Cox Pavillion, Las Vegas, USA Opening bout Jimmy Young 18-0-0 (8) v Jose Urtain 15-3-0 (5), 10 rounds Many experts and fightfans feel that Young could be a champion one day because of his supreme defensive skills and his extremely fast hands. He looks like a copy of the young Ali, with less power in the fists though. His opponent is tought Jose Urtain from Spain. Young is the 13 to 2 favourite. 1st: Young is countering in supreme style. 19-3 2nd: Urtain gets Young into exchanges that allow him to score well, but Youngs faster hands wins the round. 10-6 3rd: Young is not getting this easy, as Urtain manages to pressure him. 15-10 4th: Smooth round from Young as he outboxes Urtain, whose right eye is starting to swell up after the brutally many jabs landed.. 17-2 5th. Young is landing many punches, but can't hurt Urtain. 16-2 6th: If Young had power, this would be over by now. 21-0 7th: Young clearly wins it with his counter punching. The swelling from Urtains right eye is really looking bad 12-3 8th: Young is boxing well, but is stunned towards the end. 16-8 9th: Young keeps landing jab after jab, and Urtain can barely see. The ref breaks in and stops the fight because of the massive swelling. Jimmy Young TKO 9 Jose Urtain Jimmy Young improves to 19-0-0 (9) after giving Urtain a boxing lesson. 1971 awards
Winners will be announced shortly Fighter of the year nominees Joe Frazier 3-0-0 (3) Smokin' started the year by defeating Boone Kirkman by KO in the 8th round. Then he moved on to fight long time rival, Muhammad Ali, for the fourth time. Frazier was alarmingly good as he stopped 'The Greatest' in the 3rd round. In his first defence of the undisputed championship, he pounded Gregorio Peralta to win a 6th round TKO. Al Jones 3-0-0 (1) Al has had the best year of his career as he has gotten his final breakthrough. He started the year by defeating Jerry Quarry for the NABF title, in the 4th round. Then he moved on to defend the title against hard hitting Jeff Merritt. He cruised to win an easy unanimous decision. Then he received his title shot against IBF champ George Chuvalo. He outboxed Chuvalo in every possible way and won a Tech UD 14. Ken Norton 5-0-0 (5) Ken Norton started the year by defeating journeyman, Roger Escude by 3rd round TKO. He then stepped it up in competetion as he stopped tough mexican Manuel Ramos in the 6th round. After that, he got his rematch against Chuck Wepner and gave him a brutal beating until the fight was stopped in the 3rd. In his, at the time, toughest test of his career he stopped Henry Clark in the 8th round to move into the top 10. After long negotiations he got a shot to become WBO mandatory challenger in an eliminator fight against Dave Zyglewicz. Zyglewicz has been a top contender for a long time now, and the fight split the public in their opinions. Zyglewicz send Norton down for the first time of his career, but Norton came back in the following round pounding as he stopped Zyglewicz in the 6th. Newcomer of the year George Foreman 4-0-0 (4) George Foreman got into the top 10 with wins against Carl Gizzi, Eric Saint Louis and Jeff Merritt. All good wins, but nobody thought he would be able to fight and even beat, Oscar Bonavena. When the fight was made, experts were shaking there heads, saying that Foreman would be outboxed. Foreman proved them wrong as he gave Bonavena a brutal beating before giving him the ten count in the 4th round. Earnie Shavers 4-0-0 (4) Shavers started fighting top contender this year as he shot himself into the top 10. He stopped Hans Jørgen Jacobsen and Bernard Thebault from europe until he stopped it up bigtime. He had his toughest fight of his career as he stopped Boone Kirkman in the 9th round. He then moved on to fighting hard hitting italian Dante Cane, who proved to be a very tough test as he showed great heart rising from five knockdowns before the referee finally stopped it. Pedro Agosto 2-0-0 (1) Pedro Agosto has been the succes story of the year. His career was unfolding as a simple journeyman as he fought and lost many places around the world. Then suddenly he hit a good steam in 1970 with wins against Santo Amonti, Jack O'Halloran and Jan Lubbers. This gave him a fight against top contender Buster Mathis, who was the 10 to 1 favourite against the unknown Puerto Rican. Pedro Agosto proved too much for the former IBF world champion as he stunned the world by winning a 9th round KO. This made Jerry Quarry think he would be perfect to fight in his comeback fight. A fighter whom he though he could easily beat and who had a big name after defeating Buster Mathis.Quarry was a 13 to 1 favourite. Jerry Quarry made a big mistake. The fight was extremely close but Agosto clearly proved stronger towards the end. Pedro Agosto was deservedly awarded a split decision win as he stunned the world once again by defeating a former world champ. Last edited by aaaaaaaaa : 01-14-2008 at 09:26 AM. |

Comparisons to Ring Magazine
This is an entertaining universe
. While doing my weekly cleaning last night, I found a copy of The Ring Magazine for October 1970. The Ring's ratings, as of August 1970, were:CH Joe Frazier 1 Jerry Quarry 2 Oscar Bonevena 3 George Chuvalo 4 Sonny Liston 5 George Foreman 6 Mac Foster 7 Jose Urtain 8 Henry Cooper 9 Jimmy Ellis 10 Boone Kirkman I guess it refused to recognize Ali. This thread's ratings were: Muhammad Ali Leotis Martin Joe Frazier Jerry Quarry Buster Mathis Al Jones George Chuvalo Oscar Bonavena Dave Zyglewicz Larry Middleton I think I am enjoying the action from this thread more!!! I'll see if I can find some mags from 1971-1972. |

Amazingly, I have one magazine from the 60s where Mel Turnbow was ranked in the top 50! How has Ernie Terrell fared in your uni? He was up there in the 60s, and maybe I missed reading about him. For me, he is a leader in fouls committed. |

Cow Palace, San Fransisco, CA, USA Opening bout Jimmy Ellis 39-11-0 (16) v Tony Ventura 16-7-3 (11), 10 rounds Ellis makes his comeback after a year and seven months of inactivity against unknows journeyman Tony Ventura. Ellis states that he will become a top 10 contender, and possibly a world champion again. Jimmy Ellis is the 7 to 2 favourite. Ellis wins 1st thru 3rd without impressing too much. Ventura comes strong in the 4th as he hurts Ellis and wins a 26-2 round. Ventura wins 5th and in 6th he sends Ellis down with a big combination. Ellis is up at the count of 7. Ventura wins the round 24-1. Ventura punishes Ellis in the 7th until the fight is stopped. Tony Ventura TKO 7 Jimmy Ellis Well, this should prove that Ellis has lost all the fast reflexes and skills he used to have. Tony Ventura improves to 17-7-3 (12) and Jimmy Ellis moves to 39-12-0 (16) Support Bout George Foreman 21-0-0 (21) v Mac Foster 26-5-2 (22), 10 rounds Foremans looks to keep his impressive knockout streak against former IBF challenger Mac Foster. Foster beat Buster Mathis in his last fight to send himself back into the picture. Foreman holds impressive knockout wins against Billy Walker, Roger Russell, Jeff Merritt and most notable, his 4th round KO win against Oscar Bonavena. Foreman is the 4 to 1 favourite. Foreman only needs 30 seconds to send Foster down with a wicked cross. Foster is up, but Foreman has the chance to finish this. Foreman lands another big cross to send Foster down again. Foster gets up again. Foreman wins a 27-2 round. Foreman wins 2nd and 3rd. In the 4th Foreman pounds Foster to send him staggering across the ring. Foreman then lands punch after punch as Foster is hanging in the ropes and the ref. steps in to stop the fight. George Foreman TKO 4 Mac Foster Foremans just keeps impressing against top contenders as he improves to 22-0-0 (22), he might be too good, meaning that noone will wanna face him. Mac Foster moves to 26-6-2 (22) as he was just overmatched here. Co-Feature Gregorio Peralta 35-11-1 (22) v Pedro Agosto 22-6-0 (16), 12 rounds for the LABA title. Pedro Agosto was a fantastic succes story last year as he beat Buster Mathis and Jerry Quarry to win Newcomer of the year 1971. Peralta is the big favourite to defeat this new 'superstar' Pedro Agosto. Gregorio Peralta is a 14 to 1 favourite. 1st: Agosto rips off some good hooks, but Peralta comes strong towards the end. 9-7 2nd: Agosto lands a sweet hook that stuns Peralta. Peralta recovers and lands some harmless shots. Agosto rushes in and lands a nice cross. Peralta gets the better of an exchange, but Agosto comes back with a big hook that Peralta absorbs well. 9-13 3rd: Agosto lands the harder shots, but Peralta is landing more. Agosto is very effective with body punches. 10-11 4th: Agosto lands a smashing cross that could've hurt Peralta. Peralta starts countering well. 6-7 5th: Agosto lands a big punch, but Peralta answers by hurting Agosto with a big hook. The fighters are in big exchanges here. 15-13 6th: Both fighters lands some meaningless punches, until Agosto throws a quick left hook that stuns Peralta. 4-9 Halfway through the bout, Agosto is actually infront . 58-56 i have it.7th: Peralta staggers Agosto early. 10-6 8th. Noth much happens as Agosto lands the only significant punch of the round. 2-6 9th. The round is close, until Agosto stuns Peralta towards the end. 5-15 10th. Peralta hurts Agosto as his speed is making a difference. Agosto shows amazing recovery as he answers with a solid hook. 19-6 Two rounds to go, and it still looks like Agost actually might pull this off. I have it 96-94 for Pedro Agosto. 11th. Peralta dominates and sends Agosto down. Agosto is up at the count of 4. Agosto survives. 22-1 I now have it scored 104-104. This is gonna be very very exciting. Could Agosto really pull this off? 12th. Agosto lands a big right hand. Agosto comes better out of an exchange. Peralta lands a sneaky right, and Agosto answers with a sweet uppercut. 6-11 I have it 113-114 for PEDRO AGOSTO. Scorecards... 116-113 Peralta 114-113 Agosto 114-113 For the winner by Split decisiooon.. and STILL LABA champion, GREGORIO PERALTA! Pedro Agostos winning streak have come to an end, but what a perfomance, i still believe that Agosto won this fight. This will definately need rematch. Gregorio Peralta improves to 36-11-1 (22) while Pedro Agosto moves to 22-7-0 (16) Main Event Al Jones 30-3-0 (6) v Al Lewis 26-1-2, 15 rounds for the IBF championship Al Jones is on a good streak lately. Wins against Mac Foster, Jerry Quarry twice, Jeff Merritt and in his last fight against George Chuvalo, he was very impressive as he completely outboxed the Toronto Tank. Al Lewis' most impressive win came 2 and a half year ago against Mac Foster. Since then he has received his first loss against Albert Westphal. He is now on a 8 fight winning streak, although none of the wins were against top competition. My Prediction: Al Jones by Close UD/MD 15. Odds are even. 1st: Close round with both measuring eachother. 7-8 2nd: Al Jones lands better combinations to win the round, but he is cut by a good shot towards the end. 13-10 3rd: Not much happens. 4-5 4th: Jones starts well, but Lewis is very good with combinations and hard shots towards the end. 9-14 5th: Jones dominates. 12-4 6th: There seems to be much more force behind Lewis' punches. 6-8 7th: Jones wins a close round. 8-6 8th: Lewis stuns Jones and wins his best round of the fight. 6-20 9th: The cut above Jones' left eye is looking very bad and the referee stops the fight! The winner by 9th round TKO, because of cuts, and new IBF champion of the woorld, Al Lewis! Al Lewis improves to 27-1-2, while Al Jones moves to 30-4-0 (6) as his streak comes to an end.
