Round 2 Fantastic 4s, McBride-Burman, LeDoux-Schiesser
Round 2 was held on Tax Day, April 15, on a beautiful day in Fenway Park. The first set of fights went as follows:
Kevin McBride (1-0) vs. Red Burman (2-0 1) – After a slow start, they exchanged punches and fought to a tie in the 1st. Burman tagged McBride with a straight right to start the 2nd, then the two began to exchange leather in earnest! Red connected on a solid combination, while Kevin landed two righteous uppercuts. Burman was busier, and won on points, 18-12. McBride’s big uppercuts were the last real punches he landed for the next four rounds. Burman dominated him in each of these rounds, starting with a 42 punch 3rd and never landing less than that in the next three! He hurt McBride several times, and ruled the ring! McBride rallied in the 7th with a sweet hook, but may have won it, 13-12, as it was the first time he’d displayed any real offense since the 2nd.Burman won the 8th, 19-2, on the strength of 18 hooks, but was penalized a point for low blows. He drilled Kevin repeatedly in the 9th, knocking him down at one point for a 6 count, winning, 20-7, though Kevin landed a searing right as the round ended. Way behind (82-89 on all cards), McBride went all out for the KO. For some reason as yet unknown, so did Burman! McBride crashed a cross home, and Red fell to the canvas . He made it to his knee, but was counted out, McBride the winner by an improbable KO at 2:03 of the 10th! Burman had outlanded Kevin, 377-122! What was his corner thinking of in terms of strategy ? All he had to do was cover up! What a strange ending!!!Scott LeDoux (1-0) vs. Mario Schiesser (1-0-1) – After the surprise ending to the prior bout, could this one match it in intensity? They split the first 2 rounds, both fighting defensively. Mario rode some nice uppercuts to win the 3rd, nudged Scott in a boring 4th, then boxed nicely in the 5th, landing 14 crosses among his 40 punches landed, taking a nice lead at the halfway mark! ![]() They traded leather in the 6th, but Mario won out, 17-11, on the strength of 45 hits! He hooked his way to a 10-0 shoutout in the 7th, then LeDoux, desperate, rallied, smashing a huge left and a straight right hook that staggered, but didn’t drop, Schiesser. Scott won the 9th as well, connecting on three bombs, the best a hook to the body, but Mario hung on! Punched out, Scott could do nothing in the 10th, and Mario pecked his way to the round. I scored the fight 97-94, Schiesser. He outlanded LeDoux, 265-168, and was in command for all but the 8th & 9th. The judges scored it 96-94, 95-95 & 97-93, a majority decision for Mario Schiesser! |

Round 2 Fantastic 4s, Spinks, J.L. Johnson, Knoetze-Chaplin
Leon Spinks (1-0 1) vs. John Lester Johnson (1-0) – Leon burst from the starting gates, catching Johnson with a wicked combination in the opening seconds, and John dropped. Up at the count of 4, he fought a nice defensive round. Spinks connected on a series of hooks, but none of them did any real damage. Lleon connected on a looping right that was clumsy but effective to start the 2nd. He followed this with a sharp uppercut, then another combination that John Lester, this time for a 3 count! Leon staggered his hapless foe with an uppercut, then dropped him yet again with a booming hook, this time for a 4 count. Johnson was courageous but unable to continue, and Spinks was declared the winner by a TKO at 2:33 of the 2nd. It was a very convincing win for the Thing-like Spinks! ![]() Kallie Knoetze (1-0 1) vs. George Chaplin (1-0-1) – Kallie came in out of shape and with ring rust, and it showed in the 1st, as Chaplin connected with 53 punches, 18 being jabs, to shine, 20-4. Knoetze did land a nice uppercut at the end, but that was his only real connection. The 2nd thru 4th were low-scoring affairs, as George boxed cautiously and Knoetze was missing most of the time. The points went 9-8, 10-7 & 7-6, all for Chaplin, but they were generally too close to call. Having missed out on some good opportunities, Chaplin put it all together again in the 5th. Kallie stung him with a jarring jab to open the round, then George took over, landing two sweet uppercuts, 48 punches total for the round, good for a 23-4 advantage! ![]() Knoetze fired off two solid uppercuts of his own to take the 6th, but was unable to penetrate George’s defensive style in the 7th, when Chaplin countered well enough to win. The 8th was a pick-em round, George’s frequent jabs virtually offset by a monster hook that backed him up! George won a low-scoring 9th, Knoetze becoming frustrated and losing a point for leaning on Chaplin’s neck. George frustrated Kallie again in the 10th, but had a point deducted himself for a blatant head butt, an uncharacteristic move on his part! Chaplin outlanded Knoetze, 277-135, and I had it 98-92 Geroge. The judges score the fight 96-92, 95-93 & 97-91, all for George Chaplin, who landed more jabs and uppercuts than Kallie did punches! It was a mystery how Chaplin could look so good in several rounds, but then fight cautiously and look bad in others. ![]() |

Round 2 Fantastic 4s, Besmanoff-McCoy, Maher-Bergeron
Willi Besmanoff (1-0 1) vs. Al McCoy (1-0) – Besmaoff had stopped Amelio Agramonte, while NcCoy had won a split decision over Toxie Hall. McCoy was cut after a head butt in the first, and then it was worsened by another (Besmaoff was warned on one of them), and the fight was stopped, a Technical Draw!
![]() Andreas was the guest commentator in the rematch. They split the first 2 rounds, which were close, as Al was ensuring no re-occurrence took place. Willi banged home 18 hooks for a convincing 3rd, but the next 2 were, at best, pick em defensive rounds with little punching. ![]() McCoy caught up with Willi in a 15-10 6th, landing a series of jabs and crosses, and opened a gash over Willi’s right eyebrow, possibly from a head butt. It was still bleeding in the 7th, and Al landed 16 jabs to win, 10-2, as Willi’s vision was obviously affected. Al landed a jarring left in the 8th & a sweet uppercut at the round’s end, good for a 13-4 advantage, and Willi’s cut was even worse! Willi was trying to protect his cut in the 9th, but it was still gushing . He did cut Al inside the left eyebrow, and may have won a 9-8 round on the basis of landing 9 hooks! Willi’s cut was closed as he came out for the 10th, but McCoy was still the aggressor, trying to avoid his own cut worsening, and he won, 8-2. McCoy outlanded Besmanoff, 246-209, with 75 crosses, and rallied well, but I had the fight a 95-95 draw. Andreas felt Willi was the winner by a 96-94 margin. The judges scored it 96-94, 95-95 & 99-91, Besmanoff the winner by a majority decision! How the one judge, Larry Doggett, got 99-91 is beyond me! These two are sure to meet again!Peter Maher (1-0 1) vs. Jean-Francois Bergeron (1-0 1) – Maher had stopped Jumbo Cummings, Bergeron Roger Rischer. Andreas also guested for this fight. Maher took a searing left early on, coming back with a solid straight right and banging home crosses to take the 1st, 14-7. Bergeron took the next two, landing two smashing crosses and a hook in the 3rd, but was also twice warned for holding and hitting! Maher won the 4th on the strength of 9 hooks and an awesome cross, and the 5th was a snoozer, the fans booing!Peter took the 6th, 11-2, as Bergeron fouled yet again. Jean-F landed a thunderous uppercut to open the 7th, backing Maher up, then was like a Tazmanian Devil as he rained punch after ounch upon poor Peter, 54 in total, with two more sonic uppercuts. At 2:42 of the 7th, The ref awarded Bergeron a TKO, as Maher was almost helpless. Bergeron had been losing, and Maher and his corner were incensed, as they insisted he was only biding his time and wasn’t hurt. Bergeron is the one to advance! |

Round 2 Fantastic 4s, Firpo-Ruhder, Jefferson-Savage
Luis Firpo (1-0 1) vs. Gus Ruhder (1-0 1) – With Firpo in the ring, this figured to be a slam-bam kind of match, probably with a short duration
! Firpo had stopped Ed Mahone in 3, while Gus had knocked out tough Mike DeJeon in 10! Gus was the one who landed the first big blow here, knocking Firpo down for an 8 count early in the 1st! He landed a massive cross and sweet hook as well, winning easily, 19-9, though Firpo tagged him with a massive hook to the body!Coming out with his hands low to start the 2nd, Luis walloped Gus with a right, then clobberd him with a big hook! Gus answered with an uppercut that made Firpo shake his head, and Gus landed 40 shots in the round, which arguably went to Firpo, 19-17! The fans were cheering the non-stop action! ![]() The 3rd was rock-em, sock-em, like the others. Firpo connected with a big hook and later with a cross, and Ruhder’s left eye was beginning to swell badly. Gus battled back, and led for the round, 14-13, taking advantage of Firpo’s hands being low. They traded shots in the 4th, Firpo’s left being answered by a ferocious cross, but then Firpo smashed a hook against Ruhder’s jaw, and Gus dropped. On his knee at the 8 count, he couldn’t quite make it to his feet, and Firpo was the winner by a KO at 2:07 of the 4th! Losing at the time, he said he’d gladly take Gus on again as soon as the tourney finished, and the fans saluted both men! ![]() Derrick Jefferson (1-0 1) vs. Jim Savage (1-0) – Jefferson had stopped Shannon Briggs on cuts, while Savage had decisioned Maurice Harris. Gentleman Jim was anything but a savage in this fight. Jefferson won the first 2 rounds easily, landing several big shots. Savage rallied to take the 3rd, 16-6, landing hooks, crosses and one sweet straight right. Unimpressed, Derrick pounded him with a hook to start the 4th, followed with an uppercut and then floored him for a 7 count with a wicked combination. Savage lasted the round, but lost big time, 24-8. Savage won the 5th, 15-6, with 11 uppercuts and a mighty cross, and Jefferson’s left eye was swelling. Derrick won the 6th, his two booming hooks offsetting a nice cross from Savage, but Savage stormed back yet again in the 7th. He landed a beautiful combination, one of 14 he got in, as well as 13 uppercuts, but he was penalized a point for excessive low blows. Jefferson’s eye was looking worse, and the momentum Savage was building eroded with the penalty deduction. Derrick was angry in the 8th, and pummeled Jim with a wild overhand right, Savage dropping like my stocks! He was up but wobbly at the count of 9! Derrick won the 9th as Savage was tiring, and then landed some heavy artillery to stun Savage and claim the 10th in a close round. I had it 97-90 for Jefferson. The judges scored the fight 98-91, 96-91 & 96-92, Derrick Jefferson the winner by a unanimous decision! |

Round 2 Fantastic 4s, Bey-Sheppard, Amonti-Renault
David Bey (1-0 1) vs. Curtis Sheppard (2-0) – Bey had savaged Reuben Vargas in 4, while Sheppard had beaten the last level 3, James Ellis
. Bey started slow, and Curtis took the 1st, 10-4, emphasizing it with a laser hook at round’s end! That awoke the sleeping giant (or Thing), who pummeled Shep in the 2nd, 19-0, pounding in 47 punches, one a lethal (almost) combination! Bey won the 3rd with some sweet counterpunches, building a nice lead. They rocked each other in the 4th. Curtis started things with a sweet combination. Bey came back with an even-better left, Shep connected on a solid hook, and Bey on a booming cross at the end. Shep landed 10 uppercuts, winning, 14-11, despite Bey’s 15 hooks! Curtis came out for the 5th with his hands low as a result of the punches he had absorbed. Bey blasted him with a huge left, but he retaliated with a nasty hook to the body. Bey was a little more active, and led, 15-12. Bey asserted himself a bit more to claim the 6th, 14-8, getting a big hook to the body that did some damage. A tired Sheppard lost the 7th, 10-7, as Bey barraged him with hooks and crosses. He also got frustrated and lost a point for a mythical head butt! Bey finished the job, pounding a badly-worn Sheppard in the 8th, putting him down for a 9 count with a vicious cross , then knocking him out, at the 2:57 mark of the 8th, with a gonzo hook! Bey definitely is a candidate for Thing honors, as is Luis Firpo and Leon Spinks!![]() Sante Amonti (1-0) vs. Jack Renault (1-0 1) – Round 1 was a war, ostensibly won by Amonti, 19-17. He connected on a dazzling hook and a leg-wobbling left, and on a string of uppercuts, swelling Jack’s right eye. Renault landed 16 jabs & 15 combinations, but Amonti’s power ounches made the difference! Renault won a close, quiet 2nd, as neither fighter could sustain the pace. Sante scored a 3 count KD in an otherwise-quiet 3rd, 8-4, then controlled the 4th16-5, with a sweet cross and an uppercut! Jabbing and landing crosses effectively, Amonti won the 5th easily, and Renault’s eye was hitting orange status! Amonti was penalized a point for a low blow early in the 6th, then went legit and blasted Jack from one side of the ring to the other, putting him down for a 9 count on a head-snapping uppercut, and dominating him, 27-4 ! Renault was tired as he came out for the 7th, and Sante poured it on, tattooing him, knocking him down again for a 9 count! The ref stopped it finally, Amonti the winner by a TKO at 2:46 of the 7th! He landed almost twice as many punches, and Jack’s face was a mess and a reminder of those blows! |

Round 2 Fantastic 4s, Tandberg-Miteff, the Dance!
Olle Tandberg (1-0) vs. Alex Miteff (1-0 1) – Mike Hanson was the guest commentator for this one. They split a slow first 2 rounds, but Tandberg was cut under his left eye. Olle boxed nicely to take the next two rounds, hammering home hooks, crosses and jabs, and cutting Alex’s mouth. Miteff landed a huge hook at the end of the 5th to take that one, 11-4, and won the 6th, 12-4, on a series of hooks, and the fight seemed knotted.
Tandberg rallied to dominate the 7th, 12-2, as his hooks & jabs found their target. He jabbed and hooked his way to take the 8th, and was in great shape! Miteff bulled in for some hooks in the 9th, and got the nod in part because of a jarring round-ending hook. He took a much-needed 10th, 6-0, as both fought defensively, but his hook to the body had some steam on it! I scored it a 95 all draw, Mike H had Miteff winning, 97-95. The judges scored it 95-95, 97-93 Tandberg & 97-93 Miteff, a draw! Tandberg had squandered a great opportunity and the punch count was almost even, 254-241.They traded the first four rounds in the rematch, each of which was fairly close. The 5th was dead even, 11-11, Tandberg scoring with a bunch of hooks, like he did in the 1st, Miteff throwing onw pulverizing cross and a bunch of lighter ones! Miteff won the 6th, 12-6, on a hard left and 16 hooks all told. Tandberg landed 49 times in controlling the 7th, 16-4, banging 16 hooks home! It was dead even at this point to me, and the 8th was almost even, 7-6, Miteff scoring with a laser right! Unlike the last fight, Tandberg didn’t disappear in the 9th! He connected 13 times with jabs, 10 times with hooks, pounding out a decisive 15-7 round! He was defensive-minded in the 10th, but landed some nice counters, and pulled it out, as Miteff kept missing with his bombs!I had it 97-95, Tandberg. Mike H had left the stadium, seeing some opportunities to skewer a few folks on some posts, so he didn’t score the fight . The judges scored it 97-93 Miteff, 98-93 Tandberg and 96-94, for the winner by a split decision,…Olle Tandberg! Olle landed far more punches this time, 302-208, with 96 being his favorite weapon, the hook! Truly, these two could have fought all night!! |

Round 2 Fantastic 4s, Nielsen-Boswell, Dorazio-Evangelista
There were 5 fights remaining in Round 2 of the tourney.
Brian Nielsen (1-0) vs. Cedric Boswell (2-0 1) – Nielsen came in looking like Butterbean or Danny Wofford, a tad overweight, but not like Tex Cobb, who said he wasn’t fat ! He came out slugging in the first, launching two massive uppercuts. He built up a nice lead, but caught a savage hook to the body at the end of the round that left him gasping. Boswell blasted the portly one with a big combination and later with a cross to take the 2nd easily.Brian took the 3rd, his booming cross more than compensating for Cedric’s series of hooks. Brian floored Boswell with a combination in the 4th, and many thought the fight to be over ! Cedric made it up at the count of 9, but ran into a straight left. He lasted the round, scoring some points, but was fortunate to have beat the bell.Boswell continued his recovery in the 5th, hammering a big hook and combination to slow down the charging Nielsen! The 6th was brutal, as Boswell pummeled the whalish Nielsen, blasting him with a winging right, then an uppercut and finally a right that had Brian wobbling. Brian sustained a cut above his left eye, and was a bleeding mess at round’s end. The 7th was even worse, as Cedric staggered Brian wuth a straight right, then pounded him with hooks en route to a 23-4 round! Nielsen’s right eye was swelling, and he was a tired looking mess as he collapsed onto his stool. Boswell used Brian as a punching bag in the 8th, landing 51 punches before getting a KO at 2:48 of the 8th on a wicked combination! Nielsen should now know better about coming in heavy.Gus Dorazio (1-0-1) vs. Alfredo Evangelista (1-0 1) – Alfredo started fast with a nice hook and straight right, and ruled the round until being cut over the right eyebrow in the last seconds. Belting Gus with a jarring right to open the 2nd, Alfredo won the round, though a late rally by Gus reopened his cut. They banged away at each other in the 3rd, and Gus was a bit more effective, winning, 14-10, on the strength of 42 punches. Gus continued to box nicely, building a lead in the 4th, and reopened and worsened Evangelista’s cut. The ref and doc jumped in, and Dorazio was declared the winner by a TKO on cuts at 1:59 of the 4th. |

Round 2 Fantastic 4s, Whitehurst-Baker
Bert Whitehurst (1-0 1) vs. Bob Baker (1-0) – Bert won the first 3 low-scoring rounds, cutting Baker on the left eyebrow in the 3rd. Bob came back to take the 4th through 6th, with hooks being his major weapon. His cut was reopened and checked in the 5th. Whitehurst won a close 7th, but Baker went for broke in the 8th and got a 10-0 whitewash! I had the fight dead even at this point, and Baker fired off 14 hooks to take the 9th, as Whitehurst was tired and clinching a lot. Bert threw and missed a lot in a desultory 4-4 10th, and I had Baker winning, 96-95, as he outlanded Bert, 232-147. The judges scored it 95-96, 96-95 & 96-96, a draw! So they got ready for a rematch, and Bert had dodged a bullet! ![]() Baker boxed nicely to take the 1st in the rematch, landing 18 hooks among his 37 punches! The 2nd was a snorer, Bert ahead on points, 4-2, but no action at all. Bert won the 3rd & 4th handily, landing sharp jabs and a bunch of crosses. Baker came back with a beautiful 16-2 5th, landing 54 times with telling jabs and crosses, and Bert’s left eye was swelling. Switching to hooks, Bob took the 6th, making the fight even to this point, and Whitehurst’s eye was looking worse because of the pinpointed punches. Whitehurst rallied to take the 7th, as he connected 47 times, getting home some nice crosses. He took a low-scoring 8th as well, as the fighters were getting sloppy, and seemed to be well in the lead. Baker dominated the 9th with a series of rapier-like jabs, and Bert’s eye was swelling to alarming proportions. Both went for the KO in the 10th, and Baker was the one who landed significantly more blows. On the strength of Baker’s rounds 9 & 10, I had it a 95-95 draw. The judges scored the fight 96-95, 96-95 & 98-93 (?) for the winner by a unanimuous decision, …Bob Baker! Over 20 rounds, there was little to separate these two! ![]() |

Round 2 Fantastic 4s, Ward-Nobles, Ettore-Wallace
These are the final two fights of Round 2!!!
Stan Ward (1-0-1) vs. Gerald Nobles (1-0 1) – Ward won all but the 4th of the first 5 rounds in what was a low-scoring affair. He had a real nice 3rd, filled with jabs and combinations, and Nobles had two big shots to take the 4th, but the other 3 were close. Stan used his jab and combinations to dictate the 6th, but Nobles jolted him with a hook to the midsection and a booming right to claim the 7th. Stanley stayed away and won a close 8th, then the two traded blows in an exciting 9th, won by Nobles, 14-12. He landed 3 huge shots, the last a hook to the body, to offset Stan’s lighter jabs & crosses. Ward won the all-important 10th, 10-7, evading all but one of Nobles’ bombs, and scoring effectively when he had to. I had Ward the winner, 97-93, as he landed almost twice as many punches. The judges agreed, Ward being the winner by a unanimous decision. Exciting? No way, except for a few rounds near the end. Neither fighter should have advanced based on this fight. ![]() Al Ettore (1-0) vs. Coley Wallace (2-0-1 1) – Al was the narrow leader in the 1st, 10-9, then took the 2nd a bit more convincingly. Wallace used a sweet jab and big hook to take the 3rd, but Ettore came back to bash him in the 4th, landing 51 times, the best being an uppercut that resulted in a 2 count KD ! Al threw groups of hooks & crosses in the 5th, and landed enough to win and be well up at the midway point!![]() The 6th brought the crowd to their feet! Wallace opened with a smashing uppercut, Al answering with a cranium-crusher! They each landed over 45 punches, Wallace scoring slightly more, 19-17! He lost a point for a low blow in the 7th, a round he won handily, and that deduction slowed his momentum. Ettore hooked his way through the 8th, and connected 63 times to dominate the 9th, after which Wallace’s right eye was swollen big time! Going for broke, Coley knocked Ettore down to start the 10th, and Al barely made it up at the count of 9 ! Wallace landed 2 massive hooks, but Ettore was then able to establish himself defensively and prevent further damage. I scored it 95-93, Ettore. The judges scored it 92-95, 94-93 & 94-93, for, the winner by a split decision,…Al Ettore! He outlanded Wallace 357-223, with 112 hooks! The penalty deduction hurt Wallace more than it did Ettore! |
