News of the Ring
Over the last few days, several well-known fighters have announced their retirement, including, Jack Gagnon, Walter Cobb, Billy Miske and Jack Delaney. Many observers think that the presence of Joe Louis on the scene may have something to do with it.
New guys battling their way up: Tommy Farr (7-0), Mickey Walker (10-0-1), Tomas Gomez (10-1-0), Arturo Godoy (10-1-1) alongwith a crowd of pork & beaners. The EBU is starting to put pressure on Max Schmeling to defend his title or at least begin negotiations with a future opponent. Frenchman Andre Lenglet is the Number 1 contender at the moment, followed by Luigi Musina and Walter Neusel. Schmeling's people are angling for a crack at World title holder Phil Scott, and may just end up vacating the European championship. In a wire from their London headquarters, the British Empire Boxing Commission has agreed to allow Angus Snyder time to recover from a hand injury, but expect him to sign contracts soon to meet either Tiger Warrington or Tom Heeney in defence of his Empire championship belt. (Note. A lucrative contract to meet Tom Heeney was signed that very afternoon, with Snyder sporting a small plaster on the knuckles of his right hand.) Last edited by Cap : 02-25-2007 at 09:16 AM. |

Farr is presently an undercard fighter. I think that by the time he is ready to challenge for the EBU title, Schmeling will be long gone. Walter Neusel looks like a future European champion. Of the top three EBU contenders, if Schmeling fights one, the other two will likely be matched in an eliminator for the next shot.

New Zealand's Tom Heeney, following on his unsuccessful bid today for the Empire title held by Angus Snyder, has announced his retirement from the ring. The popular Hard Rock from Down Under leaves the game with a laudable record, a tidy nest-egg and a very happy wife.
The Jersey Night-stick, Tony Galento, managed a sloppy win in his hometown last night over light-heavyweight Battling Siki. Desperately needing a win to salvage his fading career, Galento survived a knockdown in the first round to snatch a narrow points win over the talented Senegalese. Big George Godfrey is likely finished as a viable contender off his stunning loss yesterday in Minneapolis to KO Christner. The end came in the 5th round when Godfrey picked himself off the canvas and was pummeled into submission on the ropes by the hard-punching Christner. This loss follows on the heels of the hammering he took from rising star Jersey Joe Walcott. It seems more and more likely that Max Schmeling will abandon the EBU title as it seems he will be challenging for Phil Scott's World championship very soon. The European Boxing Union, meeting in Berlin, has ordered him to defend against one of the top three contenders before the end of next month. Meanwhile, Detroit's Joe Louis sits on the sidelines waiting for someone in the top ten to sign contracts to fight him. Last edited by Cap : 02-25-2007 at 09:06 AM. |

Halifax - There is a rumour circulating in boxing circles here that a major figure in the sport has died suddenly. Calls to the press have only resulted in anxious questions from bewildered reporters. No one knows how or where the rumour started and hard facts are impossible to come by. |

Halifax - A phone call from Joe O'Herlihy on assignment in New York has confirmed that an unidentified male was taken from a room at the Stittler Hotel just down the street from Madison Square Garden. It is not known whether the man was still alive at the time. Rumours are running rampant as to his identity.

Halifax - Nothing on the wireless yet and storms raging along the coast have made telephone and telegraph communication intermittent. Last word from Joe O'Herlihy, on assignment from the Chronicle Herald was that a young white male had been taken by ambulance to Sisters of Mercy hospital. The Chronicle has elected to send down noted local private investigator Vic Langille to assist O'Herlihy with the story. A source close to the paper revealed that Mr. Langille had been contacted in Montreal by the Chronicle's sister paper the Star and given a hefty retainer for his services as well as a first class ticket to New York. Langille, a former member of the Halifax Constabulary and ex-pugilist, is a notorious hardcase and no stranger to the sort of people O'Herlihy may run up against. All of which has led many to speculate that the mystery man may be a Canadian, perhaps Angus Snyder or Terrence "Tiger" Warrington.

Halifax - It has been confirmed by our sources in New York that a young white male was found dead in a room at the Stittler Hotel in Manhattan. The police are unwilling to release the name of the dead man pending notification of next of kin. Reporter Joe O'Herlihy writes that another man was taken from the same hotel at approximately the same time and rushed to hospital. It is now believed this was an unrelated incident. Detective Vic Langille reports that a 9mm German luger was found close to the dead man, but police are otherwise being unusually tight-lipped about the case.

Halifax - Weather continues to hamper direct communication from New York, but our investigators Langille and O'Herlihy have uncovered one more tantalizing clue. The dead man taken from that Manhattan hotel was a foreign national. So now overseas calls are being placed with contacts in Britain, Europe and Australia to find out if anything is known there. All major Canadian figures in the sport have been eliminated as possibilities in the last 24 hours.

Canadian Journalist Assaulted
Halifax - News has arrived that sports and crime reporter Joe O'Herlihy of the Halifax Chronicle was taken to the emergency at Sisters of Mercy Hospital just hours ago as a result of a brutal assault outside a Manhattan eatery. According to an eyewitness, he and private investigator Vic Langille were jumped by three men as they emerged from a popular New York steakhouse. Details are hard to come by, but it is believed that, in our local parlance, Vic put the boots to the three jobbies in a square go after O'Herlihy was struck down. |

World Champion Dead Halifax - A wire arrived on this desk today from our agent in New York City detective Vic Langille. He reports that a police source has given him the name of the dead man found at the Stittler Hotel last week. The name was first discovered on the hotel registry as a P. Stuffling. Further investigation has led Langille to conclude that it was none other than world heavyweight champion Phil Scott who was found shot to death in his hotel room. According to Langille, the police are on the verge of declaring it a suicide. This, in spite of the fact that friends have told our detective that Scott disliked firearms and would not have carried one. Last edited by Cap : 03-07-2007 at 07:51 AM. |
