WWBU Monthly October 1903
WWBU Monthly,
Volume 19, October 1903 After his taunts of the last month, Harrison and Righetti finally agreed on a date and purse for the challenge from the Mandatory challenger for the world crown. Audley Harrison has been vocal in recent times about Righetti avoiding him, but Righetti’s camp had been intimating that the delay was caused by Harrison’s money demands. The fight will take place on the 13th of the month and the two fighters have entered training camp. Unusually Righetti has taken to a closed camp after being open and very public in previous defenses. George Abrams will fight this month, but because he was not pleased with his choice of challenger he will not be defending his title. The word around the traps is that none of the top Middleweights want to risk their reputation with a loss in boring affair. Abrams though is the world champion in his division so their reluctance seems hard to understand and should change soon. Welterweight champion Packy McFarland is in camp at the moment readying himself for his second defense of his crown. This time he will be facing little regarded contender Vince Martinez. |

Good universe Mark, you have several fighters that I currently have active so it's fun to compare (Mofokeng, Graziano and others).
Have you ever found a photo of Righetti? I have searched high and low to no avail since he debuted in my fake little world. |

WWBU Monthly October 1903 - Marquee Fights
06-10-1903 MW Non-Title Fight, Abrams (c) v Pasko
None of the Middleweight contenders were prepared to pony up for a fight with the champ this month, so Abrams (champ, 24-4-1) decided he would fight regardless putting on an exhibition for the fans against the lowly Greg Pasko. Pasko proved to be nothing other than a punching bag as Abrams did nothing but land blows on the poor sap throughout the “contest” till the referee stopped the bout in the sixth round. WWBU Monthly October 1903 - Marquee Fights
13-10-1903 WWBU HW Title, Righetti (c) v Harrison
Alfio Righetti (champ, 25-0-1) and Audley Harrison (#2, 25-6-0), Mandatory Challenger finally got together to make the fight that Harrison had earned in the ring in June. Harrison became the mandatory challenger by defeating Rex Layne in June in impressive fashion. Harrison is much bigger than the tall but angular Righetti, but some pundits question Harrison’s ability to stay the distance in a fifteen round contest. This is mitigated by Righetti’s questionable chin early in contests and Harrison’s undeniable power. Based on work rate and endurance Righetti goes in as the favourite, but is a far from certain affair. Surprisingly enough on the day of the fight it was clear that the champ had not been spending his time in the gym during the break in fights, while Harrison looked trim and fighting fit. The first round saw Righetti take the fight to Harrison successfully as the big Britton struggled for timing and time; however by the second Harrison was in control and landing some hard right hands to establish his control of the stanza. The third round was quite slow with Righetti successfully tying up Harrison on the inside while winning the battle of the long range jabs on the outside. With the bell to start the fourth round both fighters seemed re-energized as both seemed ready to throw serious leather. Righetti was like a prowling hunter however the first two times he tried to open up Harrison caught him with hard right hands that backed him off. After the second right Harrison wanted to follow up with some attack of his own however an ill timed left hand left him open and Righetti landed a flush overhand right that sent Harrison stumbling back into the ropes and looking in some trouble. The crowd roaring in his ears Righetti approached foxily and landed a hard left to the body and then doubled up with a nice left hook to the head. Harrison was in serious trouble at this point and only ropes bouncing him back into the ring saw him stay in the fight. A half hearted left jab from Harrison was easily avoided and then countered with crashing right – left combo that floored him. Harrison rolled onto his stomach at the count of seven, but never appeared to be likely to regain his feet. Righetti retains his title with a stunning fourth round KO over Harrison. Hard to imagine a title holder being such a boring draw that none of the contenders want to fight him! That's a new strategy on me - if you can't intimidate them with power, do it with boredom.

WWBU Monthly November 1903
WWBU Monthly,
Volume 20, November 1903 Welterweight WWBU champion Packy McFarland will take on the tough Victor Martinez in a title defense this month. Martinez has shown some boxing ability so far in his career, however he has never defeated another member of the top ten. That fact coupled with his lack of power (4 stoppages in 17 wins), leads experts to predict McFarland to retain comfortably. On the under card of that match however the still agitating Sharmba Mitchell is looking to push for a rematch with McFarland with a bout against the eighth ranked Jimmy Leto. Mitchell has been vocal in his desire to get the reigning champ back in the ring and has stated that should he get the chance he would dance rings around McFarland. Leto is no push over, but does not seem to have the class or skill to truly test Mitchell. The WWBU Lightweight Title Tournament final has been delayed to December to allow Hlatshwayo to recover from his grueling match with Larry Boardman. Hlatshwayo suffered a knock down and 2 nasty cuts above both eyes before knocking out Boardman in the seventh round of the bruising encounter. McAuliffe is said to have been disappointed in the decision to delay the bout but is said to be as prepared for this bout as he has been for any other bout in his career. |

WWBU Monthly November 1903 - Marquee Bouts
22-11-1903 WWBU WW World Title, Packy McFarland (champ) v Vince Martinez
Packy McFarland (Champ, 21-3-0) makes his second Welterweight title defence against Vince Martinez (#5, 17-3-0). Most judges are wary of Martinez’s rankings as he has yet to defeat any fighters of note and carries two losses to Sid Barbarian on his record. Martinez is a boxer-puncher with no real power in either fist, as attested by his knockout rate of 4 stoppages in 17 victories. McFarland in contrast is in career best form and is expected by all experts to retain his crown comfortably. The crowd was restless after the first two rounds of non action provided by these two fighters, with Martinez proving his shell is very hard to crack. The third saw McFarland find the chink in Martinez’s armour as he landed blows from all angles though Martinez was never in any real trouble. The fourth and fifth were once again more subdued with McFarland edging the advantage in each round. They would be the last competitive rounds. The sixth saw McFarland confuse Martinez with slick ring movement and clever feints, allowing him to land a staggering number of blows. The trend would continue in the seventh with the bout stunningly ended at the start of the eighth. After a minute of inaction, McFarland landed a thudding left hook had Martinez on floor and receiving the full count. McFarland retains his title impressively with the eighth round KO. Undercard WW Sharmba Mitchell #2 18-1-0 MD12 Jimmy Leto #8 16-5-1 (Mitchell did just enough to shade the tough Leto) LW Chamaco Ortiz 13-0-0 KO9 Joey Limas 12-7-2 (Limas down four times) LHW Tony Anthony 11-0-0 TKO3 Bob Garner 14-7-1 (Garner winning when Anthony knocks him down three times in round 3) LW Carlos Rios 14-2-2 KO7 Ivor Germain 14-4-2 (Germain down three times) LHW Alain Simon 14-5-2 SD10 Troy Weaver 14-3-1 (Weaver down in eighth round) |

WWBU Monthly December 1903 - Overview
WWBU Monthly,
Volume 21, December 1903 The following Title Bouts are happening in December: Righetti (c) v Page for the WWBU Heavyweight World title, this is the moment of truth for Page who is much praised for his skill but failed in his most important bout. Abrams (c) v O’Dowd for WWBU Middleweight World Title, Abrams and O’Dowd have fought 4 previous times and though they have been close fights O’Dowd has won them all. The final of the WWBU Lightweight World Title Tournament will be held to crown the winner of Jack McAuliffe and Isaac Hlatshwayo, Hlatshwayo is the rank outsider but he has a history of upsets and could pull off another one if McAuliffe is not focused. Jaime Garza is the favorite to win the Featherweight WWBU World title tournament that kicks off this month with the Semi-Final stage. Jaime Garza will fight Baby Arizmendi for the right to move onto the tournament final while Vuyani Bungu and Ricardo Cardona fight for the other place. |
