New York - Jimmy Johnston declared today that he and other promoters would continue with his heavyweight elimination tournament to crown a new world champion. "Everyone knows that America has the best boxers on the planet and the championship belongs in this country. The New York State Boxing Commission has said they will recognize the winner of our tournament as the real champ, and Michigan, Illinois and Pennsylvania are prepared to follow their lead. Already, Joe Louis, Al Bray, Turkey Thompson, Bob Pastor and others have signed on, and matches will be made and posted in the press."

Wink The League of Unusual Gentlemen

Halifax - It has come to the attention of the Chronicle's sports department that a couple of ivy-league pantywaists out of Princeton or Yale, burdened with too much money and too little sense, attempted some weeks ago to form a professional boxing league along the lines of team games such as polo and darts. The addled-pated collegians spent mountains of cash trying to attract top-level fighters to their six-team league, boxers willing to "play" a regular slate of weekly bouts. Much to their chagrin, and the hilarity of the real sports in town, they ended up with a handful of amateurs, failed pros and tavern brawlers and the entire enterprise collapsed before the first round of "games could be played". Perhaps their fathers should have told them that boxers don't play.

Excerpt from the Coaltown Gazette.....Rumours are that Detroit's exciting young heavyweight contender Joe Louis will be matched with Tut Jackson as part of Jimmy Johnston's heavyweight elimination tournamnet. Jackson, who had a rocky start to his career, has won ten straight under new management...

Brown Bomber Demolishes Jackson

Detroit - Young Joe Louis came to prove that he is the leading contender for any heavyweight title honours when he met the dangerous Ohio knockout artist James "Tut" Jackson here last night. On paper it looked like a tough proposition, but Louis didn't bother to read that paper as he took all of a minute and a half to totally dismantle the long-armed slugger from the buckeye state. Jackson may have landed all of three punches before Joe went to work. A couple of trip-hammer jabs, a left hook and two thundering right hands were all it took to cut Jackson down. He rose at six and took another right behind the ear that finished the job. Many in the crowd missed the spectacular demolition because they had turned their heads or moved to let another pass.

Excerpt from the London Mirror....In Madrid yesterday, Spanish police acting on a tip from an informer, raided several homes and arrested 13 suspected members of the notorious Black Circle. A police source said that one of the detainees was found to have a newspaper photo of the late world boxing champion Phil Scott folded in his wallet. The same man was also found to have evidence on him leading police to believe he had recently been to America.

Excerpt from the Cincinnati Examiner...and last night at Boyd's Park, Al "Big Boy" Bray won a one-sided decision over Meyer "KO" Christner, knocking him down 5 times over 12 rounds...the outdoors Al Gainer-Jack Gross fight in Akron was post-poned due to rain...

I'm really enjoying these little snapshots of your universe, Cap. Especially the one above, which was very amusing. I think it's pretty clear that Joe is going to kill everyone on his way to the Championship, although I'm still looking forward to hearing about it. It'll be interesting to see what happens once the tournament is over and in which direction you go.

I was just wondering what year your universe is set in, as there aren't any dates on the posts in thsi thread or in "Cap's Journal".

I guess right now it's probably in the late 1930s. I'm not following a strict historical timeline though.

Excerpt from the Akron Beagle....seems there was a boxing contest on at Memorial Field last night. Dusky fellow named Al Gainer was awarded a technical knockout after 5 rounds over a pugilist called Jack Gross...Lawn bowling tournament drew over 200 enthusiastic observers to Fred Grimley's lawn yesterday afternoon...

Excerpt from the LA Chronicle...and last evening in Burlingame, a Turkey named Thompson avoided the toothless Tiger Jack Fox cleverly enough to eke out a majority decision over 8 listless rounds in front of only four or five hundred paying customers. Referee Frank Fullam urged them to try harder, but to no avail. Most of those in press row who were still awake agreed with the decision.

Excerpt from the Coaltown Courier...Notorious international spy and interior decorator Lars Firrlman was picked up by the local constabulary this morning for shooting a bear in his pajamas. No explanation yet as to how the bear got hold of his pajamas....In a related story Firrlman's brother Alice was sentenced to 5 years in Leavenworth and 11 years at Woolworth for multiple acts of egregious plagiarism.

Giants Battle in Frisco

San Francisco - Refere Herb Goldstein looked like a midget in the ring last night as he worked the Abe Simon-Harry Bobo 8 rounder at the Sailors Memorial Arena. The two huge brawlers dwarfed the veteran ringmaster as they battled hammer and tong before a loudly appreciative crowd. Pre-fight hype had it that the two behemoths had exchanged heated words laced with obscenities in the parking lot and were practically clawing the walls to get in the first punch, so the mob was ready for blood.

Simon obliged the fans by dropping Bobo in round one with a bomb-like right to the head that opened an old cut under his eye. From that point on, Goldstein did his best to get out of their way.

Round two went to Bobo as he slammed rights and lefts to Simon's gut, driving him across the canvas floor, several times forcing him onto the ropes where he worked him to the head. In round three Simon counter-attacked behind a decent jab, landing thudding shots to Bobo's ribs and face. So it see-sawed back and forth until the sixth, when big Abe tagged Bobo with a Hail-Mary overhand right that buckled the giant Pittsburgh pugilist's knees. A second big shot that may have wandered down Mexico way took the wind out of Bobo's sail, and he clinched like death itself.

In the seventh, they exchanged some heavy leather at ring centre, but Simon was clearly the fresher man. With seconds left, he punched through Bobo's faltering defence and had him hanging on open-mouthed at the gong.

At the start of the final round, Bobo rose to his full 6' 4" and waved Simon in. They crashed together like enraged water buffaloes, trading explosive jolts until a short hook by Simon staggered Bobo, forcing him into a shell. For the last minute of the fight, Simon strove to deliver a knockout, landing on arms, shoulders and elbows until the bell. Minutes later, a weary referee Goldstein struggled to raise Abe Simon's soggy-gloved fist as announcer Joe Morton declared him the winner by unanimous and popular decision.

It's funny. Every so often I introduce a fictional fighter created randomly into the mix just for fun. I watch him work his way through the lesser ranks, maybe even up to World Class. Then I start to get antsy about him. I can't bring myself to allow him to beat real top-class fighters. So I open him up and tinker with his ratings to downgrade him. Next thing you know he's on the decline into oblivion.

I read other universes here, and every time I see how some fictional fighter has beaten a name I recognize, I wince. Must be the amateur historian in me. This is nothing against others here. I'm glad they're having fun. After all, these aren't real humans we're dealing with, just electronic blips on a screen and our own fertile imaginations. For me, it was different in the early days, when I had far fewer historical fighters in my universe. I didn't mind that my fictional British heavyweight Lloyd King made it so far, because I had so few real British heavies from that era to use. Now, I've got more of them, so I may retire King "poimenently". Not sure. Of course, then I have the problem of what to do with Colin Morrison, my fictional Scottish heavyweight. I have a policy of not using a real fighter unless I have a photo of him, so even if I find a heavy to replace him, if I can't find that guy's pic, I won't use him.

Oh, well. The problems of power, eh?

Jersey Night Stick Thumps Hunt

New Jersey - A revitalized Tony Galento needed just 3 rounds to break down Babe Hunt at Jersey City yesterday and advance in Jimmy Johnston's Heavyweight Tournament. From the opening bell, Galento took his attack to Hunt's body with brutal effectiveness. The lanky Oklahoman tried to use his jab to blunt the Jersey Night Stick, but had no defence for Tony's vicious left hooks inside.

In the fatal third round, Galento bulled Hunt onto the ropes, then landed five unanswered left and rights. Hunt buckled and tried to clinch, before a huge roundhouse right brushed past his guard and crashed against his jaw, twisting his head around grotesquely. There was a low moan from the audience, and Hunt folded like a matchstick man at Galento's feet. Referee Fred Silver's arm beat out the ten count and that was it.

Excerpt from the Montreal Star...It was a thrilling scrap at the Garden in New York last night when highly touted heavyweight contender Jimmy Bivins met tough-as-nails Gus Dorazio in the main event. The two men battled every minute of the scheduled ten rounds, trading heavy blows with neither scoring a knockdown. In the end it was left to the referee and two judges to decide. Referee Arthur Donovan saw it for Bivins and judge Al Smith had it narrowly for Dorazio. The final word went to judge Nat Fleischer who scored it 97-93 for the winner Jimmy Bivins.

Hey Cap, I was just wondering how many real heavyweight fighters you have in your personal database? I noticed that you said that you dont like to use a real fighter unless you had a picture of him, so I am just wondering how many photos compared to fighters you have on file? Also, are there any specific places that you found other files besides in this forum or have you just created a bunch of files on your own? Right now I have about 3500 heavyweight/cw fighters. I wanted to know how this compares to all the other regular posters in the forum. Thanks.
