Thanksgiving Tournament of the Turkeys
This is my first thread, and, as it involves a universe of heavyweight tomato cans, and a limited one at that, it’ll probably be of interest only to a few viewers.
I have been doing some surfing on Boxrec, and found a number of legitimate tomato cans. I looked at Bear’s Parade of the Tomato Cans thread, and found some viable tomato cans, and found others on posts by Chris Conn, Rocco and others. Soon, I hope to post some of my non-duplicative finds on Bear’s thread. In any event, I put all of my heavyweight level 1 boxers into a separate database on Thanksgiving morn, found I had 130 boxers, and decided it would be appropriate to have a Tournament of the Turkeys with this esteemed body of fighters, to see who the top level 1 fighter is (and, as an old board gamer, I’ll be rooting for Mel Turnbow ). 130 is just over the magical 128 number, but I’ll find a way (draws, box-offs) to get things to the right multiple of 2. The first two sets of matches are being held at the Mohegan Casino in Connecticut, then the venue may change to Massachusetts. The first two sets will be 8 round fights, then probably going up to 10 rounds (can a tomato can last 10 rounds?). The winner, in addition to the prestigious Campbell’s TC Belt and a frozen turkey and a dozen cases of Campbell’s finest, will get to challenge boxers in the next higher flights such as Chuck Wepner or James J. Beattie. And the winner must grant Mr. Turnbow a shot at the title. The losers get to feed at the turkey buffet offered at each venue. Will football players who masqueraded as boxers such as Mark Gastineau or Too-Tall Jones win the belt? Doubtful. Will Mel Turnbow reign supreme? Doubtful, but I’ll be pulling for him. Will Dangerous Danny Wofford emerge triumphant? I’m sure he’ll have his fan contingent rooting for him. And I have to root for my namesake, Sam O’Leary, but only after Mel. So let the games begin! Round 1 Matchups to follow. |

Another ALF joke relating to Sam Shumway.
Sam Shumway 1939-1947 Global ID 35711sexmaledivisionheavyweightnationality United States residenceWebster, Massachusetts, United Stateswon 38 (KO 18) + lost 59 (KO 53) + drawn 4 = 101 I discovered Sam in a post war Ring Record Book and found that his record on Boxrec was even more deplorable. Still he was a headliner in his hometown of Webster, MA and was on the fight card there when a new venue opened. Notched a win vs. Tiger Ted Lowry. Lowry described him as having an agressive crowd pleasing style. Bear

The Alf picture is a hoot! I got the Sam Shumway file from Bear, and thank him again for the history. I now regret that Sam's matched up against another Sam, Sam O'Leary, who has a great last name, in the battle of the Sams!
I enjoyed Alf for a while, but then he did wear a bit thin. And, if I recall corectly, he liked to eat cats, and i've got my reindeer cats, who are near and dear to me, even though one of them scratched me pretty badly this past weekend, so I can't stay an Alf fan, even with many beers. The tournament commences shortly! |

Wow! There's been a lot of interest so far, much more than I anticipated (yay) and the contestants have been quick to belly up to the buffet in anticipation of their first fights! Thunder and I share a nostalgic liking for Mel Turnbow, and I hope he doesn't go down in the first match (hope springs eternal but reality often brings us back down to Earth)!
I'm thrilled to see that some of the others also have a following, and hope I can get Danny Wofford away from the buffet so that he doesn't forfeit his fight! Danny has threatened to brain Butterbean for encroaching on his platter. The crowd is clamoring for action, so this tournament is about to commence! Let the best turkey, oops, man, win!!! |
