Stupendous 6s Round 1 Fight 23
Larry Middleton vs. Vaughn Bean – Infinity picked Middleton to get all the way to the Final Four. A Middleton-Chaplin fight could decide which of the true Baltimore boxers was best, but can they survive enough rounds to meet?
Vicious Vaughn hoped to make that a non-happening event.Middleton looked like a master in the first, crafting a big lead until Bean rocked him with a vicious (ugh ) combination. Larry won the round, 14-9, and rallied to knot the 2nd, 10-10. Bean came on to take the 3rd & 4th, 8-4 & 11-4, nicely defending against the canny southpaw!Larry won a slow 5th, 9-4, with a monster hook at the end, and then they waltzed through a 6-6 6th. Bean had his jab penetrating Larry’s defense in the 7th, connecting 14 times to win big, 13-6. Middleton rallied to win the 8th, 15-5, landing 14 hooks and 40 punches total. This one seemed up for grabs at this point. Vaughn rode a laser left hook to the body to a 13-4 9th, putting himself in a good position. But it was Middleton who struck the telling blow in an 8-3 10th, a solid cross. I had it even, 96-96. The judges scored it 96-94 Middleton, 95-95 & 95-95, a majority draw! Bean won a rock-em, sock-em opening round in the rematch, 20-14, the fans cheering all the action! A jet-propelled left just at round’s end was the difference, as Middleton had been landing blow for blow, combinations his major weapon. The big event was Middleton being cut over his left eye, which caused a temporary stoppage . Vaughn took the 2nd, 10-2, and may have eeked out the 3rd, 7-6.Middleton dominated the last minute of the 4th, staggering Bean with a wicked hook. His jab and hook were sparkling as he rallied to pull it out, 17-12! Vaughn blasted a big hook home late in the 5th to steal that round, 10-6. Larry connected on another jarring hook early in the 6th, then his cut was reopened, causing another look. The fight resumed, and Bean landed a jab, and the cut worsened . The ref halted the action again, and this time the doctor, Richard Chamberlain, had seen enough. Bean won what was an evenly-contested contest by a TKO on cuts at 2:22 of the 6th! Middleton’s corner bemoaned the stoppage, but it goes into the books, ending any hope of a Best of Baltimore Middleton-Chaplin match.![]() |

Stupendous 6s Round 1 Fight 24
Bruce Woodcock vs. Duncan Dokiwari – The Nigerian landed a smashing uppercut early on, and Woodcock was hurt, and cut outside his right eye, to boot
. Bruce covered up, evading any further damage, but Dokiwari had drawn first blood, literally, 6-3.Duncan opened the 2nd with another stunning uppercut, and the cut was reopened ! His hook kept finding a home and he built a nice lead, winning 14-6, Woodcock making it respectable with a spot-on uppercut of his own just before the bell!Dokiwari targeted the eye and reopened the cut early in the 3rd . He landed a solid right hook, but Woodcock answered with one of his own. Bruce owned the last minute, his crosses and combinations finding a ready target, and he pulled away for a needed 13-8 round, his corner anxious to work on that cut!Desperate, Bruce came out swinging in the 4th, figuring the best defense for his eye was a good offense . He ripped a savage combination home to start the round, then a laser left. Duncan covered up, and Bruce penetrated with a gnarly hook! Teeing off, he blasted 2 major uppercuts home, and Dokiwari was staggered ! After a few lighter uppercuts, he uncorked a dazzling cross, and the referee had seen enough. With the score 28-0, a helpless and hapless Dokiwari was helped back to his corner, Bruce Woodcock winning by a TKO at 1:48 of the 4th! |

Stupendous 6s Round 1 Fight 25
Ted Lowry vs. Joe Baksi – Tiger Ted looked more like a little puddy-cat
, losing the 2nd, 13-4, Baksi belting him with crosses, after possibly dropping the 1st, 8-7. Ted won a scintillating 3rd, 4-0, Joe showing his mastery of the clinch ! Ted tapped his was to a rousing 6-4 4th! Oh, the fan excitement !Baksi landed a big hook that may have won him the 5th, 8-7. Lowry survived a savage left in the 6th, landing crosses and combinations to tap out a 9-6 advantage! He looked good in the 7th, landing a series of combinations, ruling the last minute to triumph, 12-8. He had what looked to be a nice lead. They fought a spirited 8th. Lowry was more active, slipping crosses and combinations home. Baksi fired a sharp hook to the midsection, later a searing straight right, and sealed the round with a bazooka hook at the end, 15-11. Dead-tired, he belted Ted with a combination to start the 9th, then caught him with a straight right! He landed some hooks and missed on a lot, but ruled, 12-4. Lowry came out covering up in the 10th, and evaded all of Baksi’s bombs, landing some crisp counters to pull out this crucial round, 8-2. I had Lowry winning, 97-96. The judges all scored it 96-94, for, the winner by a unanimous decision,…Ted Lowry! |

Stupendous 6s Round 1 Fight 26
Herbie Hide vs. Billy Daniels – Herbie rocked Billy with a wicked combination just after the bell sounded. He landed a solid straight right and a sizzling uppercut as well. Daniels traded uppercuts with him and scored some points as well. Herbie ended up well ahead, 17-6, on the strength of his power punches, but his left eye was beginning to swell, as Daniels targeted it
.The Dancing Destroyer landed a sweet hook in the 2nd, but Billy was landing as well, and frequently. Among his 47 punches that found their target were 16 crosses & 13 jabs. Billy won, 16-10, and Hide’s eye was now an ugly swollen mess ! Herbie’s hooks were more than a match for Billy’s crosses in the first minute of the 3rd, as he built a nice 10-5 lead. But Billy hurt Hide with a nasty left, and Herbie tried to cover up. Daniels boxed nicely, landing 38 times in all, rallying for a 16-12 round that had the fans on their feet! Hide’s vision was now impaired, as his eye was half-shut. Daniels stunned Hide with a whistling hook early in the 4th, then floored him with a savage uppercut ! Herbie bounced back up at the count of 4, but ran into a Daniels buzzsaw! Daniels teed off, landing 73 times, 23 being jabs & 18 crosses, as he used Hide as a punching bag ! Herbie could barely see, and had no success in evading Billy, and he stood there, helpless and hapless. Daniels fired the last of his 73 punches, a thundering shot to the midsection, and Herbie fell as the bell sounded. This time, he wisely stayed down, and Billy Daniels showed surprising power, winning by a KO at 3:00 of the 4th! He had landed at a 63% clip and outlanded his game opponent, 179-93. He administered a savage beating, taking advantage of that swollen eye. |

Stupendous 6s Round 1 Fight 27
Joe Mesi vs. Natie Brown – Natie’s boxing skills may have pulled out an 8-7 first, as he landed frequently to offset a huge Mesi cross. Natie had a nice lead in the 2nd, but Mesi rallied in the last minute, connecting on a series of crosses to pull the round out, 10-6. Joe got the 3rd off to a booming start, landing a laser left than staggered Brown to begin the action! Joe followed up with a right to the top of Natie’s head, and Brown was in serious trouble! Mesi unloaded with a hook and jarring right, and Brown’s right eye was swelling quickly! Pouring it on, Mesi ripped hooks home, and almost floored the game Brown with an uppercut at the bell, which sealed a 27-2 massacre ! Joe stalked Natie in the 4th, landing a hard right and a dazzling combination. Natie’s eye was worse, but he fought back, landing some late combinations to make the round respectable, 14-8. But now his left eye was swelling, as well! The 5th was a slaughter, Mesi landing 45 times as he pounded his foe from pillar to post. His hooks landed early and often, two rocking Brown, and an uppercut caused Natie’s legs to buckle! Somehow he stayed upright, but was on the short end of a 26-4 score, and his left eye was now half-closed !It had been all-Mesi to this point, but a gallant Brown came out, dead-tired, taking the fight to Joe early in the 6th. But Mesi saw an opening and ripped a combination home, focusing on Brown’s left eye, and the eye was now all but shut! Joe hooked and jabbed his way to an easy 12-6 round, and there seemed no way for Brown to continue! His corner was unskilled at reducing swelling , and their lack of skill put him in jeopardy of having the fight stopped!Mesi opened with an early lead in the 7th, and many booed when he was warned for an intentional head butt! The fight was stopped briefly to check Brown’s swelling, but he successfully pleaded his case. A minute later, he was rocked by a cross he never saw, and the fight was halted again . This time, the eye closed, the doctor called a halt, giving Joe Mesi a TKO at 2:57 of the 7th. He had been ahead, 17-2, and had administered a terrible beating upon poor Natie, whose eye was the worst I’d seen to date. There could be permanent damage . Mesi had been a destroyer, putting Brown through a meat-grinder, his eye and face now resembling a chunk of souse! |

Stupendous 6s Round 1 Fight 28
Leroy Jones (level 5) (3-2-1 1) vs. Phil Jackson – Jackson opened nicely, but then was cut over the right eye by a Jones jab, and Leroy turned the round around, 9-5, moving nicely and landing a sweet uppercut. Jackson landed a sharp hook in the 2nd, but Jones was jabbing, rallying in the last minute, landing 14 jabs in all to steal the round, 11-8.
The 3rd round was a dull, defensive gem. Jackson got a ripping hook home late in the round to cinch it, 8-4. The Enforcer opened the 4th with a shot that surprised Jonesey, who dropped to the canvas ! Leroy was back up at the count of 4, choosing to cover up. Jackson kept attacking, slipping a left home that cut Jones inside the right eye! The fight was halted, and Jackson was awarded a TKO on cuts at 1:39 of the 4th. The Jones camp was incensed![]() , believing they could control and stop the bleeding, but the decision goes into the books. Both men landed 69 punches, at the same efficiency level. It was a bad break for Leroy Jones, as another level 5 fighter was sent home! |

Stupendous 6s Round 1 Fight 29
Francesco Damiani vs. Jess Willard – Willard came in obese, though he said he was just bulking up (maybe like Butterbean)
. After a slow first minute, Damiani connected with a nice uppercut, then with an even better one, and Jess was in trouble. Willard was landing some uppercuts of his own, but none with the explosive power his opponent displayed! Francesco smashed another uppercut home, and Willard’s left eye was swelling! A vicious combination caused him to cover up, and Damiani had made an emphatic statement in a 19-9 round! They clinched and shuffled through a fruitless 1st minute of the 2nd, then Francesco landed a lightning hook, and Big Jess crashed to the canvas . He was up at the count of 8, but eminently hittable. Damiani kept landing hooks, the last of which staggered Jess, who barely survived a 19-2 beating. Willard’s left eye was worse, and his right was swelling, to boot!In a somnambulistic 3rd , Damiani might have pulled it out, 4-3. Willard landed the first telling blow of the 4th, a hard cross. Damiani notted the score at 9-9 at the two minute mark with a hellacious hook to Jess’ ample midriff. In the last minute, Damiani poured it on, landing a huge hook and many other punches, pulling away, 21-9!An exhausted Willard slammed a body shot home early in the 5th, and it was Francesco’s turn to drop ! He was up at the count of 7, covering up, and Jess tried to end it. He landed some punches, but many were either slipped or blocked. Still, Jess won a badly-needed round, 14-4! Damiani foiled any comeback plans in the 6th, landing a sweet double hook, then a monster cross. He had a point deducted for low blows (his second warning), but still scored a whitewash, 12-0.Jeff opened the 7th with another big cross. Damiani clinched, recovered, then evened the score 4-4 at the two minute mark with a gnarly hook. Willard’s conditioning came into play, as Damiani absolutely dominated the last minute, landing a cranium-crusher and a rocket uppercut, hurting Jess, whose eyes were both becoming a mess. It went into the books as a 19-4 round, and Willard’s hopes had to be flagging. When Francesco plastered the onrushing Willard with a hook to start the 8th, it looked to be all over. Jess remained upright long enough to be tagged by a jarring uppercut, and he took his second trip to the canvas ! Up at the count of 3, he was a punching bag, and a Damiani uppercut sent him into the ropes. His eyes half-shut, Jess somehow lashed out, catching Francesco with a hook and then a titanic uppercut of his won. The round ended before he could bomb away at a hurt Damiani, but he at least had made the round respectable, 20-8!Jess landed a sharp cross to open the 9th, and went for the kill. Damiani went defensive, slipping, ducking and blocking, and Jess won the round, 7-2, but missed a big chance to inflict some damage! Damiani was tired coming out for the 10th, but with what seemed like a big lead. He led through the first 2 minutes, a solid combination his main blow, but Willard rallied briefly with a straight right! Big Jess threw a haymaker, but Damiani stepped inside and belted him with another shot to the belly, and Jess crumbled and fell just as the bell sounded. He was back on his feet at the count of 7, his eyes showing the beating he had absorbed. Damiani had landed twice as many punches, and there was little suspense in the judges’ decision, a 95-91, 94-91 & 95-90 unanimous decision for Damiani! Fred Willard might have been a better opponent! |

Stupendous 6s Round 1 Fight 30
Tex Cobb vs. James Braddock – Crimson liked Tex Cobb, predicting he’d go to the Elite 8. Infinity saw Braddock as the winner of this tourney
. Tex landed a mighty uppercut in the final seconds of Round 1 to salvage a 6-6 tie. They traded leather in an active 2nd. Tex was hooking effectively, but Jim landed 48 times, hooks and jabs primarily, to pull out the round, 17-11. Braddock eaked by in an 8-5 3rd, though he missed his burly target a lot!It was even for the first two minutes of the 4th, Tex having connected with a sizzling cross, but Jim landed a number of lighter crosses to take it, 10-6. Braddock built the big lead in the 5th, absorbing a heavy combination while so doing, but Tex roared back in the last minute, helped by a gonzo hook . He lost on scoring, 12-11, but his late rally may have stolen the round with the judges. Braddock seemed to be ahead at this juncture, but not necessarily by much. The 6th was another close one, Braddock’s boxing skills possibly pulling it out, 9-7, as he landed 24 times. Jim dominated the 7th, 17-6, firing crisp crosses and jabs, landing 48 times, and Tex’s left eye was beginning to swell from the cumulative punches ! Dead-tired, Tex made his last stand in the 8th (hopefully not like Custer’s) . He landed a thunderous hook, then two more powerful rights, and Braddock was now tired and his left eye was swelling! Cobb went for the KO, but Braddock slowed him down with a low blow, earning a warning, and the round ended, Tex winning, 16-4, but Braddock still on his feet!Cobb threw punches from every angle to start the 9th, a number of them landing. The Cinderella Man’s swelling was worse, but he stepped up and inside Tex’s bombs, countering nicely, cutting Tex inside his mouth and worsening his swelling. In the end, Braddock prevailed, 11-5. Braddock covered up for the 10th, and Tex launched bomb after bomb, but Jim evaded them all, countering a bit and winning, maybe, 4-0. Braddock hadn’t landed any power shots, but he still was effective. I had him winning, 98-94. The judges scored the bout 98-92, 96-95 & 99-92, a unanimous decision for…Jim Braddock! Billy Graham had it the closest, and might need a trip to the optometrist ! So Braddock begins his quest for glory. Tex had to settle for being gory. Like Custer, it was his Last Stand!![]() ![]() |

Stupendous 6s Round 1 Fight 31
Amos Lincoln (level 5) (4-2 4) vs. Fres Oquendo – They alternated hard shots in a crowd-pleasing opener
. Lincoln’s piston-driven hook dazed Fres briefly, and Amos poured enough other punches in to take command, 13-8. Fast Fres was just that in the 2nd, keeping Amos at bay and sealing the round with a sweet straight right, 9-6. Lincoln landed 24 times in the 3rd, Fres got in a gonzo right, but Amos may have pulled it out, 9-8.Lincoln stepped inside for the 4th, and manhandled Oquendo. He rocked him with a hook and a jarring combination, landing 41 times in all, his crosses beating a rat-a-tat rhythm, carving out a huge 18-2 round! Amos stayed inside in the 5th, but Fres ducked and slipped nicely in the first minute. Lincoln was warned for holding and hitting, then started landing his hooks and crosses. 41 times he found his target, and Fres had his left eye swelling up . Looking exhausted, he did get a straight right in to minimize the pain, but was on the south side of a 15-6 score!Oquendo needed a round, and bounced back in the 6th. Lincoln landed 26 times, but Fres was answering, and may have pulled it out, 11-9, with a big uppercut at the bell! Fres started fast in the 7th, but Lincoln started to find the range with crosses and combinations. A hellacious cross slowed Fres down, and his swelling was getting worse. Amos staggered him with a searing combination , then just punched away, landing 41 times, to run away with the round, 23-10. Oquendo’s eye was now half-shut. The gallant Puerto Rican tried to rally in the 8th, but was floored by a wicked combination . Up at the count of 6, he covered up and avoided further damage, but another round had slipped away, 11-2. Fres got a crisp cross in to take the 9th, 8-4, but it seemed like too little, too late!Amos fired a no-see-em hook to open the 10th. Fres never saw it , and dropped for a 3 count . Fres tried to cover up, but Lincoln ripped through his defenses with a savage combination and Fres flopped! Game, he was somehow up at the count of 9, but on Bink Street ! Amos measured him, rocking him into the ropes with a sonic cross, then dropping him for the third time with another 5 punch combination! Oquendo struggled mightily and made it up at the count of 8. The round ended, a cakewalk for Lincoln, 29-3, and the fans cheered Lincoln for his slugging and Oquendo for his guttiness.Amos had landed 269 times and had the 4 KDs, so the decision was a foregone conclusion, a 97-89, 95-91 & 97-89 easy win for Amos Lincoln. Another Level 5 fighter had posted a very impressive showing! |

Stupendous 6s Round 1 Fight 32
Johnny Risko (level 5) (3-1) vs. George Chaplin – Infinity had Risko, the Cleveland Rubber Man, going to the Sweet 16!. But it was Chaplin, the favorite in heart of PWillisTheMan
, who got off to the start, using a jolting uppercut to hurt Risko and then landing effectively for a 10-6 round. George ripped a right home in the 2nd to take the lead, but Risko rallied in the last minute with a series of jabs to tie it, 10-10. Johnny was dazzling in the 3rd & 4th. He dominated the 3rd, 14-2, landing 40 times, often using his uppercut. The 4th went 15-5, as he drilled 41 punches in, 12 sharp jabs! When he rallied in the last minute of the 5th to possibly take it, 6-4, and then led in a nip-and-tuck 6th, 7-6, things seemed to be going his way. But Chaplin rallied for an 11-4 7th, a hard straight right his most effective blow among 24 punches landed. George uncharacteristically went for the power shots in the 8th. He fired off two stunning uppercuts in the first minute, and Risko was rubber-legged ! Johnny got a few counters in, but Chaplin was landing often, his uppercuts almost always scoring. He landed a nasty uppercut that staggered Johnny, but the round ended before he could do more damage. Still, he’d won big-time, 18-4, and was back in the hunt! The 9th was a defensive affair, Chaplin possibly getting the nod, 7-6, but he looked exhausted at round’s end! Risko covered up coming out for the 10th, and, after a slow start, Chaplin was able to penetrate, landing 29 times, one a power uppercut that set up a string of crosses. George won it, 13-4, and had a great fight from Round 7 on. I had Chaplin the winner, 97-96, and the color commentator had him as well, 96-95. The judges scored it 96-94 Chaplin, 95-95 & 96-94 Risko, so the fight was a draw! ![]() Johnny had slightly outlanded George, 224-200, but the power shots were all Chaplin! A number of the fans booed the decision, but they’d fight again, just like the other Baltimorean, Larry Middleton. Hopefully Chaplin wouldn’t share Middleton’s fate! |

Stupendous 6s Round 1 Fight 32, Risko-Chaplin Part 2
They dueled to a dead-heat 9-9 1st, trading punches. The first 2 minutes of the 2nd continued this pattern, then Chaplin took over in the last minute for a 15-9 round. He landed 15 hooks & 14 jabs among his 47 total punches landed, but Risko was no slouch himself. Johnny rallied in the 3rd, countering well, winning handily, 12-5. He boxed a beautiful 4th, landing 41 times, one a jarring straight right, and waxed Chaplin, 16-7. George’s right eye was beginning to swell from the pinpoint punches!
![]() Chaplin rebounded in the 5th, fighting defensively, good enough for an 8-4 round. It seemed dead even at this point. Risko might have taken a slow 6th, 6-4, as Chaplin eye got worse. Johnny clearly took the 7th, 15-6, peppering George with uppercuts and jabs, and Chappy’s eye was getting worse . It was even-Steven for 2 minutes in the 8th, then Chaplin went on a tear, throwing jabs and crisp crosses to pull away, 17-7, as he connected 48 times! It was still extremely close!George landed a booming hook in the 9th, while Risko was landing some good counterpunches. Johnny’s rally was good enough to score more points, 10-7. Once again, Risko came out covering up in the 10th. This time, a tired Chaplin couldn’t catch him, as Risko clinched and blocked. Theoretically, Risko may have won this round, 2-0. A die-hard Chaplin fan, I had Risko, who outlanded George, 258-218, winning by a slight margin ![]() . The judges scored it 98-93, 96-94 & 96-94, a unanimous decision for…Johnny Risko! Another Level 5 fighter marches on. The Middleton-Chaplin matchup for bragging rights in Baltimore never materialized, though maybe they’ll meet in the Tanked Bowl?![]() |

Stupendous 6s Round 2 Fight 1
Hubert Hilton (level 5) (5-2-1 1) vs. Johnny Arthur (1-0 1) – Hilton had won a split decision over Gerald Griffith, while Arthur had stopped Blue Lewis in the 6th, a bout in which he had been losing. Johnny came in heavy, dismissing Hilton’s chances as a Level 5 fighter
.Johnny boxed nicely in the 1st, countering effectively and building up a big lead. A huge Hilton hook just before the bell marred his shutout bid, 12-5. They traded punches, Hilton’s hook’s and Arthur’s crosses, in an 11-10 round that Hubie might have pulled out. It was the same type of round in the 3rd, Arthur landing one crisp cross, Hilton coming back with two sharp hooks, one at round’s end, to possibly take it, 12-10! Hube rushed out to start the 4th and tagged Johnny with a herculean hook, and Johnny dropped ! He was back up at 7, covering up, and he did that effectively, coming back with a few nice counters. A frustrated Hilton stepped back, regained his composure after firing and missing, and caught Arthur with a wicked 5 punch combination ! |
