packy McFarland over 10 rounds while Trinidad barely eked out a Majority Decision win. The bout opened slowly as both fighters went though a feeling out process in the first stanza but Mitchell found that he had the speed advantage and played it to the fullest in the second with a blistering array of punches. The boxing lesson continued through the middle stages of the bout and with the exception of a powerful flurry in the fourth round with nary a whimper from Trinidad. Finally in the eighth Trinidad made a dent on the contest with a fierce display of punching that had Mitchell in trouble along the ropes. The ninth was a classic with the two fighters trading serious leather as first one then the other held the advantage. This was Trinidad’s game however and he was revitalised by the slugging and only some sterling counter punching work from Mitchell held him off in the tenth. After a tough eleventh that many observers considered an even round, Mitchell out boxed and out thought Trinidad in the twelfth to take the unanimous decision on the judges cards 117-112, 118-111 and 116-112.

In the semi main event the other semi final played out between Packy McFarland (#2, 18-3-0) and Reuben Shank (#3, 16-4-1). McFarland was the overwhelming favourite in the press gallery and with the book makers, however there had been whispers recently that McFarland had been too over the top in his preparations. McFarland showed the benefit of the extra training early, quickly establishing his range and dictating the flow of the fight with all the opening three rounds being widely in his favour. The fourth continued in that vein but punctuated by Shank being landed on his back with a wicked combination on the button. The fifth found Shank in trouble again after a McFarland right hand that had him groping for the ropes. With significant swelling a mounting problem, Shank rallied to take the sixth before receiving a sustained beating from McFarland that reached crescendo in the tenth with two knockdowns prompting the referee to mercifully call the bout. McFarland was through to the tourney final with a dominant 10th round TKO victory.

WWBU Monthly June 1903 - Marquee Bouts

21-05-1903 WWBU HW Title, Righetti (Champ) v Neusel

Six weeks after his first successful defence, WWBU champion Alfio Righetti (24-0-1) once more stepped into the ring, this time in an all European affair against German Walter Neusel (#8, 15-4-1). Experts believe that Neusel is a dangerous opponent for Righetti to pick as a fill in fight prior to facing his mandatory later in the year, with reasonable power and a well schooled European style, however they all believe that Righetti is rightfully the favourite. The bout starts well with Righetti establishing his offence at a comfortable range while Neusel tries to force the action, landing some telling blows while absorbing a reasonable amount of leather. That would be the pattern of the second and third rounds, with Righetti getting the better of the action. Righetti seems to be in charge in the fourth till late in the round Neusel lands a big right hand that has the champ in survival mode till the bell.

Righetti recovered between rounds and dominated the action in the next five rounds with a particularly brutal ninth where Righetti had Neusel in trouble on the ropes after a series of hard right and left hooks and crosses. With a swollen right eye giving him trouble, Neusel bravely took the eleventh but Righetti took back control the next round and the German looked spent. Righetti cruised through the last three rounds to take the fight 145-140, 144-141 and 143-142 via a unanimous decision.
