Tomato City vs Brazilian Barbarians - Round Two

July 18,2006
Olympia Hall, Sao Paulo, Brazil
The people of Brazil witnessed the best team match of the young UTBA League. Tomato City made the long journey from New Haven, CT to face the hometown Barbarians. Tonights match was decided by KO's as both teams appeared to be evenly matched. The key & deciding match may have been a draw between LHW's George Gardner and Bob Foster.

(Mark, you need to sit down and have a word or two with Vito Antuofermo. He is one of my favorites and I hate seeing him start off 0-3-1).

Scoreboard:
Tomato City 15-15-2(12) = 44
Brazilian Barbarians 15-15-2(9) = 41

Unhappy Close match, but now 0-2

Congrats to the Tomatoes!

Foster's draw and Aragon's loss to Murray were big disappointments. Olivares' loss was to a legit great in McGovern, but I've gotta have points out of those three and Roman. Espana avenges Aragon's loss? Strange.

Nice surprise in Mesi's KO of Cobb. Wasn't expecting anything from the heavies. Villemain, Sor Vorasingh and Dokes get W's!

Antuofermo is the team's biggest disappointment so far, but captain Foster can't really sit him down in good conscience after his own little slip-up this round. We'll give him one more week before the butt-chewing.

Three of first four on the road is tough, too. May have to take up residence in the cellar and battle Claybor for the first pick, LOL!

Notes From Tomato City - Round 2

Whew... the boys from New Haven barely eeked it out against a really tough team down in Brazil.

I was a little disappointed that Chuvalo lost to Dokes. He was actually ahead on 2 cards (97-93, 94-95, 96-93) going into the 10th and was stopped on cuts. He's seems to get cut up a lot.

Cobb/Mesi was a good fight w/ 2KD's each, only Cobb couldn't get back up after the 2nd. I chose Cobb b/c I was hoping he could stand in there and take a good pounding w/o getting KO'd too often.

Gardner/Foster: Foster almost ended it early w/ a KD @ 0:19 of Rnd 1, but Gardner managed to get up and returned the favor with a KD of his own in the 10th. Definitely a big upset - I pretty much had expected a loss here

Raadik/Antuofermo: VA was comfortably ahead on all cards (98-92 x 3) until the bout was stopped on cuts. VA was cut in both of his bouts. He seems to have the same problems w/ cuts as Chuvalo. Unfortunate.

Congrats to Johnny Greco: KD Oba Carr 4 times and KD Fausto Rodriguez 5 times. He's a tough S.O.B.

Biggest surprise for Tomato City: Mando Ramos is 3-0-1 (2)

Terry McGovern seems to be dominating the FW so far: 4-0 (4)

Quickest KO of the season???: Ruben Olivares KO Patrick Ford 0:42 of Rnd 1

Fritz Chervet is campaigning for the worst record: 0-4 (all by KO). He's only fought a total of 8 rounds so far...

How much is Chervet getting paid per round!? That was probably Sor Vorasingh's win for the year ... :'(

Bald Beavers vs Muckboys - Round 2

July 19, 2006
American Airlines Arena, Miami, FL
Merry Christmas Bald Beavers. The Beavers went to the swamp and killed the Muckboys. I hate to say it, but I was forced to draft a team for Romy while he was away. When he gets back, he'll probably be sorry that he had me pick for him. Anyway, the Beavers set some new team records for the UTBA:

Looks like lady luck was smiling on the Beavers tonight. Condolences to the Muck Boys, who look as though they couldn't buy a break.

Random thoughts:

The biggest surprise was possibly Peter Maher's two victories. Especially the one against Skelton.

I was nervous about my MW's match-ups against Paul Pender. He's a tough middle who will win many more than he loses is my guess.

I wouldn't be surprised if Edwin Rosario is flawless the rest of the way. Just bad luck in week one.

I was pleased to see Carlos Quintana atone for week one with two solid victories in round 2. Quintana was ahead in both of his first round contests when he was dispatched by his opponent. However, I did not expect both Quintana and Breland to beat Lewis this round.

My lightweights are holding their own, despite each being ranked a lowly 5. In week 1, they were 2-1-1 against superior foes - this week both Bummy and Lew each scratched out a win as well.
