News from England

The British Boxing Council (BBC) has stripped Bob Fitzsimmons of his belt. Fitzsimmons was due to fight Jack Gardner in a mandatory rematch for the BBC Championship but has reportedly sustained an injury that will not allow him to defend his title. Herbert Crossley, 10-1-1 (7) will step in and fight Jack Gardner later this month for the BBC Title.

Trieste, Italy. Brunelli has a large following here in Trieste, but Chagaev does a wonderful job of silencing the crowd in the first round by coming out and attacking. Brunelli responds with an inspired second that gets the crowd on its feet. 11-2, Brunelli in the 4th. 12-6, Chagaev in the 5th. Chagaev does a good job of staying on the outside at the beginning of rounds but allows Brunelli to get inside in the last 1:30 of each round. Brunelli has been warned for a low blow but seems to be outboxing Chagaev here as we enter the 9th. The 9th is good for the visitor, 17-4. Both men are doing a lot of holding but Brunelli has a good 10th, 16-4. It looks as though Brunelli has a nice lead as we enter the 13th. 14-6, another round for Brunelli in the 13th. 6-3, another round to Brunelli in the 14th. Chagaev finally connects after letting his hands go and wins the last round, 14-4. We will go to the scorecards but I dont think Chagaev did enough to win here tonight.

Winner: Chagaev
Result: (SD15)
Cards: 143-142 Brunelli, 143-142 Chagaev, 143-142 Chagaev
Punch stats: 397-849, 46.8% Brunelli - 230-1116, 20.6% Chagaev

He is definitely not off to a great start for you. I thought he lost the fight as I was watching it, but that last round he won was the difference in the judges scorecards. I couldnt believe he won on the judges scorecards in Brunelli's backyard!

No, he was probably what you thought, a clever boxer, without exceptional punching power "5". He was just connecting pretty easy that I was surprised when I was watching the fight. Cane's defense was really poor during the fight. Was still a "good" loss for Cane, if there is such a good thing, since both fighters were ranked and rated very close to each other.

Stankovich takes the rematch over Bau with 15th round KO...

George Stankovich, New Zealand, 13-1-0 (13) vs Joveci Bau, New Zealand, 10-5-2 (5)

Opera House, Wellington, NI, New Zealand. George Stankovich faces Joveci Bau in a rematch of an August 1954 fight which Bau won. Stankovich was undefeated at the time and wants a chance to redeem himself here in New Zealand. Stankovich lands the first big shot in this rematch of Kiwis and wins the first two rounds. Bau avoids any damage in the 3rd but eats a big uppercut in the 4th and seems to be behind early in this fight. A big 5th for Stankovich, 24-3, in the 5th. The middle rounds are pretty close but Bau looks as though he is fading here in the 9th. A huge hook puts Bau down in the 10th. There is not enough time left in the round for Stankovich to follow up, 24-6. Bau recovers and has a good 11th, 11-5. Bau again in the 12th, 9-4. 12-10, Stankovich in the 13th. Bau is trapped in his own corner and a barrage of punches puts him down for the 2nd time in the fight. Bau comes out in the last round on shaky legs and Stankovich takes advantage by landing a big right cross that puts Bau down for good!

Winner: Stankovich
Result: (KO15)
Cards: 135-132, 137-128, 137-128, all three cards in favor of Stankovich
Punch stats: 253-605, 41.8% Bau - 318-865, 36.8% Stankovich

5. Wally Evans, 17-5-0 (15)
6. Jim O'Sullivan, 17-1-0 (14)
7. Cyril Whittaker, 14-4-1 (3)

Nice bounce back win for Battery .. tricky picking RFG's because you can only go by their record and Dingleberry was 2-0.

This is very true, especially with some of the weird ratings. It takes a lot of courage for the promoters to schedule fights with either RFG fighters or the fictional fighters that I have created because you never know where you are at. But I think that promotional fighters from the ICBA region will eventually have to fight some of these guys because the region isnt as strong as the others. I think if you have a fighter in the USBA, CABO or EBU, there are always fighters with pretty solid records that will give good competition.
