universe big upset thread
Since I just had one, I figured we could start an "inside the ropes" universe upset thread. This way when anyone asks we don't have to go by memory or search for it!!!!
LH Morris Harris (3 rated) scored a UD10 over HW Charley Mitchell (8 rated). Both fighters at prime Harris was 11-13 entering the fight and Mitchell was (27-10). Harris knocked Mitchell down 3 times in route to a 96-91/96-91/95-92 UD. I think that one qualifies esp. since it wasn't due to a cut. |

If you've been following my HBF thread, you'd be aware that Joe Beckett (rated 3) scored a 6 round unanimous decision victory over Jack Johnson (rated 12), thanks to a last round knockdown. It was both fighter's professional debuts, so both were at the beginning stage.
No other major upsets besides that one, though. |

In the opening round of the WBA Welterweight tournament in my Federal Boxing Alliance, #15 seed Rafael Pineda stopped #2 seeded Felix Trinidad on a first round TKO. Quick stoppage, but even so, a huge upset.

In my universe Domingo Guillen has been spoiler extrodinaire. He is rated a 1 and has an overall record of 3-12-0 (0) One of his wins is a majority Decision verdict over Pete Herman 11-3-2 (2) (rated an 11) In his last fight he captured a DQ7 win over Frankie Neal (Rated a 6) not really an upset since he was getting beaten but a win is a win.

Probably the big couple that stand out to me from the WWBU are the disqualification of Greg Page (10) that sent Frankie Daniels (3) through to the HW Title Tournament final and a recent upset of LHW prospect Victor Galindez (9) by Fred Lenhart (can't remember his rating) who dominated him over 10 rounds including a third round knock down.

Bill Doherty 3-rated (12-13-1) scored a UD10 over Tommy Burns 8 rated (20-7-2) just now in my uni. Doherty dropped Burns 3 times. Burns was ranked 3rd going into the fight and Doherty was 39th.
Burns dropped 209.61 pp. |

In one of my pre computer crash universes, Muhammad Ali was stopped by Mel Turnbow in a heavyweight tournament for the title. Turnbow was stopped in the next round, but a huge victory none the less. I also had a modern day universe in which Oleg Masktov(sp?) knocked out Lennox Lewis to win the title and actually had two or three legitimate title defenses before Lewis won the title back.

not that big in terms of ratings 5 over an 8 ... but I just had a pre-prime Alec Greggains (5) upset Joe Butler (8) for the WBA LH title with a KO15 .... just so you know it wasn't a lucky punch it was even going into the last round.

Tommy Chandler defeated by Morris Grant
Tommy Chandler, ranked 5th overall in the Universe of Leather Boxing Association and an 8 rating, had the crap beaten out of him last night by Morris Grant, ranked #37 with a 2 rating. Grant looked like a superstar last night, raining blows to the head of Chandler all night long. Chandler was never really in the match, especially after being feeled by a sledgehammer right in the 4th. He dropped again in the 9th, both times barely beating the referee's count. Grant won the match by UD and climbs 15 places in the rankings. A heart-broken Chandler drops from 5th all the way to 23.

Wow!
The most fun I've had by far in my uni. First, lightly-regarded Morris Grant topples a tough Tommy Chandler, then up and comer Chet Shandel dumps Frank Slavin. I was pulling for Shandel, who was a serious underdog as a 3 rated fighter against the tough as nails Frank Slavin, who sports an 8 rating.
Two big upsets in the UoLBA in the month of October, 1890. |

After looking at the ORs of some modern blubberweights, I adjusted a few of the better old timers upwards.
Haven't had a remarkable upset in a long while. Three rounders can be unsettling propositions though, as it's anybody's guess sometimes. I have had a couple of real underachievers, though I won't mention any names (da bums!). Cap

Speaking of Shandel, is this the same guy who played Paul Bunyan in the Northwest for many years as an oldtimer? |

I just had Teofilo Stevenson get KO'd in 4 by a '1' rated stiff
Stevenson was undefeated and headed for an eventual South American title shot (and still is). I haven't had that big of an upset previously. |

My biggest upset so far since the rebuild has to be the Bob Armstrong(6) loss to Mike Schreck(3). Armstrong was well on his way to a potential title shot before the loss. Not a huge upset but devistating to my plans for both fighters.
