Lets see my predictions for the tournament is A. Tank Abbott v Oleg Taktarov: Taktarov by decision B. Mark Coleman v Mario Sperry: Sperry by twisting C. Don Frye v Maurice Smith: Smith by decision D. Rickson Gracie v Ken Shamrock: Gracie by twisting A. Taktarov vs Sperry: Sperry by more twisting B: Gracie vs Smith: Gracie by twisting once again A: Gracie vs Sperry: Gracie by decision Of course, I'm rooting for either Frye or Smith to take the whole thing. I just don't think they will.

GFC1
The inaugral Global Fighting Championships [GFC] took place on the 31st March in Kansas City, Missouri. The Adams Mark Hotel hosted the event, and also housed the eight combatants, who arrived a few days before the event. The first fight was an unofficial one, when Royce Gracie and Tank Abbott came to blows in the hotel after Abbott insulted the Gracie family. It was quickly quelled, but it set the scene. It was a packed house at the venue, with people turning out in their droves to witness this new spectacle. It was billed as having no rules. That wasn't strictly true. There was to be no biting and no gouging. Also, their was to be no time limit. The brackets for the tournament had been released in advance, and were as follows; A. Tank Abbott v Oleg Taktarov B. Mark Coleman v Mario Sperry C. Don Frye v Mo Smith D. Rickson Gracie v Ken Shamrock A.Winner A v Winner B B. Winner C v Winner D Winner A v Winner B And so the event got underway. First up was Russian Oleg Taktarov, and the belligerent wildman, Tank Abbott.Taktarov was representing the art of Sambo, best described as Russian wrestling. Abbott claiimed to be representing Pit Fighting, which is basically street fighting. Taktarov learned Sambo while serving in the Russian armed forces. He obviously learned all about tanks as well, because he dealt with this one easily enough. After a bit of wild swinging by Abbott, Taktarov grabbed his opponent and threw him to the ground, where he proceded to apply a heel hook and forced Abbott to tap out after two minutes thirty seconds to advance to the next stage. The next match-up had American wrestler Mark Coleman go up against Brazilian Mario Sperry. Not a lot was known about the man from South of the border before the tournament, apart from the fact that he had the reputation of being excellent at what he did, and that is Brazilian Jiu-Jutsu. This one lasted six minutes and fifteen seconds, and again it was a heel hook that won the fight. Coleman slammed Sperry to the floor, winding him in the process. However, it didn't knock the fight out of Sperry, who went for a crossface armbar. When that failed, he went for a heel hook instead, and got it, forcing Coleman to tap out. Sperry advanced to the semi-final. It took Don 'The Predator' Frye 4.15 to advance to the semi-final. He was up against kickboxer Mo Smith. Smith started of by firing punches and kicks towards Frye, who stayed out of the way. However, when Frye grabbed hold of Smith, and took him down, Smith was like a duck out of water. It was obvious he knew very little about groundfighting, and procede to be submitted when Frye locked on an armbar. Rickson Gracie, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu player and recognised as the top fighter in the famous fighting family from Brazil, squared of against Ken Shamrock. The two men circled one another at the beginning, before Gracie threw a weak punch in the direction of Shamrock. Shamrock, who done some amatuer boxing as a youth, stepped back and then countered with one of his own. Gracies legs momentarily went and he pitched forward into Shamrock, who quickly took him down. Gracie, while on the ground, regained his senses and began to upkick towards Shamrock, who was circling him. Eventually, Shamrock dropped onto Gracie and attempted to take the mount position. Gracie's ground fighting skills were too good to let him get that. That weren't too good however to prevent Shamrock getting his ankle. He applied the ankle lock, and Gracie had to tap out at the 7.30 mark. The first round matches had come to a close. And so to the semi-final. The first semi-final match-up was between Oleg Taktarov and Mario Sperry, and boy, what a gruelling encounter it was. Both men are primarily ground-fighters, but this one stayed upright for a lot of it. Taktarov started of by throwing punches, Sperry threw the odd Muay Thai style kick. When it did eventually go down, you just knew it was going to stay there. Neither man had the advantage, and it looked like being a stalemate when, at the 26.19 mark, Sperry got a crossface armbar on Taktarov. Taktarov tapped out and Sperry advanced to the final, though you had to wonder how much this would have taken out of him. The other semi-final saw Don Frye make short work of Ken Shamrock, knocking him out at the 2.24 mark after landing a flurry of punches. And so it was to the final, to decide who was to be the first GFC champion. This was a brutal, gruelling affair, with both men on their feet for the whole.of the fight They were trading punches, kicks, and knees to the head, and after a while it became obvious that Frye was getting the worse of it. However, he's a tough son of a gun, and there was no quit in him. Finally, after Sperry had slipped a punch from Frye, he landed a pulverizing hook, followed to a series of knees to the head. Frye was out on his feet, and the referee stopped the fight after 31.31, to award the victory, and the right to be called GFC champion, to Mario Sperry. Mario Sperry may not have been known outside of Brazil before this event, but he sure is now...

I didn't realized that there was no time limits oops. Good stuff that was a heck of a tournament. I nailed the top half of the brackets dead on but missed the bottom half completely. Shamrock over Gracie is a huge upset especially as it came by sub. I could have seen Shamrock knocking out Rickson but not subbing him. Of course, he goes blows it by getting handle by Frye so easily.
Man, Sperry earned that title the hard way. Jeez, his semi-final and final match were epic. I'm looking forward to seeing how long he holds onto the belt. Also, we need Abbott/Royce to go down in the cage.

I'm enjoying this. I also (like the others here) like the way it runs in sync with your boxing uni. Very good work here.
I'm in the process of setting up a wrestling promotion to run along side my EMPIRE Boxing site so it's good to see that you're having success with this, it gives me hope! Keep up the good work, this is fun to follow. |

Thanks for the interest and comments guys. I'm glad you're enjoying it. I'm enjoying running this and it'll build momentum as it progresses. Will Sperry retain his title in GFC2? Who will the other fighters be? Are there any rival organisations on the horizon? Stay tuned.

Following the success of the inaugral Global Fighting Championship [GFC], event organiser Mitch Brown has stated that preparations are under way to stage a second event, probably in June. No venue has been mentioned yet, but it is beleived that they are trying to move it to a bigger fight city, such as New York or Las Vegas.
Brown had the following to say; "Mario Sperry has already agreed to compete, to defend his title. We're working on the other competitors at the minute. We're not sure whether we're going to stick with eight, or go with sixteen. We'll have to see." ----------------------------------------------------------------------- In other mixed martial arts [MMA] news, it is rumoured that an event along the lines, but indepent of, the GFC is being planned for Japan. Details are sketchy at the moment, but it is believed a shadowy 'Mr.Big' is funding it and wants it to not only rival the GFC, but to outdo it.

Sweet, can't wait to see who the new fighters in the GFC are going to be and who the WKC have stolen from them. I noticed a Mr. Rod Lord was last seen in Japan I wonder if he will have anything to do with the WKC.

BAS RUTTEN!!!! I know who I'll be rooting for in this thing but Arona is going to be a tough out. I've always thought that giving Arona a cage to stuff people against would make him one of the toughest fighters around to beat. Royce and Marcos should be fun times as well.
