End of March 1971 news
Al Jones (28-3-0 with 6 stoppages) will defend his NABF and USBA titles against unknown new yorker Jeff Merritt (17-2-0 with 13 stoppages). Most consider this as a keep busy fight on his way to a real title bout. He is already ranked #1 by IBF so if he can just do enough to keep that position he will be secured a title shot before too long. The Al Jones - Jeff Merritt bout will take place in June.
After it was announced that Larry Middleton (28-2-0 with 8 stoppages) was ranked in the top 5 by IBF and WBC he stated that he wanted to get further up the ranks. Therefore it was a bit of a dissapointment when he earlier today announced that his next opponent will be british Gene Innocent (19-3-0 with 11 stoppages). Gene is coming of a 3rd round stoppage loss against Al Lewis while Larry is coming of a 10th round unanimous decision win against tough german Manfred Markgraf. Larry Middleton - Gene Innocent will take place in June. The ring top 10: Muhammad Ali Leotis Martin Joe Frazier Al Jones George Chuvalo Buster Mathis Gregorio Peralta Oscar Bonavena Dave Zyglewicz Larry Middleton |

Yankee Stadium, New York, USA Co-Feature Gregorio 'Goyo' Peralta 34-10-1 (22) v Oscar 'Ringo' Bonavena 28-6-0 (24) 12 rounds for the LABA and Argentine championship belts. This should conclude a great rivalry as this is the third fight between the two argentines. Oscar Bonavena won the first bout by 11th round KO. Then Gregorio Peralta came back to beat him in the second bout by 5th round TKO. Both fighters seem to be going down the rankings, but the winner here will cement his place in the top of the top. Both are in top shape. 1st: Goyo moves and counters to win the round. 14-4 2nd: Bonavena lands two hard shots and stuns Goyo. He then throws another cross and Peralta is cut from above his right eye. Peralta comes strong towards the end, but still it's Ringos round. 9-16 3rd: Peralta misses with a punch and a counter shot from Bonavena to Peraltas ribs sends him down. He is quickly up but can barely stand up straight. Bonavena gets a bit wild though as he fails to finish the job. 4-15 4th: Bonavena lands another body punch as he has found a weak spot for Peralta. He is send down again. He is up at the count of six. He gets wild once again and Peralta is actually better towards the end. 8-11 5th: Peralta makes Bonavena miss constantly and easily wins the round. 10-0 6th: Peralta wins as he lands punches in bunches. 16-5 Halfway through i have the score: 57-56 for Oscar 'Ringo' Bonavena 7th: Peralta punishes Ringo and sends him down with a hook to the head. Bonavena is up fast. Peralta lands good shots but can't finish the job. 22-3 8th: Peralta outboxes Bonavena. 11-2 9th: Peralta shows nice countering skills. 13-4 10th: Bonavena is the agressor and might have won the round because of that. 7-9 With two rounds to go i have it: 95-93 for Gregorio 'Goyo' Peralta 11th: Bonavena gets the better of many exchanges but both are tiring out. 9-12 I have it: 104-103 for Peralta 12th: Peralta clearly wins the round, and big. 20-3 I have it: 114-112 for Peralta Scorecards are: 113-112 114-112 113-112 All for the winner by unanimous decision and still LABA and Argentine champion, Gregorio Peralta! Gregorio moves to 35-10-1 (22) after a close, but deserved decision. Oscar Bonavena moves to 28-7-0 (24) and is definately out of the top 10. Main Event Muhammad Ali 42-1-0 (34) v Joe Frazier 27-3-0 (26) IIII 15 rounds for the WBA, WBC, WBO belts and the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world. The fourth fight in a legendary and brutal rivalry that everyone will remember for ages. The first fight ended dissapointing by a TKO win for Muhammad Ali in the 5th round. The second fight was the fight where Joe Frazier made his name by stunning Ali to win a 3rd round TKO. Their third fight was the fight which will be most remembered with brutal rounds from 1st to the final 8th where Frazier took the ten count after being down twice before in the bout. It's a fact that Joe was ahead on all three scorecards when he was knocked cold. Both stated to be in shape of their lives, and looking at the two fighters, it doesn't seem like they were lying. Let's get the fight going. 1st: Not a punch lands in the first minute as they seem to be measuring each other. Then Ali comes in and lands a good combination and is quickly countered with a big left by Frazier. Then ali lands a small uppercut from the inside. Frazier then lands a big cross to win the round. 7-13 2nd: Ali starts the round by landing a solid combination. Frazier then counters him with a good punch until Ali lands a huge combo that stuns Joe. Frazier comes back with a strong cross. Ali picks off a shot by Frazier and lands a nice uppercut. Ali ends the round with two quick jabs. 13-8 3rd: Frazier snaps Alis head back with a big uppercut and then further hurts him with a quick left hook that Ali didn't see coming. Frazier senses Ali is hurt and lands a three punch combo. A good right hand scores for Frazier. Another combo from Frazier. A big hook from Frazier. Ali is definately hurt as Frazier throws in bunches. A left hook then sends Ali to the canvas. Ali fights to get up but fails. The Greatest has fallen. 31-0 Joe Frazier KO 3 Muhammad Ali!!! Amazing from Frazier, i did not see that coming. Joe Frazier is the new undisputed heavyweight champion of the world! Joe Frazier moves to 28-3-0 (27) as he picks up the WBA, WBC and WBO belts. Muhammad Ali moves to 42-2-0 (34). This could be a fight of the year candidate even though it only lasted three rounds. Last edited by aaaaaaaaa : 01-12-2008 at 12:50 PM. |

Special news!
Immediately after the third round knockout loss to Joe Frazier, 'The Greatest' Muhammad Ali announced his retiring. He has had an impressive career and has been dominant over a decade, but said that he felt it was time to hang 'em up. He may be most remembered for his four fight rivalry with Joe Frazier who was the only one to ever be a real thread to Ali. He has beaten practically everyone worth a mention in the heavyweight division, although many had hoped he would've stayed around in order to face upcoming fighters like George Foreman and Earnie Shavers.
Muhammads record is 42-2-0 (34) which in itself says a whole lot. Frazier was full of respect for Ali, calling it the end of an era. Many experts though, feel that this is not a permanent retiring and think that he will comeback sometime to possibly fight Frazier again. Last edited by aaaaaaaaa : 01-12-2008 at 12:58 PM. |

End of April 1971 news.
With the world still left stunned after Muhammad Alis retirement, the boxing world must go on.
With the boxing organisations announcing their rankings,Joe Fraziers (28-3-0 with 27 stoppages) next opponent was declared. #1 in all four organistations is Al Jones (28-3-0 with 6 stoppages), but he is looking to fight Leotis Martin (32-7-1 with 18 stoppages) and has turned down the chance to become mandatory challenger to Joe Frazier, although he said that in a few months, when he had beat Leotis Martin, he'll want Joe Frazier. That means we jump down a step, WBA and WBO has Buster Mathis (28-4-0 with 8 stoppages) ranked #2 and WBC #3, therefore should he as expected get past puerto rican Pedro Agosto (20-6-0 with 15 stoppages) in May, he will be in line for the title shot. Should he not, then Gregorio Peralta (35-10-1 with 22 stoppages) is probably the one to count on. Dave Zyglewicz (29-4-0 with 21 stoppages) has announced that his next opponent will be former Joe Frazier opponent Boone Kirkman (18-2-0 with 12 stoppages). The fight between the two will take place in August. EBU champion Jurgen Blin (26-7-0 with 7 stoppages) has announced that he will defend his title against relatively unknown norwegian Bjarne Lingaas (22-7-1 with 7 stoppages) in June. The ring top 10: Joe Frazier Leotis Martin Al Jones George Chuvalo Buster Mathis Gregorio Peralta Dave Zyglewicz Larry Middleton Jerry Quarry Al Lewis |

Madison Square Garden, New York, USA Co-Feature Buster Mathis 28-4-0 (8) v Pedro Agosto 20-6-0 (15), 10 rounds Mathis is the 12 to 1 favourite against this unkown puerto rican fighter. A win here will garantee Buster Mathis a title shot against Joe Frazier while an unexpected loss could put him back seriously. Both are in top shape. 1st: Buster wins the round but is in some trouble as he caught a little too often by Agostos shots. 12-9 2nd: Agosto hurts Mathis with good straight shots over and over. 7-19 3rd: Very close actionfilled round as Mathis seems to have underrated his opponent here tonight. 14-11 4th: Mathis wins a close round but still gets caught dangerously easy. 12-8 5th: Mathis eye starts to swell up as Agosto seems to be very fresh while he, Mathis, is tiring out. 8-8 6th: Mathis starts to box well for the first time tonight, Agosto and Mathis is in a clinch where Mathis is cut due to an accidental headbutt. 12-5 7th: Agosto hurts Mathis with big right hands, but fails to finish the obviously stunned Buster Mathis. 8-20 8th: Agosto punishes Buster Mathis and sends him down with a wild overhand right. Buster Mathis gets up, but can't stay on his feet here and the ref stops the fight! Pedro Agosto TKO 8 Buster Mathis!! What a stunner! That might even be bigger than Martins TKO of Frazier! Pedro Agosto moves to 21-6-0 (16) after a shocking bout. Buster Mathis moves to 28-5-0 (8) after a humiliating and poor performance from him. Main Event Leotis Martin 32-7-1 (18) v George Chuvalo 36-10-0 (27) 15 rounds for the IBF championship of the world. After the slightly controversial split decision win for Leotis Martin in January this rematch has been very much anticipated by fightfans all over the world. Leotis Martin has proven himself as a topname recently with his upset win against Joe Frazier and his split decision win against the very same George Chuvalo. The two fighters has fought three times before today. Leotis has won every single time. First time was by a 4th round disqualification of Chuvalo. Second time was by a UD 12. And the third time was that controversial split decision. Both are in top shape. 1st: Both land jabs and crosses as the action is only just starting. 8-6 2nd: It is back and forth non stop action until Chuvalo sends Leotis down with a hook that hit clean. He is up quick. 14-22 3rd: The fighters exchange and Chuvalo gets the better of it. 8-11 4th: Chuvalo sends Martin down with a body punch at the opening bell. Martin gets up but looks very shaken. Chuvalo lands a big hook and sends Martin down again. Martin just barely gets up at the count of 9. Martin survives by clinching the round to an end. 2-22 5th: Chuvalo is just punishing Martin here, he still fights back though. 8-22 6th: Martin starts well countering and moving, but Chuvalo lands one good punch and then it is more punishment. 9-24 7th: Martin gets the better of some big exchanges now. 17-11 8th: Martin is looking very tired as he barely moves around. Chuvalo apparently doesn't want to fight anymore as he doesn't throw a punch the entire round, weird thing as he never looks hurt. 11-0 9th: Chuvalo throws a wild combination and sends Martin down for the count. Martin just lays there and is never close to getting up. George Chuvalo KO 9 Leotis Martin George Chuvalo is the new IBF champion of the world as he moves to 37-10-0 (28) while Leotis Martin moves to 32-8-1 (18) in a fight where he seemed to be in bad condition as he was easy for Chuvalo to lay down and as he tired out fast. |

End of May 1971 news
Joe Frazier(28-3-0 with 27 stoppages) has announced that he will defend his titles against mandatory challenger Gregorio Peralta (35-10-1 with 22 stoppages) in August. Peralta became mandatory challenger by defeating rival Oscar Bonavena (28-7-0 with 24 stoppages) twice. The fight will be for all Fraziers belts and the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world.
Jerry Quarry (27-3-0 with 22 stoppages) has announced that he will make his comeback to the ring against Pedro Agosto (21-6-0 with 16 stoppages) in September. Agosto stunned every boxing expert and most fans out there when he KO'ed top contender Buster Mathis (28-5-0 with 8 stoppages) in the 9th round. Jerry Quarry held a record of 27 wins in 27 bouts and was IBF champion before losing to Joe Frazier and then Al Jones twice. Al Lewis (25-1-2 with 14 stoppages) will face Jack O'Halloran (21-4-0 with 2 stoppages) in July. Al Lewis is on a good streak with wins over fighters such as Mel Turnbow, Giuseppe Ros and Gene Innocent. His only loss came in a upset 2nd round ko by Albert Westphal. Jack O'Halloran won his last fight by split decision against Gerhard Zech. Ken Norton (22-1-0 with 20 stoppages) will fight Chuck Wepner (25-13-1 with 9 stoppages in July. Chuck Wepner is to this date the only fighter to ever beat Ken Norton. The win came via a 10th round disqualification. Ken Norton has since then won his last five bouts while Chuck Wepner has lost his last his last five so there is no doubt that Ken Norton is the big favourite to overcome Chuck. The ring top 10: Joe Frazier 28-3-0 (27) George Chuvalo 37-10-0 (28) Leotis Martin 32-8-1 (18) Al Jones 28-3-0 (6) Gregorio Peralta 35-10-1 (22) Dave Zyglewicz 29-4-0 (21) Larry Middleton 28-2-0 (8) Jerry Quarry 27-3-0 (22) Al Lewis 25-1-2 (14) Ken Norton 22-1-0 (20) If you notice some major changes from the last month to this in the rings rankings, it's because i've changed the system a bit so that i simply follow the fighters' Perf. pts. |

4 fight event Mohegan Sun Casino, Uncasville, USA Opening bout Ted Gullick 11-0-1 (10) v Terry Daniels 8-1-0 (3), 8 rounds A bout between two prospects where both have the chance to prove themself on the big stage. Ted Gullick is a hard hitting slugger, while Terry Daniels is a smart boxer. The two has met once before, and that's how Daniels got his loss by a 5th round KO. Both are in top shape. Back and forth action in the 1st until Daniels is hurt. Daniels wins the second by boxing smoothly. Gullick wins a boring 3rd round. Gullick wins an actionfilled 4th. 5th is close, but Daniels might have edged it. Same story in 6th. Gullick wins 7th. Daniels wins 8th and a point gets taken from Ted Gullick. Support Bout Larry Middleton 28-2-0 (8) v Gene Innocent 19-3-0 (11), 10 rounds This shouldn't be any real test for the smooth boxer Larry Middleton. Both are in top shape. 1st: It already looks like a mistmatch as Larry outboxes Gene. 12-3 2nd: Gene shows some surprisingly good countering ability and would've won the round had it not been for a good combo from Middleton at the end. 11-10 3rd: Nothing much happens and it will be hard to score. 7-7 4th: Larry is momentarily stunned but then recovers and punishes Innocent. 19-8 5th: Very close actionfilled round. 13-12 6th: Gene Innocent hurts Middleton to win a close round. 8-12 7th: Many exchanges that Middleton gets the better of. 19-11 8th: Easy round for Middleton. 13-4 9th: Innocent hurts Middleton to win the round big. 6-18 10th: Innocent wins the last round as Middleton just covers up. 4-9 Scorecards: 97-94 97-93 97-93 All for the winner by unanimous decision .. Larry Middleton! Larry Middleton moves to 29-2-0 (8) without impressing. Gene Innocent moves to 19-4-0 (11). |

Co-Feature
Jurgen Blin 26-7-0 (7) v Bjarne Lingaas 22-7-1 (7) This is an optional defense for Blin. Jurgen Blin might take this fight too lightly as he shows up fat and out of shape. Bjarne shows up in the shape of his life. 1st: Blin is looking best as he hurts the norwegian. 16-6 2nd: Close round with many exchanges. 11-10 3rd: Lingaas wins a close round. 9-11 4th: Another close round, Blin is better though. 9-6 5th: Blin wins as he hurts Lingaas with power shots. 10-4 6th: Both fighters goes forward and this leads to some big exchanges. 12-12 7th: Blin shows great ring generalship here. 15-1 8th: Blin punishes Lingaas who shows some real heart and chin here. 19-0 9th: Counter and move, counter and move for Blin who dominates. 12-1 10th: Blin wins a close round as he controls the ring. 8-5 11th: Lingaas gets a point taken from him for a low blow. Blin dishes out some more punishment. 13-4 Lingaas will need a knockout here. 12th: Easy final round for Blin. 12-2 Scorecards: 116-113 116-113 118-111 All for the winner by unanimous decision and still EBU champion, Jurgen Blin! Jurgen Blin improves to 27-7-0 (7) as he overmatched his opponent, especially in the later rounds. Bjarne Lingaas moves to 22-8-1 (7) but showed heart in taking alot of punishment. |

Al Jones 28-3-0 (6) v Jeff Merritt 17-2-0 (13) 12 rounds for the NABF and USBA titles Al Jones is the big favourite to overcome his less skilled, less experienced, slower opponent. Both are in fine shape. 1st: Nice first round from Al Jones. 14-4 2nd: Neither fighter want's to do very much. 8-4 3rd: Back and forth action that Merritt gets the better of. 10-13 4th: Al Jones lands way more, but Merritt lands way harder. 15-12 5th: Good round from Al Jones. 15-4 6th: Merritt lands hard punches to win the round. 4-8 7th: Good round from Al Jones. 20-6 8th: Another good round from Al Jones. 16-2 9th: Close round. 9-9 10th: Merritt is tiring out and takes punishment. 20-2 11th: Merritt can't hit the faster Al Jones. 14-0 12th and final round: Al Jones fights the smart way as he covers up and counters. 6-4 Scorecards: 117-112 115-113 118-110 All for the winner by unanimous decision and still NABF & USBA champion, Al Jones! I don't understand the 115-113 card, cause in my book this was a brilliant display of boxing skill from Al Jones and even if i am generous i can only find three rounds that could possibly go Merritts way. Al Jones improves to 29-3-0 (6) while Jeff Merritt moves to 17-3-0 (13) |

End of June 1971 news
Newly crowned IBF champ George Chuvalo (37-10-0 with 28 stoppages) has announced that he will defend his title against mandatory challenger Al Jones (29-3-0 with 6 stoppages) in October. George Chuvalo won his title in last month (may) against Leotis Martin (32-8-1 with 18 stoppages by 9th round knockout. Al Jones is coming off six straight wins. Most notable is his two wins against Jerry Quarry (27-3-0 with 22 stoppages).
After Al Jones announcing that he will fight George Chuvalo for the IBF title, NABF and USBA decided to strip him of his titles, meaning that they are now up for grabs. Leotis Martin (32-8-1 with 18 stoppages) is #1 and Larry Middleton (29-2-0 with 8 stoppages) is #2 so there is a big chance that the two will fight. Neither had any comments though. Jurgen Blin (27-7-0 with 7 stoppages) has announced that he will defend his EBU title against Gene Innocent (19-4-0 with 11 stoppages) already in August. The ring rankings: Champ: Joe Frazier 28-3-0 (27) 1. George Chuvalo 37-10-0 (28) 2. Leotis Martin 32-8-1 (18) 3. Al Jones 29-3-0 (6) 4. Gregorio Peralta 35-10-1 (22) 5. Larry Middleton 29-2-0 (8) 6. Dave Zyglewicz 29-4-0 (21) 7. Jerry Quarry 27-3-0 (22) 8. Al Lewis 25-1-2 (14) 9. Henry Clark 32-7-1 (6) 10. Ken Norton 22-1-0 (20) Last edited by aaaaaaaaa : 01-13-2008 at 06:57 AM. |

HP Pavillion, San Jose, CA, USA Co-Feature Al Lewis 25-1-2 (14) v Jack O'Halloran 21-4-0 (2), 10 rounds Al Lewis is the big favourite to overcome the weak punching Jack O'Halloran. Al Lewis shows up in top shape, while O'Halloran looks a bit overweight. 1st: Al Lewis is more active and lands more. 9-5 2nd: Close round with O'Halloran fight back very well but still losing. 8-6 3rd: Al Lewis is not very active and this is not the most entertaining fight. 4-6 4th: Well, two minutes of clinching until Al Lewis lands a hard body shot that puts O'Halloran down. 14-6 5th: Al Lewis finally starts outboxing and overmatching his opponent as he even sends him down for the second time tonight. O'Halloran survives. 22-2 6th: Finally some both way action. O'Halloran is shaken but fights back very well. 10-10 7th: Al Lewis wins an easy round. 8-4 8th: Al Lewis sends O'Halloran down with a body shot. He is up again. O'Halloran only barely survives. 22-6 9th: Lewis wins a close round. 9-6 10th: Al Lewis goes all out in trying to put a KO on the record but fails. 20-0 Scorecards: 99-90 99-89 99-90 All for the winner by unanimous decision Al Lewis. Al Lewis improves to 26-1-2 (14), but i just can't see him beating any of the top guys. Jack O'Halloran moves to 21-5-0 (2) Main Event Ken Norton 22-1-0 (20) v Chuck Wepner 25-13-1 (9), 10 rounds Ken Nortons only loss came by a stupid 10th round disqualification against Chuck Wepner and finally he has gotten his rematch. He is a huge favourite. Both show up in top shape. 1st: Ken Norton seems extremely motivated as he sends Chuck down with a wild combination only 50 seconds into the fight. Chuck is up but looks hurt. Ken Norton bangs away but Chuck shows heart as he survives. 27-3 2nd: A round of pure and simple punishment send from Nortons gloves to Chuck Wepners face. 20-5 3rd: Wepner lands a body punch and weirdly is deducted a point for a low blow that never happened. Ken Norton dishes out some more punishment. He hurts Chuck who is hanging defenseless in the ropes as Norton lands shot after shot until the fight is stopped by the ref. Ken Norton TKO 3 Chuck Wepner Ken Norton improves to 23-1-0 (21) after an extremely impressive showing. Chuck Wepner showed heart by not going down as he moves to 25-14-1 (9) Last edited by aaaaaaaaa : 01-13-2008 at 07:34 AM. |
