Your picks put you at odds with Bear, who favors Godfrey!

Boxing Day Round 1 Fight 1 – Uzcudun/Langford

Langford blasted away at the Basque Woodchopper from the opening bell. He landed a titanic uppercut, and soon after a crippling hook to the ribs! Indeed, Paolino looked like he’d hurt his ribs, as he grimaced and covered up. Sam switched his attack back to the head after a few unsuccessful attempts at penetrating Uzcudun’s turtle defense. Sam landed a sweet hook, and Uzcudun’s left eye was swelling. Landing 18 hooks in all, Langford fired a straight right just before the bell, decimating poor Paolino, 24-2!

Langford uncharacteristically clinched early and often in the 2nd. Uzcudun, still in pain but a trooper to the end, landed a hard right and won a low-scoring affair, 6-2. They traded leather in the 3rd, Sam landing 11 hooks & 10 crosses, but Paolino connecting with a massive uppercut and crisp cross. Uzcudun took the round, 15-11, but his eye was swollen even more.

They warred again in the 4th, having several good exchanges. Paolino connected on a good combination, but Sam was hooking often and with authority! He whistled a sweet hook home at round’s end, sealing the round, 15-10, and making Uzcudun’s eye worse.

The 5th was classic, two warriors wowing the crowd with their back-and-forth! Sam answered a hard cross with one of his own, then built a lead at the two minute mark with a thundering cross. Uzcudun was protecting his ribs, but his eye was paying the price. He rallied in the last minute with a jarring hook and uppercut. Sam, at the bell, landed a crushing uppercut, once again stealing a round, 21-16, in the last seconds!

It was amazing how well Uzcudun had fought, considering his rib injury, in what was still a close fight! Langford landed two big bombs in the 6th, a shot to the head and a dazzling right. Paolino, looking exhausted, rallied with a wicked hook to the body just before the bell, and now it was Langford clutching his side! But it was too little, too late, and Sam escaped the winner, 13-6!

The Uzcudun Express slowed to a near halt in the 7th. Sam poured it on, connecting 50 times, and Paolino’s eye was in the red danger zone! Apparently recovered from the shot he took the prior round, Sam staggered the big Basque with a sizzling combination, winning going away, 21-2!

They were content to lean on each other for most of the 8th, then Sam blasted a left to the midsection, and Paolino doubled over. Sam caught him with a hard right, but the bell saved Uzcudun from further punishment. It was another round for Langford, 10-4.

Langford rode two super hooks to a big lead in the 9th. Paolino rallied with a hammering uppercut, but it was yet another round for Sam, 15-8. Uzcudun went for broke in the 10th, but his vision was hampered by the swelling. Sam dodged for a minute, then launched a thundering hook, and the big Basque toppled to the canvas! He was up at the count of 6, but hurt, and cut under his right eye. Sam feinted with a hook and threw a colossal cross, and Paolino was down again! He staggered to his feet at the count of 7, courageously waving Sam to bring it on. Sam missed with a few shots as he went head-hunting, then threw a pulverizing hook to the ribs, and this proved too much for the valiant Basque! Paolino went down, clutching his side, in obvious pain. The crowd sat in silence as the warrior got to one knee, but could go no further! He was counted out, then Langford helped him to his feet and back to his corner.

Sam Langford won via a KO at 2:46 of the 10th, achieving what no other before had done with the knockout. The crowd cheered both men. Uzcudun had fought on bravely after sustaining the 1st round injury to his ribs (several were broken), and Langford had used his savvy and power to topple an unstoppable tree! At least this one day, the hook was mightier than the ribs!

Boxing Day Round 1 Fight 2 – Miske/Wills

Billy caught a hard hook from Harry, then came back to take the opener, 12-6, a hard hook and right providing the margin of victory. Wills rebounded with a 13-2 2nd, his combination working effectively. He landed a hard cross to start the 3rd, and a sharp combination to end it. The last was enough to hold off Miske, 12-9, who’d rallied with a sweet hook.

Billy landed 30 times in an active 4th. Unfortunately (for him), Harry connected 42 times, a solid combination giving him a 21-11 round. Billy got on his bicycle and boxed a beautiful 5th, reaching Wills with his crosses, accumulating a 12-3 round.

Wills reasserted himself in the 6th, punching out a 12-2 advantage as Billy was tiring and missing with his punches. Both men rested in the 7th, Wills possibly claiming the round with a late shot to the head, 8-6. He seemed to be well ahead on points.

Miske threw caution to the winds in the 8th, slowing Harry down with two hard hooks. He staggered Harry with a cross, and tagged him with a good combination. Harry’s legs were wobbling, but he survived the 21-5 onslaught!

That was Billy’s last hurrah. Wills, fighting cautiously, landed enough counters to notch a 10-10 9th, then covered up and countered nicely in a 15-5 finale. Wills had landed more, 224-199, and he got a 97-93, 96-94 & 97-93 unanimous decision! So far Infinity has been spot on in his predictions!

Boxing Day Round 1 Fight 3 – Heeney/Jeannette

Joe jumped to an early lead. After a close 7-4 opening round, his crosses, hooks and combinations led him to dominate the next 3 rounds, 11-0, 15-4 & 10-4. Heeney may have stolen the 5th, 8-7, as he landed a sweet hook. Jeannette was well up at the turn.

They had a good 6th, the exchanges bringing the crowd to its feet! Heeney landed 34 times, Jeannette 36, but his hooks and uppercuts led the way to a 13-10 round. He won the 7th, 14-6, but had a point deducted for an unnecessary low blow. Joe was pounding an exhausted Heeney in the 8th, but got careless and paid the price, as a jagged combination floored him for a 6 count! Tom hurt a covering up Jeannette with an uppercut, but couldn’t put him away, though he won big time, 17-6. It might be too little, too late!

And it was, for a chastened Jeannette boxed brilliantly in a 15-2 9th, relying on his uppercuts and jabs, evading Heeney’s attempted bombs. The 10th was a desultory 5-4 affair. The ending was a fairly easy UD, 97-92, for Joe Jeannette. He had outboxed Heeney almost every round, landing over 100 more punches.

Boxing Day Round 1 Fight 4 – McVey/Godfrey

Infinity had McVey, Bear Godfrey. Which of these experts would prove to be right? McVey displayed good ring movement in the first 2 rounds, but Godfrey landed the harder punches, and took them, 8-4 & 10-4. A wicked shot to the ribs had Sam in trouble in the 2nd. Round 3 was a desultory 7-6 affair, and Godfrey had more points and displayed more ring presence.

McVey rallied with a dominating 16-3 4th, as he poured home 41 punches, mostly jabs & hooks. The next 2 rounds were similar, as he pounded George, 16-4 & 21-3! Landing 45 times in each round, a booming hook had George wobbly in the 6th. In the 7th, he opened with a withering straight right, then floored Godfrey with a colossal hook. George was up at the count of 8, but only just, and tried to cover as Sam knocked him from pillar to post. At round’s end, 24-0, Godfrey was barely upright!

McVey had seized control of the fight with this blistering four round assault. Godfrey was content to clinch and rest in the 8th. He landed one hard cross, but the round ended deadlocked, 4-4. George rallied in the 9th, a do or die round. He landed a laser right to the midsection, and scored with other blows, even though he missed frequently as well. Sam came back in the last minute, but Godfrey had pulled it out, 12-6.

It all came down to the last round, and McVey chose to cover up. Alas, Godfrey came out slugging, and it was like the first quarter of the Baltimore Ravens – New England Patriots game, as he landed a hard hook and then scored a flash knockdown, good for a 3 count, with a combination that caught Sam off-balance. The round ended, 16-4 for Godfrey, and the knockdown could have implications in the final scoring!

McVey was angry with himself. He outlanded George, 268-115, with a KD of his own. I had it a draw, 95-95, in a fight McVey let slip through his fingers! The judges scored it 95-93 Godfrey, 94-94 and 95-94,…a majority decision for George Godfrey! Infinity was heartbroken, not to mention a bit angry. Bear was jubilant, just like the Ravens after their upset of mighty New England!

Sounding just like Mickey from the Rocky movies, McVey's manager could be heard shouting "We was robbed! My man beat the bum!" as McVey and his retinue left the arena. A rematch is in order!
