Kazushi Sakuraba: A standout wrestler, Sakuraba carries the hopes of Japan on his shoulders. As much as I like Kimo, I think he is in over his head here.

Thanks for the predictions guys. Sorry for the delay in this, but I've been pretty busy as of late. I'm now about to sit down and begin playing out the tournaments. Write ups will follow soon.

GFC2
On June 2nd, GFC2 took place. Original the event was to be staged in New York, until the NYSAC realised what it entailed, an pulled the plug. All other state commissions followed suit, and the GFC2 looked to be doomed. Fortunately, due to the quick thinking of Romy Alvarez, best known for putting on extreme metal bands in the Florida area, the show went ahead. He came up with the great idea of staging the event in an old naval vessel, off the coastline of Florida, thus putting it out of the state commissions hands. Happy days. First Round Matches Reigning champion Mario Sperry was first up, against fellow Brazilian Jiu-Jitsuist Ricardo Arona. This match was expected to go to the ground very quickly. It didn't. In fact, for most of the forty-two minutes that it lasted, these two guys stayed on their feet, perhaps knowing and respecting each others ground game too much. When it did finally go to the ground Arona was in control and finally got the submission at 42.27 with a leg-lock. The hunt was on for a new champion. GFC1 runner-up, Don 'The Predator' Frye was next up against Tank Abbott who dissappointed in the first event and was looking to do better. However, he came in out of shape, and came throwing wild swings which 'The Predator' avoided, before taking Abbott down. Kudos to Abbott, he hung in tough for the twenty one minutes it lasted, before being rescued by referee 'Big' John McCarthy when he was punched into unconsiousness whilst trapped on the ground. Royce Gracie, younger brother of Rickson, scored a quick armbar submission over 'The Flying Dutchman' Bas Rutten. Rutten was took down almost immediately, and was out of his depth. Gracie gained the mount position, and after a few submission attempts, finally secured the victory. Marco Ruas, a tough guy from the slums of Brazil, was just too much for 'The Little Dragon' Bruce Lee, who has unbeleivable speed, but was just too slight for Ruas. Lee attempted a spinning back kick, which missed its mark, and Ruas pounced on him. landing some heavy blows before taking Lee down to the ground, where he later admitted is an area he needs to work on. Ruas gained the enviable mount position, and proceded to punch his Lee into unconsiosness, when McCarthy stopped the fight. Lee's left eyebrow was also sliced open. Semi-Finals Brazilians Ricardo Arona and Marco Ruas fought a gruelling affair. Most of the match was fought on their feet, then with both men on the brink of totla exhaustion, it went to the crowd. Ruas, after numerous submission attempts, gained the mount position, and proceded to knock Arona unconsiouss three minutes shy of the hour mark in what had become a recurrent, unsettling theme throughout the night. Arona also suffered a nasty gash to his head. The other semi-final was just as gruelling, between Don 'The Predator' Frye and Royce Gracie. Frye immediatelt took Gracie down, and had the better of it on the ground in the first part of the fight. Then Gracie started to get into the swing, and attempted a couple of submissions. Frye has never submitted in MMA or wrestling. The fight carried on, mainly on the ground but sometimes on their feet, and went past the one hour mark. Gracie got the win at seventy six minutes when he got Frye in a triangle choke. Frye refused to quit, and instead slipped into unconsiosness. The Final As had been concurrent throughout the night, this match, between Brazilians Marco Ruas and Royce Gracie, lasted nearly an hour. A lot of excellent groundwork from both men, and also a lot of action in the up position. Finally, Ruas got the win, and the GFC2 championship, at the fifty-seven minutes mark when Gracie, due to exhaustion, passed out. The fight was stopped, and the self-proclaimed 'King Of The Streets' declared the victor. The crowd seemed to have enjoyed themselves, but felt a lot of the fights lasted too long and that maybe for the next event a time limit should be set. GFC spokesman Mitch Brown said he will consider it, along with some other rule changes which have been put forward. He claimed he wants to take the GFC forward, and bring it to the masses. Watch this space! |

![]() That Alvarez fellow sounds like one smart cat. Wow, that show was epic. It exhausted me just reading how long those fights lasted. I'm shocked that Arona decided to be a kickboxer for this event. I'm sadden and suprised that Bas got smoked like that, I figured he would have put up a better fight. Hell of a win for Macro Ruas to beat Arona and Gracie in back to back fights that lasted almost an hour is a damn impressive feat. I'm thinking that some time limits might not be a bad idea. Now lets see if the WKC show can live up to this one.

On June 30th, in Tokyo, Japan, the inaugaral World Kumite Championship [WKC] took place. Venue was the Tokyo dome.
Prior to the event, following the recent GFC2, in whic the length of some of the matches became a bug-bear, a thirty minute time limit was introduced. Should the match go the full duration, three judges would decide the winner. Another difference to GFC event would be that the fights in this tournament would take place in a ring, not an octagon. GFC cemi-finalist, Russian Oleg Taktarov met Englands James 'The Collossus' Thompson in the opening match. Taktarov got of to a good start, taking his foe to the ground, but as the match progressed, the sheer size and power of Thompson became a factor. Thompson regained his feet and began to punish 'The Russian Bear', before taking Taktarov down and punching him unconsciouss at the twenty-four minutes mark to advance to the semi-final. Another GFC semi-finalist, Ken Shamrock was next up. In the opposite corner was Kazushi Sakuraba, who was carrying Japan's hopes on his shoulders. He got of to a fast start, taking Shamrock down, and quickly gainin mount, where he done some ground and pound. However, Shamrock managed to escape to guard, where he done some damage of his own with strikes to the face. Sakuraba finally managed to escape to his feete, and after taking a big punch to the face, attempted to take Shamrock down to the ground again. However, Shamrock was quick and managed to apply a standing guillotine, which forced Sakuraba to tap out at the fifteen minute mark. Ken Shamrock's younger, adopted brother, Frank, was next in the ring. He squared of against American collegiate wrestler Mark Kerr, who dwarfed him. The weight difference was a big factor, with Kerr taking Shamrock down early on, and basically rained blows down on his foe for the twenty-six minutes it lasted, before the bout was terminated due to Shamrock losing consciuossness. This one wasn't pretty to watch. The last first round match-up between Dan Severn and Kimo went the distance. Severn was awarded the victory due to the fact that he dominated, mainly on the ground. Onto the semi-finals. ____________________________ The first semi-final between James Thompson and Dan Severn only lasted six minutes. Thompson dominated throughout, having Severn in the mount position when Severn, wily fighter that he is, managed to escape and quickly apply a rear naked choke for the victory and a place in the final. The other semi-final saw Ken Shamrock square of against Mark Kerr, with Shamrock vowing to avenge his brothers defeat. This he did, by being in control, on the ground, for most of the fight. Kerr showed some excellent grappling skills, but he also showed that his fitness was severely lacking. This saw his undoing when, with one minute remaining, he passed out through sheer exhaustion. ______________________________ The much anticipated final between Ken Shamrock and Dan Severn began with Shamrock attempting to get a kneebar submission hold on Dan Severn. This failed and Severn quickly took his opponent down into the guard posistion. Severn went for the mount a couple of times, but kept failing, so he decided to seriously rough Shamrock up, before Ken managed to sweep into the guard offense position. Shamrock began to pound on Severn before, allof a sudden applying a heel hook which forced Severn to tap out at the sixteen minute mark. Ken Shamrock raised his arms to the sky, as it dawned on him he was the first ever World Kumite Champion. |

Great tournament. Shamrock is a worthy winner. The biggest surprise imo was that Thomson performed this good against some pretty stiff competition.

Heck of a run by Ken to win the tournament. He also got his virtual revenge for his real life lost to Saku. Like Tommy, I'm shocked that Thompson did so well. I figured that he would get taken out in the first round without too much problems but heck of a job by him.
