Fight Night
1970-08-12 - Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids, MI Buster Mathis 27-3-0 (7) v Larry Middleton 27-1-0 (8), 10 round WBO eliminator We are in Buster Mathis' hometown of Grand Rapids for this eliminator to decide who Muhammad Ali will have to face before November in order to keep his WBO belt. This is expected to be a close fight, with to good boxers without particular power. Two fighters with a very similar style, as they both defend and counter with combinations. Buster Mathis is the small favourite though as he has some better wins than Larry. Geroge Chuvalo, Henry Clark and Leotis Martin are impressive opponents. His losses has come against Leotis Martin twice and Joe Frazier. Larry has beat fighters such as Roy Williams, Doug Jones, George 'Scrap Iron' Johnson and Dave Zyglewicz. His loss has come against Manuel Ramos, a loss he has revenged twice with victories. Both show up in top shape. 1st: Mathis only needs a minute to open a cut above Middletons right eye as he clearly wins the round. 14-1 2nd: Larry is the agressor and both lands and misses more to win the round. 5-14 3rd: A close 3rd where Larry presses the action but Mathis lands more. 6-5 4th: A very actionfilled round that Larry Middleton gets the better of. 11-19 5th: Buster wins a close slow round. 6-4 6th: A nice round of action but Larry just seems to win the round by being the more active fighter. 8-12 7th: Middleton is winning the round, but Buster reopens his cut. Larry still wins the round clearly though. 5-12 8th: The round is too close to call, but Larrys cut is worsening. 10-10 With two rounds to go i have it: 77-76 for Larry Middleton 9th: Buster Mathis lands a few good shots, and the ref steps in as he looks at the cut above Larry Middletons right eye. He then talks a bit with the ringside doctor and Larrys corner and the ref waves his arms and stops the fight. Buster Mathis TKO 9 cuts Larry Middleton. Buster becomes mandatory WBO challenger as he moves to 28-3-0 (8) while Larry Middleton moves to 27-2-0 (8) and his 13 fight winning streak is stopped, but he looked very good and might have been able to win this. |

Fight Night
1970-09-29 - Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA Jerry Quarry 27-1-0 (22) v Al Jones 26-3-0 (5), 12 Round NABF championship fight We are in 'Irish Jerry' Quarrys hometown of Los Angeles as he rebounds from his loss in his latest fight against Joe Frazier. Al Jones beat Mac Foster by a Split Decision to get this title shot. The two fighters has met once before in an IBF title defence for Jerry Quarry. Jerry won by UD 15. Both show up in top shape. 1st: Al Jones starts the round by boxing very well but then Jerry gets on the inside to win the round with superior speed and power. 13-7 2nd: Same story. Al Jones boxes well in the beginning but the second Jerry gets close to him, he is stronger and faster. 12-9 3rd: Close round, with Jerry outlanding Al 24-20. 7-8 4th: Smooth boxing round from Al Jones. 4-11 5th: Very close round, Jerry looks good on the inside but he has a hard time getting there. 10-8 6th: Al Jones is looking very good in boxing. 4-15 7th: Another good round from Al, as he is very good in his defense. 2-8 8th: The round seems close until Jerry stuns Jones towards the end. 11-5 9th: Al Jones is very impressive as he evens opens a cut in Jerrys mouth. 3-21 10th: It seems like Al Jones is simply superior here today. 3-11 With two rounds to go i have it: 96-94 for Al Jones 11th: Jerry starts well, until Al Jones gets a distance to Jerry and easily lands combinations. 12-12 12th and final round: What a round! High action, Close until Al Jones hurts Jerry with sharp and stinging combinations to win the round clearly. 10-20 I have it: 116-112 for Al Jones. Scorecards are: 118-111 for Al Jones 114-114 even 116-114 for .. Al Jones! Al Jones becomes new NABF champ with MD 10 against Jerry Quarry. This was quite an upset, not a big one though. Al Jones moves to 27-3-0 (5) after an impressive showing of smooth boxing. Jerry Quarry moves to 27-2-0 (22) and has now lost two in a row. |

End of 1970 september news
NABF has allowed Al Jones to fight a rematch against Jerry Quarry for his first defence. Al Jones quickly accepted this and a third fight between the two rivals is arranged for February next year. Jerry Quarry won the first by UD 15 and Al Jones won the second by MD 12.
Figther profile: George Foreman 15-0-0 (15) This young prosect has been cruising along against competition that would make most youngsters go down fast. Fighters like Franco DePiccoli, Roger Russell and Bobby Halpern are not usual for a fighter at this point in his career. His power has been frightening and his ability to finish a hurt opponent is one of the things that makes George a fighter to look out for. The last fighter to have won this many consecutive fights by Knockout was Joe Frazier and George is already #2 on that list. Joe Frazier at #1 has 21 against Foremans 15. Also it is notable that he has hit the rankings. He is #11 in Nabf and #10 in USBA. In the world rankings he is; #14 IBF & WBA, #15 WBC & WBO and is therefore already eligible for world fights. He should not expect to get a chance already though as it is not very probable that anybody will fight this frightening figure in an optional defence. Fight Night
1970-11-28 - Rand Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa Muhammad Ali 41-1-0 (33) v Buster Mathis 28-3-0 (8), 15 rounds for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world. Titles at stake: WBA, WBC and WBO Muhammad Ali stated that he wanted to fight Buster in his Africa. The biggest stadium in africa is the Rand Stadium so therefore it was very logical to fight it here. Buster Mathis beat Larry Middleton in august to become WBO mandatory so in order for Ali to keep his WBO belt he had to take this fight in this very month. Muhammad is the big favourite here as the general opinion is that he will stop him early. As Buster doesn't have big power or is anywhere near Ali's speed, it is hard to see what he could possibly do to win this. Both are in top shape. 1st: Ali dominates and hurts Mathis to win the round clearly. 16-2 2nd: Close actionfilled round where Ali outlands Mathis 40-37. 13-11 3rd: Mathis looks very good as Ali gets inactibe. 4-11 4th: Ali punishes Mathis brutally. 22-2 5th: Ali dominates and sends Mathis down for the count. Buster Mathis can't regain his legs and is counted out. Muhammad Ali KO 5 Buster Mathis Muhammad Ali moves to 42-1-0 (34) as he easily won his mandatory defense. Buster Mathis moves to 28-4-0 (8) Impressive perfomance by Ali. |

Once 2.5 comes out, I hope to be able to match up 2 of Baltimore's best heavies, Larry Middleton and George Chaplin. George twice came within a whisker of beating Greg Page, and was an underrated counterpuncher who worked by day and fought by night or on the weekend. I have him in my game, but have rated him a bit higher than the database guys have done for 2.5 (alas, their rating is no doubt more accurate as they know a lot more about rating fighters than I do). |

Mel doesn't seem to fare too badly against boxers, and I was glad to see that you bolded his August win over Jack Bodell, as it helped old eyes like mine. A 20-12-2 record exceeds my wildest expectations! Then again, with some judicious scheduling, he might get there in my level 0/1 universe!

Dante Cane won the title against Billy Walker by completely dominating him and never giving the brit a chance. Dante Cane is the 7 to 2 favourite. Both show up in top shape. Jurgen Blin edges two actionfilled first rounds. Dante Cane wins a close 3rd. Jurgen wins a boring 4th. Dante Cane wins a close 5th. 6th is very boring and too close to call. Jurgen edges out the 7th and 8th. Dante Cane wins an actionfilled 9th. 10th is too close to call. Two rounds to go and i have it: 97-95 for Jurgen Blin 11th is too close to call. Jurgen edges a close 12th. I have it: 117-114 for the challenger Jurgen Blin Scorecards: 116-113 for Dante Cane 120-110 for Jurgen Blin 118-112 for the winner by split decision.. and NEW EBU champ.. Jurgen Blin! Very weird scorecards. How you could get 116-113 for Dante Cane or 120-110 for Jurgen Blin is a mystery. Jurgen Blin is new EBU champ and moves to 25-7-0 (6) while Dante Cane moves to 25-5-0 (20). Main Event Oscar Bonavena 28-5-0 (24) v Gregorio Peralta 33-10-1 (21), 12 rounds for the LABA and Argentine championships. A rematch between the two Argentine rivals after Oscar defeating him by KO 11 the first time. Both are top contenders who used to be higher in the ranks than they are at the moment. Both have met many top contenders. They have both met Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier to mention two of the biggest stars in the sport. Both are in top shape. 1st: Very close round. 8-7 2nd: Bonavena hurts Peralta early, but Peralta recovers with supreme boxing and fast hands in an exciting round. 12-18 3rd: Peralta makes Bonavenas nose bleed. End of 1970 December news
Muhammad Ali (42-1-0 with 34 stoppages) has made the world await once again as he announced that he will fight Joe Frazier (26-3-0 with 25 stoppages) for the fourth time if he as expected beats Boone Kirkman (18-1-0 with 11 stoppages) who probably won't be much of a challenge to Smokin' Joe. Joe Frazier lost an upset TKO 6 against Leotis Martin to lose his IBF title but should he win he would probably be the mandatory challenger once again. As Muhammad has to face his mandatory before April next year this will also fulfill that.
Oscar Bonavena v Gregorio Peralta III has been announced for April next year. The first fight between the two ended in a KO 11 win for Bonavena. The second fight ended in a TKO 5 for Gregorio Peralta. This should once and for all settle who the better fighter is. Dave Zyglewicz will fight Roger Russell in March. Dave is on a good streak with wins over Gregorio Peralta, Chuck Wepner and Jan Lubbers. Roger Russell got back into the picture by beating Mac Foster in an upset. George 'Scrap Iron' Johnson 32-20-0 (11) has retired. One time in his career he was a top contender and holds victories against Robert Cleroux, Leotis Martin, Tony Alongi, Oscar Bonavena and Jimmy Ellis. He did lose it as he aged though. The Ring top 10: Muhammad Ali Leotis Martin Joe Frazier Al Jones George Chuvalo Jerry Quarry Buster Mathis Gregorio Peralta Oscar Bonavena Dave Zyglewicz |
