ROSARIO-CAMACHO RIVALRY Puerto Rico's two most talented Lightweights Edwin Rosario and Hector Camacho were both victorious in regional qualifying action at San Juan's Escobar Stadium tonight, but that wasn't the biggest news of the evening. That was reserved for after the final punches had been thrown when it was revealed that the two will clash in series three on the 27th of November. Having just scored a tough split decision win over compatriot Sammy Serrano, Camacho was confronted by Rosario moments after the series three schedule was unveiled and the two engaged in a heated exchange of trash talking. Camacho appeared to take it as something of a joke but Rosario looked all too serious.INTENSIFIES IN SAN JUAN Wednesday 23 October 2002 After being surprisingly held to a draw by Claude Noel on debut Rosario was fantastic tonight, bombing out the Dominican Republic native Teo Cruz in the 1st round. He attacked from the opening bell, stunning Cruz with a pulverizing uppercut and maintaining a relentless assault until referee Ray Solis halted the contest at the 2:51 mark. Rosario then proclaimed afterwards that Camacho would receive the same treatment when they eventually meet. As for the cocky extrovert himself, Camacho faced a much tougher opponent in the shape of Serrano, who is one of the favourites to qualify for the World Championship tournament from this group. Camacho had dismantled another of his compatriots Alfredo Escalara on debut in eye-catching fashion but Serrano gave him a much sterner test. He showed in the opening round that he possesses a jab to rival Camacho's and while the favourite appeared to control the middle rounds it was a pretty close contest throughout. Serrano finished with some nice work in the final stanza but his efforts weren't quite good enough and Camacho took a 58-56, 56-58, 58-56 decision. Camacho has now secured wins over two of the real talents of the group and in those fights has landed an average of 31.8 punches per round at an accuracy rate of 42.5%. His opponents have averaged 21.1 punches per round at just 23.1%. Rosario is a brawler, a power puncher who will come after him and be right there in front of him. Unless he can land a devastating knockout punch this reporter foresees an ugly night for him against Camacho. *** Earlier on the card Olympic silver medallist Orlando Zulueta turned back the determined challenge of fellow Cuban Angel Robinson Garcia. Zulueta won a very tight bout by majority decision (58-57, 57-57, 58-57) to improve to 1-1 after having been upset by Vilomar Fernandez on debut. As those scorecards show Zulueta was not far from another defeat. He never looked comfortable during what was a lacklustre bout and will need to show some improvement in the future if he wants to live up to the hype and adoration that his silver medal winning effort has brought him. |

DURAN STEALS THE SHOW IN NICARAGUA 17 year-old Panama-born Lightweight Roberto Duran continued an impressive start to his professional boxing career with a 3rd round KO of Argentina's Carlos Aro tonight at the Estadio Nacional in Managua, Nicaragua. After punishing Aro during the opening two rounds Duran sent him to the canvas with a devastating right uppercut two minutes into round three. It was a performance that will have the other competitors in this talent-rich division keeping an eye on the hard-hitting slugger, if they weren't already. Duran had dominated Aro's compatriot Carlos Canete on debut and tonight's showing was even more destructive.Thursday 24 October 2002 *** Regarded as a talent almost the equal of Duran hometown hero Alexis Arguello recorded his first professional victory in the main event, defeating the Argentinian Vicente Derado by split decision (58-55, 56-57, 59-54). It was a clinical, controlled effort from Arguello, one that deserved a unanimous decision verdict. It would have received it if not for the questionable judging of Panama's Carlos Berrocal who someone awarded the bout to Derado and felt the full force of the crowd's derision when the verdict was revealed. After his shock loss to the Panamanian Ismael Laguna on debut, tonight Arguello produced the type of effort that will be expected of him throughout the tournament. He opened the bout in promising fashion before struggling somewhat in the 2nd and 3rd. But he dominated the contest's bottom half, battering Derado to such an extent in the 5th that all three judges scored the round 10-8 despite no knockdown occuring. "The Explosive Thin Man" connected with a number of punishing shots in the final stanza, also. The night had a sting in its tail when the schedule for series three was announced. It included the following matchup: ALEXIS ARGUELLO VS ROBERTO DURAN The crowd erupted at the news, some excited but many sounding worried that their man will have to take on Duran so early in the tournament. Based on their performances so far Duran will go into the clash as a warm favourite. The bout is the second series three blockbuster announced for the Lightweight division in the space of 24 hours, bitter Puerto Rican rivals Edwin Rosario and Hector Camacho also scheduled to clash next month... |

LOCKRIDGE SHOCKS WHITAKER ON Tonight the International Boxing League saw the biggest upset to date of it's regional qualifying tournaments as Olympic Lightweight gold medallist Pernell Whitaker fell to his first professional defeat at the hands of Texas native Rocky Lockridge on an evening of surprise results at Mexico's Estadio Saltillo. Regarded as the outright favourite to be crowned the division's first World Champion, it had been said in recent days that Whitaker had been troubled during training in the lead-up to the fight, although the exact reason was not disclosed. He looked somewhat underdone at yesterday's weigh-in, something that stood out compared to the ripped, muscular physique that the tough Texan displayed.NIGHT OF UPSETS IN MEXICO! Friday 25 October 2002 Lockridge started fantastically, stunning Whitaker in the opening minute of the contest with a three-punch combo and a pair of flush, damaging right hands. Whitaker fought his way back into the round through the middle minute but when Lockridge caught him with another hard right as the stanza drew to a close it was clear that he was capable of springing the upset. The rest of the contest did not live up to the promise of the 1st round but Lockridge maintained a slight edge, winning rounds two and four quite comfortably. It was only in the 6th and final round that Whitaker showed something approaching his best work as he peppered Lockridge with a succession of blows. But it turned out to be too little, too late and Lockridge exclaimed triumphantly when the verdict was announced, the Dallas-born slugger a winner by majority decision (59-56, 57-57, 58-56). "Told all of you!" Lockridge said. "Right back after series one, said I could beat the brother. All o' ya'll laughed at me, y'all remember that? Ain't nothin' special 'bout the brother, see? He's just a man like the rest of us, ain't perfect or unbeatable. I knew that goin' in and I proved it to everyone. Ain't no favourites, see? Cain't be no favourites this early in the thang, you know? Dude won a gold medal two freakin' years ago! That ain't gonna do a damn thing for him here and now, man. He ain't remarkable, y'all. He ain't." A downcast Whitaker left the ring shortly after the verdict was announced, looking disappointed but probably not as disappointed as one would expect. Perhaps the problems he experienced in recent weeks are more serious than the outcome of a boxing match, although at this time Whitaker would be the only one who knows the truth of that... *** The pattern of unexpected results was set in the second bout of the night as the highly regarded New Yorker Tony Canzoneri was convincingly outfought by Philadelphia's Tyrone Everett, who Whitaker had taken care of on debut last month. In a fight that never reached any dramatic heights Everett took control in the 2nd round and never relinquished it, maintaining the upperhand without setting the world on fire. Canzoneri looked listless and, to be honest, uninterested. Everett was awarded a unanimous decision victory (59-56, 60-55, 58-57). In the very next bout Canada's Arthur King held the talented, determined New Orleans native Joe Brown to a draw (58-56, 57-57, 56-58). It appeared that Brown had done enough to secure a win, especially after some impressive work in the 2nd and a dominant effort in the penultimate round. But King won the final stanza on all three cards and it was enough to earn him the draw. Brown wore a bemused expression when the verdict was announced, exclaiming "You gotta be kiddin' me!" and questioning one of the IBL officials. *** After Whitaker's extraordinary loss in the co-feature Bronx native Richie Plunkett stepped in the ring for the main event against the crowd favourite Rafael Limon. The Estadio Saltillo crowd gave the Mexican a thunderous welcome to the ring and they continued to be mighty vocal with their support for him during the fight. As it turned out, Plunkett became one of the only favoured fighters on the night to record a victory, the 27 year-old improving to 2-0 with a majority decision win (58-56, 57-57, 58-56). Without a doubt it was the fight of the evening, both combatants showing a willingless to engage toe-to-toe making for some fantastic exchanges. Plunkett opened up all guns blazing in round one but Limon fired back strongly before those three minutes were even over. He stunned Plunkett with a hard uppercut a minute from the bell and then got the better of some fiercely-traded shots late in the stanza. Round two followed a similar path, Plunkett controlling the early going before Limon roared back into it in the final minute. In round three Plunkett gave a clear illustration of why he's regarded as an outstanding chance of qualifying for the World Championship tournament as he pounded Limon throughout, dominating the round and almost forcing referee Julio Alvarado to step in and stop the fight. In the first minute Limon was tagged by a straight right, a left hook and smashing, flush jab. Plunkett then fired off some damaging blows in the bottom third of the round, a right hook and a left-right-left combo staggering Limon. The 4th was a closer affair but Plunkett was back to his fantastic best in the 5th, jolting lefts and rights pounding Limon into submission and bringing boos from the crowd. Plunkett inflamed them further when he thumped his chest and shouted excitedly as he returned to his corner. In both the 5th and 3rd the New Yorker not only displayed a ferocious offense but a great defense, Limon missing the mark with a number of shots. Plunkett had the final round in his pocket until the Mexican rallied late, the strong finish enough to convince all three judges to award it to him and make the verdict closer than it deserved to be. Punch totals Limon: 114/556 (.205) Plunkett: 172/436 (.394) "The guy's one tough hombre," Plunkett said. "He can really take a shot, you know? It was a big challenge because it felt like I wasn't just fighting him, but this whole crowd, also. They gave him great support and I'm sure that helped him a lot. So taking that on, I feel like this was a really good win. After what happened earlier it looked like the boxing gods were out to claim some scalps so I'm feeling fortunate that I made it through unscathed." *** Moments after Plunkett's post-fight interview was completed the schedule of matchups for series three was announced, the big fights that were unveiled on Wednesday and Thursday joined by another one from the North American group: Tony Canzoneri vs Richie Plunkett There's no doubt that the IBL will stage the card in New York City. The ideal venue is obviously Madison Square Garden but with it being the headquarters of the Heavyweight Boxing Federation it might not be possible, unless an agreement is reached between the two organisations. Considering the co-operation they've shown in regards to amateur boxing, it shouldn't be a problem... Last edited by kenyan_cheena : 08-22-2008 at 07:36 AM. |

Richie, good scrap, and congratulations. Who do you plan on having in your corner for the Canzoneri fight, as I am considering attending the fight, and I'm just curious.
This is an outstanding universe, by the way. Greg

TSUBASA OUTDUELS KOSAKA Talented Japanese Lightweight Yamada Tsubasa scored his first professional victory tonight, outpointing compatriot Teruo Kosaka in the main event at Tokyo's Ariake Coliseum. The 19 year-old took a comfortable unanimous decision verdict (60-55 on all three cards) in a busy effort. Tsubasa threw 532 punches and landed 226 of them, close to three times as many as his outclassed opponent. Kosaka only came close to Tsubasa's level in the 3rd, a round that each judge scored 10-10.IN TOKYO SHOWDOWN Saturday 26 October 2002 Tsubasa is regarded as Japan's best chance of success in the IBL's Lightweight division and made his way to the ring accompanied by the eerie, bass-heavy trip-hop of DJ Krush's "Meiso". He received an enthusiastic round of applause from the crowd and expressed afterwards how nervous he'd been about fighting in the city of his birth for the first time. His main weapon throughout the bout were the blinding combinations that he found the mark with time and again. In a fantastic display, he showed that he's capable of both outboxing an opponent and bombing away on them. *** Earlier in the evening Hiroshi Kobayashi improved to 2-0 with a split decision win over Korea's Hwan-Kil Yuh, but Jaguar Kakizawa struggled against his Filipino opponent Rene Barrientos and was held to a draw. Speaking of the Filipinos, their two most talented representatives in the group had varied results, with 17 year-old Gabriele Elorde winning his bout with Japan's Kurokawa Taiki by unanimous decision while Ben Villaflor was surprisingly held to a draw by his fellow countryman Johnny Sato. Villaflor is both winless and undefeated, having also fought to a draw against Tsubasa on debut last month. The group has a big clash to look forward to in series three as Tsubasa and Elorde are scheduled to step in the ring against each other, more than likely in the Philippines... |

TOP FEATHERWEIGHTS SETTLE FOR DRAW AT SABINA PARK Monday 28 October 2002 Tonight's Featherweight main event at Jamaica's Sabina Park ended in a draw, local favourite Tyrone Burton and Cuba's Eligio Montalvo staging an entertaining contest before settling for the 58-58, 59-57 (Burton), 58-58 verdict. The teenager known as "Kid Chocolate" to his friends came into the fight as a warm favourite but, as was the case in his debut, Burton showed that he's a real talent. Going into the bout's bottom half Montalvo appeared to be in control, producing some impressive work in both the 2nd and 3rd. But after an action-packed 4th Burton swept the final two rounds, an aggressive disposition helping him to avoid a hometown defeat. Burton and Montalvo were both victorious on debut and so they remain undefeated. In the opinion of many they might just stay that way for the remainder of these regional qualifiers with only Puerto Rico's Juan LaPorte looking to be of similar quality. LaPorte improved to 2-0 in the co-feature with a win against Nesley Haven of the Bahamas. The fight was not as close as the split decision verdict indicated (57-56, 56-57, 58-55) with LaPorte never really troubled and Haven waiting until the 4th round to show signs of competitiveness. |
