Povetkin scores a nice win...

Alexander Povetkin, Russia, 16-3-1 (10) vs Valery Brudov, 12-5-1 (12)

Arena Krylya, Moscow, Russia. This fight pit’s the RFB #7 Povetkin and #8 Brudov. Povetkin starts quickly and has a nice opening round, 18-6. Brudov responds with a 7-2, 2nd round. The next two rounds are closely contested while Povetkin settles into a rhythm in the 5th and lets his hands go, 18-8. Brudov has Povetkin in trouble in the 6th as he lands some nice combinations, 19-2. Povetkin shows no lingering problems from the 6th as he clearly commanded the ring here, 21-0, in the 7th. The 9th is a horrible round for Brudov, as he is sent to the canvas and has a cut opened up over his right eye. Brudov barely survives the 11th, 24-2, as he was on the floor for the second time in the fight. Povetkin doubled up on a hook that hurt Brudov and put him down. Brudov is down again, his cut has re-opened, but he somehow manages to get up and get to the corner, bloody and beaten. This reminds me of the Jess Willard/Jack Dempsey fight where Willard was knocked down 7 times in the 1st round but kept getting back up because he didn’t want to lose his championship by quitting. The doctor has come up to the ring and the ref finally stops the fight at the 1:18 mark of the 13th round. This is a very nice win for Povetkin and he showed a lot of the technical training that he has been working on in the gym. This win should help move Povetkin towards a shot at the RFB Title held by Vadim Tokarev.

Winner: Povetkin
Result: (TKO13)
Cards: 116-110, on all three cards in favor of Povetkin
Punch stats: 204-393, 51.9% Brudov - 358-907, 39.5% Povetkin

Great win for Alexander. He has improved much more technically although his defense needs more work. U.K Boxing Group feels Alexander needs one or two more fights agaisnt Russian contenders before going for a title shot.

Cane lands a whopping 70% of his punches in win...

Union Cane, USA, 5-1-0 (5) vs Jack Casper, USA, 3-2-0 (2)

Cape Cod Melody Tent, Hyannis, MA, USA. Union Cane starts the round with a flurry of punches and easily outscores Casper, 22-6. The 2nd round slows to a crawl, but Cane opens back up in the 3rd, 22-0. Cane’s defense has been exceptional tonight as Casper is unable to mount any kind of meaningful attacks the entire fight. Cane takes the 5th and 6th easily. Casper is taking a beating but continues to come forward during the 7th through the 10th rounds. Cane continues to mount an offensive barrage and the referee finally shows some mercy and stops the debacle at the 2:49 mark of the 11th round.

Winner: Cane
Result: (TKO11)
Cards: 100-91, 100-90, 100-91, all in favor of Cane
Punch stats: 138-591, 23.4% Casper - 402-572, 70.3% Cane

BBC Championship

BBC Title Fight - MEN Arena, Manchester, United Kingdom

[Champion] Joe Calzaghe, UK, 12-0-0 (10) vs. [8] Don Cockell, UK, 12-2-0 (4)

Calzaghe enters the ring for his first defense of his British Boxing Council’s Heavyweight Title. Cockell puts up a good showing in the first two rounds as the fight gets underway. The champion comes on strong in the 3rd, 24-3, clearly out pointing his man. We head to the 6th and this fight seems to be a bit closer than most had anticipated. The champ seems to be gathering momentum, taking the 6th and 7th rounds with aggressive and accurate punching. Cockell catches Calzaghe with an uppercut on the inside and slightly dazes the champ for a moment. A sudden right hook to the body catches Cockell off guard and sends him down to the canvas. This shot reminds me of the left hook from Hatton that put Castillo down recently. Cockell is unable to get up and Joe Calzaghe retains his BBC Title by way of (KO10).

Winner: Calzaghe
Result: (KO10)
Cards: 88-83, 87-84, 88-83, all three cards in favor of Calzaghe
Punch stats: 129-565, 22.8% Cockell - 234-656, 35.7% Calzaghe

Since Savon should be around 3rd in the CABO if he wins his next match that means he would be the number 1 contender in the CBC correct? We might have to get Savon a CBC title fight if a opening for the CABO title doesn't open up right away.

Glad to see Savon and his handlers are paying attention to the news updates. Yes, Savon would most likely enter the rating that high, however, because the CBC feels that Savon does not have much experience, they would want him to fight an eliminator bout against the other top contender.

I don't see anyone on the Puerto Rico list that is going to give Cotto much problems.

The other top contender would be Gomez unless he loses between now and then. That would easily be Savon's toughest fight yet but here at MBP we've never ducked a challenge before so we'll be happy to do it when they want.

You say that now but wait until Ruiz shows Cotto his own special brand of man love.

I definitely agree with that comment! But Cotto is coming up with other prospects that will be eager for the PRBO Title at about the same time that he is going to be ranked. Kermit Cintron, 1-0-0 (1), Edwin Rosario, 2-0-0 (2), Felix Trinidad, 2-0-0 (1). Two others considering going pro are LaPorte and Benitez. Hey, couldnt make it too easy for Cotto, although I have to admit that I am a fan of Cotto's now too. Love his aggressiveness in the ring. He exudes star quality and his perseverance from the injury that he suffered. Just worried about his chin, but he always seems to get up. Forgot, there is also a big (6'8", 270), heavy-fisted HW amateur getting ready to enter pros from PR named Kenneth "The Big Chill" Mills (fictional).

Hilarious! Just make sure that Cotto's trunks are tied securely!

Seems about right. Gomez's management is probably not going to take another fight and will wait until Savon gets ranked for a fight in August. There isnt a mandatory CBC Title fight scheduled so the winner of the eliminator bout will face Valdes in September/October. That is, if everything goes as planned. Just wanted to let you know that there is a fighter that is shooting up the ranks from Cuba that is very dangerous, Marvis "No Mercy" Noel (fictional).

That sounds like a good plan of course if everything works out in Savon's favor he won't be holding the CBC belt for very long as it's only a stepping stone to the fight we really want, Teofilo Stevenson. How far long is Marvis Noel in his career?

Noel has been fighting since the beginning of the uni in 1950, but suffered an injury and has been inactive since July 1953. He is currently 12-1-0 (11) and is ranked #230 in CABO. If he was active, he would be #2 in CBC. Will be starting training again and should get back in the ring within the next two months.
