IBL RELEASES OPENING SCHEDULE FOR
FUTURE CONTENDER SERIES Thursday 25 July 2002 As promised during Monday night's International Boxing League "opening night", the schedule for the opening series of bouts in the league's "Future Contender" series was released today. The series was devised by IBL Chief Director James Molk as a "preparation ground" for those fighters who impressed during the league's selection trials but were considered perhaps a bit raw or underdeveloped to take part in the regional qualifiers. "I'm excited about what the Future Contender series will reveal," Molk said today. "The large majority of these fighters are still in their mid-to-late teens and they'll have a great opportunity during the coming eighteen months or so to develop their talents in the boxing ring without having to worry so much about the pressure of competing for a title. I'm looking forward to it." All Future Contender series fight cards will be held from Thursday through to Sunday, using the same divisional sequencing as the regional qualifiers (Middle, Light-Heavy, Welter, Light and Feather). But unlike the regional cards the FC events will not be limited to a particular geographical location. To avoid any broadcasting overlaps, the cards held on Thursday through Saturday will be staged in different timezones to the regional events. So if there's a regional event being held in NYC, you can guarantee that the corresponding Future Contender series card will take place somewhere in Europe or Asia. "These young men will get to see parts of the world they could not have dreamed of otherwise," said Molk. "It will no doubt be quite an adventure for them." Having revealed on Tuesday that the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh will host the IBL's debut card, Molk confirmed today that the entire list of series one venues would be announced this coming Saturday. Following is the complete schedule of series one bouts for the Future Contender series: MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION GROUP ONE - THURSDAY 29/08/02 CARMELO BOSSI vs JAE-DO YUH TIBERIO MITRI vs MICHAEL CRONJE HUGO CORRO vs TONY SIBSON JOSE GONZALEZ vs SOLLY KRIEGER ARTIE LEVINE vs HASTINGS GAYLE JULIO ALVARES vs LAURENT DAUTHUILLE GROUP TWO - FRIDAY 30/08/02 TEBIRO DIAW vs JUAN RIVERO HIROMI KAMAMOTO vs LOMANA WAMBA STEVE BELLOISE vs MARIANO RONALDO DAVID GIBBS vs DIEGO KEMPES CHARLEY JOSEPH vs DON FULLMER COLEY WELCH vs GUILLERMO CARRILES GROUP THREE - SATURDAY 31/08/02 DAVE SHADE vs RENE JACQUOT DWIGHT DAVISON vs FRANZ SZUZINA DAVEY MOORE vs VINCENT PETTWAY CLAUDIO FERNANDEZ vs ANTHONY JONES TONY JANIRO vs JESUS ENAMORADO ROBERT VILLEMAIN vs JIMMY BEAU GROUP FOUR - SUNDAY 01/09/02 JOSE BASORA vs AHMET DOTTUEV ROCKY CASTELLANI vs ROBBIE SIMS WILLIE MONROE vs FRANK MOODY RALPH DUPAS vs WALTER GOMEZ FREDDIE HENNEBERRY vs JOE DENUCCI ERNIE VIGH vs VITO ANTUOFERMO LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION GROUP ONE - THURSDAY 05/09/02 TOMMY YAROSZ vs JAMES PAUL WARWICK JOHN CONTEH vs CHRISTIAN ROFF GUSTAVE ROTH vs CEZARY BISNIEK GUS LESNEVICH vs SIXTO RODRIGUEZ IN-CHUL BAEK vs YVON DURELLE VICTOR CORDOBA vs GIRALDO ROSSETTI GROUP TWO - FRIDAY 06/09/02 JACK DELANEY vs FRED WALMAN MELIO BETTINA vs LORENZO PASCUAL CHONG-PAL PARK vs ALLEN THOMAS HENRY HANK vs TONY MUNDINE TONY ANTHONY vs ALEX BUXTON JIMMY WEBB vs GEORGE NICHOLS GROUP THREE - SATURDAY 07/09/02 HARRY MATTHEWS vs GREG TANNER TONY SHUCCO vs BOB THORNINGTON HOLLY MIMS vs BRAD GARRISON ANTON CHRISTOFORIDIS vs JUKKA KOIVISTO BILLY SMITH vs SAM BAROUDI LEO LOMSKI vs RICHIE KATES GROUP FOUR - SUNDAY 08/09/02 JOEY MAXIM vs JULIO GABALDON WILLIE PASTRANO vs ALBERT FINCH BOBBY CZYZ vs WILLI HOEPNER CHARLES WILLIAMS vs MIKE ROSSMAN BATTLING SIKI vs CLARENCE HINNANT HERSCHEL JACOBS vs NATE SIMPSON WELTERWEIGHT DIVISION GROUP ONE - THURSDAY 12/09/02 TOMMY BELL vs CHARLEY SCOTT JORGE MORENO vs WILLY QUATOUR BENNY PARET vs ALEXIS VALDERRAMA RAFAEL GARCIA vs FRANCOIS PAVILLA BILLY LYNCH vs JASON MORRIS ERNIE RODERICK vs RAMON LACRUZ GROUP TWO - FRIDAY 13/09/02 TED LEWIS vs REINHARDT KOHLER ROGER MENETREY vs LIAM MAGHEE GERARDO MORALES vs JAMES PAGE FREDERICO DE SOUZA vs SANG-HYUN KIM STANLEY HAYWARD vs JONTY COETZER LUTHER RAWLINGS vs MICHAEL WATSON GROUP THREE - SATURDAY 14/09/02 LEROY JACKSON vs AHMED SANTOS PEDRO CABRERA vs CARLOS HERNANDEZ BERNARD DOCUSEN vs SANDRO LOPOPOLO IFEANI ADAMU vs JOHNNY JADICK JIMMY CLABBY vs CARLOS ALOU DAVID FLEMMING vs PATRIZIO OLIVA GROUP FOUR - SUNDAY 15/09/02 BOON-NAM PANOMYAONG vs DANILO VILORIA VIRGIL AKINS vs HECTOR THOMPSON ALEXIS ORTIZ vs NINO LAROCCA BILLY ALGER vs EVERALDO AZEVEDO VINCE MARTINEZ vs MIGUEL VELASQUEZ GREGORY MULLINS vs JUSTIN ROWSELL LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION GROUP ONE - THURSDAY 19/09/02 JACK BLACKBURN vs HUGO BARRAZA SAMMY FULLER vs ALFREDO MARCANO JOSE LUIS RAMIREZ vs JACKIE BEARD EMORY CABANA vs MARIO MARTINEZ SAMMY ANGOTT vs GEORGE DUNN ENRIQUE BOLANOS vs BOB ALLOTEY GROUP TWO - FRIDAY 20/09/02 IKE WILLIAMS vs ISHIMATSU SUZUKI FREDDIE DAWSON vs TOMMY COLLINS BILLY PETROLLE vs ANATOLY ALEXANDROV LIVINGSTONE BRAMBLE vs RICHARD HOWARD STEVE SULLIVAN vs GEORGE CHANEY FRANKIE BALTAZAR vs RAY MANCINI GROUP THREE - SATURDAY 21/09/02 ESTEBAN DEJESUS vs LARRY STANTON BEAU JACK vs GIL CADILLI PEDRO MONTANEZ vs SHINICHI YAMABE OSCAR NELSON vs GREG HAUGEN RAY MILLER vs KENNY BOGNER RICARDO ARREDONDO vs ROBERTO GARCIA GROUP FOUR - SUNDAY 22/09/02 LEW TENDLER vs JUSTIN JUUKO LOU AMBERS vs IDELFONSO BETHELMY LUDWIG LIGHTBURN vs BERNABE VASQUEZ WILLIE RITCHIE vs RODOLFO GONZALEZ MAXIE DOCUSEN vs LARRY BOARDMAN GEORGE ARAUJO vs AL FORD FEATHERWEIGHT DIVISION GROUP ONE - THURSDAY 26/09/02 JOSEPH SADDLER vs JOE TETTEH ALBERTO MARTINEZ vs CARLOS MENDOZA HOWARD WINSTONE vs ALAN SIGURDSEN CARMELO NEGRON vs RICARDO MORALES JACK WOLFE vs LUIZ FEOLA RAY FAMECHON vs STEPHEN MORRIS GROUP TWO - FRIDAY 27/09/02 ALBERTO ARIZMENDI vs FERNANDO ZAMACOLA PAUL JORGENSEN vs BRUNO ALVES FERNANDO TAVAREZ vs ROLLY SANTIAGO DELRON KHUMALO vs MASASHI KANEDA JESAN VALENZUELA vs EVERETT RIGHTMIRE STEVIE CRUZ vs GRACIEUX LAMPERTI GROUP THREE - SATURDAY 28/09/02 BENNY BASS vs GEORGE SMITH AUBURN COPELAND vs ANUCHA THONGLAO GENE SMITH vs RYAN PARKER PATRICK FORD vs DWIGHT HAWKINS JUAN SANCHEZ vs CLAUDIO REDONDO RUBEN CASTILLO vs JORGE JIMENEZ GROUP FOUR - SUNDAY 29/09/02 CHRISTOPHER BATTALINO vs FRANCOIS SALVATERRE JOHNNY DUNDEE vs TERRY SPINKS CHRIS MULLIGAN vs MASAMI NAGAI RONNIE CLAYTON vs MARK FORREST JIMMY PERRIN vs HELMUT MULLER JET BALLY vs KIYOSHI HATANAKA

Apologies for the inactivity in the HBF/IBL the last few days. Been pretty busy at work and home. I'll be making a post when I get home from work tonight regarding the venues for the IBL's first series of bouts.

IBL WILL VISIT 21 NATIONS
DURING OPENING SERIES Sunday 28 July 2002 Yesterday, the International Boxing League released the list of venues for the first series of bouts in their World Championship regional qualifying tournaments. With a grand total of 21 nations involved, the global sweep of the league's first five weeks of competition is staggering. It's a deliberate, calculated attempt to introduce the league to the world with a bang, one that IBL Chief Director James Molk is confident will be successful. "It's going to be an absolutely fantastic first five weeks," said Molk today from his Las Vegas headquarters. "Looking at the list it amazes even me. The extent of it is just mind blowing and it doesn't even take into account our Future Contender series. I think that boxing fans the world over are really going to warm to the IBL pretty quickly." The first series of bouts will kick off during the final week of stage one in the Heavyweight Boxing Federation's World Championship and 1st Defense tournaments and so from the second week onwards the IBL will enjoy almost exclusive exposure, something that Molk is exceedingly happy about. "It's all been timed out almost perfectly," he said. "With the exception of their Qualifying League bouts the HBF will be on hiatus for a few weeks after stage one concludes so that will give all boxing fans a chance to focus on our competitors. They've been following the fortunes of guys like Gene Tunney and Elmer Ray but there'll be a window there for us and we plan to make the most of it." NEW YORK STATE OF MIND
Tuesday 30 July 2002 Story by James Reynolds for the New York Age On Friday the 20th of September, Bronx-born Lightweight fighter Richie Plunkett will make his International Boxing League debut against Portland's Ray Lampkin at the Mountaineer Race Track & Resort in Chester, West Virginia. In recent days a number of experts have singled out Plunkett as one of the fighters to keep an eye on in the opening series of IBL bouts and after watching him train yesterday, I can see why. Of both Italian and Irish heritage, this 27 year-old slugger is an absolute whirlwind of aggression and activity when he steps in a boxing ring. Observing him during a series of frantic three minute sparring sessions, I was impressed by his workrate, power and stamina. IBL scouts painted Lampkin as a skilled boxer, though not overly aggressive. Against Plunkett he'll have his hands full as, going on what I saw, the New Yorker will have little trouble outworking him. "It was pretty strange actually," Plunkett said, when I asked about the time after the Atlantic City selection trials. "I knew that I'd worked my butt off and that they were impressed with me but the feeling I had afterwards was kind of hollow. I'm not the kind of guy who craves attention but it was weird how some of the other guys at that trial garnered a lot of publicity and I didn't. I remembered them all and I couldn't help thinking "Wait a minute? I was just as good as they were, if not better". It made me a little worried and for a while I thought I might miss out on the regional tournament. But everything's turned out nicely and I'm looking forward to my debut." More than any other city in the world, New York has the greatest representation of fighters in the HBF and IBL and that level of saturation is what has been sighted as the reasoning behind the apparent slighting of Plunkett after the trials. As he said, he's over it now and is looking forward with great enthusiasm. A fanatical, lifelong Yankees fan, Plunkett told me that he was looking forward to tonight's interleague matchup between his Bronx Bombers and my Dodgers. "I think interleague was a great idea for MLB," he said. "Never made sense to me why the teams from the two leagues stayed separate and never played each other save for the Series. Sure, it was unique, I guess, but have you ever been to a Yankees-Dodgers game, Mr. Reynolds? Or Yankees-Mets? Of course, you have. There's an excitement in the air like nothing else. New Yorkers just love seeing our teams go up against each other and I can't wait for tomorrow night. It's also going to be great to see the Atlantic semis with the HBF. That Louisiana guy Harry Wills, I'm excited about watching him fight in the flesh. It's going to be a great night." With the amount of NYC fighters, I asked Richie if he thought the city would ever have an entourage like Elmer Ray's Florida Alliance or USC out in California. Plunkett shook his head no. "It's every man for himself here," he replied. "We might all be representing Gotham but there's no way we're going to do anything to give each other an advantage. I think it's a pride thing where we stand alone but with the number of guys from here, the odds must be pretty good for one of us to win a world title. You've got Tunney and Bowe at the top of the HBF and I'd be surprised if either of them don't end up in the World Championship tournament final. Then there's a bunch of us in the IBL who look like having a real shot. NYC's going to contend, don't worry about that." Richie Plunkett impressed me as a very level-headed individual, one who'll give his opponent fits every time he steps into the ring. I, for one, am anticipating his professional debut with a lot of enthusiasm and I'd advise every one of you reading this column to do the same...

MORRISON ACCUSED OF ASSAULT
FOLLOWING EARLY MORNING MELEE Wednesday 31 July 2002 Newsagencies in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin are reporting this morning that 19 year-old International Boxing League Middleweight competitor Jake Morrison has been accused of assault following an incident early Monday morning. The accuser was not named but he's alleged that he was out running at approximately 5.30am on Monday when he came across a man fitting Morrison's description. They exchanged words and eventually punches, with the accuser apparently suffering a broken nose and a fractured left cheekbone as a result. Morrison found a deal of notoriety when he attended the IBL's Indiana selection trials in mid-June and is apparently one of the fiercest punchers that the IBL scouts at the trial have seen. One said that Morrison had been "mean and hostile to most of the people here, even us scouts" while the league's Chief Director James Molk described him as "sinister" and "scary". "He really is ill-tempered, aggressive and nasty," Molk had said during the trials. "And I think the public will love him." Chippewa Falls police will be investigating the accusations made against Morrison and it could be a number of days before they sort out the actual facts of the situation...

It would appear so, but the truth will be revealed in the coming days...

In the universe world of the HBF/IBL, the Dodgers never left Brooklyn. If you've read most of the story you might remember Vincennes and Bowe (both Brooklyn natives) throwing the opening pitches at Ebbets for the home opener back in April. For a while, the HBF/IBL was tied in with a baseball dynasty I was writing which I've since stopped doing. I have plans for another one though and it will be set in the same uni as the HBF/IBL is. |

A LONG SHOT? I THINK NOT
Friday 2 August 2002 Story by David Gomez for espn.com "I was up on my feet from the moment they announced Light-Heavy was going in week two. Palms started sweating and then they drew "USA West" for the Wednesday and I didn't breathe for about ten seconds. Just stared at the screen and when I saw "BOB FOSTER vs SCOT LONG" flash up there I just kept on staring. Couple of minutes later I sat down and closed my eyes, just letting the realisation that I was going up against the best Light-Heavyweight in America in my debut sink in. Still hasn't quite sunk in yet." That's how Scot Long described to me the moment, now eleven days ago, when he witnessed that he'd been drawn to face Olympic Light-Heavyweight silver medallist Bob Foster in his debut International Boxing League bout on September 4. As Long said, the gravity of it still hasn't sunk in but what has changed is his attitude towards the bout, which will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. "At first I could only look at the negatives," he said. "I just thought "How the hell am I going to beat him?" The guy is a fantastic fighter and I guess I was a bit overwhelmed by that. But I've turned it around in my mind and now I'm just relishing the opportunity. I'm looking at it from the point of view where I have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Like all the other Olympic medallists, he's the one who is expected to win so he's the one who has that weight of expectation on his shoulders. If I lose, it won't be a big deal because no one thinks I can win anyway. But if I win..." In this reporter's opinion, it would be foolish for Foster and all those who are predicting him to be victorious to underestimate Scot Long. This 23 year-old Missouri native displayed an eye-opening toughness and determination two months ago at the IBL's St. Louis selection trials. He absorbed some mighty blows from Nebraska's Jack Fox and stayed on his feet during a frenzied three rounder, much to the anger of the man who was unanimously picked as the standout at the event. Long is a superbly fit individual, a southpaw who can pack a punch just aswell as taking one. All these factors must point to him having, at the very least, a puncher's chance of victory. (to be continued)

Well, I'm clearly hoping that if Karma decides to punish me it gets me before my fighter's debut. Of course, if Karma happens to live in Australia I might be screwed.
