Larry Middleton 26-1-0 (8) v Manuel Ramos 26-11-2 (13), 10 rounds

The third fight between the two as Manuel won the first and Larry the second. Larry is a top 10 fighter while Manuel is not even in the top 40, so this fights has nothing to do with rankings. It's all about Larrys pride and will to prove that he is better than Manuel.

Both are in top shape.

1st: Very close round that Larry wins with more accurate punches. 13-9

2nd: Manuel hurts Larry and is very close to stopping him but gets a bit wild and Larry looks good towards the end. 6-23

3rd: Larry wins the round but Manuel opens a cut above Larrys right eye. 13-10

4th: Larry wins the round as he makes it hard for Larry. 8-3

5th: A good round for Larry as he hurts Manuel. 26-3

6th: Larry wins another round but he doesn't get it the easy way. 13-5

7th: Manuel looks tired and Larry gets an easy round. 11-2

8th: A boring round with a few Larry jabs and crosses and a lot of clinching. 5-0

With two round to go i have it: 79-73 for Larry Middleton

9th: Larry lands a good combo followed by an uppercut that sends Ramos down. Manuel just barely gets up at the 9 count and the fight continues. 20-2

Manuel will need a knockout to win

10th: Larry wins a close round. 11-7

I have it: 99-90 for Larry Middleton

Scorecards are:
99-90
99-90
99-90

All for the winner by unanimous decision, Larry Middleton.

Larry finally proved that he is superior to Manuel as he moves to 27-1-0 (8). Manuel moves to 26-12-2 (13)

Gregorio Peralta 32-9-1 (20) v Dave Zyglewicz 25-4-0 (19)

It has been rumoured that a win here will secure Gregorio a rematch with Oscar Bonavena.

Gregorio the 3 to 1 favourite.

Both show up in top shape.

1st: Dave wins with harder shots. 9-12

2nd: Gregorio can't really keep Dave away and starts slugging with him. That's probably a mistake as that is Daves best chance of winning this. 9-9

3rd: Peralta continues looking slow and is losing rounds. 7-13

4th: Dave continues to pressure Peralta very well and wins another round. 6-14

5th: First good round for Peralta as he starts boxing instead of slugging. 12-2

6th: Gregorio wins a close round as both fighters starts to look tired. 12-10

7th: Very close round. 9-8.

8th: A big action round between two tired fighters. 12-12

9th: Dave might have won it as he lands the harder punches, even thought Gregorio landed 4 more punches than him. 10-12

Before the last round i have it: 87-86 for Dave Zyglewicz, but many rounds could be going both ways.

10th: Both go all out for a knockout in a fantastic round. 12-17

I have it 97-95 for Dave Zyglewicz.

Scorecards:
97-95
98-97
98-93

All for the winner by unanimous decision..

Dave Zyglewicz!

Dave wins in a big upset that noone really expected as most already looked forward to seeing Bonavena v Peralta II.

Dave moves his record to 26-4-0 (19) and might be back in the top 10. Gregorio moves to 32-10-1 (20) as he kinda' looked old and shot here tonight.

IBF Championship - Jerry Quarry 27-0-0 (22) v Joe Frazier 25-2-0 (24), 15 rounds

Jerry shows great courage taking this fight against one of the very best fighters around. Joe has beat so many of the greatest around. Ernie Terrell, Doug Jones, Oscar Bonavena, Gregorio Peralta, Buster Mathis and not to mention his victory against 'The Greatest' Muhammad Ali. Both of his losses has come against Muhammad Ali. The last fight has already become legendary as Frazier was actually in front on the scorecards before he got stopped in the 8th.

Jerry Quarry also holds a couple of impressive wins. He has beaten Henry Clark twice, stopped Jimmy Ellis in the first, and beat Al Jones, Dave Zyglewicz and Mac Foster impressively.

Joe Frazier is the 2 to 1 favourite as he is expected to be stronger, faster and better. Jerrys heart and skill should be a factor though.

Both show in good shape.

1st: Back and forth action from the beginning until Jerry suddenly sends Joe down. He gets up but this might very well be the big chance for Jerry to win this. Jerry lands a hard jab followes by a hard hook. Frazier survives. 19-7

2nd: Now Joe comes back as he hurts Jerry and also lands some good body punches. 2-19

3rd: Close back and forward action round. Both land their best punches. 13-12

4th: Jerry lands the combos with impressive speed to win the round. 17-8

5th: Frazier starts stronger but Jerry comes back with a good combo. In the end Jerry hurts Frazier but doesn't have time enough to send him down. 15-11

6th: Joe throws wicked punches but Jerry recovers amazingly quick everytime. Joe did though win the round. 10-20

7th: Joe pounds a defenseless Jerry Quarry as the fight rightly is stopped here in the 7th. A bit of a dissapointment though as Jerry was fighting back very well and it would have been fun to see these two in the championship rounds.

Joe Frazier TKO 7 Jerry Quarry to win the IBF Championship belt.

Smokin' Joe moves to 26-2-0 (25) with another knockout win against a top, top fighter. Jerry Quarry moves to 27-1-0 (22) but gave a pretty good showing.

End of 1970 May news

Muhammad Ali and his management has announced that he will defend his WBA, WBC and WBO belts against Henry Clark in July. Experts consider this to be an easy defence, but most think he has deserved it taking into consideration who he has fought lately. Chuvalo, Peralta, Bonavena and Joe Frazier are just some of the impressive opponents he has on his list. This will be the second shot at a world title for Henry Clark as he lost by 5th round knockout against Jerry Quarry in October 1969. Henry Clark (29-6-1 with six stoppages) holds wins against fighters such as Gerhard Zech, Jurgen Blin, Manuel Ramos and Pedro De Agosto.

Joe Frazier announced one day later that he will defend his IBF Title on the same card. He will face his mandatory challenger, Leotis Martin (30-7-1 with 17 stoppages) who Ali opted not to fight. This could possibly lead to a 4th fight between the two.

The promoters of Larry Middleton and Buster Mathis were present as a contract for a fight between the two in August were signed. This is a huge step up for Larry as he for the first time aren't the favourite against Buster Mathis.

Jimmy Ellis 39-11-0 (16) has retired

The ring top 10:
Muhammad Ali
Joe Frazier
Leotis Martin
Jerry Quarry
Buster Mathis
Oscar Bonavena
George Chuvalo
Larry Middleton
Al Jones
Mac Foster

Fight Night

1970-06-11 - Maple Leaf Gardens, Canada

George Chuvalo v Manfred Markgraf
Al Jones v Mac Foster

Al Jones 25-3-0 (5) v Mac Foster 24-2-2 (20), 10 rounds - NABF eliminator

The winner of this bout will be secured a shot at Leotis Martin, and if he as expected gets stripped after choosing to fight Joe Frazier for the IBF belt, the winner of this will face the #1 NABF. Who that is only time can tell.

The fight is a typical boxer v puncher as Al Jones will probably try to outbox the hard hitting Mac Foster who has been in trouble against good boxers before and could be again.

Both show up in top shape.

1st: Al Jones outboxes a confused looking Mac Foster in the first. 12-0

2nd: A more close round but Al wins it by landing more. 7-4

3rd: Mac Foster does a smart thing as he throws a hard punch every time Al throws a punch. 12-13

4th: Mac Foster hurts Al Jones with a combination and is fast to follow up. He then pounds Al to win the round big. 6-29

5th: It starts out close but a good combo by Jones at the end wins it for him. 10-6

6th: A very close round with neither timing their shots well. 5-5

7th: It starts out close, right until Foster lands his hook to send Jones down. He is quickly up but he looks shaken. Foster fails to follow up. 0-14

8th: Both fighters are tiring out and aren't too active. 9-5

With two rounds to go i have it: 76-75 for Mac Foster

9th: Another round where neither fighter can't really find the mark anymore. 6-7

10th: Al is winning the round pretty clearly when the ref suddenly stops it 17 seconds before the end. He wants it to go to the scorecards already. He must've made a mistake or something.

I have it: 75-74 for Mac Foster.

Scorecards:
96-95 for Al Jones
95-94 for Mac Foster
95-94 for the winner by split decision..
Al Jones!

A rather close split decision, but it was a tough one to call and many rounds were too close to call so it wasn't too controversial.

Al Jones moves to 26-3-0 (5) and is now secured a NABF title shot even if Leotis is stripped. Mac Foster moves to 24-3-2 (20) and might be out of the top 10.

George Chuvalo 35-9-0 (26) v Manfred Markgraf 22-3-1 (2)

George Chuvalo lost his last fight against Leotis Martin and this looks to be an easy fight to possibly get himself another title shot. Manfred does have some good wins though. Names like Manuel Ramos, Pedro Agosto, Alejandro Lavorante and Amos Johnson aren't that bad. His losses has come against journeyman Paul Konowalchuk, Dante Cane and Roy Williams.

Both are in top shape.

1st: Chuvalo starts out by opening a cut outside Markgrafs left eyebrow and this could be alot of trouble for Markgraf. Chuvalo hurts Markgraf but then gets a bit wild. 14-0

2nd: Chuvalo once again hurts the german, but this time he recovers quickly and counters nicely. 14-8

3rd: Chuvalo wins a close round. 10-7

4th: Chuvalo hurts Markgraf again but he gamely fights back. 12-5

5th: Best round so far for the german as he keeps the canadian away from him. 6-12

6th: Markgraf is doing good as he counters right until he gets a bit overconfident and is send down by a big hook. He shows heart by getting up. 15-10

7th: What a round! Both lands big punches and Markgraf walks through massive punishment only to keep landing his fast combos. 20-14

8th: Chuvalo reopens the germans cut in a close round. 6-8

9th: Chuvalo clearly wins by outlanding him 22 to 6.

10th: Chuvalo sends the german down, but he gets up. After a good punch he is send down again. He gets up again though. He pounds the defensless german until the fight is stopped here in the 10th.

George Chuvalo TKO 10 Manfred Markgraf

George Chuvalo moves to 36-9-0 (27) and could get another title shot. If not at a world title then he might get the shot at the NABF title. Manfred Markgraf moves to 22-4-1 (2)

George Foreman 12-0-0 (12) v Roger Russell 22-4-0 (2), 10 rounds

This looks to be Foremans toughest test as Roger is a top fighter who has faced and also beat some very good fighters. His losses has come against Oscar Bonavena, Jurgen Blin, Dave Zyglewicz and Jack Bodell, but he holds wins over Dante Cane, George 'Scrap Iron' Johnson and Billy Daniels. Currently he is on a 7 fight winning streak. Roger is a very skilled boxer that should give the up and coming prospect some problems. George Foreman has been very impressive so far, with some frightening stoppages of Jose Luis Garcia, Piermario Baruzzi and Franco DePiccoli. This is his first ever 10 rounder.

Both are in top shape.

1st: It's is fairly even until Foreman lands one of his frightening hooks and then pounds on and Russell is very lucky to have survived this. 28-7

2nd: Foremans strengh just seems too much for Russell. 21-5

3rd: Foreman opens a cut above Russells right eye. with a big counter shot. Foreman dishes out some brutal punishment, but Russell amazingly recovers and is clearly better toward the end. 15-8

4th: Foreman sends Russell down with a right cross. Russell just can't regain his legs and he is counted out here in the 4th.

George Foreman KO 4 Roger Russell

George Foreman moves to 13-0-0 (13) after an impressive showing of power and strength. Roger Russell moves to 22-5-0 (2).

EBU Championship - Billy Walker 36-5-1 (30) v Dante Cane 24-4-0 (19), 12 rounds

After Billy losing against Al Jones in his big step up he is focusing on his European Championship. Dante Cane has a good punch and should be a tough one for Billy Walker.

Both are in top shape.

1st: A close round. 10-12

2nd: Dante Cane clearly wins it. 0-12

3rd: Another close actionfilled round. 11-12

4th: Billy Walker is send down by an uppercut from Dante Cane. That's it, he is counted out.

Dante Cane KO 4 Billy Walker.

Dante Cane is the new EBU champ as he moves to 25-4-0 (20) while Billy Walker moves to 36-6-1 (30).

IBF Championship - Joe Frazier 26-2-0 (25) v Leotis Martin 30-7-1 (17), 15 rounds

Leotis became mandatory WBO and IBF by beating Buster Mathis. Muhammad Ali chose to fight Henry Clark instead since he had one last optional available. Joe Frazier though didn't since he has just won his belt, but he did make a big statement by fighting the man Ali didn't want to fight.

Both are in top shape.

1st: Frazier is best as he hurts Leotis, who keeps fighting back, several times. 22-11

2nd: A close actionfilled round. 13-11

3rd: Frazier wins a close round. 13-9

4th: Frazier opens a cut above Martins left eye with a hook that at the samt time stuns him. 23-5

5th: A fantastic round for Leotis as he truly gives it his all. 10-27

6th: Leotis Martin is very good once again as he upsets the world by pounding a defenseless Joe Frazier to make the ref stop the fight here!

Leotis Martin TKO 6 Joe Frazier

What a stunner! This might be the biggest upset i've seen so far! I thought Leotis could make things hard for Joe, but stop him? It might have been a smart move from Ali, choosing not to fight him.

Leotis is the new IBF world champion as he moves to 31-7-1 (18) while Joe Frazier moves to 26-3-0 (25) and has now been beaten by someone who isn't Muhammad Ali.

This was a real upset.

Muhammad Ali 40-1-0 (33) v Henry Clark 29-6-1 (6), 15 rounds.

WBA/WBC/WBO titles are at stake.

Most believe that this will be an easy W for Ali. Henry Clark should not be laughed at though. He has stopped Jimmy Ellis. He has beaten Amos Johnson. He has beaten Manuel Ramos. He has beaten Franco DePiccoli. In 5th round KO loss against Jerry Quarry he was ahead on all three scorecards when he was stopped.

Both are in top shape.

1st: Ali outboxes Clark with nice combinations. 17-5

2nd: Henry Clark doesn't make it easy for Ali but he does lose the round though. 17-8

3rd: Ali opens a cut under Henrys left eye and easily wins the round. 19-4

4th: Henry Clark is gamely fighting back but just can't adjust to the speed of Ali. 14-6

5th: More of the same. 16-5

6th: Ali lands more, harder and better. 19-7

7th: Clark starts well, but Alis speed wins another round. 17-5

8th: Clark is looking tired and Ali doesn't do anything more than enough to win the rounds. 12-4

9th: Clark is still taking massive punishment but not really landing very much himself. 18-1

10th: Clark just can't catch Ali. 14-0

11th: Ali is giving Clark a boxing lesson here. 23-6

12th: More of the same. 15-4

13th: Henrys best round, and he probably didn't even win it. 10-6

With two rounds to go i have it: 130-117 for Ali.

14th: A very close round and Clark actually opens a cut above Alis right eye, this could be some interesting two rounds. A actionfilled round. 14-13

15th: A very very boring round as not a single punch has landed. Ali was smart and just covered up to make sure he'd win this. 0-0

I have it: 149-136 for Muhammad Ali

Scorecards:
147-139
149-136
150-135

All for the winner by unanimous decision.. and still undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.. Muhammad Ali!

With that boxing lesson Muhammad Ali moves to 41-1-0 (33) and will now have to meet his WBO mandatory in order to keep his belt. Henry Clark moves to 29-7-1 (6) but showed great heart.

End of 1970 July news

WBO has announced that the winner of Buster Mathis v Larry Middleton will be the mandatory challenger and therefore Muhammad Ali will have to face the winner sometime before November.

The IBF has announced their rankigs as of July. #1 is Joe Frazier but since he lost his last fight he can not become mandatory. #2 Jerry Quarry but he has also lost his last bout. #3 is Al Jones, but he has a NABF fight planned. #4 Buster Mathis has a WBO eliminator against Larry Middleton. So therefore their mandatory is George Chuvalo. It is also notable that George Foreman 13-0-0 (13) has made it to spot #15.

A few weeks later the new IBF champ, Leotis Martin, annouced that he will face George Chuvalo in January next year. That will mean six months from his fight against Joe Frazier to the fight against George Chuvalo. The rules say that you have to defend against a mandatory in at least six months of winning the belt, so he just barely meets the rules.

Oscar Bonavena has announced that he will fight a rematch with Gregorio Peralta in December this month. The LABA title and the Argentine championship will be on the line.

The ring top 10:
Muhammad Ali
Leotis Martin
Joe Frazier
Jerry Quarry
Buster Mathis
Al Jones
George Chuvalo
Oscar Bonavena
Larry Middleton
Dave Zyglewicz

Wow! Leotis Martin's TKO in 6 of Joe Frazier is what makes this game great, as upsets do occur! And the fact that he had to dip down for his mandatory defense was interesting as well.

I'm wondering how Mel Turnbow got to 19-12-2! That's impressive considering his history from the board game.

Mel Turnbow has for a long time not been good enough to make it into the TOP group, meaning that he mostly fights tc's or prospects. He is in the TOP group now though after a couple of wins over tc's.

I'm happy to see Mel in the TOP group, where his record will get worse fast. In the board game, there was almost no one he could beat (he was 1 and a lot for me). he was the ultimate symbol for futility, but a number of us became fans of this ultimate underdog!

Here, there are enough other tomato cans that he has a reasonable chance of winning against (he went 4-2 in my level 1 tournament, and I'm going to keep that mini-universe going). I'm thrilled to see so many extra fighters, as Mel has chances at winning. Still, I'll bet his losses will now mount in this universe.

I really have enjoyed this, as the 60s and 70s were great times for me to follow boxing. There is a good mix of talented fighters below Ali and Frazier, and Leotis proved that, on any given day, a big boy can be beaten!
