Football (soccer) has really grown in popularity here since we made the World Cup. The A-League features 8 teams, 3 of which are from New South Wales (my state), with one each from Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. There's also a New Zealand team in the league. Before the A-League was formed the national competition featured an assortment of teams and a number of them were affiliated to other nations, as it was mainly migrants from Italy, Greece and other European countries who were interested in the sport. Team names like Melbourne Croatia, Brunswick Juventus and Marconi give you an idea what I'm talking about. Some of the supporters of these teams had some pretty heated, violent rivalries which gave the sport an image problem in Australia. However the A-League has eliminated that situation and it's been a great success so far. |

Basketball has lost a lot of popularity here in recent years, it's decline pretty much starting after Jordan retired. Our national league, the NBL, has struggled to attract fans. |
