B-town Boxing: A Heavyweight Universe

B-town Boxing - A Heavyweight Universe

I have been inspired to try to write the happenings in my heavyweight universe after reading all of the great action from my fellow forum members. I know that it will not be as good or sophisticated as most of the other threads here, but I will try to do my best.

History

Current date: Late 1953, approaching the new year.
Start date: January 1950

All heavyweight boxers started fighting in a designated local region for the first 2 years. I used the auto- scheduler to arrange fights but did not adjust for ratings or records to pad stats. Every fighter started out on an even field and had to fight whoever was put in front of them by the computer. I called this the Unbiased HW Universe. As fighters compiled records, they traveled outside their local areas to fight other boxers. Year one introduced the competition for sectional titles. Regional titles were introduced at the beginning of year two. World titles were sanctioned in the middle of year two as more fighters gained experience and appeared in the World Rankings. Fights are determined by the auto-scheduler with a few exceptions. I like to arrange simulations of historical fights such as Tunney/Dempsey, Moore/Marciano, Tyson/Holyfield, Ali/Frazier, etc. The computer selects all strategies for both fighters. I never interfere during any fight and I do not manipulate the outcome. (Although I still cuss and swear when one of my favorites loses, especially from a DQ or to cuts!)

Titles

Sub-Regional Titles:

EBU: European Boxing Union - governs all boxers from Europe, United Kingdom, Eastern Bloc.
ICBA: Inter-Continental Boxing Association - governs all boxers from the countries of Africa, Middle East, Asia, Pacific Rim and Oceania.
USBA: United States Boxing Association - governs all boxers from the 50 states.
CABO: Continental Americas Boxing Association - governs all boxers from the countries in the Western Hemisphere excluding the United States. Countries include Canada, Mexico, Central America, South America, Caribbean Islands, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Regional Titles:

EHBA: Eastern Hemisphere Boxing Association - governs all boxers from all countries in the Eastern Hemisphere of the world.
WHBA: Western Hemisphere Boxing Association - governs all boxers from all countries in the Western Hemisphere of the world.

World Titles:

IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO.

* I am like everybody else and hate all the alphabet titles in real life. But since I have a heavyweight universe with over 3500 boxers, I feel it is necessary to have more pieces of the pie to fight for otherwise the line for a title shot will be way to long!

Title Fights

All title fights are determined by the random number generator. Each organization is assigned a number from 1-10. If that number pops up, there is a required fight. A unification bout is required when duplicates of individual numbers show up.

Number One Ranked Contender

The champion will fight the number one contender within a specific time frame determined by each organization. The number one contender must have a 75% winning record, must not have lost his last fight, cannot have fought for the title previously (unless a rematch is deemed necessary due to circumstances such as losing on cuts or resulting draw). If the ranked number one contender fails to meet these requirements, the next ranked fighter is deemed the number one opponent. All other championship contenders must be ranked in the top 15. *Normally I would say top 10, but there are 4 World Champions that are included in the top 10 already which would only leave 6 ranked fighters to choose from.

Fighters

Only heavyweights in this universe. All cruiserweights have been moved up. Light-heavyweights that fought in the HW division are included. There are over 3500 fighters. All fighters are in their prime. I know this will be one point of contention with a lot of historians, but it is too much work and I am interested in the results of fighters competing against each other at their best. Another point of contention will be my use of fictional and adjusted fighters.

My Fictional HW’s: I have created 55 of my own heavyweights. These are fighters that I have had since I started playing the Lance Haffner sim in the early to mid 80’s. Sorry to all, but I am quite fond of these big guys! Not all of these fighters will be included but I will make sure to give a brief description when they appear.

Adjusted Non-Fictional HW’s: These are real fighters from other divisions that have been weight-class altered to fill in some regional areas that are lagging with real heavyweights. These fighters are more from my time period. Some are good fighters and some will be just average. You will recognize the names such as Pernell Whitaker, Felix Trinidad, Manny Pacquiao, Joe Calzaghe. I know a lot of people like to use fictional fighters more as TC’s, but I figured why not use real fighters. I also know a lot of historians will not like this because it will influence the outcomes too much due to the highly ranked inclusion of these fighters. I know, I know, but what the heck, I figure Pernell will be just like a Jack Johnson type of fighter.

Rocky Fictional HW’s: Included are Rocky, Apollo Creed, Ivan Drago, Clubber Lang, Tommy Gunn.

Game Choices

Referee: Will be chosen at random.
Judges: Will be chosen at random.
Venue: Will be chosen at random.
Bias: Bias is on, champion bias chosen.
Monthly Fights: Auto-scheduler is used with approximately 25% of the fighters in each region active.

In-Fight Rules

Unified rules apply for all fights.
All fights are 15 rounds in length. * I believe that you must take pride in your profession and a fighter should be rewarded for being well conditioned. Shortened fights don’t allow for a fatigue factor to come into play. There will also be a higher percentage of KO’s/TKO’s reflected in a fighters record because of the longer opportunity to end the fight before the end of the 15th round.
No mandatory standing 8 count.
No three knockdown rule.
Only the referee can stop the fight.
Cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
Three judges for all fights.
Technical Draw through 4/Scorecard after 4.
10 point must system.

Finally

Thanks to all the forum members who chose to create and share their files with all of us. I have downloaded as many files that I could find and have also stolen a lot of ideas from other’s universes. Please feel free to ask me about your favorite heavyweights and I will gladly inform you of how they are doing in this universe.

Looks interesting. The inclusion of some fictional guys and adjusted fighters from other weight classes gives it a twist and makes it more unique.

Thanks...I was wondering what some of the regulars down here in the basement might think about the use of some fictional and adjusted fighters. Hope it doesnt turn too many hardcore/historical pugilists off? It still seems as though the better fighters have risen to the top even though a fighters ranking can freefall with a loss to a scrub or upset because of the percentage points. Thats an issue that I am having with using so many fighters at one time. I can see why so many other universe owners use a smaller group and add/retire as they go along. I guess I will have to keep experimenting since this is my first try at doing a public universe. Thanks to everyone for posting their fight simulations, rules and formats. I have been doing a lot of reading and have been stealing ideas from different threads. Was wondering if anybody else has heavyweight files that they wouldnt mind sharing? I noticed that the Louisville thread (incredible how long you have kept going in your universe!) is a HW uni and has a lot of fighters that I havent been able to find. The cornerworks thread said that your Louisville files were posted on their site, but I cant seem to find them anywhere.

We need your support!

Fighting Phoenix Organization

We are a Non-Profit Organization that takes pride in supporting those fighters that rise from the ashes to inspire the masses. Not much has been expected of these fighters because they come from relatively unknown backgrounds and train in small gyms without any fanfare or limelight. The Fighting Phoenix raises funds to lobby fighting commissions, governing bodies, presidents and all alphabet committee members to give our fighters a chance at title bouts and bigger paydays.

Currently supporting:

Ansell Baba Adams (Trinidad & Tobago) 13-4-0 (10) - A relatively unknown fighter (rated 1) ranked 5th in CABO and 103rd in the World Rankings. We are lobbying for Adams to receive a title shot versus Cuba’s Teofilo Stevenson, the reigning CABO champion.

Marty Marshall (USA) 8-3-0 (5) (rated 2) - Ranked 85th in World Rankings and 63rd in USBA.
Monte Masters (USA) 13-3-0 (12) (rated 2) - Ranked 126th in World Rankings and 87th in USBA.
Henk De Best (Netherlands) 14-0-0 (12) (rated 2) - Ranked 176th in World and 45th in EBU.
Lou Strydom (South Africa) 9-3-0 (6) (rated 1) - Ranked 193rd in World and 14th in ICBA.

Breaking News!

From the AP Newswire

New York - Heavyweight boxer Tommy “The Duke” Morrison reportedly punches an up and coming fighting prospect named Tommy “The Machine” Gunn in altercation on the street. Reports say Gunn was following Morrison while Morrison was doing some late night clothing shoping in the Garment District after leaving a nightclub. An interview of witness and friend of Gunn’s, Mitch Green, says “Morrison just came out of the store and punched Gunn in the eye. Morrison’s lawyer states, “Gunn provoked my client with profanity and continuous uncalled for taunting. He followed and stalked Morrison for close to 30 minutes.”

A spokesperson for Gunn says that Gunn was an innocent bystander and is suffering mental and physical distress. Gunn, however, says that he will forego litigation if Morrison grants a fight to Gunn with a 50-50 split in revenue.

Brian Kenny reports:

Fighter Arrested in Australia

B-town Boxing Promotions announces the cancellation of “Thunder Down Under” fight card after undisclosed fighter is allegedly arrested with several vials of HGH, Human Growth Hormone. Reports say that fighter professes to be clean and testing will prove my innocence. However, he says that he may have ingested some meats that contained this hormone, used on livestock, from a Meat Warehouse that he frequents in his hometown of Philadelphia, PA. The two media driven fights between Rocky Balboa vs. Clubber Lang, and Ivan Drago vs. Apollo Creed seem to be in danger of never realizing their fanatical potential.

Upcoming Bouts

September Update

Title Fights

IBF - Champion Rocky Marciano, USA, 19-2-0 (19) vs. #10 Gene Tunney, USA, 16-2-0 (9)
The Brockton Blockbuster, Rocky Marciano will defend his title against the IBF #1 ranked contender Gene “The Fighting Marine” Tunney. Marciano will be trying to avenge one of his only two losses to Tunney, who won a 15-round unanimous decision in 1952.

WBC - Champion “Iron” Mike Tyson, USA, 16-1-1 (15) vs. #5 James Jeffries, USA, 17-3-0 (15)
Many fans and experts were worried that “Iron” Mike would run into trouble because of the illness to long-time trainer and mentor Cus D’Amato. D’Amato provides stability, a sense of order and security to a talented youngster with a troubled background. Tyson has been seen with numerous women and has been reportedly staying out late enjoying the nightclub scene. Fortunately for Tyson, D’Amato returned from the hospital and straightened Tyson out, which has allowed the champ to refocus and train for the tough bout with the hard-hitting James “The Boilermaker” Jeffries. This will be Jeffries 2nd attempt at a world title.

EBU - Champion Vitali Klitschko, Ukraine, 14-2-0 (13) vs. #16 Max Schmeling, Germany, 20-4-1 (18)
Schmeling is the #1 ranked contender in the EBU. Klitschko has been inactive for six months since losing his opportunity at a world title vs. WBA Champion Chuck “No Doubt” Norton in March.

Thanks

Thanks Tommy and mh2365. Unfortunately, Balboa is the fighter being linked to the HGH scandal in Australia, so he may be inactive until the investigation is resolved. Marciano's handlers dont consider Balboa a legitimate contender at this time but if the "Italian Stallion" can move up in the rankings, it is a possibility. Both the Marciano and Balboa's camps realize the huge marketing possibilities and word is that both fighters have been offered acting parts in the Soprano's future big-screen movie!

What A Fight!

A Tremendous Comeback and Dramatic End.

#31 George Chuvalo 13-2-1 (13) vs. #37 Ken Norton 13-3-1 (10)

Most fans anticipate a short fight filled with numerous power punches and nobody is disappointed in the beginning round. Both fighters try to end the fight right away and the crowd goes wild. Rounds 2-4 continues on a fast and furious pace as both fighters throw heavy amounts of leather. No jabs here! Norton is throwing a greater volume of punches but Chuvalo is landed a higher amount and the quality of his power punches seems to be slowing Norton down. Norton seems to respond by taking the next two rounds, winning the 6th convincingly while hurting Chuvalo to the body. Looks like a pretty even fight so far. Norton lands a big body shot and Chuvalo goes to the canvas at with 2:13 remaining in the 8th round. Chuvalo gets up at the count of three but takes a tremendous amount of punishment, without response, to end the round. Norton seems to be controlling the fight after the big 8th round. Both fighters are starting to fatigue but it looks like Norton is ahead entering the 12th. Chuvalo’s eye seem to be closing and he seems inspired to try to finish the fight before the doctor steps in. Norton has a point deducted here in the 14th for holding and pushing down Chuvalo’s neck. The point deduction comes after two previous warnings. The bell for final round sounds and Norton seems to be ahead, even with the point deduction. But, OH! Norton goes down from a vicious cross with 2:41 left in the round. Norton barely gets up at the count of 9! Chuvalo lands a combination to the head and body and Norton goes down for the 2nd time with over two minutes still remaining. Norton is unable to get up and Chuvalo wins by (KO15) in the last round with 1:58 remaining. Norton was ahead on all 3 cards at the time of the KO. 132-131, 133-132, 134-129. Norton’s trainer is already demanding a rematch but it hardly seems likely at this time.

September results

#99 Bob Fitzsimmons 14-1-0 (14) vs. #132 Andrew Golota 13-0-0 (13)

Golota gets knocked down 39 seconds into the 2nd round by a right uppercut and the undefeated record and show of promise and potential tumble with him. Fitzsimmons wins (KO2).

#26 Dick Matthews 16-1-0 (15) vs. #35 Bruce Woodcock 14-2-0 (14)

Woodcock lands a devastating hook 30 seconds into the 1st round and Matthews crumbles to the floor. Matthews goes down a second time but gets back up and manages to finish the round. Matthews is clearly still shaken heading into the 2nd round and Woodcock continues to throw flurries of punches. Matthews has already developed swelling under the left eye. Woodcock lands several unanswered punches and the referee finally steps in to save Matthews from further punishment. Woodcock wins (TKO3) at the 2:42 mark. It seems to be a good month for the United Kingdom fighters.

#17 Joe Frazier 17-3-0 (17) vs. #43 Emmett Rocco 12-3-0 (7)

Frazier takes two of the first three rounds as most experts see this as merely an overblown sparring session for Frazier. Frazier swarms his opponent and Rocco doesn’t seem to have the ability nor the power to fend off Smokin’ Joe. Frazier lands everything he throws and Rocco seems to be taking a lot of unnecessary punishment. Frazier wins by (TKO8) when the referee mercifully stops the fight due to a closed right eye. The eye was really a good excuse, but in reality, the fight could have easily been stopped in every round after the third. Glad we got in free with our reporter’s pass and didn’t have to pay for this one!

#44 James J. Corbett 11-0-0 (4) vs. #11 Mustafa Couzee 20-3-0 (20)

Corbett outpoints and outboxes Couzee for the first two rounds. The referee calls a disputed intentional head butt on Corbett to start off the 3rd. Couzee is now bleeding after a punch or was it a delayed reaction to the head butt. Either way, Corbett is ahead after winning all three rounds. The crown at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas finally starts to cheer as “Killer” Couzee finally resembles his moniker and wins his first round. Couzee takes the next two rounds but his corner is pressing him to be more aggressive so that he can knock Corbett out. Couzee’s corner is worried that the bout may be prematurely stopped because they are having a problem with the cut over Mustafa’s eye. Couzee’s corner has shown to be correct as the physician has taken a look at the eye. The fight continues here in the 10th but Couzee is fading and Corbett is wisely jabbing at the cut. Corbett’s face and eyes are showing bad signs of swelling resulting from the tremendous power punches absorbed through these ten rounds. In what can be considered one of the biggest upsets to date, Corbett wins by (TKO11) as the referee stops the fight due to the severity of Couzee’s cuts. Corbett lead all cards at the time of the stoppage - 97-93, 96-95, 96-94. While many consider this to be a huge upset, this reporter believes that the better boxer won. Couzee is a hard-hitting knockout artist that has not been tested. His competition has been limited since he started his career in the ICBA, a region with very few, true elite fighters. Just look at the first time he stepped up to a legitimate fighter in the states, he got destroyed in the first round of the WBA title fight to Chuck Norton. Corbett is a better technician and proved that point tonight, by outboxing and outclassing his opponent.

#28 Harry Wills 11-0-0 (10) vs. #47 Lance Whitaker 10-2-1 (8)

Wills knocked Whitaker goofy all night long, winning the fight by (TKO8).

#66 Bob Armstrong 12-1-0 (11) vs. #111 Oliver McCall 15-1-0 (14)

Both boxers trade punches the first round with McCall landing at a better rate. McCall knocks down Armstrong with 0:3 seconds left in the second but already lost a point due to low blows. The flash knockdown doesn’t affect Armstrong as he take a close 3rd. McCall lands a hook to start the fifth and Armstrong goes down for the second time in the fight. After seven, McCall seems to be leading this fight by a large margin but it seems that he hurt his and during the last round. Well, it must not of hurt too bad because “The Atomic Dog” land a huge hook and sends Armstrong down for the 3rd and final time. Oliver McCall is the winner by (KO8).

#139 Max Baer 9-1-0 (6) vs. #86 Big George Godfrey 15-1-0 (15)

Godfrey wins the 1st easily as Baer clowns around with the audience as usual. Baer better not take Big George lightly or he could be surprised to a rude awakening! Baer wins round 2 after finally deciding to throw a few punches. Entering the 4th, Baer has already been warned for fouling twice and has started to bleed from a punch landed by Godfrey. Max must have been up to his old tricks of staying out too late and partying, because he looks really fatigued going into the 6th. This could be a very long and painful night for him. Godfrey sends Baer down twice in the 9th. Baer is dazed and his legs look unstable. Baer is down again in the 12th but refuses to quit. Baer tries to rally in the 15th and shows tremendous heart by landing several blows that actually had some steam. There is no doubt that Godfrey will win this fight, but I cannot see him doing much more damage in this division with such a poor showing. How can I say poor showing with such a lopsided victory? Well, Baer was completely out of gas from the 6th on and Big George could not close it out. He will not be as fortunate against better, more conditioned and more serious fighters. Godfrey winner by (UD15). 144-138, 148-134, 148-136.

I was going to suggest a Norton fight, Ken vs. Chuck, but I think my boy Ken would be in big trouble.
