I just made a slight edit to post #19, making it so that the Olympic selection trials took place in June 2000 instead of 1999. Obviously, it doesn't make much sense to have a selection trial the year before the event (unless the event was held early in the year) and considering that the Sydney Olympics took place in September, a 1999 selection trial would have been held at least nine months before the games.
I haven't had any time at home to devote to the HBF/IBL during the past couple of days. I'm still choosing the fighters for the IBL. I've picked the Light-Heavys and have started on the Middleweights, so I might have it all sorted out by the end of the week. I've got some ideas for some non-fight card posts that I can make while I'm here at work in both the HBF and IBL threads. If I can, I'll run the Atlantic Coast Boxing League fight card and post a review of it, aswell. |

MOLK QUESTIONS SECURITY
AFTER CONFIRMATION OF SANCHEZ-SALDIVAR BRAWL Tuesday 16 April 2002 The alleged Saturday night brawl involving Mexican Olympic gold medallists Salvador Sanchez and Vicente Saldivar was today confirmed as having taken place. It was none other than one of the combatants himself, Salvador Sanchez who revealed the truth of the incident, proudly displaying a wound from the brawl, a nasty cut over his left eye. "He looks much worse, believe me," Sanchez said in Spanish during an afternoon Mexican sports program. "But this is just a prelude. When we meet in the ring, I won't just punish him. I'll make him quit on his stool. I'll take his manhood." Sanchez, considered by many to be an early favourite to be crowned the International Boxing League's inaugural World Featherweight Champion is quite an unusual fellow. Standing just 5'7", he sports a shock of black, curly hair worn as an afro and a fashion style straight out of the '70s: he's often seen in flared jeans, afghan coats and angel flight suits. But it's been some time since anyone criticised him over it, as the last person who did apparently ended up with a broken nose. IBL Chief Director James Molk was quick to switch the focus from the boxing aspect of the story to one of security. "I'd like to know where the security guards were in that club," he said. "I've heard it's a reputable establishment, yet when this brawl started, there was no one there to break it up. That's the most alarming aspect of the whole situation. Everyone knows that if it had just been a brawl between a bunch of kids, no one would care. But because it's a couple of famous boxers, it's front page news around the world. The fact that it's boxers fighting in public ... that scares people, I guess. It is unfortunate that the incident happened at all, but anyone who's followed amateur boxing knows the history between these two young men. And the owners of the club must have known, too, so why weren't they more cautious in handling their clients?" Molk went on to say that Sanchez and Saldivar would not be reprimanded for their behaviour, but stated that he would be speaking to both of them in the near future. GREB DECIDES TO TURN PRO There's news out of Pittsburgh today that will thrill both the IBL and boxing fans alike. 19 year-old amateur Middleweight boxer Harry Greb has announced his intention to turn professional and attend the IBL's regional selection trials. Greb had said as recently as Sunday that he planned to stay in the amateur ranks until the 2004 Athens Olympics, but has obviously had a change of heart. He was expected to represent the United States in Sydney, but was sensationally knocked out by eventual gold medallist Michael Spinks in the selection trial final. In a fight Greb was winning quite handily, Spinks put him down for the full count with a perfectly-timed left hook midway through the third round. It was quite a setback for a young man tipped for Olympic glory, made even more hard to take when Spinks won the gold. Soon after, Greb had spoken of his determination to make up for that disappointment in '04, but it now appears that he's abandoned that plan. Whatever Greb's reasons, the amateur game's loss will clearly be the professional one's gain. The IBL has already confirmed that eight Olympic medallists will be competing in its Middleweight division and the addition of Greb will go a long way towards making it perhaps the IBL's most exciting division when competition gets underway...

I'm currently 30% done on selecting the fighters for the five divisions in the IBL (Light Heavys all selected, plus half of the Middleweights). I should be able to put a bit of a dent into it this weekend and once they're all finalised I can start making some posts regarding the IBL's "upcoming selection trials".
As I said in the post about Harry Greb, the Middleweights will just be stacked with talent. Because of the tournament format, some excellent American Middles are going to miss out on the World Championship tourney. It's gonna be exciting seeing which ones qualify and which ones don't.

Sweetness I'm really looking forward to the start of the IBL. Quick question I just thought of will there be any weight jumping after it gets started?

THIRTEEN DAYS AND COUNTING
Tuesday 23 April 2002 Around the sporting world, excitement continues to build as the selection trials for the International Boxing League's regional World Championship qualifiers and "Future Contender" series draw near. With the first week of trials scheduled to start on Monday 6 May, the sport's popularity seems to know no limit. The full schedule of trials for the first week (Monday 6 May - Sunday 12 May) is: NORTH AMERICA - Staples Center, Los Angeles, California SOUTH AMERICA - Luna Park, Buenos Aires, Argentina EUROPE - MEN Arena, Manchester, England ASIA - Osaka Dome, Osaka, Japan AFRICA - Carnival City Big Top Arena, Johannesburg, South Africa IBL Chief Director James Molk took time out from his busy schedule to discuss the looming selection trials. "It's just tremendously exciting," said Molk. "There's been some talk in the past few days about the silence from myself and the IBL. There's a pretty simple explanation, which is that we've been working hard to make absolutely sure that these trials go off without a hitch. When I announced our formation, I said that the league would be the most professionally-run sporting organisation in the world and we plan to live up to those words. These trials will be the first contact that many people have with us and we want to leave a good first impression." Molk will be part of the team attending the trials in Africa. Set to fly out to Johannesburg on Friday, his feelings of anticipation were clear to see as he spoke. "I'm enthusiastic about the level of talent we'll discover, not just in Africa but all over the world. As everyone knows, the HBF's African Boxing League has been a great success and we believe that the IBL will succeed in making boxing even more popular in the region. The other trials are going to be really exciting, especially in Japan. They're boxing's biggest fans outside of America and to know that we'll be giving many Japanese fighters a chance to compete professionally is really satisfying." Asked about last week's Sanchez-Saldivar controversy, Molk shrugged his shoulders and sighed. "I've never seen two men with such hatred for each other," he said. "We were going to sit down with both of them in the same room, but it was just too difficult. So we spoke to each of them separately and all I can do is warn everyone not to miss it when they clash in the ring. I've told them both that there will be consequences if anything approaching the nightclub incident is repeated. Whether they'll take that to heart or not, I can't say." When questioned about his relationship with HBF President Michael Vincennes, Molk was quick to respond. "Nothing has changed," he said. "I still have a lot of respect for the man. Some unfortunate things were said in the days after we revealed ourselves and I get the feeling that the public, and the media, would have been happy if it just kept on going, day after day. I'm happy it didn't and I'm sure that he is, too. He's obviously busy running his federation and I've been doing the same thing. We don't have to be friends, and, even though I believe the best thing for boxing would be for it to be governed by one organisation, I see no reason why we can't peacefully exist side-by-side."

MOLK OVERWHELMED BY
RECEPTION IN JOHANNESBURG Monday 29 April 2002 Having arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa early Saturday morning, International Boxing League Chief Director James Molk spoke today of the incredibly positive welcoming he and his fellow IBL representatives have received. "I'm really just blown away by the reception they've given us," said Molk, during an interview at Johannesburg's Parktonian All-Suite Hotel. "There's so many people here excited about what boxing is going to do for this country and the continent. It's just made me even more enthusiastic about next week's trials." Molk had said in recent days that each weight division in the IBL will have an African region in the World Championship qualifying tournament, with South Africa likely to make a significant contribution. "The HBF has already given everyone a look at the boxing talent that Africa possesses," he said. "The International Boxing League will do the same thing, I'm sure." Besides South Africa, the IBL's African selection trials will cover Nigeria, Congo, Ghana, Zambia and Egypt during the coming six weeks. "I'm really looking forward to it," said Molk. "What we'll be doing here is creating a new sporting league from the ground up. We're going to discover athletes who, without the IBL, might never have their talents exposed. I'm not afraid to say that it's a great thing we're doing."

"LIKE CAMPING OUT FOR MICHAEL JACKSON TICKETS"
Friday 3 May 2002 It's now just three days until the first of the International Boxing League's selection trials for their regional World Championship qualifying tournaments start and in Osaka, Japan, boxing fever is in full swing. Almost 300 people are currently camped out near the Osaka Dome, the venue for the IBL's Japan trials. They started turning up on Wednesday and the number has steadily grown during the past couple of days. Perhaps half of them are deadly serious about their ambitions to become professional boxers. They are fully aware of not just the strict physical fitness criterias they will have to pass, but also the criteria in regards to pure boxing talent. The other half are mainly family and friends of those who plan to audition, happy to share in the excitement and communal atmosphere that comes with the anticipation of next week's events. "It's like camping out for Michael Jackson tickets back in the '80s," said Saruwatari Tsubasa, whose 19 year-old son Yamada will be endeavouring to gain selection in the Lightweight division. "Everyone here is so excited about next week, about the future of boxing here in Japan. Personally, I'm very hopeful that my son will be successful." It must be assumed that these 300 people will just be the tip of the iceberg when the IBL's trials start here next week, leading one to wonder if one week will be enough for the league's officials to evaluate all the talent that will be on show. "That won't be a problem," said IBL Chief Director Raymond Bell, who will oversee the league's Asian selection trials. "We've got twenty scouts who will be working on this twelve hours a day for the whole week, aswell as close to 100 support staff. Believe me, if you present yourself here and you have the talent, you will be noticed."

Been awhile since the IBL got any love but good stuff as always. Always love any refence to back when Michael Jackson wasn't a complete freak It'll be intereting to see who comes out of the trials. For some reason, I have a feeling that some interesting characters are going to be discovered in during the trials in North America, Europe, and Australia.

I guess I was just content to let it seem like there wasn't much that was newsworthy coming from the IBL in the lead up to the trials. I've been very slack getting the final list of fighters arranged, which is something I'll have to do this weekend. Otherwise, it will be a bit difficult to mention names when I start making the posts dealing with the selection trials (which start "in the universe" in just three days, as the previous post mentioned). Rest assured, the IBL will pick up very soon because of this fact. ![]()

Cool, glad to see that the IBL is going to pick up again soon. I have question, I doubt really know much about the lower divisions or asian fighters, so is that Yamada Tsubasa a real fighter, I couldn't find anything on him but I know that sometimes they fight under different names.

Okay, folks, I've made a little change in regards to the format of the IBL's World Championship tournaments.
I've changed the amount of fighters who qualify from the regional stages from 12 to 24. This means the top four in each region will qualify. The 24 fighters will be divided into four groups of six, with the winners of each group qualifying for the tournament's semi-finals. I did this for two reasons: 1) It will simply make the whole thing more exciting. 2) Seeing as the groups are based on regional lines, some will have more talent in them than others. Allowing more fighters to qualify from the regional stage will mean more talented fighters in the WC tournament. Post #7 has been edited to reflect this change. |

WE HAVE LIFTOFF
Monday 6 May 2002 Today saw the eagerly-anticipated commencement of the International Boxing League's tournament selection trials. At venues in Los Angeles, Beunos Aires, Osaka, Johannesburg and Manchester, the IBL began the process of picking the boxers who will take part in regional qualifying for their World Championship tournament in five different weight divisions: Light-Heavyweight, Middleweight, Welterweight, Lightweight and Featherweight. *** For the next six days, Johannesburg's Carnival City Big Top Arena will play the role of host for the IBL's South African selection trials. Leading the African selection team is the man who is primarily responsible for the league's birth: Chief Director James Molk. Sporting a freshly shaven pate, Molk spoke in front of an audience of some 200 hopefuls and their families. "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm so happy that so many of you have made the choice to join us here this week," said Molk. "I can't begin to tell you how much it means, not only to me, but to the entire International Boxing League. During the coming six days, our team of expert scouts will evaluate each one fo you: firstly, we'll conduct strict medical and fitness tests on every individual to ensure that you can safely compete as boxers in the IBL. If you pass these tests, you will be evaluated in regards to your natural boxing skill and talent. Taking this into account, it's best that I say right now that many of you will not succeed in your goal of becoming competitors in the IBL. It's only fair and honest of me to let you know this up front. As has already been revealed, we have a limited number of spots on our roster. Only the most talented amongst you will qualify. I don't apologise for that, because the International Boxing League is not about giving false hope. We are not going to sign up individuals if we don't believe that they have a reasonabale chance of success. I believe that knowing this will give each one of you the determination to push yourselves to excellence during these selection trials. I'm really looking forward to the next six days and so is our entire team. I want to wish each and every one of you the best of luck. Thank you." Molk received a warm round of applause as he moved off to speak with his advisors. Soon after, the task of conducting the many medical/fitness tests had started. James Molk walked through the arena, speaking with IBL staffers, stopping to chat to a number of the young hopefuls and making sure everything was running like clockwork. The International Boxing League's South African selection trials were in full swing, and James Molk could not have been happier... *** (to be continued, with news from the selection trials in L.A., Beunos Aires, Osaka and Manchester...)

Great stuff as always, it'll be interesting to see how the trials turn out and see what the lineups for the divisions are going to be.
