April 1891 complete fight results
In the first of 5 fight cards for the month of April, William Miller proves too much for Mike McCoole, cruising to a unanimous decision. McCoole was looking to build upon an impressive win last month against Joe Choynski, but met more than his match in the well-schooled Miller.
An intriguing undercard match pitted middleweight Gary Lockett, ranked 15th, against John Wayne Parr, ranked 17. The winner no doubt getting a ticket into June's tourney, the loser....will be auf. Lockett proves too much for Parr, dashing the Englishman's hopes for a berth in the PBF tournament. April 13, 1891 HW: William Miller 16-3-1 (2) UD12 Mike McCoole 11-3-3 (1) HW: Primo Carnera 12-6-0 (4) UD10 Scott Landsdowne 11-4-1 (2) MW: Gary Lockett 8-5-0 (5) UD8 John Wayne Parr 3-7-3 (2) HW: Posh Price 12-4-2 (2) UD6 Jack Stewert 8-9-1 (0) Tom Hinch was just the opponent the doctor ordered for Dick Matthews, who needed an impressive win to rehab his flagging reputation after a January loss to Roy Williams. Hinch was never ever in this one, as Matthews pounded him from corner to corner en route to an 8th round TKO. On the undercard, Jack Hopper destroyed Joe Heiser, dumping him 6 times in a 10 round unanimous decision. April 19, 1891 HW: Dick Matthews 19-2-0 (12) TKO8 Tom Hinch 11-5-2 (0) LW: Jack Hopper 7-2-4 (1) UD10 Joe Heiser 5-3-5 (0) HW: Dan Donnelly 12-4-1 (4) KO4 Denver Ed Smith 12-5-0 (0) HW: James Dalton 13-7-0 (5) UD6 Mike Kine 7-6-4 (0) Teofilo Stevenson dismantled Alex Garcia in a four round thrashing tonight. In an exciting Co-feature bout, Dal Hawkins walked away with an impressive win over Jake Karcher. Karcher took the early rounds, rocking Hawkins early. But Hawkins stayed the course, dropping Karcher three times in the later rounds. April 21, 1891 HW: Teofilo Stevenson 14-4-1 (6) TKO4 Alex Garcia 15-3-0 (5) LW: Dal Hawkins 8-3-2 (0) UD10 Jake Karcher 8-3-3 (1) HW: O'Neil Murray 12-5-0 (0) Draw8 Jem Roche 10-6-0 (1) HW: Tug Wilson 8-6-3 (0) UD6 Jack McAuley 7-6-2 (1) LW: Phil Bloom 8-4-1 (1) UD6 Joe Milletechia 4-8-1 (2) HW: PJ Rentzler 7-9-0 (0) Draw4 Jack Langley 7-8-1 (2) Joe Goss had little trouble disposing of Jack Stanley in tonight's main event. The big excitement belonged to the previous bout, where Eddie Reede surprised Reddy Gallagher en rounte to a 7 round TKO. In an earlier match, Mervine Thompson turned out Herbert Slade's lights in another surprising upset. Slade was dominating the match when a roundhouse right from Thompson sent him stumbling to the canvas early in round 3. Thompson sent Slade to the mat two more times within the 3rd frame to end the match. With this win, Thompson enhances his reputation as one of the more dangerous and unpredictable fighters in the heavyweight division. April 26, 1891 HW: Joe Goss 16-4-0 (4) UD12 Jack Stanley 8-2-7 (0) MW: Eddie Reede 7-5-2 (0) TKO7 Reddy Gallagher 9-3-1 (3) HW: Billy Wilson 14-3-2 (2) UD8 Keene Simmons 8-3-6 (0) HW: Mervine Thompson 11-5-0 (4) TKO3 Herbert Slade 13-6-0 (3) HW: Al Greenfield 9-8-1 (2) UD6 Morris Grant 7-9-3 (0) LW: George Siddons 7-5-2 (0) MD6 Johnny LW Clark 4-4-5 (0) Harry Gilmore demolished Edward McDonald tonight to solidify his spot among the lightweight elite. April 30, 1891 LW: Harry Gilmore 14-1-0 (4) UD12 Edward McDonald 7-1-5 (0) HW: Billy Australian Smith 15-3-1 (6) KO5 George Godfrey 9-5-2 (1) HW: Mike Brennan 13-5-0 (3) UD8 Charles Cooley 12-5-2 (2) HW: Tommy Chandler 13-6-0 (5) TKO4 Jack Gardner 10-4-2 (3) HW: Jem Smith 9-9-1 (1) Draw6 Ray Ledman 9-4-3 (2) HW: Dan Dwyer 8-5-3 (1) MDraw4 Mike Conley 6-8-4 (1) |

New PBF belt design revealed
BONNER SPRINGS - In anticipation of the upcoming Middleweight and Lightweight tourneys, The Phoenix Boxing Association today release the new design for the PBF belt.
"It's been a year in development, and I have to say, it was worth the wait," proclaims lifetime commissioner Matt Little. "We will award these new belts to tournament winners in June." The fate of the Heavyweight belt, currently held by Muhammad Ali, is unclear. But it seems likely that Ali, if he retains the belt, will be able to upgrade it as soon as it officially becomes available. A view of the new belt: Last edited by bigMatt; 09-24-2006 at 02:48 PM. |

April 1891 Middleweight and Lightweight rankings to remain secret
BONNER SPRINGS - The Phoenix Boxing Association today announced that it will delay the release of middleweight and lightweight rankings for a few days to build anticipation for the March tournaments.
PBF officials indicated it will be "a couple of weeks" before rankings are confirmed, suggesting the likelihood that this information will be revealed in the form of tournament seedings. As PBF fans most likely already know, a tournament of the top 16 fighters in the middleweight and lightweight divisions will commence in June to determine the first PBF champion in each division. This tournament will cover the months of June and July for the two divisions. No other non-heavyweight fight will be scheduled from the beginning of May until the end of July except for PBF tourney action. |

May 1891 fight cards announced
BONNER SPRINGS - The PBF's only active division has a doozy of a lineup for the month of May. The Heavyweight title belt is on the line this month, as Muhammad Ali will meet surging challenger, 5th ranked Roy Williams. Early word from the Ali camp indicated he had inked a deal to fight James J. Corbett this month for the PBF title. An unknown source from the Corbett camp today confirmed that the fight was in the works until Jimmy Elliot's camp got wind of the negotiations. Elliot threatened to sue Corbett AND Ali over what he termed a "breach of verbal commitment". According to Elliot, Corbett agreed to a rematch after their Draw earlier in the year, and Ali agreed to give the winner of this rematch a title shot. To Corbett's bitter disappointment, it was Ali's camp that blinked first, determining that Ali had little to gain from fighting Corbett and risking a lawsuit from the cantankerous Elliot. With a title shot out of reach, Jim Corbett had little choice but to take up the gauntlet tossed at his feet, and sign on for a rematch against the irrascible Jimmy Elliot. It will undoubtedly be a war this time around.
2nd ranked Dom McCaffrey, will meet Jack Fallon at the top of this month's 3rd and final Main Event. Other notable heavyweights in action this month are Dick Matthews, Tom Sayers and James Figg. Last edited by bigMatt; 09-24-2006 at 11:13 PM. |

Joe Goss probably has the best argument for the next shot, but with my randomizer, who knows whether he will get the chance. |

I was referring to the real life Ali/Big Cuban tussle that never happened. We blur the lines between reality and our little worlds down here, don't we. |

May 1891 fight results
Roy Williams came with all he had tonight, but it wasn't nearly enough to topple the champ, as Ali successfully defended his PBF belt in impressive fashion, earning a 15 round unanimous decision. Williams lasted the 15 rounds without a knockdown, but never had Ali in trouble at any point in the contest.
In action earlier this month, James J Corbett squeaked out a very tough UD win against Jimmy Elliot. I had the fight dead even after 12 rounds. The judges each had Corbett by a point. Gentleman Jim now looks to be next in line to square off with Ali in the upcoming months. May 25, 1891 HW: PBF Title: Muhammad Ali 21-0-0 (10) UD15 Roy Williams 14-4-1 (5) HW: Dick Matthews 20-2-0 (13) UD10 Jake Kilrain 10-8-0 (1) HW: O'Neil Murray 12-5-1 (0) UD8 James Dalton 14-7-0 (5) HW: Jack McAuley 7-7-2 (1) MDraw6 PJ Rentzler 7-9-1 (0) May 5, 1891 HW: James Corbett 19-1-1 (0) UD12 Jimmy Elliot 17-3-1 (3) HW: Thomas Sayers 17-2-0 (5) KO1 Bernardo Mercado 15-2-0 (7) HW: Dan Dwyer 8-5-4 (1) UD8 George Arias 13-3-0 (4) HW: Steve Taylor 9-6-2 (1) UD6 Keene Simmons 8-4-6 (0) May 1, 1891 HW: Dominic McCaffrey 18-3-0 (3) MD12 Jack Fallon 11-6-0 (1) HW: James Figg 12-6-1 (5) KO10 James Robertson Couper 9-7-0 (2) HW: Charlie Norkus 8-8-3 (2) UD8 Duncan McDonald 8-3-5 (0) HW: Jack Boylan 10-8-1 (0) UD6 Ray Ledman 9-4-4 (2) |

PBF Lightweight Tourney - 1st round pairings announced
BONNER SPRINGS- The Phoenix Boxing Federation today announced the seedings and first round pairings for the PBF Middleweight Tournament to crown the FIRST Middleweight Champ. After his war with Jack McAuliffe last month, Billy Myer enters the tourney as the only undefeated fighter, but with a tough field that includes Harry Gilmore, George Lavigne, Walter Edgerton, and a Jack McAuliffe seeking revenge, Myer's effort to retain his spotless record will be a tough task. An intriguing first round match-up pits tough fighter Harry Gilmore against the once highly-regarded but struggling Alberto Sicurella. The Argeninian could go a long way toward repairing his tattered reputation with an upset here.

PBF Middleweight Tourney underway! Round 1 results
BONNER SPRINGS - The first round of the PBF tournament is now complete, and few if any surprises were in store for today's crowd. Favorites George LaBlanche, Michael Watson, Billy McCarthy and Jack "Non Pareil" Dempsey advance. Upset pick Reddy Gallagher easily handled Bill Gabig.
The big news was 2 draws in the first, the most surprising being Mike Boden's draw against 4th seeded Billy McCarthy. The rematch proved an easy one for McCarthy. The only other upset was a mild one as Pete McCoy dropped higher ranked Jack Fogarty in 6. The highlight of the first round? That honor goes to George LaBlanche, who KO'd a surprisingly tough Charlie McCarthy with :01 seconds left in the 10th and final round. Round 2 matchups: #1 George LaBlanche vs. #8 Johnny Reagan #2 Michael Watson vs. #10 Pete McCoy #3 Jack Dempsey vs. #6 Jimmy Murray #4 Billy McCarthy vs. #12 Reddy Gallagher Below are complete 1st round results: June 1, 1891 MW: George LaBlanche 15-0-0 (10) KO10 Charles McCarthy 6-4-4 (2) MW: Michael Watson 13-0-1 (3) TKO2 Jim Carr 6-7-1 (1) MW: Jack Dempsey NP 13-0-1 (6) UD10 Gary Lockett 9-5-0 (5) MW: Billy McCarthy 12-2-0 (5) MDraw10 Mike Boden 7-2-4 (0) MW: Billy McCarthy 12-2-1 (5) UD10 Mike Boden 7-2-5 (0) MW: Reddy Gallagher 9-4-1 (3) UD10 Bill Gabig 8-1-4 (3) MW: Jimmy Murray 12-2-1 (1) UD10 Eddie Reede 8-5-2 (1) MW: Pete McCoy 9-3-2 (2) KO6 Jack Fogarty 11-2-0 (4) MW: Johnny Reagan 9-3-2 (5) MDraw10 Tom Norton 8-3-3 (1) MW: Johnny Reagan 9-3-3 (5) TKO9 Tom Norton 8-3-4 (1) |

McCarthy is a LW in my uni and he hasn't faired to well. He is 13-23-2. He is post-prime and toiling away in the club ranks. He did recently have a nice stretch where he won 8 in a row, but since has had back to back losses to George Monroe.
