1976-01-01 - NEWS
Awards for 1975 Fight of the year: Muhammad Ali TKO 11 George Foreman Ten brutal rounds was ended when Foremans corner threw in the towel after him taking massive amounts of punishment. This was one of those career defining wins for Muhammad Ali who proved just how great he is. Fighter of the year: Muhammad Ali Ali had another fantastic year as he stopped Boone Kirkman in 9th, George Foreman in 11th and outpointed Joe Bugner in 15, all in title defenses. Runner up: Jimmy Young Jimmy Young got his big breakthrough with two winning efforts in 1975. He outpointed Jose Roman to gain a shot at the vacant IBO belt. He fought a fantastic fight against Earnie Shavers as he outboxed him in every way possible to become the first ever IBO champion. Prospect of the year: Larry Holmes Holmes had another great year on his way to world glory as he stopped all five opponents inside 3 rounds. He KOed Granville Lloyd, Larry Duncan, Artur Njos, Rudi Lubbers and Ferenc Kristofcsak and is looking for a step up in 1976. Upset of the year: Jeff Merritt TKO 8 Al Lewis Jeff Merritt seemed to make the former IBF heavyweight champion look like an old man as he outslugged him before a hand injury crowned Merritt as the winner. Dave Zyglewicz announces his retirement The former NABF heavyweight champion has announced that he will be hanging up the gloves after a 10 year long career. He started out his career in humble fashion by going 19-1 with the sole loss coming against Buster Mathis and without a single notable win. When he stepped it up against Henry Clark he was lucky to escape with a MD. He got his one and only title shot in 1969 as he gave the IBF champion Jerry Quarry a tough fight before losing an unanimous decision. He won the NABF belt in 1972 by knocking out Leotis Martin in a big upset. He fought and lost against world class fighters such as George Foreman (TKO 8) and Muhammad Ali (KO 10) but was never a fighter to back down without a fight. He decided to quit boxing after being dominated by Boone Kirkman in October, 1975. Whats next for Muhammad Ali? The saga of Muhammad Ali (50-3, 40 KOs) continued when he outpointed Joe Bugner in 15 rounds on 27th of December in 1975, only a few days ago. His career has been truly magnificent and trying to describe it here would take 15 pages so instead this will be about what is next for him. A bunch of fighters is being mentioned already: What most boxing fans want to see is a 6th fight against the former two-time heavyweight champion of the world, Joe Frazier (35-5, 34 KOs). This rivalry is perhaps the biggest and most famous in the history of boxing if not all of sports. It is striking that Muhammad Alis three losses all has come against Joe Frazier and he is a man who has fought the best out there at all times. Another bout being mentioned is a rematch with the former WBC and IBF heavyweight champion, Ken Norton (31-3, 27 KOs) who has been clamoring to get another shot after only losing by a split decision last time around. The fight was a true classic as a knockdown in favour of Ali in the 15th and final round was the decider on two of the judges cards. The very same Ken Norton is set to challenge Jimmy Young (29-2, 10 KOs) for his IBO belt soon. If Jimmy Young wins that bout, it could be a possibility for Ali to meet the philly kid. A few more names has been mentioned in Earnie Shavers (28-2, 24 KOs), Gene Innocent (30-6, 20 KOs), Jeff Merritt (30-6, 20 KOs), Mike Weaver (23-1, 20 KOs) and Ron Lyle (23-1, 20 KOs). Retirements Dave Zyglewicz (1965-1975) 36-9, 25 KOs. Notable wins: James J. Beattie (31-9-2), Henry Clark (23-4-1), Chuck Wepner (23-7-1 & 25-9-1), Carl Gizzi (28-3-1), Jurgen Blin (23-5), Gregorio Peralta (32-9-1), Boone Kirkman (18-2), Leotis Martin (32-9-2), Oscar Bonavena (35-10), Jeff Merritt (28-7). Losses: Buster Mathis (16-0), Jerry Quarry (24-0), Jurgen Blin (22-5), Larry Middleton (24-1), Ken Norton (24-1), George Foreman (23-0), Muhammad Ali (43-3), Joe Bugner (25-6), Boone Kirkman (25-7)

Main Event Gene Innocent 30-6 (20) vs Dennis Avoth 25-7-4 (0) 12 rounds for Innocents Commonwealth strap. Innocent had trouble really getting in on Avoth who kept his distance nicely although without doing much. Score was dead even after 4, but in the 5th, Avoth landed a thudding body shot that put Innocent to his knees. Avoth seemed to gain the advantage from that knockdown for a few rounds. Innocent started dominating from 9th but then went back to his lazy style in the last two rounds. Scorecards read 114-113 Innocent, 115-112 Avoth and 114-113 for the winner by split decision and NEW Commonwealth champion, Dennis Avoth. Dennis Avoth, who is yet to win a fight by knockout, improves to 26-7-4 as he wins the Commonwealth championship with a split decision.

Yep, and also Nortons stamina seems to win him very many fights. He always wins the later rounds despite being the more active in the early ones. When Ali and Frazier retire he could become #2 in the division with only Foreman before him. This win was big for him.
