Notes From Tomato City - Week One
Wow, the boys from New Haven fared better than I expected, defending the home turf.
Only 4 guys got shut out. MW Gomeo Brennan (8), WW Fausto Rodriguez (5), BW Germain Ohm (5) & FLY Fritz Chervet (3). (I'm really disappointed in Brennan, but the MW division is very tough) Without a couple of big upsets, my team would be scraping the bottom of the rankings right now. MW Anton Raadik (6) got a gift "hometown decision" against Paul Pender (8). This was a really ugly fight w/ 3 KD's, 5 Fouls, 2 Warnings, 3 Cautions, 1 Accidental Headbut, 2 Cuts & 1 Eye Swelling. (I hope Raadik continues to fight like this against the upper level fighters of the division) In his other fight, Raadik was being dominated by Walter Cartier (5) and down 3 points on 4 cards going into the 11th round before the stunning KO for the victory. At 2-0 (1), Raadik is definitely a surprise. LW Mando Ramos (5) also surprised me going 1-0-1 against much more talented competition. I think he scored the biggest upset of the evening by getting a Majority Decision over Edwin Rosario (10). In a pretty clean fight, Ramos used superior defensive skills to eek out the victory. I wouldn't call this one a hometown victory b/c Rosario managed to connect on only 10.8% of his punches for the entire fight as opposed to 40.5% for Ramos. He also scratched out a Draw against tough Rodolfo Rodriguez (7) by limiting him to a connect percentage of 18.8. As a side note, I feel really bad for Rosario, who lost both of his fights. The other is the historic first round DQ loss for a blatant low blow against division bottom feeder Steve Murray (3). Murray had only thrown 6 punches (connecting with none) before the low blow. Murray may want to shift careers and become an actor instead of a boxer. I wouldn't be surprised if this was his only victory all season. FW Terry McGovern (9) won both of his fights by impressive TKO. I was really worried about the fight w/ Troy Dorsey (6) though. When I ran a few sims between the two, Dorsey won too many for my liking. Fortunately a bad cut at 0:38 of Rnd 1 was the diffence maker in this fight. It was eventually stopped on cuts in the 3rd. (This was the only of the evening stopped by cuts) Finally, BW Eddie Cook (4) should be an interesting guy to watch. Going into Round 12 of his fight w/ Pete Frissina (5), he was down on all cards by 4,6 & 4 points before the big KO. He finished well with KD's in Rnd 10 and 11. His other fight was a real nail-biter for favorite Jose Medal (9). Each fighter scored 2 KD's in the fight and it seemed that the lowly Mr. Cook gave Medal all he could handle. Medal won 114-111, 114-110, 112-113 (hometown score), but it almost could have been another big upset. As for me, I'm more interested in the possibility of surprise upsets than actually winning the whole thing. Of course, I don't want to see my "big guns" lose, but that's what makes boxing interesting. Enough rambling, the Tomato City team needs to prepare for the trip to Brazil to take on the Brazilian Barbarians. Congrats to all who have contributed to make this happen. |

Well I tried to put together a KO or be KO'd team, looks like I did that. Surprised Wlad stayed that close with Jackson.
Disappointing loss by Starling. Arguello and McGuigan go 2-0 like I hoped. Marvin Johnson 1-1. Hope he can stay around .500 for me. Paez what the heck? Holds his own against Terris then draws with Britt. Bad start for Jorge. Glad to see my little guys go 8-3-1. It's going to be a long year for me in the LH and MW divisions. |

Love Wlad as everyone knows, Weaver - was one of my favorites growing up, his fights with Tate and Dokes were incredible. Marvin Johnson - saw him fight alot in Indiana, did the little boxing I did out of the same gym. Paez - always liked him and gotta like his son now too Arguello - my all time favorite McGuigan - also one of my favorites growing up There were some that were too talented for me to get, like Jermain Taylor. But the fact that I got 6 of my probably top 25 is pretty nice. Took Mellody only because he's done pretty well in my uni. When I got to the low rated guys, I went with power hoping for an upset or two. This could very easily go to crap also, since it's a high risk, high reward lineup. |

Gatitos vs Kangaroos - Round 2
July 17,2006
Vodafone Arena, Melbourne, Australia The Punching Gatitos took to the road for the second straight week. They found themselves on hostile ground in Australia but that didn't seem to bother them. After being humiliated in the first round by the Crusaders, the Gatitos took their first round frustration out on the hometown Kangaroos and stuffed them right back into their pouches. Looks like the Boxing Kangaroos must have done a bit too much celebrating after their first round win. Scorecard: Punching Gatitos 19-12-1(9) = 48 Boxing Kangaroos 12-19-1(3) = 28 Bout Results: (Punching Gatitos listed first) HW- Max Schmeling W TKO1 Willi Fischer HW- Max Schmeling W UD12 Joe Goddard HW- Paolino Uzcudun DRAW12 Joe Goddard HW- Paolino Uzcudun W UD12 Willi Fischer LHW- Chris Finnegan W SD12 Paul Briggs LHW- Chris Finnegan W SD12 Paul Murdoch LHW- Darius Michalczewski W KO10 Paul Murdoch LHW- Darius Michalczewski W TKO4 Paul Briggs MW- Charley Humez W UD12 Sam Soliman MW- Charley Humez W KO6 Lester Ellis MW- Luis Folledo W TKO5 Lester Ellis MW- Luis Folledo W UD12 Sam Soliman WW- Chris Christensen W KO12 Julian Holland WW- Chris Christensen L UD12 Jack Carroll WW- Jimmy Gardner W TKO10 Julian Holland WW- Jimmy Gardner W MD12 Jack Carroll LW- Pedro Carrasco W KO8 Jimmy Soo LW- Pedro Carrasco W TKO7 Renato Cornett LW- Lazlo Bognar L SD12 Renato Cornett LW- Lazlo Bognar L UD12 Jimmy Soo FW- Percy Lewis L UD12 Young Griffo FW- Percy Lewis L SD12 Jeff Fenech FW- Jose Legra L UD12 Jeff Fenech FW- Jose Legra L UD12 Young Griffo BW- Johnny Caldwell W UD12 Lionel Rose BW- Johnny Caldwell W UD12 Elley Bennett BW- Pierre Cossemyns W SD12 Elley Bennett BW- Pierre Cossemyns L UD12 Lionel Rose FLY- Johnny McCluskey L KO10 Hussein Hussein FLY- Johnny McCluskey L KO9 Vic Darchinyan FLY- Young Martin L UD12 Hussein Hussein FLY- Young Martin L KO11 Vic Darchinyan Next up: Punching Gatitos will be at home for the first time this season hosting the Muckboys from Florida. Boxing Kangaroos will visit my home state and face the Bonner Springs Bald Beavers.
