Larry Holmes cracks the top 10

1972 olympic heavyweight gold medalist, Larry Holmes (19-0, 17 KO) has officially cracked the top 10 by the RING's Rankings after his 10th round Unanimous decision against Peter Boddington (27-8-1, 21 KO) who as expected proved the toughest test of Holmes' career.

The next big thing: Bernardo Mercado

With a big bunch of undefeated fighters flying up the rankings, one is making himself the most notable of the bunch; colombian Bernardo Mercado (8-0, 7 KO) has a nonstop style and wears down his opponents before finishing them off in the best Joe Frazier style. He has a fine amatuer pedigree, but lost out in the olympics 1st round by semifinalist Scott LeDoux. But only by the close scores of 33-30. Many feel that he had an off-night on that day. So far, as a pro, he has only been taken the distance by tough veteran Heriberto Ruiz (19-32-2, 5 KO), but he was knocked down 4 times during the fight. Mercado is not your typical puncher though, he drives people into the ropes and unleashes combinations. This far in his career, he has not really been tested, but he is only 24 years old, and there is lots of times to step it up. Rumours has been going about a possible LABA title fight against Pedro Lovell (23-7, 20 KO) or Jose Luis Garcia (17-10-3, 11 KO). Watch out for Bernardo Mercado in the future.

Major fights anno October 1976

2nd: Ken Norton (33-3, 28 KO) defends his IBO belt against Armando Zanini (25-5-2, 4 KO) in the main-event. Ron Lyle (25-1, 22 KO) takes on Giuseppe Ros (30-9-1, 13 KO) in the co-feature. Duane Bobick (14-1, 11 KO) and Larry Duncan (20-9-1, 13 KO) will also be in action.

15th: Ibar Arrington (13-0-2, 2 KO) is facing Natsu Samurakami (9-4) on another segment of Friday Night Fights. Also in action: Kevin Isaac (16-3, 4 KO), Johnny Boudreaux (13-2-1, 1 KO) and Albin Hjorth (4-0, 3 KO)

RING RANKINGS
1. Ken Norton 33-3 (28), IBO champion.
2. George Foreman 31-2 (31), USBA champion.
3. Earnie Shavers 30-2 (26), NABF champion.
4. Jimmy Young 31-3 (10)
5. Boone Kirkman 28-8 (20)
6. Joe Bugner 30-9 (19), EBU champion.
7. Jeff Merritt 31-9 (25)
8. Ron Lyle 25-1 (22)

Lyle took no step back, but pounded Ros with three unanswered blows to the head before the bell. Huge round for Lyle. 50-45 Ron Lyle

Round 6
Lyle was again the agressor, cornering Ros and landing an uppercut. Ros seemed tired and Lyle pummeled Ros with a stiff uppercut! Lyle had found a weapon in his uppercut, and landed another only to vary it with a solid cross! Ros seemed desperate as he fought out an exchange with Lyle and at the end, was pounded with three big hooks to the body! Lyle knew he had his man hurt and pounded the body of Ros. Ros still punched back as he landed a jab. Lyle saw the opening and caught Ros with a huge uppercut! Ros stumbled backward and Lyle landed another hook to the jaw!

Zanini moves into the corner again, makes Norton miss, then lands an uppercut. This looks like a good gameplan from Zanini. Norton pins Zanini in the corner, but is made to look like a fool as he misses everything. Zanini counters with a sneaky right. Zanini doesnt have enough speed in that jab, as it misses.
