December world fight

Nabf title - George Chuvalo 35-8-0 (26) v Leotis Martin 28-7-1 (17), 12 rounds.

1969-12-15, Maple Leaf Gardens, Canada

Both fighters show up in great shape. They have fought once before, Leotis Martin won by DQ 4.

Leotis edges a close first round. George edges a close second. Leotis wins 3rd to 6th. Leotis sends George down in the 7th and wins the round big. Chuvalo hurts Leotis in 8th and wins the round. Chuvalo wins a close 9th. Leotis wins 10th. With two rounds to go my scorecard is: 97-93 for Leotis.
3 minutes of clinching in the 11th. Leotis wins the 12th and final round. Judges scorecards are:
117-111
118-110
117-111

All for the winner by unanimous decision and New Nabf champ.. Leotis Martin!

An impressive perfomance moves Leotis in the top 5 and moves his record to 29-8-1 (17) while George moves a step closer to retiring and his record goes to 35-9-0 (26)

End of december news

Gregorio Peralta has signed to fight Dave Zyglewicz in May, next year. Gregorio takes this as an 'easy fight' after losses to Frazier, Ali and Bonavena in his last three fights.

Larry Middletons only loss came against mexican Manuel Ramos. Now he has announced that the two will fight a rematch in March next year. Larry has really impressed lately, and Manuel is going downhill. Larry says he has been chasing the fight for ages.

Leotis Martin has announced that he will defend his nabf title against his #1 challenger Buster Mathis. The fight will happen in April next year on the undercard of Ali-Bonavena.

The ring top 10:
Muhammad Ali
Joe Frazier
Jerry Quarry
Oscar Bonavena
Leotis Martin
Buster Mathis
George Chuvalo
Mac Foster
Gregorio Peralta
Larry Middleton

(11. Al Jones)

1970

New fighters debuting in 1970:

Mike Boswell, Usa
Pedro Lovell, Argentina
Rudi Lubber, Netherlands
Maxime Mauligalo, French Polynesia

Poor bunch compared to the last year with Foreman, Shavers, Young and lots of other good fighters.

+ some Tc's.

in fact the next top fighters is Ron Lyle in 1971, Larry Holmes in 1973, Trevor Berbick and Michael Dokes in 1976. Gerry Cooney, Randall Cobb and Michael Spinks in 1977. Pinklon Thomas in 1978. Greg Page and Tim Witherspoon in 1979. Tony Tubbs and Tony Tucker in 1980 and lets stop it here.

1970 January fight card

Fight night

1970-01-03, Yankee Stadium, New York

IBF - Jerry Quarry v Mac Foster
Buster Mathis v Alejandro Lavorante

Buster Mathis 26-2-0 (7) v Alejandro Lavorante 38-14-1 (30)

Buster looks to fight an easy tune up before his NABF title shot against Leotis Martin. Lavorante is a good opponent and his good punch should be a factor, but Busters superior boxing probably will be the decisive factor in the bout.

They have fought once before, Buster won an UD 10.

Both are in top shape.

Buster completely outboxes Alejandro in the first as he can't even land a single punch to Busters 54 (28 are jabs/crosses). More of the same in the second, even though Alejandro landed his first seven punches, all harmless though. Buster continues to outbox Alejandro in the 3rd and this is looking like a complete mismatch. 4th is boring, as Buster just lands a couple of punches and Alejandro lands none. Well, more of the same in the 5th as he even hurts Alejandro. 6th are another easy round for Buster. 7th is the same. 8th is another round for Buster as the scorecards before the last round is 80-72, i can't even be discussed. 9th is a pounding from Buster. In the 10th Lavorante goes all out and lands a few punches, but still loses the round big.

The scorecards are:
100-90, 100-90 and 99-91 (He gave the 6th to Alejandro?!)

Buster moves to 27-2-0 (7) and showed that he is ready for Leotis. Lavorante moves to 38-15-0 (30) after a really un-impressive perfomance.

IBF - Jerry Quarry 26-0-0 (21) v Mac Foster 24-1-2 (20), 15 rounds

Jerry enters the fight as a big favourite, but this won't be too easy. Mac can punch as he showed by stopping Chuck Wepner in the first round.

Both show up in top condition and this could prove to be a very competative fight.

Round 1:
Foster starts well landing some good shots, but Jerrys speed becomes too much for him on the inside. 11-4

Round 2:
A supreme round for Jerry landing flurrys and combos. 24-2

Round 3:
Lots of exchanges where Macs power seems to make the difference. 10-13

Round 4:
A close round that Mac seems to edge. 8-10

Round 5:
Jerry pounds Mac until he suddenly gets countered, but still Jerry wins the round. 21-8

Round 6:
Jerry pounds Mac and he is in very much trouble. After almost three minutes of devasting cominations Mac goes down for the count but gets up quickly and is lucky to have survived this round. 39-0

Round 7:
Foster lands some good shots until he is send down by a hook. He gets up but if it only took one of Jerrys shots to send him down like that, he probably won't survive much longer. Jerry lands a couple of more good shots but can't finish the job. 14-5

Round 8:
Foster took the full rest and looks very tired. Foster suddenly goes all out for the knockout as he lands a hard uppercut and a hook. Jerry then counters with a jab and a hook that sends Foster down for the third time. Foster gets up again but i doubt that he will survive this time. But he does. 16-9

Round 9:
A close round where Mac seems to be recovering and lands some good shots. 9-9

Round 10:
Jerry is landing hard shots and wins the round because of his fast and hard hands. 16-7

With five rounds to go i have it:
98-89 for Jerry.

Round 11:
Jerry lands a strong cross and sends Mac down again. Once again he gets up. A hook and an uppercut later and Mac is down yet again. He gets up once again. This is ridiculous. Jerry sends Mac down for the third time which makes it a TKO because of the three knockdown rule.

Jerry Quarry TKO 11 Mac Foster.

Jerry moves to 27-0-0 (22) as he defended the IBF title in impressive fashion. He will now have to face his mandatory, who that is will be decided after this month. Mac moves to 24-2-2 (20) and could be going out of the top 10, but he might just stay.

February 1970 world fight

Fight Night

1969-02-12, Earls Court, England

Al Jones 24-3-0 (5) v Billy Walker 36-4-1 (30)

Billys chance to prove himself on a world level against a better opponent. This could be a close fight, but Al Jones boxing skills makes him favourite.

Both show in perfect shape.

Al wins the 1st. In the 2nd he really picks up the pace as he outboxes Billy. Al wins a close 3rd. Al gives Billy a lesson of boxing in the 4th. Al outscores him again the 5th. In the 6th Billy gets send to the floor. He is quickly up again though. He easily outscores Billy for the rest of the round to win a 10-8 round. Al wins the 7th easily against a tired Billy. Al wins the 8th too. Scorecard after 8 is 80-71 and Billy will need a KO. Al is impressive im the 9th as he wins 69-0 in punches landed. In the final round. Same story in 10th. Scorecards are: 100-89, 100, 89 and 100-89..

All for the winner by unanimous decision.. Al Jones.

Al moves to 25-3-0 (5) after giving Billy a boxing lesson. Billy moves to 36-5-1 (30) and will probably do best in focusing on his EBU title.

I use auto-aging, but i started out setting the numbers too low, but i don't know how i can change it without affecting the fighters' aging.

Begin -> pre prime - 5 to 7 fights
Pre prime -> Prime - 10 to 15 fights
Prime -> Post Prime - 10 to 25 fights
Post Prime -> End - 5 to 12
End -> Retired - 3 to 8

1970 March

Fight Night

1970-03-12, Estadio Municipal Malvinas, Argentina

Larry Middleton 25-1-0 (8) v Manuel Ramos 26-10-2 (13) II

This is in every possible way a rematch. As Manuel is ranked way down the rankings, that can't be the objective of this fight for Larry. This is about the pride of Larry Middleton. Larry suffered his first and only loss at the hands of Manuel. That happened in May of 1968. The fight was very even until Manuel stopped Larry in the 10th and final round. To further make this fight dramatic it is held at the exact same stadium as in May, 1968.

Both figters are in top shape.

Larry wins the 1st. He dominates in 2nd. Larry wins a close 3rd as Manuel really fights back. A dominate 4th round from Larry. Manuel starts well in the 5th until he is sent to the canvas. Manuel shows heart as he gets up quickly to fight on. As Manuel has been cut after an accidental headbutt the fight goes to the scorecards here in the 5th.

The scorecards are:
39-37, 40-36, 40-36 all for the winner by unanimous decision.. Larry Middleton. Right after the fight, Larry states that he want to fight him again saying that this wasn't a true win for him.

Larry moves to 26-1-0 (8) and Manuel moves to 26-11-2 (13)

Fight Night

1970-04-30, Yankee Stadium, USA

WBA/WBC/WBO - Muhammad Ali v Oscar Bonavena
NABF - Leotis Martin v Buster Mathis

Leotis Martin 29-7-1 (17) v Buster Mathis 27-2-0 (7), 12 rounds

This is the first defence for Leotis since winning his title against George Chuvalo in December of last year. The two fighters has met each other twice before with the two winning one each. Leotis won the first by a round Unanimous Decision for the vacant IBF title in April 1968. Buster won by Majority Decision for the very same NABF title in December of 1968.

Both in good shape.

This is expected to be a tough close fight with Buster being the boxer and Leotis the puncher.

1st round is too close to call, but with a high amount of action. Buster wins the 2nd after some good boxing. 3rd is boring and too close to call. Leotis lands some good punches in 4th but Buster is landing more and countering effectively. Another smooth round of boxing from Buster in the 5th. 6th is boring and close

After 6 the ringside scorecard is 58-57 for Buster.

7th is a perfect round for Buster as he counters over and over again. Leotis wins 8th with harder punching. 9th is a fairly close round, although Buster won it with a good margin. Leotis is tiring out and knows it as he goes all out to end this before he has nothing more left. He is losing the 8th right until he lands his big hook and sends Buster down. Mathis gets up but looks very shaken. Mathis survives but lost the round BIG.

After 10th the ringside scorecard is 95-95 with two round to go, this is gonna be exciting.

11th is close all the way through until Leotis lands some good punches to win the round. 105-104 on my card before last round.

12th is very, very close. If their is a winner of the round it is Leotis. I have it 115-114 for Leotis.

Here is the scorecards

115-114
115-114
115-113

All for the winner by Unanimous decision, and STILL NABF heavyweight champion .. Leotis Martin!!

Leotis Martin moves to 30-7-1 (17) and possibly to a title fight. Buster Mathis moves to 27-3-0 (7) with two of his losses now coming at the hands of Leotis Martin.

Next up is the main event

Main event

Muhammad Ali 39-1-0 (32) v Oscar Bonavena 28-4-0 (24), 15 rounds.

'The Greatest' makes his first title defence since beating Joe Frazier, in November last year. The fight was a very tough fight and Ali really seems to be fighting the best. Peralta and Chuvalo might be the two best contenders out there. Frazier was #1 before facing Ali in their third fight and Bonavena beat the aforementioned Peralta to gain this shot.

Bonavena is a tough, hard chinned fighter with a very good punch, but it can't be discussed that Ali is the favourite and should he not win this it would be some shocker.

Both show up in top shape.

Round 1:
Ali starts out landing better but Bonavena finishes strong in an actionpacked round. 13-12

Round 2:
Ali punishes Bonavena who comes forward and gets in some good shots himself. 19-7

Round 3:
A beautiful round from Ali as he kept Bonavena away from even hitting him. 15-0

Round 4:
Ali lands good punches and sends Bonavena down with a body punch. Bonavena is up, but hurt. 17-2

Round 5:
Bonavena hurts Ali as he has his best round so far by quickly recovering from that knockdown. 5-17

Round 6:
A close round but Ali wins by landing good combos. 13-9

Round 7:
A round too close to call. 9-9

Round 8:
Ali outboxes Bonavena with his jab as Bonavena starts breathing very heavily. 15-1

With more than half the bout gone my scorecard is: 78-74 for Ali

Round 9:
Ali opens a cut as blood comes from Bonavenas mouth. Ali wins the round rather easy. 15-5

Round 10:
Close round in the beggining until Ali starts some punishment of Bonavena. 14-7

Round 11:
Bonavena looks very tired and has trouble catching the speedy Ali. 13-2

Round 12:
An easy round for Ali, who is looking very good. 22-2

With three rounds to go i have it: 118-110 for Ali

Round 13:
Bonavena shows spirit as he fires very good shots. 10-12

Round 14:
Ali pounds Bonavena and worsens the cut in Bonvenas mouth and the ref steps between but lets the fight go on. 20-2

Before the last round i have it: 137-129 for Ali.

Round 15:
Ali punishes Bonavena and sends him down with a jab-hook combination. Then he pounds Bonavena, who is stopped with only three seconds to go of the round and the fight.

The winner by TKO 15 and still the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world is Muhammad Ali.

'The Greatest' moves to 40-1-0 (33) and can now choose to pick a free defence before meeting his mandatory WBO challenger whoever that will be. Oscar moves to 28-5-0 (24) but showed great heart and spirit.

End of 1970 April news

WBO has announced that their new #1 is Leotis Martin. This is not a surpise as he beat the #1 Buster Mathis in this month. This means that, in order for Muhammad Ali to keep his WBO belt, he must face Leotis sometime before November. Most people expect him to either face Joe Frazier, if Joe beats Jerry Quarry next month, or take an easy defence of his belts.

If Muhammad Ali should choose not to fight Leotis Martin right away, he will have to face the winner of the June fight between Al Jones and Mac Foster.

It has been rumoured that Oscar Bonavena will face fellow argentine Gregorio Peralta for a second fight, if he should beat Dave Zyglewicz

The ring top 10:
Muhammad Ali
Joe Frazier
Jerry Quarry
Leotis Martin
Buster Mathis
Oscar Bonavena
George Chuvalo
Gregorio Peralta
Larry Middleton
Al Jones

May fight night

Fight Night

IBF - Jerry Quarry v Joe Frazier
Gregorio Peralta v Dave Zyglewicz
Larry Middleton v Manuel Ramos III
Earnie Shavers v Piermario Baruzzi

Earnie Shavers 12-0-0 (11) v Piermario Baruzzi 9-1-0 (8), 10 rounds

This should prove to be another very tough test. Piermario holds a pretty impressive record with his only loss coming against George Foreman. As 8 of his 9 wins coming by way of stoppage he could have a good punch.

Earnie is the big favourite though.

Earnie shows up looking a bit overweight while Piermario has been rumoured to be partying too much.

1st round: Earnie starts out the fight landing bombs but Piermario goes through them and lands some good shots towards the end. 19-8

2nd: Piermario surprisningly keeps recovering and getting in his share of the shots. 16-8

3rd: The round is close but Earnis ends the round with style to win the round. 19-11

4th: Earnie dominates but Piermario takes it all. 16-6

5th: Earnie wins the round by landing more and harder, but Piermario keeps his fighting spirit high. 15-4

6th: Earnie lands a big hook and sends Piermario down. Piermario stands up but looks very hurt. 22-5

7th: Both miss alot but Earnie wins again. 8-4

8th: Both fighters looks tired and this seems to suit Piermario well as he wins the round. 5-12

With two round to go i have it: 79-72 for Earnie.

9th: A good round for Piermario as he starts getting in to the fight. Very close round. 11-13

10th: Earnie obviously wants a knockout as he goes all out for it. He just can't get the tough italian down and it goes to the scorecards. 18-2

I have it: 98-91 for Earnie

Scorecards are:
97-93
99-91
99-91

All for the winner by Unanimous decision.. Earnie Shavers

Earnie moves to 13-0-0 (11) after surprisingly not being able to stop Piermario. Piermario Baruzzi moves to 9-2-0 (8) but showed great spirit and heart.
