Heavyweights Universe. 60's -> Now in 1974

I have been trying a lot of universes but this i really have sticked with. I am now in the ninth year. I started in 1960 with fighters debuting from 1956 to 1960. Since then i have played up to 1969 where i am now.

I have three groups:

Begin. Real fighters and Tc's at beginning, plus the worst other fighters around.

Club. The up and coming fighters at pre-prime, plus some veterans and tc's

Top. All the fighters right under the best.

World. The top 10, i arrange fights for these fighters.

If a fighter debuts at age above 32 he will debut at pre-prime automatically. If he has participated in the olympics, he will debut at Prime.

If a fighter debuts at age above 27 he will normally debut at beginning. If he has participated in the olympics he will debut at pre-prime.

All fighters at age 26 or lower will debut at beginning no matter what..

BTW: Check out the olympic amateur thread, i've just finished the 1972 olympics.

I use all of the four World Championships belts plus some regional and national titles that i don't put very much work in.

Here are the top fighters at this point (updated February 11, 2008/in universe July, 1974):

#1 Muhammad Ali 46-3 (38), WBA/WBO, RING Champion.

This is the man everyone wants to meet. He became champ after 18 fights, and made 16 succesful title defences from 1962 to 1968, before he was beaten by Joe Frazier in the second fight between the two by 3rd round TKO. 1 year and 4 months later, he got his revenge when he KO'ed Frazier in the 8th round of what was perhaps the best fight the world had and has ever seen. Frazier beat Ali in 1971, again by 3rd round KO, forcing Ali into temporary retirement. After one and a half year off, he returned to fight Frazier again, and another wild fight ended in a 10th round TKO victory for Frazier. He continued his comeback, and in 1973 he shocked the world, in winning a 6th round TKO against George Foreman, who had battered Frazier in 4 rounds.

Next fight: WBA/WBC/WBO/IBF Unification bout against Ken Norton at MSG on September 14th.

#2 Joe Frazier 34-4 (33)

Frazier started his career in frightening way, going 20-0, all by knockout, from 1965 to 1967. He received his title shot in 1968 against Muhammad Ali, but lost due to a cut in the 5th. He got his rematch only 4 months later, and shocked everyone, by TKO'ing Ali in the 3rd round. He gave Ali his rematch in 1969, and lost the most memorable bout ever, by 8th round knockout. That fight seemed to take a lot out of him, as he shockingly lost to fairly unknown Leotis Martin in 1970, by 6th round TKO. He found himself again, KO'ing Ali in 3 only 7 monhts later. That started a Frazier dominance - defeating the best of the best, including Ali once more, Leotis Martin in the rematch and Ken Norton - all by knockout. He gave up and coming Foreman a shot. Frazier took a beating. He was defenseless when the referee stopped the fight in the 4th round.

Next fight: Tune up bout against Joe Bugner on August 22nd.

#3 George Foreman 27-1 (27)

Foreman has been a scary man all through his almost 5 year long career. He got his title shot at 24-0, all knockouts and 11 in the 1st round, against fellow undefeated Earnie Shavers for the vacant WBA title. After a very entertaining fight, Foreman KO'ed him in the 8th round. He has never gone longer than the 8th round. He then fought, and demolished Joe Frazier in 4 rounds. He decided to defend against Muhammad Ali, and the general thinking was that even 'The Greatest' wouldn't stand a chance against this monster of a power puncher. They were wrong. Ali took Foremans best shots, and opened cut from his left eyelid and in the 6th round, it became too bad for him to continue. Ali was the winner by 6th round TKO in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Next fight: TBD

#4 Ken Norton 30-2 (26), WBC/IBF Champion.

Ken Norton build up a 16-0 record before stupidly losing against Chuck Wepner by 10th round disqualification. He slowed down in activity for a while, before coming back winning a rematch with Chuck Wepner and pounding the highly regarded slugger Dave Zyglewicz. He then got a shot at Joe Frazier, but like with many others, was brutally beaten. Frazier won a 5th round knockout. This time, he got right back on the horse, defeating Gregorio Peralta and Al Lewis to become the WBC and IBF champion. He has defended the title three times and can now look forward to fighting Muhammad Ali.

Next fight: WBA/WBC/WBO/IBF Unification bout against Muhammad Ali at MSG on September 14th.

#5 Earnie Shavers 26-1 (22), NABF champion

Shavers went 22-0, with 20 knockouts from 1969 to 1972. He then beat Al Jones by decision in order to gain a shot at fighting George Foreman for the vacant WBA title. In a brutal and entertaining fight, he was KO'ed in the 8th round. He fought again 7 months later, and defeated Al Jones to become NABF champion.

Next fight: IBO tourney quarterfinal against Larry Duncan on October 26th.

#6 Al Jones 34-6 (8)

Jones was never highlighted as a huge prospect, he fought and beat some decent fighters though, sporting a 17-0 record before losing by split decision to Leotis Martin. He continued being active, winning 4 fights in a row before defeating Leotis Martin in the rematch by split decision in 1968, not even a year later, in order to become IBF champion in stunning fashion, as he beat the man who beat Frazier. In his first defence against Jerry Quarry, he was easily beaten by decision. He then fought George Chuvalo for the NABF title, and lost by split decision. One year later, he defeated Jerry Quarry by majority decision, this time for the USBA and NABF titles. He fought Jerry Quarry one last time, and beat him by 4th round TKO in what was the beginning of the end for Quarry. He has beaten George Chuvalo twice since then and lost twice to Earnie Shavers.

Next fight: Boone Kirkman at MSG on the undercard of Ali vs Norton, September 14th.

#7 Al Lewis 30-4-2 (17)

Al Lewis was another heavyweight who went through his early years, fairly unnoticed, piling up a record of 17-0-2 before losing to Albert Westphal by 2nd round knockout. He came back better than ever, winning 8 in a row, before getting his shot at IBF champ Al Jones. Lewis won due to a cut in the 9th round. He won his first two defences by 1st round KO against uncompetative opposition. He tried to unify his titles against Ken Norton in December 1972, but came up short.

Nect fight: TBD

#8 Dave Zyglewicz 34-8 (24)

Dave Zyglewicz was 10-0 before losing to Buster Mathis by majority decision. He got on a nice winning streak, building a record of 22-1, and when he got his title shot against Jerry Quarry, he lost by unanimous decision. He has managed to stick around, defeating fighters such as Gregorio Peralta, Chuck Wepner, Leotis Martin and Oscar Bonavena, but seems to come up short when he steps it up against the likes of Ken Norton, George Foreman, Muhammad Ali and Joe Bugner.

Next fight: TBD

#9 Jimmy Young 26-2 (10)

Young was looking like the new Ali, early in his career, outboxing fighters like Mani Vaka, Buster Mathis and Pedro Agosto. He got his shot at Joe Frazier and delivered a fantastic perfomance. Young fought amazingly, at times outboxing the champion and even knocking him down in the 10th. He took Frazier further than no man, except Ali, had ever done before. He had a small lead on the scorecards going into the 13th round, where Frazier found his killer instinct knocking Young down three times in the round, and the 3KD rule was in effect making it a TKO 13 for Joe Frazier. He fought again six months later, beating first Boone Kirkman then Jerry Quarry in order to get a rematch with Joe Frazier who had just been battered by George Foreman. He couldn't resist this time, but still gave Frazier a tough time before being TKO'ed in the 10th round.

Next fight: IBO tourney quarterfinal against Armando Zanini on November 2nd.

#10 Joe Bugner 26-7 (17)

Bugner started off his career in odd fashion, looking fantastic at time, and bored at times, building a 15-6 record. He then seemed to find his motivation, winning 11 in a row against top competition, winning the EBU title and beating Dave Zyglewicz along the way. He got his shot at Ken Norton in February 1972, but came up short, losing by 9th round KO.

Next fight: Joe Frazier on August 22nd.

Here is the one big bout of the month. The first unification bout in the history of the universe.

Joe Frazier 23-1-0 (23) v Gregorio Peralta 32-6-1 (20)

15 rounds for the WBA/WBC titles at the Madison Square Garden.

1969-02-11

Frazier comes into the fight a bit heavier than when he fought Ali. Peralta on the other hand is said to be in the shape of his life, and it sure looks like he is.

Round 1:
Only 20 seconds into the fight and Peralta lands a hard short right hook that stunts Frazier. Frazier comes right back with a big combo and you can't say it's starts out slow. Frazier lands two left hooks to the face of Peralta, who is caught in the corner. Frazier continues with a right hook and hard cross and Peralta really seems to be in trouble here. He protects himself for the rest of the round and towards the end he lands a couple of punches himself. 21-6

Round 2:
The round starts with a toe to toe exchange that Smokin' Joe gets the better of. Frazier follows the exchange up with a hard left. Peralta starts makins some work himself as he lands a combo that could win him the round had it not been for a strong ending by Joe. 11-9

Round 3:
The rounds start slow as both look to take an early breather. Then Frazier lands with a good combo and a hook. Peralta ends the round best landing with some jabs and crosses. 6-4

Round 4:
Frazier starts strong with a hook and a cross. Frazier then stuns Peralta with a another left hook and a right cross. Peralta then has his moment landing a hook and a combo, but Frazier immediately stops his small flurry by pounding him for the last half a minute. 23-7

Peralta really needs to keep Frazier more away instead of trying to trade with him, cause if this continues it will be over soon.

Round 5:
Once again Frazier dominates landing hooks and crosses, and a strong combination at the end almosts sends Peralta to the floor as he starts looking tired. 15-2

Round 6:
Finally Peralta starts to keep him away as he lands his jabs and a good combo. Halfway into the round Frazier lands another big combo and Peralta is in trouble. He pounds him for the last minute of the round and Peraltas good start was to no use. 28-9

Round 7:
Frazier lands a hook that opens a cut under Peraltas right eye. Frazier continues landing accurate power punches and once again Peralta is stumbling backward. Frazier lands a wild left hook and the ref looks like he is considering stopping the fight. Peralta just holds on a another big Frazier round ends. 29-2

Round 8:
Frazier senses he can knock Peralta out as he comes out agressive looking to land big punches. And he does. He pounds Peralta with combos and then a strong cross sends him to the floor for the first time in the fight. Peralta tries to get up but he can't do it. He is counted out here in the 8th.

The winner by KO in the 8th round, still WBA Champ and new WBC champ - Joe Frazier.

Frazier moves to 24-1-0 (24) and Peralta moves to 32-7-1 (20)

A very strong showing and Ali really has some task to look forward to should the fight be made.

End of month news.

Today at a press meeting in Hamburg, Albert Westphals hometown, it was announced that Albert will face british champ Billy walker for the EBU championship in June.

Billy Walker has really rebounded after his bad period where he lost 3 and got a draw in 4 fights. Since then he has won 3 in a row, one against tough italian Dante Cane.

It was also rumoured that Frazier would have to take his mandatory in WBC in order to keep the title. That could be standing in the way of a possible third fight between Muhammad Ali and himself.

On next months fight card featuring the Chuvalo-Ali and the Mathis-Halpern fights, it was rumoured that Ken Norton would be on the undercard facing his stiffest test to date. Ken Norton and his manager both had no comments.

Fight Card

FIGHT NIGHT at Yankee Stadium

1969-03-24

WBO - George Chuvalo v Muhammad Ali
NABF - Buster Mathis v Bobby Halpern
Ken Norton v Bjarne Lingaas

Ken Norton 16-0-0(15) v Bjarne Lingaas 20-4-0 (5)

Ken cruised and gave Bjarne a severe beating but couldn't knock him out in an impressive perfomace against a pretty tough scrap. Scores were:
99-91, 100-90, 100-91 as Ken moves to 17-0-0 (15) while Bjarne moves to 20-5-0 (5)

Buster Mathis 25-1-0 (6) v Bobby Halpern 32-8-2 (23)

Buster is a big perfomance and a win here could make him the #1 WBC challenger and secure him a fight against Smokin' Joe. Bobby looks kind of out of shape while Buster is super fit.

Buster dominated Bobby who already got tired in the 3rd, and the 4th was an easy pounding. In the 5th Buster landed bombs over a full round until the ref finally stopped the complete mismatch.

Buster Mathis TKO 5 Bobby Halpern as he defends the Nabf title.

Buster moves to 26-1-0 (7) and Bobby moves to 32-9-2 (23)

A good perfomance but against an opponent so out of shape, how much does it really prove?

George Chuvalo 34-7-0 (26) v Muhammad Ali 36-1-0 (31) for the WBO title.

I had alot written here but some comp- issue removed it. In short:

Ali completely dominated Chuvalo, sent him down for a knockdown in the 8th. Chuvalo continues to walk through massive punishment without going down for good. In the 15th, Ali sends him down once again, but Chuvalo stands up ready for more. The fights goes to the decision.
The scores are: 150-133, 149-134, 148-135 all in favor of the NEW WBO CHAMP, MUHAMMAD ALI.

Ali moves to 37-1-0 and moves closer to a possible third fight against Frazier. Chuvalo moves to 34-8-0 (26) and with the beating he took here tonight he might be lacking towards the end.

End of March news.

Joe Fraziers manager has announced that he will be defending his title against #1 WBC Buster Mathis in July. Many thought he would be facing Muhammad Ali, but that would mean losing the WBC title, as the rules say you have got to face the #1 after winning a title. The WBO rules are the same, but Ali had announced that would be ready to be stripped in order to fight Smokin'. By taking this fight Buster Mathis will be stripped of his NABF title, that will now be up for grabs.

Ali announced the day after that he will be facing WBO #1 Gregorio Peralta, also in July. He commented: "Gregorio Peralta is a bum; inside of seven the Argentinian will be done.
A bum I have to beat to get to Joe; he will be punished, blow by blow.
Frazier is watching, have the fight contracts to sign,
After I beat the Gorilla, all the titles will be mine." Ali has beaten Gregorio three times before as he simply keeps working his way up to that #1 ranking. Has has taken him out in the 2nd, the 14th and once it went the 15 round distance.

It has been rumoured that George Chuvalo could be the one part of a fight for the now vacant NABF title.

End of April news.

It is now official that George Chuvalo will be fighting for the Nabf title. The opponent will be Al Jones. The fight will take place in August. The venue is yet to be announced.

It has been announced that Oscar Bonavena will be stripped of his LABA title since he has not defended it in more than a year. He won the title in April last year against tough Manuel Ramos by a 12 round unanimous decision.

The ring magazine has now stated that they, starting today, will do a monthly top 10 of the heavyweights. So here it is:

1. Joe Frazier, WBA & WBC champ
2. Muhammad Ali, WBO champ
3. Jerry Quarry, Undefeated IBF champ
4. Gregorio Peralta
5. Buster Mathis
6. George Chuvalo
7. Oscar Bonavena
8. Al Jones
9. Leotis Martin
10. Dave Zyglewicz.

Most surprising is that Billy Daniels has been completely left out and also that Gregorio Peralta has been put before Buster Mathis.

May world fight

Oscar Bonavena 26-3-0 (22) v Billy Daniels 27-7-1 (9)

1969-05-27 - Luna Park, Buenos Aires, Argentina

20000 fans were eager to see their hero 'Ringo' in action.

Both fighters show up, looking in excellent shape knowing that this fight could be the 'make or break' for both of them. A win could very likely give them a title shot, while a loss really would set the loser back.

Oscar starts out well hurting Billy already in the first with a wicked hook. The 2nd and the 3rd are pretty close with a slight edge to the hometown favorite. In the 4th Oscar comes out strong before landing a stupid low blow. This is enough for the ref to stop the fight to loud boos from the homecrowd and lots of protests from Oscar.

Oscar moves to 26-4-0 (22) and Billy moves to 28-7-1 (9)

End of may news

Oscar Bonavena has together with his manager stated that he wants a rematch and a suspension of the referee, saying it was the most ridicolous decision they had ever seen. The low blow was pretty clear, the question is whether it should be enough to stop a fight as i didn't look to planned. It did look like an accident. Neither Billy Daniels or his manager had any comments.

It has been decided that the three top fights next month will be put into a fight card. The main event will as expected be the IBF championship fight, Jerry Quarry v Dave Zyglewicz. The Co-main has been decided to be the European championship fight between Albert Westphal and Billy Walker. The third big fight, Leotis Martin v Bob Foster has been put into the card as a support bout.

The ring top 10 - May:
1. Joe Frazier
2. Muhammad Ali
3. Jerry Quarry
4. Gregorio Peralta
5. Buster Mathis
6. George Chuvalo
7. Al Jones
8. Leotis Martin
9. Dave Zyglewicz
10. Billy Daniels

Changes: Oscar moves out after his DQ loss. Billy moves up to 10. The reason he doesn't go further up is that it was a mistake by Oscar, not a good fight from Billy. In fact he had lost all three rounds before the 4th when Oscar got DQ'ed.

Here you go:

Gregorio Peralta is a bum; inside of seven the Argentinian will be done.
A bum I have to beat to get to Joe; he will be punished, blow by blow.
Frazier is watching, have the fight contracts to sign,
After I beat the Gorilla, all the titles will be mine.

Ibf Championshiip.

Jerry Quarry v Dave Zyglewicz

First defence for Jerry since winning the title with a UD over Al Jones in January. My guess is a pretty easy win against a game opponent who can take loads of punishment.

Round 1:
Quarry throws many flurry, not many punches hit, but he keeps Dave at bay. Dave comes back with a couple of good punches himself. 10-5

Round 2:
Quarry starts out the agressor landing a hard cross and a combo that hurts Dave. Big round for Jerry. 20-4

Round 3:
Jerry seems to cruise and Dave seems to try to end the fight with a single punch. When he does that he makes it easy for Jerry. 9-2

Round 4:
Jerry lands a hook that opens a cut over Daves left eyebrow. The rest of the round is back and forward action which Jerry again gets the best of. 20-10

Round 5:
A minute in the round, Dave lands his best punch of the fight. A big hook, followed by a solid cross. Quarry clinches and stops Daves attack. In the end of the round its Jerry in control landing good punches. 14-13

Round 6:
Dave misses and Jerry counters again and again. Jerry lands wicked combos, but Daves iron chin is working for him. 23-4

Round 7:
Another round of punishment. 22-6

Round 8:
Finally Dave gets his timing right. He lands a good left hook followed by a three punch combo. He lands another combo and sends Jerry down for the count. He is back up at 8, and survives the rest of the round. 0-21

Round 9:
Jerry trowhs a punch after the break and the ref takes a point from him. Dave has another strong round as Jerry seems to have some long-term effect of the KD from last round. 6-12

Round 10:
The round starts slow as Jerry holds looking to fully recover. Which he does. A minute in he lands a big combination and then dominates. 10-1

Round 11:
A close round with a lot of dirty infighting. An accidental headbutt from Dave causes a cut at his right eye. 8-9

Round 12:
Jerry dominates. 15-2

Round 13:
Jerry lands a short uppercut that sends the tired Dave to the floor. It wasn't a big shot, but it doesn't take much at this point as he is really tiring out. 18-4

Round 14:
Jerrys cut is starting to look worse, but the doctor says he can continue. A close round where both fighters look really tired. 10-10

Round 15:
Dave will need a knockout here.
Jerry easily dominates this last round as Dave never gets his chance to land that big punch, so we go the scorecards.

145-138, 145-138, 144-139 all for the winner by unanimous decision and still IBF heavyweight champion... Jerry Quarry.

Jerry moves to 25-0-0 (20) and now has a free defence to choose. Dave moves out of the top 10 to a 23-2-0 (18) record.

End of June news.

Billy Daniels has agreed to fight Oscar Bonavena again, if they can agree to a fight in the US. The first fight, that ended in a (unfair?) disqualification of the argentine was held in Buenos Aires. The contract was signed the next day for an August fight on the undercard of Chuvalo - Jones.

Jerry Quarry will fight Henry Clark in his second defence of the IBF title. This was announced yesterday. Henry Clark is ranked #8 in IBF. Many were dissapointed that he didn't fight Leotis Martin like most had expected. The fight will take place in October.

Billy Walkers manager annouced that he will take on the EBU #1 and WBO #10 Gerhard Zech. This will take place in September.

Doug Jones has announced his retirement. He holds a record of 31-11-1 (23). He has fought many great fights, was the first to take Muhammad Ali to the 15th round decision, and holds some good wins over fighters such as; Kent Green, Sonny Banks, Thad Spencer, George 'Scrap Iron' Johnson, Amos Johnson, Karl Mildenberger, George Mahoni and Malcolm Price. He has lost his last 4 fights so therefore it wasn't much of a surprise that he retired.

The ring top 10:
1. Joe Frazier
2. Muhammad Ali
3. Jerry Quarry
4. Gregorio Peralta
5. Buster Mathis
6. George Chuvalo
7. Leotis Martin
8. Al Jones
9. Billy Daniels
10. Mac Foster
