Selland Arena, Fresno, CA, USA Undercard: Larry Wills 5-5-2 (2) DQ 4 Michael Dokes 6-1-1 (4) Dokes had the fight in control, when he suddenly low blowed Wills and got disqualified. Stupid. Live Fight Bernardo Mercado 8-0 (7) vs Diego Mendicutti 21-20-1 (10) Pre Fight: Big test for my colombian fighter (i train him, remember). The tactics will be quite simple: Go straight at him. Mendicutti does not have any real punch or defense so we will try to wear him down and take him out on the inside. Round 1(Normal): Mercado puts Mendicutti down early with a hook. He is quickly up. Mercado lands another good hook. Mendicutti fights back with some good combos to the body. Mercado lands a short cross flush to put Mendicutti down once more. Once again, the argentine is up fast. 10-7 Mercado Round 2(Go for KO): Mercado gets inside and lands a sizzling hook to put Mendicutti down for the 3rd time. He shows heart, getting up again. Mercado pounds on, but the argentine survives. 20-16 Mercado Round 3(Fight inside): Some heavy exchanges end up with Mercado stunned. He lands well to win the round anyway. 30-25 Mercado Round 4(Go for KO): Mercado pounds Mendicutti and dominates him. 40-34 Mercado Round 5(Normal): Boring round, slight edge for the argentine. 49-44 Mercado Round 6(Inside): Mercado wins another slow going round. 59-53 Mercado. Round 7(Go for KO): Mercado hammers Mendicutti and puts him down. 69-61 Mercado Round 8(Go for KO): Mercado lands but can't hurt Mendicutti in the last round. 79-70 Mercado, i have it. We go to the scorecards: 79-69, 79-70 and 79-69. Easy win for my colombian warrior. Bernardo Mercardos record improves to 9-0, with 7 KOs. Diego Mendicuttis record falls to 21-21-1, with 10 KOs. Mendicutti announced his retirement after the fight. Stan Ward 10-1 (5) KO 2 Garth Grubb 23-24-3 (13) Ward didn't struggle as he needed only one good shot to knock Grubb out. Main Event (live): Earnie Shavers 30-2 (26) vs Boone Kirkman 28-8 (20) Pre Fight: Shavers and Kirkman have met twice before, with both ending in round 8-9 stoppages in favor of Shavers. He is favourite to replay that. Shavers was knocked down once in their previous meeting though. Shavers has twice challenge for a world title, losing both times, first against Foreman in a fantastic fight (KO 8) and later against Jimmy Young (UD 15). Prediction: Shavers KO 8 Titles at stake: None, but the winner will face George Foreman for the vacant WBA belt. Round 1: Shavers hurts Kirkman and wins the round big. 10-9 Shavers Round 2: Fantastic round as Shavers hurts Kirkman at first, but Boom Boom fights back and stuns Shavers several times. 19-19 Round 3: Shavers lands bombs, but Kirkman seems to take them well as he answers well with counters. 29-28 Shavers Round 4: Kirkman begins the round better, but Shavers hurts him near the end and opens a cut near his right eye. 39-37 Shavers Round 5: What seemed to be a one sided round for Shavers suddenly turned around as Kirkman hurt Shavers and almost sent him down. 49-47 Shavers Round 6: Shavers hurts Kirkman who keeps standing and throwing the occasional bomb. 59-56 Shavers Round 7: Kirkman looks tired and Shavers takes advantage by landing a short uppercut to knock him down. Kirkman is simply too tired to get up. Earnie Shavers KO 7 Boone Kirkman Kirkman gave it his all, but in the end, it was like one could have expected. Earnie Shavers improves to 31-2 (27) and is now set for a rematch against George Foreman for the vacant WBA title. Boone Kirkman falls to 28-9 (20).

The Olympia, London, UK Undercard: Albin Hjorth 8-0 (4) UD 6 Merrick Lach 0-2 The swede knocked Lach down three times and easily won the decision by the scores 60-53, 58-53 and 59-52 to keep his undefeated record. Eddie Neilson 22-3-1 (20) KO 6 David Mills 15-17-3 Neilson knocked Mills down twice before giving him the count. Timo Ahola 14-7 (6) UD 8 Richard Dunn 31-17-3 (9) Ahola had big trouble beating the aged Dunn, but a 3rd round KD secured him the scores of 77-74 and 76-75 twice. Main Event: Jose Luis Garcia 19-10-3 (13) TKO 4 Mike Schutte 22-6-1 (17) Big upset as this was only ment as a tune-up for Mike Schutte, for the April Commonwealth title bout versus Danny Ashton.

Polar Wawe Arena, Houston, TX, USA Co-Feature: Michael Spinks 2-0 (2) KO 4 Jose Medellin 3-13-1 Easy bout for Spinks who hammered Medellin before finally getting it over with in the 4th. Main Event: Gerrie Coetzee 15-4 (14) KO 2 Johnny Boudreaux 15-3-2 (2) The hard hitting Coetzee does short work of Boudreaux.

Fightnews George Foreman and Earnie Shavers to meet at Madison Square Garden, again 4 years and some months ago, George Foreman and Earnie Shavers, at the time both undefeated, had beat a fighter each to qualify themselves to meet eachother for the vacant WBA title. Foreman ended up kayoing Shavers in 8 rounds at the Madison Square Garden. On June 18th the two will once again meet for the vacant WBA title after having won their seperate semifinals. And guess what? They will be fighting in New York at the legendary Madison Square Garden. So far, everything has been replayed. Will the result repeat itself this June? Pre-Fight analysis: Jimmy Young vs Ron Lyle Only 4 days from now, on the coming saturday, the skillful boxer Jimmy Young (31-3, 10 KOs) will meet the fast and powerful slugger Ron Lyle (26-1, 23 KOs) in a bout to crown the new IBF champion of the world. Two quality fighters, with Young being the experienced one and the favourite due to his excellent, almost Ali-like, defense and accuracy against the more unknown Lyle, a great physical example, who though lacks quite a bit in the technical department. Looking at previous fights to compare, Jimmy Young is one of those whose level we know quite well. Of quality fighters he has faced, he gave Frazier hell twice, only to get stopped late. He fought an excellent fight against Norton, where only the latters endurance won him the fight via a decision. Those are his only losses. He has one victory that stands above the rest: A 15 round unanimous decision against The Black Destroyer, Earnie Shavers. Besides that he has wins against Buster Mathis, Pedro Agosto, Boone Kirkman, Jerry Quarry and Al Lewis. Ron Lyles one and only loss came in a massive upset against Larry Frazier. An 8th round UD, that shocked him and everyone who knew him as a fighter. Lyle has since then proven to be much better than that, defeating Mike Weaver by UD and knocking out Pedro Lovell and Dante Cane. Both in the 1st round. I have most factors pointing towards Youngs technical ability over Lyles physique, but it will definately not be one-sided and i am looking forward to this fight like a little kid waiting to open his christmas presents. Jeff Merritt looking at possibilities The current world #10 Jeff Merritt (31-10, 25 KOs) has finished his physical rebounding from his two previous losses at the hands of Ken Norton and Al Lewis, and is now looking for a foe for his next bout. So far three fighters seem to be battling for the fight against the top 10 heavyweight; Former EBU champ Giuseppe Ros (30-10, 13 KOs), Larry Frazier (22-5-1, 11 KOs) and Larry Duncan (21-9-1, 14 KOs). Similar for all of them, is their slight lack of real punching power. It seems he does not want to take the risk of getting knocket out. Ring Magazine rankings March 1977 CH: Vacant 1. Ken Norton 34-3 (29) 2. George Foreman 32-2 (32) 3. Earnie Shavers 31-2 (27) 4. Jimmy Young 31-3 (10) 5. Joe Bugner 31-9 (19) 6. Boone Kirkman 28-9 (20) 7. Ron Lyle 26-1 (23) 8. Al Lewis 32-7-2 (17) 9. Mike Weaver 24-2 (21) 10. Jeff Merritt 31-10 (25)

Championship event from Staples Center, Los Angeles, CA, USA Undercard: Rowan Fuller 10-21-6 (4) KO 2 Randall Cobb 2-1 (2) Massive upset! Cobb was expected to (supposed to) knock Fuller out and get another number on his record. Out of nowhere Fuller landed a combination flush and Cobb was out cold. Trevor Berbick 7-0 (5) KO 3 Ysmael Bulseco 5-11-5 (1) Berbick is looking more and more like a big prospect in the division as he shows good power and deternimation once again. Live fight: Bernardo Mercado 9-0 (7) vs David Nenarokov 7-3 (1) My colombian warrior faces the toughest test of his young career against the clever and tough russian boxer Nenarokov, whose only been stopped once, due to a cut, and never been down. The tactic will be to get inside and wear him down and take him out in the later rounds, due to his lack of endurance. Round 1 (Fight Inside): Mercado works the body and lands a wicked cross in a big round for him. 10-9 Mercado Round 2 (Fight Inside): Mercado can't find his rhythm and just barely loses the round. 19-19 Round 3 (Fight Inside): Mercado hammers Nenarokov and cuts him from the inside of his lip. Big round for Mercado. 29-28 Mercado Round 4 (Go For KO): The russian is tired and we go for the knockout. Mercado hurts Nenarokov then sends him down with a hard cross. He is up at the count of 6. 39-36 Mercado Round 5 (Go For KO): Mercado lands a big cross and sends the russian down again. Nenarokov is up at 7. 49-44 Mercado Round 6 (Go For KO): Nenarokov is getting more into the fight, but still loses the round. 59-53 Mercado Round 7 (Fight Inside): Nenarokov starts well, then tries to take a breather and is immediately punished and send to the floor again. This time he stays down. Bernardo Mercado KO 7 David Nenarokov The biggest test of Mercados career was no problem for him. He improves to 10-0 (8), while Nenarokov falls to 7-4 (1). ______________________________________ Main Event (live): Jimmy Young 31-3 (10) vs Ron Lyle 26-1 (23) Pre-fight: The first title bout since Ali abandonded all his belts is now here. The skillful and technically sound boxer Jimmy Young will meet the great physical example Ron Lyle. Hand/foot speed, accuracy and defense will meet physique, power and speed. I have Young a slight favourite due to him being more experienced and having proven more. Prediction: Jimmy Young UD 15 Titles at stake: The vacant IBF championship THE FIGHT Round 1: Young is working the jabs and the one-two well, while Lyle can't seem to land enough. 10-9 Jimmy Young Round 2: Lyle stuns Young with a violent hook early. Young regains his head and counters well a couple of times, before landing big with a combination. Both land a few jabs more. 20-18 Jimmy Young Round 3: Young keeps firing and landing while Lyle is very active, but only rarely land. This is looking good so far for Young. 30-27 Jimmy Young Round 4: Young lands light jabs and crosses at will, and Lyle seems confused by Young movement. Massive round for Young as he outlands Lyle 48-0. 40-36 Jimmy Young Round 5: Young is doing good with his lead right and stuns Lyle with an uppercut. Lyle works the body well, but is constantly countered. 50-45 Jimmy Young Round 6: Lyle comes out fast and lands a crushing hook. Young goes into clinch and is good to go again. Young lands a jab, but Lyle sees the opening and lands a big cross. Young defends himself till the end of the round. 59-55 Jimmy Young, first round for Ron Lyle. Round 7: Both men do well in the beginning. Young landing the jab, Lyle the body shots. Young gains control with his jab and one-two. Lyle ends the round with a solid hook. Too close to call that round, 69-65 Jimmy Young. Round 8: Lyle is beginning to look tired. Young lands a jab that draws blood from over Lyles right eye. The referee seems to wanna stop it, but in the end lets it go on. Young is in control with the fast jab, until suddenly Lyle lands a big hook. Young is staggered and Lyle lands a big uppercut. Young regains his head, and punished Lyle with fast combos to the head. 79-74 Jimmy Young Round 9: Lyle is being more active, while Young seems to wanna take a break. Lyle stuns Young with two nice uppercuts, and then a big body shot. Young answers but not enough to win the round. 88-84 Jimmy Young. Round 10: Lyle lands a big combination as Young seems to be opening up more and more. Young lands and seems to have regained control, when suddenly, he is pounden with another massive combo. 97-94 Jimmy Young, is he really letting Lyle back into the fight? Round 11: Lyle is very active, and manages to stun Young once more with a big uppercut. 106-104 Jimmy Young. This is getting exciting. Round 12: Youngs defense and countering is working again now. Lyle just can't land, while Youngs one-two is very effective. 116-113 Jimmy Young Round 13: Lyle stuns Young with a hard combination. Young is dazed as Lyle lands many quick shots! Young holds on and regains himself. Young lands a jab that worsens the cut above Lyles right eye. The ref goes into to take a look at it. He is shaking his head and wawing it off! Young is the winner. Jimmy Young TKO 13 (cuts) Ron Lyle Sad ending to a good, competative fight. Jimmy Young is the new IBF heavyweight champion of the world. Scores at time of the stoppage were 116-112 on all cards. Young seemed to dictate the fight, but Lyle managed to consistently stun him and keep himself in the fight. Jimmy Young improves to 32-3 (11). Ron Lyle falls to 26-2 (23).

Fightnews around the globe Jeff Merritt and Larry Frazier to meet for the vacant USBA title The wild slugger Jeff Merritt (31-10, 25 KOs), currently ranked #10 by the Ring, will meet the unknown man with the very known last name, Larry Frazier (22-5-1, 11 KOs). The bout will take place on Saturday the 23rd of July, and with the USBA (United States Boxing Association) belt on the line. The belt has been vacant since former world champ George Foreman resigned it to take part in the WBA tournament. Pre-Fight: Ken Norton vs Terry Daniels It came as a shock to many when it was announced that Ken Norton (34-3, 29 KOs) would meet Terry Daniels (28-6, 8 KOs) for the vacant WBC belt. It was (and is) the general consensus that Daniels had done nothing to deserve such a shot. A man whose biggest accomplishements are taking a shot Jerry Quarry the distance and losing, defeating an old Jurgen Blin and stopping journeyman Tony Ventura, surely will be no match for a world class fighter like Ken Norton. Norton has defeated plenty of other world class fighters, including Gregorio Peralta, Al Lewis, Leotis Martin, Al Lewis (twice), Joe Bugner and even the new IBF champ Jimmy Young. He is a former IBF and WBC champ aswell as the current IBO champ (although he is likely to be stripped of that title soon). He took Ali 15 rounds only to loose a split decision. Surely, Daniels will be no match for Norton. I predict: Ken Norton KO 1-3. Short news: The NABF title fight between Tony Ventura (27-14-3, 17 KOs) and Ted Gullick (24-10-2, 18 KOs) has been placed on the undercard of the Foreman-Shavers fight to be fought June 18th. Rumours have undefeated olympic gold medalist Larry Holmes (20-0, 18 KOs) fighting british Eddie Neilson (23-3-1, 21 KOs) soon. Aussie Ted Gray (18-5-3, 8 KOs) insists that he become the mandatory challenger for Fonomanu Sekona (24-6, 16 KOs), the new OPBF champ. IBO (Internation Boxing Organisation) threadens Ken Norton (34-3, 29 KOs) with stripping him of his title, should he not defend his title against mandatory Ron Lyle (26-2, 23 KOs) before September this year. RING Magazine rankings as of March 1977 CH: Vacant 1. Ken Norton 34-3 (29) 2. George Foreman 32-2 (32) 3. Earnie Shavers 31-2 (27) 4. Jimmy Young 32-3 (11), IBF champ 5. Joe Bugner 31-9 (19) 6. Boone Kirkman 28-9 (20) 7. Al Lewis 32-7-2 (17) 8. Mike Weaver 24-2 (21) 9. Ron Lyle 26-2 (23) 10. Jeff Merritt 31-10 (25)

Michael Dokes 8-1-1 (5) KO 5 Klaus Gerhard Moeller 22-25-2 (9) Dokes scored KD's in 2nd 4th and two in 5th. George Chaplin 4-0-1 (1) Draw (m) Olo Potaka 20-20-4 (4) Dissapointing for Chaplin. Scores were 76-76 on two cards and 77-76 for Chaplin on one. Scott LeDoux 13-1 (8) TKO 6 Natsu Samurakami 12-6 LeDoux scored KDs in round 2 and 6. Scores at the time of the stoppage read 48-46 for LeDoux on all cards. Co-Feature: Kevin Isaac 19-3 (5) UD 10 Lou Esa 6-5 (2) Isaac takes an easy fight after defeating Boddington. The fight was surprisingly close (and boring) as the scores read 96-95 twice and 97-94 all for Isaac. Main Event: Duane Bobick 18-1 (14) TKO 8 Seppo Karjalainen 11-14-6 (2) Bobick dominated the finn completely as he won every round up till the stoppage. Bobick scored a KD in the 2nd.

Everton Park Sports Centre, Liverpool, UK Del Phillips 23-10-3 (7) TKO 9 Peter Boddington 29-10-1 (21) Del Phillips is the new BBBofC heavyweight champion. Phillips outboxed Boddington and wore him down brick by brich. He gave only one or two rounds away. Boddington was done by the 8th round and Phillips used it to first KD him in that same round, then hammer him for the referee to correctly stop the bout. Mike Schutte 23-6-1 (18) TKO 7 Danny Ashton 11-1-1 (7) Mike Schutte is the new Commomwealth heavyweight champion. Schutte demolished Ashton completely. He hammered him from the opening bell, before Ashton finally was stopped by the ref in round 7 afre being KD'ed.

Championship Event from Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, NV, USA Undercard: Michael Spinks 3-0 (2) UD 6 Eusebio Machado 18-22-3 (3) Machado was cut in the 2nd and knocked down in the 5th. Scores read 59-54 twice and 58-55 for Michael Spinks. Trevor Berbick 8-0 (5) UD 6 Nien Nguyen-Khoa 2-2 (1) Berbick had an easy night, fighting at his own pace, turning it up and down at will. He knocked Nien down twice just to seal an already secure victory. Two judges scored it 60-52, and one judge, in the name of charity, scored it 59-53. Pedro Lovell 24-8 (21) TKO 7 Domenico Adinolfi 26-11 (13) Lovell dominated the fight with his bombs, and knocked Adinolfi down twice. The stoppage was premature though as the round was fairly even and Lovell was missing with most of his shots. Scorecards at time of the stoppage were 60-52 twice and 59-53 for Lovell. Leroy Jones 19-1-1 (4) SD 10 Jean-Pierre Coopman 16-10 (5) Jones struggled with Coopmans counter-style and you can't help but escape the feel of robbery. I had it 97-94 for the belgian. The judges had it 97-94 Jones, 96-95 Jones and 96-95 Coopman. Not impressive from Jones, or the judges, for that matter. Co-Feature: Dwain Bonds 11-5 (4) KO 4 Fred Houpe 17-1 (15) Definate nominee for Upset of the Year. Houpe struggled in the first two rounds, but totally controlled the 3rd. He started the 4th well too, when Bonds landed a wicked uppercut, out of nowhere, to knock Houpe out cold. Hell of a way to lose your undefeated record. A rematch is being called for. ___________________________________ Main Event (live): Ken Norton 34-3 (29) vs Terry Daniels 28-7 (8) Pre-Fight: The odds says it all: 1-17 for Norton. Noone, maybe with the exception of Daniels' mother, believes that TX can actually pull of an upset. Norton is simply twice as good in every department. Sure enough, Daniels has fast hands and is fairly accurate. But what happens the second he is hit? Norton has just as fast hands and hits much, much harder than anyone Daniels has ever faced before. And he has been stopped three times. Daniels chin is nothing to talk about, in fact, it is very questionable (KO 3 Merritt, KO 5 Gullick and TKO 1 Foreman). Fightnews around the globe Jimmy Young calls for rematch with Ken Norton The newly crowned IBF heavyweight champion, Jimmy Young (32-3, 11 KOs), ranked #4 by the RING, is clamoring for a rematch and unification bout with the WBC and IBO champ Ken Norton (35-3, 30 KOs) who is currently ranked #1 by the RING: "I gave him a tough fight last time around, and i have improved alot since then. Just see how i stopped Ron Lyle. I hope he will man up and give me the chance to whoop his ass". Norton himself is fairly dismissing of a such fight: "I beat him fair and square last time. I outworked him and sent him to the canvas. I am moving to bigger challengers. Maybe i will fight him again in the future, but for now, i have better fights on my hands". Last time the two fought were for the IBO belt, back in February of 1976. The fight was very even, until Young simply wore out. Norton knocked him down twice during the last 5 rounds on his way to a clear unanimous decision. The WBO-quarterfinals We have an exciting month of boxing coming up, headlined by the four quarterfinal fights in the tournament to crown a new WBO champ. On the 7th, Al Lewis (32-7-2, 17 KOs), ranked #7 by the RING, will meet unnoticed Mike Boswell (25-5, 19 KOs), not ranked in the top 10. Also on the 7th; undefeated 1972 olympic gold medalist Larry Holmes (20-0, 18 KOs) is facing the somewhat dull, but technically sound walesman Dennis Avoth (28-8-4, 1 KO) who is also the former Commonwealth and BBBofC champ. The on the 14th, we have another two fights. The first, between former EBU champ and two-time world title challenger, Joe Bugner (31-9, 19 KOs), ranked #5 by the RING, and inexperienced Ibar Arrington (14-0-2, 3 KOs) in what many expect to be a mismatch in favor of the englishmen. The second fight is between "Hercules" Mike Weaver (24-2, 21 KOs) and the somewhat over the hill, but still hard-hitting italian, Dante Cane (39-13-1, 31 KOs), who has been in 4 EBU title fights, but only won one. Short news: Following a knockout loss against Earnie Shavers (31-2, 27 KOs) in the WBA tournament semifinal, Boone Kirkman (28-9, 20 KOs), is going for another title fight. He mentions Jimmy Youngs IBF title as a possibility. Ron Lyle (26-2, 23 KOs), currently ranked #9 by the RING, has stated that he hopes Ken Norton (35-3, 30 KOs) decides to defend his IBO title against himself, instead of just being stripped of the title. Lyle also stated his belief in the possibility of defeating the current ring #1. The current ABU and Commonwealth champ, Mike Schutte (23-6-1, 18 KOs) will both of his belts against ABU mandatory Gerrie Coetzee (15-4, 14 KOs). This will be a rematch of the June 1976, where Coetzee was stopped in round 12 of 12. Argentine Pedro Lovell (24-8, 21 KOs) and colombian Jose Luis Garcia (19-10-3, 13 KOs) will meet eachother in this September to crown a new LABA champ. The crown has been vacant since fan favourite Pedro Agosto retired. RING Magazine rankings 77-05 CH: Vacant 1. Ken Norton 35-3 (30), WBC champ 2. George Foreman 32-2 (32) 3.
