Arreola struggles but survives...

Chris Arreola, Mexico, 13-6-1 (8) vs. Jorge Alfredo Dascola, Argentina, 6-4-0 (3)

Coahuila, Mexico. Arreola is coming off a bit of a setback and wants to get back on track with a good showing against Dascola. Arreola starts the fight by outslugging Dascola in the first two rounds. He takes the 2nd, 22-6. Dascola is warned for hitting with an open glove, but does the most damage and outscores Arreola, 22-6, in the 3rd. Arreola seems quite content on exchanging blows with the Argentinian, but he should be more careful after his last fight. The middle rounds could have gone either way. We enter the 7th and Dascola look to be the more fatigued fighter. The Nightmare has a strong 8th, 20-5, and looks to be separating himself on the cards. Round 9 is filled with warnings and punches. The ref warns Arreola for low blows and Dascola for using his shoulder. Arreola outscores Dascola, 19-16. A right hook drops Dascola early in the 10th and a left cross at the end of the round. Arreola scores 24-4, in the 10th. Dascola does a good job of surviving and even winning most of the later rounds but the two knockdowns in the 10th may come back to hurt him. We go to the cards.

Winner: Arreola
Result: (MDec15)
Cards: 145-138 Arreola, 142-142, 144-139 Arreola
Punch stats: 44.7% - 32% Dascola

Although a bit out of shape, Savon marches on...

Felix Savon, Cuba, 7-0-0 (6) vs. Federico Malibran, Cuba, 9-3-0 (3)

Palacio de los Desportes, Havana, Cuba. Savon comes into this fight a little heavier than usual and his conditioning is something that we will have to watch if the fight goes into the latter rounds. The first two rounds are pretty even but Savon outscores his opponent, 12-6, in the 3rd. A left hook puts Malibran on his pants early in the 4th. He is able to get up but cannot survive the round as the fight is stopped at the 2:58 mark of the 4th.

Winner: Savon
Result: (TKO4)
Cards: 29-28, on all three cards in favor of Savon
Punch stats: 37.7% - 25.8% Malibran

On the Rampage again...

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, USA, 4-2-0 (4) vs. Ray Austin, USA, 7-6-0 (6)

Conseco Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, IN, USA. A short right hook puts Austin on his back in the 1st, but there is no time for Jackson to follow up after Austin get back to his feet. Rounds 2 & 3 are split. Jackson sends Austin back to his corner for a much needed rest after scoring a 25-8, 5th. Another solid round for Rampage, 17-6, in the 6th. A nice right hook make the acquaintance of Ray Austin’s face and puts him on the floor. Austin gets up but continues to cover up without responding and the referee stops the fight at the 2:17 mark of the 8th with Jackson scoring, 30-0, at the time.

Winner: Jackson
Result: (TKO8)
Cards: 69-63, 68-64, 69-63, all three cards in favor of Jackson
Punch stats: 50.6% - 43.8% Austin

Cota is brave, but Chavez is relentless...

Julio Cesar Chavez, Mexico, 2-1-0 (2) vs. Daniel Cota, Mexico, 1-0-0 (1)

Estadio Saltillo, Saltillo, Mexico. Chavez takes the 1st round, 12-6, but the big story is that both fighters have already been warned for rabbit punching and low blows in this opening round. Cota is on the wrong end of a beating in the 2nd, 14-2, as he goes back to his stool. Cota has not landed a single punch in the 4th, 5th or 6th, losing the rounds, 18-0, 21-0,16-0. Cota’s right eye is almost swollen shut. Cota continues to take a great deal of punishment but will not go down. The fight is finally stopped at the 2:59 mark of the 8th round.

Winner: Chavez
Result: (TKO8)
Cards: 70-63, 69-64, 70-63, all three cards in favor of Chavez
Punch stats: 41-243, 16.9% Cota / 278-560, 49.6% Chavez

BBC Championship

BBC Title Fight - London Arena, London, United Kingdom

[Champion] Lennox Lewis, UK, 17-2-0 (14) vs. [1/41] Joe Calzaghe, UK, 11-0-0 (9)

Lennox Lewis makes his first title defense against the British Boxing Council’s #1 ranked contender and #41 in the world, Joe Calzaghe. Calzaghe has made a meteoric rise up the charts after a brilliant amateur career and has an incredible following due to his popularity. Though both fighters claim the U.K., I can tell you that Calzaghe has always been adored while Lewis has been looked upon as a visitor from Jamaica or Canada. Lewis starts off quickly but is countered nicely by the challenger. Calzaghe comes back and takes the 1st, 12-5. And a stunningly, quick finish to our championship fight, as Joe “Pride of Wales” Calzaghe opens up and lets his punches fly, 31-2, in the 2nd. Lewis is unable to answer or protect himself and the fight has been stopped here at the 2:54 mark of the 2nd. I think it may have been a bit of a premature stoppage, (hmmm…seems to me there was a similar fight like that in Wales against an American fighter recently), but Lewis crawled in his shell like a turtle and never came back out to bite back. Calzaghe wins the BBC Championship in his first title fight and 12th fight of his pro career. The fans are going crazy!

Winner: Calzaghe
Result: (TKO2)
Cards: 10-9, all three cards in favor of Calzaghe
Punch stats: 17-109, 15.6% Lewis / 89-125, 71.2% Calzaghe

"The Kiwi Tank" rolls on...

George Stankovich, New Zealand, 7-0-0 (7) vs. August Tanuvasa, New Zealand, 6-8-0 (5)

Opera House, Wellington, NI, New Zealand. Stankovich takes the first two rounds but Tanuvasa comes back firing in the 3rd. Stankovich has his opponent hurt in the 5th, 17-5, but is unable to end the fight. Don’t go to the bathroom because these middle rounds are where Stankovich usually finishes off his opponents. A strong hook in the 8th starts the damage and a left uppercut puts Tanuvasa down. Tanuvasa gets up but is unable to protect himself and the ref steps in to stop the fight at the 2:28 mark of the 8th. Stankovich continues to be the surprise of the ICBA right now! He was not a very highly regarded fighter coming out of the amateurs and not many people expected this type of success and results. He is becoming a fan-favorite because of his ability to end fights with his power. We will have to continue to watch his career as he progresses and takes on some tougher competition. We must give him a nickname..."The Kiwi Tank!"

Winner: Stankovich
Result: (TKO8)
Cards: 68-65, 69-64, 69-64, all three cards in favor of Stankovich
Punch stats: 111-215, 51.% Tanuvasa / 228-601, 37.9% Stankovich

U.K. Boxing Group has the top 2 ranked UK boxers...could be facing a dilemma...

Lloyd Honeyghan, UK, 8-1-0 (7) vs. Robert Norton, UK, 10-3-0 (4)

Cardiff International Arena, Cardiff, South Glamorgan, United Kingdom. The first two rounds are split but the surprise is that Norton is bringing the fight to Honeyghan. The third round is too close to call. Again, Norton is the aggressor and takes the 4th, 13-7. We didn’t expect to see Norton looking to exchange blows since he only has 4 stoppages in 13 fights, but he is putting the pressure on Lloyd. 12-6, 5th for Honeyghan. A big 6th, 23-2, for Honeyghan as the fight is starting to sway in favor of Lloyd now. Honeyghan is doing most of his damage as a counterpuncher in this fight. Norton’s left eye is starting to swell up. Honeyghan has a cut under his right eye. Honeyghan has a big 9th, 27-2, and Norton’s left eye is getting worse by the punch. Norton misses with a lead right and eats a right uppercut that sends him sprawling at the end of the 11th. Honeyghan seems to have a pretty big lead right now. And as soon as we say that, Lloyd is having his way in the 12th, 19-2, when Norton unleashes a combination of punches that puts down Honeyghan and provides some drama for the last three rounds. A left cross puts Norton down in the 13th. Honeyghan has a big round, 26-2, as the ref looks at Norton very closely, but allows him to continue into the 14th. And we go to the cards.

Winner: Honeyghan
Result: (UD15)
Cards: 146-136, 145-137, 144-138, all three cards in favor of Honeyghan
Punch stats: 219-899, 24.4% Norton / 516-1089, 47.4% Honeyghan

Morales warms up and finishes Bojorquez...

Erik Morales, Mexico, 4-0-0 (3) vs. Felipe Bojorquez, Mexico, 5-8-1 (4)

Jai Alai Fronton de Tijuana, Tijuana, Mexico. The first three rounds are too close to call as both men are content to fight on the inside. A straight left starts a convincing 4th round, 16-2, for Morales. Morales is starting to feel out Bojorquez as he takes his second straight round, 13-6. Morales is finding his way inside of Bojorquez’s defense and lands, 15-5, in the 6th. It took a few rounds for Morales to heat up but he is bringing it all out here in the 7th. Bojorquez has no answer and the fight is stopped at the 2:18 mark of the 7th round.

Winner: Morales
Result: (TKO7)
Cards: 59-55, 59-55, 60-54, all three cards in favor of Morales
Punch stats: 81-254, 31.9% Bojorquez / 198-430, 46%, Morales

Cotto destroys opponent...

Miguel Cotto, Puerto Rico, 1-0-0 (1) vs. Albert Jimenez, Puerto Rico, 1-1-0 (1)

Diamond Palace Hotel, Condado, Puerto Rico. A left hook to the body puts Jimenez down early in the 1st and a sharp right cross ends the fight at the 1:32 mark of the 1st round. Hope you didn’t pay too much for that front row seat?

Winner: Cotto
Result: (KO1)
Cards: N/A
Punch stats: 0-0, 0% Jimenez / 19-19, 100% Cotto

Hey, if your not in shape this is the best possible way to handle it. Good showing from Savon.

Feels nice to pick up a easy win again. I'm hoping to gain back all the momentum Rampage lost last month. We really need to get his career rolling again so no more breaks for awhile.

U.K. Boxing Group would like to congratulate Joe for winning the BBC title! We hope this will be a springboard for bigger and better things for him. Lloyd's performance was a little uneven but he got the job done. Looks like there will be a rematch between these two in the near future.

Thanks for the info. I will have to find out what city, I got a picture from the venues link and it just said Coahuila. Interesting coincidence that your fighter fought in your city!
