Frazier and Ali in action..
Super fight night
1969-07-17, Madison Square Garden WBA/WBC - Joe Frazier 24-1-0 (24) v Buster Mathis 26-1-0 (7) WBO - Muhammad Ali 37-1-0 (31) v Gregorio Peralta 32-7-1 (20) Muhammad Ali v Gregorio Peralta Ali with a win will move close to a rematch with Smokin' Joe Frazier. Peralta is a huge underdog and most consider him a stepping stone as he doesn't have the power to stop him. Ali has predicted that he will win it inside seven. Both come into the fight looking fit. Round 1: Peralta starts out best landing some good punches in a quiet round. 2-6 Round 2: Ali lands more and better punches. 9-2 Round 3: Ali lands labs and crosses. Peralta comes up short very often. 9-4 Round 4: Both had their moments in another quiet round. 6-7 Round 5: Best round so far, as both fighters lands good punches. Alis speed is the difference as he lands combos and Peralta lands single punches. 16-8 Round 6: Peralta starts looking tired as he misses alot, and Ali counters. 8-2 Round 7: Good round from Peralta as he starts to throw more than one punch at a time. This was the round Ali predicted he would stop Peralta in.. 6-12 Round 8: Boring round. 3-2 Round 9: Another boring round, right until Ali lands an uppercut that sends Peralta to the canvas for an 2 count as he quickly stands. 11-4 Round 10: Peralta is clearly best in this round. Boxing smoothly. 2-15 Round 11: Close round, both landed combinations. 11-11 Round 12: Ali boxes best this round, good looking combos. 12-4 Unoficcial scorecard at this point: 115-113. Ali is not impressive. Round 13: Peralta starts best, but Ali comes strong towards the end. 11-10 125-122 Round 14: Another one of those close rounds where neither gains control. 7-8 134-132 Round 15: One of alis best rounds as he outboxes the argentine, but never hurts him. 14-0 Unofficial scorecard: 144-141 for Ali, lets see the official ones: 145-140 145-141 145-140 All for the winner by unanimous decision, and still WBO heavyweight champion, MUHAMMAD ALI.. Ali moves to 38-1-0 (31) without impressing, but he does step up to the task. Peralta moves to 32-8-1 (20) Joe Frazier v Buster Mathis Both figters are said to be in topshape for this bout, even though there has been rumours that Buster was not happy with his purse. Joe Frazier is the big favourite to take out Buster. Round 1: Frazier comes out landing bombs as he completely dominates. 16-2 Round 2: Once again Joe controls landing the bigger shots, landing more shots and defending himself better. 14-2 Round 3: A quiet round right until Joe accidentaly lands a headbutt that opens a nasty cut above Busters eye. 4-3 Round 4: A close round, until Joe hurts Buster at the end with a big left hook followed by a three punch combo. 20-10 Round 5: Frazier lands a hook that sends Buster to the canvas. He gets up at the count of 8, but i really doubt whether he can stay up for much longer. The ref now stops the fight. Not because of the KD, but because of the accidental headbutt that happened earlier. That means we'll go to the scorecards. The scores are: 40:35 40:35 39:36 All for the winner by unanimous decision, Joe Frazier! Frazier keeps his belts and moves to 25-1-0 (24), while Buster moves to 26-2-0 (7) Now everybody awaits to see a contract get signed. Joe Frazier v Muhammad Ali III really looks possible. |

August world fights
Fight night, Miami Arena, 1969-08-12
Nabf title fight - George Chuvalo v Al Jones, 12 rounds Rematch - Billy Daniels v Oscar Bonavena II, 10 rounds Billy Daniels 28-7-1 (9) v Oscar Bonavena 26-4-0 (22) Oscar is looking to revenge what he felt was an unfair DQ against him the last time the two fought. That time it was in Argentina, now it's in Billys hometown Miami. Oscar completely controls the first 4 rounds, and Billy is looking seriously tired. In the 5th Oscar sends him down for a 10 count. Oscar wins by KO 5 as he truly proved he is the better fighter of the two. In Argentina and in Miami. Oscar moves into the top 10, maybe even the top 6. His record is now 27-4-0 (23) and Billys is 28-8-1 (9) and he will go out of the top 10. Nabf title fight. George Chuvalo 34-8-0 (26) v Al Jones 23-2-0 (5) This could prove to be a very classic bout, with the smooth boxer and the hard hitting, hard chinned slugger. Chuvalo has a massive chin as he proven before. He also holds a very good punch. Al Jones has good defense and hand speed and is sort of a 'Mini-ali'. Chuvalo starts out landing big, but Al Jones recovers amazingly quick and comes back with good combos, same story in the 2nd. The 3rd is very close. Al Jones wins 4th, 5th and 6th and the ringside score is now 47-47, although one of the Chuvalo rounds could be given to Al. 7th is very close. Chuvalo wins the 8th, but you start to see that Chuvalos punches aren't hurting Al like you'd expect as he fights on even when Chuvalo lands his best and biggest shots. 9th is a close with a small edge toward Chuvalo. 10th is too close to call. Ringside score before last two rounds is 96-94 for Chuvalo. 11th is a good action round that Chuvalo gets the best of. Al outboxes Chuvalo to win the 12th. Ringside score before decision is 114-114. I would give it to Chuvalo though, but let's see: 116-114 for Al Jones 116-113 for George Chuvalo 115-114 for the winner by split decision and the new Nabf heavyweight champion... The toronto tank, George Chuvalo! George moves to 35-8-0 (26) and will fight Leotis Martin in December as already signed. Al moves to 23-3-0 (5), but showed a good perfomance. |

September world fight
Fight Night
1969-09-01, Earls Court, London EBU title fight - Billy Walker 35-4-1 (29) v Gerhard Zech 35-8-0 (27) A packed 18000 people in Billy Walkers hometown of London. Both figters should be in great shape, and they both look that way coming into the ring. First two rounds are extremely close with a good amount of action. Billy wins the second, and in the third he send Gerhard down for a count to five. 4th is another Billy round. In the 5th Billy lands a big punch that opens a cut over Gerhards left eye and wins the round. The 6th is a big exchange round, that the german gets the better of. In the 7th Billy reopens the cut and starts swelling around the germans left eye in another round for the brit. Billy wins the 8th and keeps going in the 9th as he sends Gerhard down for the second time tonight. This time Gerhard looks very shaken but gets himself up at 9. Billy sends him down again in the 10th, this time for a full 10 count. Billy Walker wins by KO in 10, and moves to 36-4-1 (30). Gerhard moves to 35-9-0 (27) and with the beating he took here, he could be going towards the end. |

End of September news.
Buster Mathis looks to rebound with a pretty easy fight against Alejandro Lavorante. The fight was announced yesterday and will take place in January of 1970. Buster lost his last fight against Joe Frazier in July. Lavorante won his last fight by KO 1 against, the now retired Amos Johnson, in August. For Lavorante this is probably the last chance to get a shot at a regional or a world title.
Rookie fighter profile: Earnie Shavers Earnie had a very short amateur career, but did become the National AAU Heavyweight Champion, and as a pro he has been frightening and impressive. In his pro debut he got taken the distance by Del Phillips, who was undefeated at the time. He has not gone the distance since then. Winning two 2nd round stoppages, and in his last four fights he has won by 1st round stoppage. It is still too early to say whether this 7-0-0 (6) fighter will become a world champ, but the potential and especially the power is definately there. The ring top 10: Joe Frazier Muhammad Ali Jerry Quarry George Chuvalo Gregorio Peralta Oscar Bonavena Buster Mathis Leotis Martin Mac Foster Al Jones |

October world fights
Fight night
1969-10-15, Polo Grounds, New York IBF - Jerry Quarry v Henry Clark, 15 rounds Mac Foster v Chuck Wepner, 10 rounds George Foreman v Jose Luis Garcia, 8 rounds Earnie Shavers v Jose Urtain, 8 rounds Earnis Shavers 7-0-0 (6) v Jose Urtain 10-2-0 (3) One of the two 'special features' on tonights fight card, Earnie Shavers is one of the hottest prospects around, and will face his toughest test to date as he faces the tought Jose Urtain, who won't give him an easy time. Both look in top shape. Shavers wins the 1st rounds, and in the secong he sends Jose down for a count. He is quickly up though. Shavers then gets a little wild and can't finish the job. A super action-filled 3rd round with back and forth action, Shavers wins it pretty clerly landing more and harder. A close 4th is too close to call. Urtain was winning the 5th until Shavers stunned Urtain and landed a lot to win the round closely. The 6h is the best round for Urtain as his speed looks very good. With too rounds left i have it 59-54 for Shavers. It seems Shavers could be tiring out as Urtain wins the 7th. Urtain will still need a stoppage to win. He goes out aggresive, and that could've been a mistake as Shavers sends him down for a full 10 count. Earnie Shavers wins by KO 8 and moves to 8-0-0 (7) and Jose moves to 10-3-0 (3) but proved a good test as he could get Shavers into the later round where he started tiring out. George Foreman 7-0-0 (7) v Jose Luis Garcia 5-1-1 (5) Foreman is the second of the two 'special features' tonight. A fight between two knockout artists, and this should prove to be a good fight as Garcia is Foremans tough test. A good measuring could be their commonopponent Keith MacLaren. Foreman took him out in one. Jose Luis took him out in five. Both look in top shape. Foreman starts out bombing winning the round 25-3, but Garcia bravely takes it. Second round is more of the same until the ref stops the fight. Well, as long as Garcia could take it and move forward, why stop it? George Foreman wins by TKO 2 and moves to 8-0-0 (8). Garcia moves to 5-2-1 (5) Mac Foster 23-1-2 (19) v Chuck Wepner 25-8-1 (9) Another tough test for Mac. Both are in top shape. After a slow start, Mac knocks Chuck down for the 10 count. Mac Foster wins by an impressive KO 1 and moves to 24-1-2 (20) while Chuck moves to 25-9-1 (9). IBF Championship fight - Jerry Quarry 25-0-0 (20) v Henry Clark 28-5-1 (5) Jerry takes this as an easy defence against a fighter who is good but far from great. They have fought once before when both was going up the ranks. Jerry won it by TKO 4. I have trouble seing any kind of an upset here. Both are in top shape. Round 1: Henry starts well winning the round 15-5 Round 2: Henry is boxing well and wins another round. 10-7 Round 3: Jerry is most active but miss many of his shots. 6-6 Round 4: Another close round, Jerry trying most but Henry is fighting a very smart fight against a stronger opponent. 11-10 Round 5: Henry is looking good until he walks into a big combo by Jerry that sends him down. He is counted out in the 5th. Jerry Quarry moves to 26-0-0 (21) with a 5th round stoppage. Henry who started out well moves to 28-6-1 (5). Jerry might take a mandatory as he has to do that before June next year, but most expect to fight another bout pretty quickly before fighting his mandatory, who right now is Buster Mathis. |

End of october news
The promoter of Jerry Quarry has announced that his next opponent will be Mac Foster. This will be the third defence of his IBF title since winning against Al Jones in January of this year. Mac Foster won a first round knockout against Chuck Wepner on the same card as Jerry Quarry stopped Henry Clark in the 5th round. The fight will take place in January of next year.
Also is Al Jones v Ebu champion Billy Walker. This is a final chance for Billy to shoot himself into the title picture. Al still has his career infront of him and is the favorite, but Billy is not without skills. The fight will take place in February of next year. The ring top 10: Joe Frazier Muhammad Ali Jerry Quarry George Chuvalo Gregorio Peralta Oscar Bonavena Buster Mathis Mac Foster Leotis Martin Al Jones Next month it happens.. Joe Frazier v Muhammad Ali III On the undercard: Oscar Bonavena v Gregorio Peralta for the Argentine championship. + Larry Middleton v Dave Zyglewicz, Ken Norton v Billy Daniels + George Foreman and Earnie Shavers both in action in the greatest card in the universe history.. |

November fight card
Super fight night
1969-11-05, Caesars Palace, Las Vegas WBA/WBC/WBO - Joe Frazier v Muhammad Ali Argentine championship - Gregorio Peralta v Oscar Bonavena Larry Middleton v Dave Zyglewicz Billy Daniels v Ken Norton George Foreman v Franco DePiccoli Earnie Shavers v Boroda Belov A completely packed Caesars Palace and the streets of Las Vegas is full of tension as we await these great fights leading up to the first fight for the undisputed heavyweight championship. Earnie Shavers 8-0-0 (7) v Boroda Belov 16-10-2 (1), 8 rounds Another tough test for the new youngster of the game. An extremely hard puncher with the potential to be a world champ some day. Round 1: Earnie starts out rough. A minute in the round and Boroda is down. As Boroda gets up he still looks shaken. 20-2 Round 2: A close round with Shavers landing his bombs but Boroda taking them. 14-12 Round 3: Earnie shows strong hands landing two big combos but failing to follow up on the hard chinned Boroda. 18-5 Round 4: Boroda is send down for the second time with a big combo. Boroda shows heart fighting to get up and he just does it at the count of 9. Earnie lands some more big shots but doesn't put him to sleep. 28-2 Round 5: Another combination sends Boroda down. And once again shows bravery getting up. Earnie then pounds until the ref rightly stops the fight. Earnie Shavers wins by TKO 5 and moves to 9-0-0 (8) while Boroda moves to 16-11-2 (1) George Foreman 8-0-0 (8) v Franco DePiccoli 33-8-0 (28), 8 rounds An extremely tough test this early in a fighters career is very rare to see. With Francos chin this is going to be a very very tough fight for Big George. Franco also has bigtime power which his 28 KO's in 33 wins clearly shows. Both look in their best of shape. Round 1: Foreman lands some wicked punches, but Franco also want's part landing good at the end. 22-7 Round 2: A good round for Foreman without pounding Franco 12-5 Round 3: How Franco can take this is a mystery. 26-4 Round 4: After pounding the defensless Franco the ref finally stops the fight. George Foreman wins by TKO 4 and moves to 9-0-0 (9) after an impressive showing. He is definately for real. Franco moves to 33-9-0 (28) but he never really stood a chance against Foreman. Billy Daniels 28-8-1 (9) v Ken Norton 17-1-0 (15), 10 rounds Ken looks to rebound from his stupid 10 rounds disqualification against Chuck Wepner against Billy Daniels. Both are in top shape. Round 1: Ken pounds Billy who doesn't land a single punch 0-17 Round 2: Another biiig round for Ken as he just pounds Billy Daniels. 0-23. Billy hasn't landed a single punch yet. Round 3: As Billy lands his first punch he gets it going and wins the round. 10-4 Round 4: Ken lands more and bigger. 4-11 Round 5: Ken sends Billy to the floor with a body shot. Ken must have taken his air completely out as the count goes to 10. Impressive 5th round KO for Ken Norton who rebounds and moves to 18-1-0 (16) while Billy moves to 28-9-1 (9) Larry Middleton 24-1-0 (8) v Dave Zyglewicz 25-3-0 (19), 10 rounds Larry is the favorite in what's expected to be a close fight. With a win here, Larry could be moving in the top 10. Both fighters show up in good shape. Round 1: Larry simply boxes better and wins. 9-4 Round 2: Larry keeps making Dave miss and countering himself. 12-4 Round 3: This is really impressive stuff from Larry, moving in and out, countering. 13-0 Round 4: Dave starts this round out a little better, but then Larry starts throwing fast combinations and wins the round. 24-8 Round 5: Once again, Larry is giving Dave a boxing lesson, right until a power left hook to the body by Dave sends him down for the count. Larry is up at the count of two though and seems alright. He is down again, but it is ruled a push. Larry actually wins the round, but because of the KD the judges will probably give it to Dave. 14-10 Round 6: It starts out even until the last minute which Larry completely controls. 18-11 Round 7: Another good round for Larry as Dave is tiring out, making it easy. 12-4 Round 8: At the beginning of the round Dave is hurt after a big uppercut. Larry then takes it easy and keeps Dave away to win an easy round. 10-0 Before the last two rounds my scorecard is: 79-73 for Larry Middleton. Round 9: Larrys countering is very impressive as he makes Dave look like a fool. 9-4 Round 10: The tired Dave Zyglewicz will need a knockout to win here. Zyglewicz does land some good punches but it isn't enough. 10-10 The scorecards are: 98-92 96-94 (???) 98-92 All for the winner by unanimous decision, Larry Middleton! Larry moves to 25-1-0 (8) and might go into the top 10 after this impressive perfomance. Dave moves to 25-4-0 (19) and his days as a top contender are most likely over. Gregorio Peralta 32-8-1 (20) v Oscar 'Ringo' Bonavena 27-4-0 (23) 12 roundsfor the Argentine and Latin American championship titles. Two top contenders going at it for national pride. This should be a great fight. Gregorio Peralta will most likely try to outbox Oscar, and he will probably try to get on the inside to land his hard and fast shots. As for the styles Gregorio might be the favourite, but he is not young anymore and Oscars heart and punching might be enough in a 12 round bout. Both show in great shape. Round 1: Bonavena scores early with a big left and then follows up nicely to win the round. 4-16 Round 2: Once again, Oscar starts best landing a big hook, but this time Gregorio recovers better and lands a one two. Oscar, as we know him, doesn't stop and lands many more good punches to win the round. 6-20 Round 3: Peralta finally gets his boxing going and edges out a close round. 9-7 Round 4: Another round too close to call. 6-7 Round 5: Bonavena lands better as Gregorio isn't fast enought to get away from him. 8-15 Round 6: Oscar is winning quite clearly at the moment. 4-17 My scorecard after half the bout: 56-59 for Oscar. Round 7: A good action round that Oscar won. 8-13 Round 8: Gregorio looks tired as he goes into clinches everytime Oscar is near him. Oscar is just pounding on now. After two and a half minute of this Peralta goes down. He gets up, but looks very tired and hurt. 0-32 Round 9: Oscar starts to become wild with his punces and Peralta makes him miss but doesn't get much in himself. 6-6 Round 10: Easy round for Oscar against a very tired opponent. 4-15 My scorecard with two rounds to go: 92-98 for Oscar Round 11: Oscar lands a beautiful combination that sends Peralta down. Peralta just can't regains his legs and is counted out here in the 11th. Oscar Bonavena wins by KO 11 and becomes LABA champ, Argentine champ and moves to 28-4-0 (24) and might very well go into the top 5 here. Gregorio Peralta moves to 32-9-1 (20). The big main event is coming up.. |

End of November news
The WBA and WBC both has Oscar Bonavena as their mandatory and Ali has chosen to keep his belts and will therefore face Oscar in his next fight. Not that anybody really thought he'd face Frazier again right now. The brutal beatings they both took has to put that on a break. Ali v Bonavena will take place in five months (April next year).
The ring top 10: Muhammad Ali Joe Frazier Jerry Quarry Oscar Bonavena George Chuvalo Buster Mathis Mac Foster Gregorio Peralta Leotis Martin Larry Middleton (11. Al Jones) |
