CLEVELAND UNDERCARD HIGHLIGHTS... * Regarded as the favourite to finish at the top of the USA Central group Pittsburgh's Billy Conn improved to 2-0 with a workmanlike unanimous decision win against fellow Pennsylvanian Steve Little (60-55 on all three cards). It wasn't the most electrifying stoush, especially compared to others that featured on the night. But there was no doubting Conn's class and ability as he controlled the tempo throughout, Little never looking like threatening him. * In a considerable upset Indianapolis native Marvin Johnson climbed off the canvas early in round one before going on to score a 3rd round TKO victory over Milwaukee's Eric Bengtson. Johnson found himself on his back after eating a flush overhand right 35 seconds into the contest and despite Bengtson finding the mark with an uppercut, a hard straight right and a jolting combination Johnson survived the round. He then rallied superbly in the 2nd, pounding Bengtson with a succession of smashing blows, the best of which was a chin-snapping uppercut that staggered the Wisconsin native a minute in. The crowd were on the edge of their seats as the two combatants came out for round three and Johnson maintained the momentum, driving a right hook into Bengtson's midsection. The punch brought a pained expression to Bengtson's face and when Johnson tagged him with a perfect right cross soon after the highly-fancied 19 year-old slumped to the canvas. He only just beat the count but Johnson was like a dog on a bone, staggering his man with a three-punch salvo, a left hook and another combo that led to referee Eddie Cotton calling an end to the bout, Johnson the winner by TKO at the 2:22 mark of the 3rd. Looking out on his feet moments before Bengtson pleaded for the fight to continue as Johnson celebrated with his corner crew, the Indiana slugger improving to 2-0(1) after defeating Cincinnati's Alexander Wright on debut. Very little had been made of Johnson's ability before the start of these regional tournaments but in his first two bouts the 20 year-old has proven himself to be quite a warrior. As for Bengtson, he's still winless after he rallied late to secure a draw against Harold Johnson on debut. He was picked as one of the favourites to progress to the World Championship tournament from this group and was expected to be too classy for his Indianapolis opponent tonight. Clearly the "bombs away!" nature of the contest did not suit him and at 0-1-1 he'll need to string a series of wins together to get back in contention. * Philadelphia's Harold Johnson rebounded from his late debut meltdown against Bengtson to score his first pro victory, defeating Toledo native Lindell Holmes by unanimous decision (58-55, 59-54, 58-55). This was another action-packed encounter, the opening half being pretty even before Johnson floored Holmes in the 4th and dominated the final couple of rounds to secure the victory. |

NAPOLES EDGES RODRIGUEZ Olympic silver medallist Jose Napoles improved his professional record to 2-0(1) tonight with a hard-fought unanimous decision win over compatriot Luis Rodriguez in front of some 35,000 spectators at Havana's Gran Stadium. Both combatants are regarded as being amongst the top Welterweights in the world and they produced a contest worthy of such praise. Napoles was fast out of the gates, dominating the opening round and cutting Rodriguez over the left eye with a hard right hand. He maintaining control in round two but from that point on it became a much more competitive affair. IN CLASH OF CUBAN CONTENDERS Monday 14 October 2002 Rodriguez produced some great work in round three to get himself into the contest, coming close to dropping the Olympian with a hard uppercut late in the frame. Neither man was able to claim the upperhand through a terribly even final three rounds as they traded lightning-fast, powerful blows and refused to take a backward step. Napoles was rewarded for his impressive start and took the verdict by scores of 59-56 and 58-57 (twice), the two men embracing warmly after the announcement and the crowd on their feet in applause. Napoles landed 137 of 455 punches (.301), Rodriguez 147 of 365 (.403). "I have a lot of respect for him," said Napoles. "He did not have the best amateur career but I know he's got a lot of talent and I was very weary of that. He had some bad luck on debut, and one of us had to win tonight but I hope he can go on from here and qualify for the World Championship tournament. He is too good not to." The defeat saw Rodriguez fall to 0-1-1 and while his opponent tonight was of the highest quality he'll need to start winning sooner rather than later. *** Earlier in the evening the Puerto Rican duo of Felix Trinidad and Wilfred Benitez were both victorious. Trinidad bounced back from his shock debut loss to score a 4th round KO of compatriot Angel Espada while Benitez was too good for his Dominican Republic opponent Miguel Montilla, winning by unanimous decision (58-57, 59-55, 58-56). A silver medallist in Sydney, Trinidad had been humiliated by the Cuban Jose Stable last month but looked fantastic tonight, flooring Espada two minutes into the opening round and then knocking him out cold with an overhand right a minute into the 4th, Espada dropping to one knee before falling sideways to the canvas.

MCLARNIN HELD TO DRAW Mexico's Gaspar Ortega has spoiled the hometown debut of Canadian native Jimmy McLarnin, producing a spirited effort to hold the highly-regarded 17 year-old to a draw tonight at Vancouver's Exhibition Gardens. After a competitive six rounds none of the three judges could split the combatants, each scorecard showing a 57-57 verdict. Considered one of the favourites to emerge as the International Boxing League's inaugural Welterweight World Champion, McLarnin appeared surprised by Ortega's aggressive tactics in the opening round but adjusted quickly to take both the 2nd and 3rd rounds in convincing fashion. But just as it appeared that he was in the driver's seat the Mexican answered back strongly to claim the 4th and 5th.BY ORTEGA IN VANCOUVER Tuesday 15 October 2002 McLarnin wore a frustrated countenance as he sat on his stool before the final round but he came up with a solid three minutes, Ortega shutout in the stanza until scoring with a nice combination late. It was fortunate for the hometown hero that he finished the fight so well as the effort saw him avoid what would have been a humbling defeat. Ortega is a talented fighter but, unlike McLarnin, is not expected to feature in the later stages of the World Championship tournament. His performance was an admirable one and McLarnin gave him full credit afterwards. "I have to admit I underestimated him a little," he conceeded. "The guy was fantastic from the opening bell and I honestly thought I'd worn him down by the 4th but he never gave in. It was a helluva challenge for me to avoid defeat and it's something I'll really learn from." Both men are now 1-0-1, Ortega having defeated the Texan Maurice Watkins on debut while McLarnin had accounted for Ortega's fellow Mexican Rene Arredondo. *** On the undercard Fort Worth's Donald Curry and Los Angeles native Jack Thompson both scored KO victories to secure a share of 1st place in the North America West regional group. Curry decimated Oakland's Charley Shipes with a four-punch salvo midway through round three, Thompson bringing an abrupt end to his clash with Rene Arredondo when he turned his lights out with a flush right hand in the 2nd round. Mexico's Pipino Cuevas is the only other 2-0 competitor in the group. He cruised to a unanimous decision win over compatriot Kid Azteca.

BRONZE MEDALLIST OUTHUSTLED IN ROME In something of a surprise outcome Italian bronze medallist Duilio Loi was outfought by compatriot Bruno Arcari tonight at the Sports Palace in Rome. Arcari proved too aggressive, enthusiastic and tough for Loi to handle and took a 58-57, 59-56, 58-57 unanimous decision verdict to improve to 2-0. Arcari set the tone early, dominating the opening two rounds before bloodying Loi's nose in round four and leading by at least two points on all three judge's cards heading into the final stanza. It was only then that Loi showed some of the talent that had led to many proclaiming him as a lock to top the Welterweight division's Europe/Africa regional group but as the saying goes, it was too little too late. Arcari savoured the victory afterwards, ecstatic that he had caused such a boilover and saying that he hoped the win would bring him "some respect from the local media", who have heaped praise upon Loi in recent weeks.Wednesday 16 October 2002 Germany's Gustave Eder remained perfect with a unanimous decision victory over Nigeria's Ademola Udeze in the Co-Feature. Udeze had scored a surprisingly-dominant victory over Ghana's Ike Quartey on debut but couldn't reproduce that performance tonight as Eder floored him late in round two and cruised to a 58-56, 60-55, 58-56 victory. As for Quartey, he engaged in an action-packed tussle with British fighter Lloyd Honeyghan. It was a much improved performance by the Ghanian, the two men exchanging volumes of leather with Honeyghan rallying late to sweep each judge's card in the 5th and 6th and force a drawn verdict (58-57 (Quartey), 57-57, 59-55 (Honeyghan)). |

Thanks, Jeff. As I said in the HBF thread, I'm currently on holiday. However, for various reasons I haven't been able to get as much writing done as I would have liked. I hope to be pretty busy here during the coming 3-4 days.

RAY OVERCOMES MCGIRT IN MIAMI In a contest that was poised on a knife edge throughout Florida Alliance member James Ray scored a close unanimous decision victory over New York's James "Buddy" McGirt tonight at Miami's American Airlines Arena. Each judge scored the contest 59-57, Ray winning a close final round to secure the win. Amongst the second series of Welterweight regional qualifying bouts it had been hyped as a must-watch affair, James Ray having pushed Olympic Champion Ray Leonard to the brink of defeat before settling for a draw on debut while McGirt had dropped a split decision to Mississippi's Eddie Perkins. In addition, McGirt had lost out to Leonard in the Olympic selection trials back in 2000 and has made his intentions clear in recent months that revenge is on his mind.Thursday 17 October 2002 These two talented youngsters produced a fantastic fight. McGirt came out smoking and caught Ray with a series of flush shots early in round one but Ray's response was brilliant and came before the bell had sounded to end the round. He staggered McGirt with a hard uppercut and then buckled his legs once more with a jolting right cross late in the frame. The rally was enough to convince each judge to score the round 10-10. After an uneventful first minute Ray had the better of round two, the 21 year-old hurting McGirt with a straight right at the midpoint and then backing him up with another thunderous cross as the stanza drew to an end. McGirt produced his best work of the fight in the 3rd, pounding Ray with a trio of combinations late after Ray had started it solidly. The pace slowed in round four but the final two rounds of the bout proved fiercely competitive. The last minute of the 5th was heartstopping, Ray shaking McGirt's cage with a three-punch salvo before the New Yorker snapped his head back with a flush uppercut moments before the bell. McGirt was travelling well through the top half of the final round, finding the mark with another big uppercut early before working the body. But Ray finished with a flurry, some pinpoint combinations paving the way for perhaps the best punch of the fight, an uppercut thrown with impeccable timing that came close to sending McGirt to the canvas. His knee grazed the mat but he somehow stayed on his feet and stumbled back onto the ropes, Ray trying to finish him off but failing. When it was all over both men claimed victory, the packed arena on their feet applauding. Bitter over the verdict, McGirt quickly congratulated Ray and departed the ring, shaking his head in disgust all the way back to the dressing rooms. He connected with 145 of 359 shots (.404), Ray 110 of 266 (.414). "Ain't matter how many y'all land," said Ray, his cousin Elmer flanking him. "The brother just ain't good enough t' win rounds, see? He inconsis'ent. That's why he lose, no doubt." "Big relief, y'all. Big relief," Ray said when asked how he felt about the win. "Feel like I let one slip 'way 'gains' Leonard. Ain't wanna see a repeat here, man, 'specially in front o' my peeps. Feels good, y'all, 'cause those two brothers maybe the toughes' in the group, see? Good to have them fights over 'n' done with." *** In the Co-Feature, the man who has been picked by many to be crowned the IBL's inaugural World Welterweight Champion put on an outstanding show. Ray Leonard mesmorized, bamboozled and frustrated the Canadian Johnny Greco on the way to a dominant unanimous decision win (59-53, 60-52, 59-53). Greco tasted the canvas midway through the opening round and then again late in the 3rd. By the end of the 5th he was a thoroughly beaten man and only had some success in the final round because Leonard eased off completely. |

A MAGICAL NIGHT IN OSAKA Saturday 19 October 2002 With International Boxing League Chief Director James Molk watching at ringside, tonight's Osaka Dome Welterweight fight card was a near perfect one for the quartet of Japanese fighters on show. 20 year-old Hiroki Gushiken improved to 2-0 with a convincing unanimous decision win over his talented Filipino opponent Emmanuel Torres in the main event (58-56, 59-55, 58-56) while earlier in the evening Akio Kameda and Jiro Suzuki were both victorious before Shoji Ohashi was held to a draw by the tough Thailander Saman Sukothai in the co-feature. Surprisingly, Molk was making his first visit to Japan and had said during the week that he was "looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere of a Japanese fight card". Afterwards he confirmed that it had exceeded his expectations, the IBL's boss heaping praise upon the enthusiasm and support that the crowd had shown for their local fighters. "All the way through the early months of the HBF's tournaments I was amazed at the crowds in Japan," he said. "Just from watching on the television you could feel their love and passion for the sport of boxing. Now to have experienced that in person, all I can say is "Wow". This was an incredible night and I just know that with this kind of support behind them our Japanese competitors are going to go far in the IBL." |
