November 1897

November 6, 1897
[LHW] (WBC) Bob Fitzsimmons 26-2-0 (24) v/s Joe Butler 17-5-2 (2)
The first two rounds Fitz looked to be trying to find the range and in the third he found it, dropping Butler twice in the early part of the round. Butler survived the round but looked unsteady going back to his corner. The fourth round was an all out slugfest and the fifth was all Bob's round. Fitz dropped Butler two more times in the fifth but again was unable to finish him off. The sixth was an easy win for Fitz and the seventh saw two more knockdwons for the champ but again he could not finsih his opponent off. Fitz scorred two more knockdowns in the eighth round but Butler found away to survive. Butler stayed on his feet throughout the ninth. The tenth round saw Butler hit the canvas four times but on the fourth he failed to get up giving Fitz a knockout victory. Butler was knocked down twelve times in the contest and appeared very punch drunk when he left the ring, lets hope he is ok.
(WBC) Bob Fitzsimmons 27-2-0 (25) (KO 10) Joe Butler 17-6-2 (2)
Undercard
[MW] Dan Creedon 25-4-2 (19) (KO 6) Charley Johnson 21-4-0 (13)
[BW] Ike Weir 21-6-2 (5) (SD 10) Tommy Kelly 21-6-2 (10)

[FLY] Eddie avery 15-10-4 (7) (UD 8) Mai Sa 8-6-2
[HW] John Morrisey 18-13-4 (4) (KO 1) John C. Heenan 15-10-1 (10)

November 13, 1897
[MW] (WBC) Tommy Ryan 23-0-0 (14) v/s Mike Lucie 20-3-0 (15)
Through three it looks like Lucie has found a way to keep Tommy off him. Its still early but Ryan does seem to be getting frustrated. Rounds four and five were split. Mike Lucie now has a cut over his right eye. The sixth and seventh round were close. Mike Lucie now has some serious swelling around his left eye. The eighth round was close and slow but the ninth round was explosive and mostly for Lucie. The tenth round was all Lucie. Round eleven, Ryan busted Lucie's cut back open and the ref stopped the fight giving Ryan a TKO victory.
(WBC) Tommy Ryan 24-0-0 (15) (TKO 11) Mike Lucie 20-4-0 (15)
Undercard

November 20, 1897
[LW] (WBC) Joe Gans 25-1-0 (7) v/s Frank Erne 23-4-0 (9)
Round one Gans completely dominated but round two Erne took control. Erne continued to control the fight in the third and fourth rounds. The fifth round was a great action round for both fighters. Round six Gans finally found the range and took control. Neither fighter wanted to do much in the seventh round. In the eighth they both let their hands go but Gans seemed to get the better of it. Rounds nine through eleven were all Gans but round twelve looked to go Erne's way. Round thirteen Gans landed a beautiful shot that put Erne on his back but he could not finish him. The fourteenth and the fifteenth appeared to go Gan's way, we'll see what the scorecards say. Scorecards read 145-139, 144-140, and 144-140 all for the winner and still WBC Champion, Joe Gans.
(WBC) Joe Gans 26-1-0 (7) (UD 15) Frank Erne 23-5-0 (9)
Undercard

[FW] (WBC) Young Griffo 23-0-1 (9) v/s George Dixon 22-3-0 (3)
This was a closely contested battle and a great exhibition of boxing skills. In th tenth round Dixon landed a wicked over hand right that caused a large gash on Griffo's forehead, the cut resulted in a stoppage in the twelvth round. We have a new WBC FW Champion.
(WBC) George Dixon 23-3-0 (4) (TKO 12) Young Griffo 23-1-1 (9)

Dixon/Griffo - sounds like a classic there, with Dixon handing Griffo the first loss of his career.

It was a good fight, Griffo was leading on all scorecards before the stoppage. Griffo will recieve a rematch based on the fact he was ahead on the cards.

[FLY] (WBC) Chappie Moran 20-3-1 (5) v/s Alf Gower 15-12-5 (4)
Moran controlled the bout from the opening bell and if he had any kind of punching power surely he would have knocked Gower out early. The fight was stopped in round nine when Gower landed a punch high on Moran's head and apparently injured his hand.
(WBC) Chappie Moran 21-3-1 (6) (TKO 9) Alf Gower 15-13-5 (4)

[HW] (WBC) James Corbett 24-4-1 (5) v/s John Sullivan 20-2-1 (16)
This fight was a stylistic nightmare for both fighters. For the judges it just depended on the style you favored most. Corbett was knocked down once in the third round and Sullivan was never knocked off his feet or even hurt. Neither fighter was cut or swollen at the end of the fight. Sullivan was the busier fighter but only landed 19% of his punches while Corbett relied on his boxing and counterpunching and landed 55% of his punches. Lee MacRae at ringside scored the fight 143-143, the official scorecards were 143-142 Corbett, 144-142 Sullivan, and 144-142 Corbett.
(WBC) James J. Corbett 25-4-1 (5) (SD 15) John L. Sullivan 20-3-1 (16)

December 18, 1897
[WW] (WBC) Owen Ziegler 25-1-2 (10) v/s George Cole 16-2-1 (4)
In the first round Ziegler scored a big knockdown but pretty much every round after he was clearly out boxed. Cole even dropped the champ once in the fourteenth. The cards were all for the winner and new WBC Champ, George Cole.
(WBC) George Cole 17-2-1 (4) (UD 15) Owen Ziegler 25-2-2 (10)
Undercard
[FW] Tommy Warren 18-8-3 (7) (Draw 12) George Seddons 13-6-2 (6)

December 25, 1897
[BW] (WBC) Billy Plimmer 24-2-1 (9) v/s Mike Coburn 12-5-6 (6)
Plimmer beat on Coburn through ten rounds. Coburn was exhausted in round 11 and Plimmer took advantage, he dropped Coburn midway through the round and Coburn could not regain his feet.

Looks like there are a few middleweights lurking around who might give Ryan trouble, including the Corkscrew Kid, who gave him a tussle in real life I believe. LaBlanche and Jack "Non Pareil" Dempsey are no pushovers, either.

I can see him being tested by a few guys but losing right now is questionable. Dempsey is the one fighter that I thought would dominate the division but he has been disappointing. He does own the WBA belt now but the chances of a unification bout is only at 10% right now. The chances go up with every successful title defense.

June 1898

June 4, 1898
[HW] (WBC) James J. Corbett 25-4-1 (5) v/s Joe Goddard 19-5-2 (12)
Corbett was by far the superior boxer but Goddard does have a decent punch. Goddard caught the chump with a big right in the third that put him on the canvas. Corbett survived the round then laid a whoopin on the challenger in the fourth during which a sever cut was opened on Goddard's forehead. The fight was stopped in the eighth due to the cut.
(WBC) James J. Corbett 26-4-1 (6) (TKO 8) Joe Goddard 19-6-2 (12)

June 11, 1898
[MW] (WBC) Tommy Ryan 24-0-0 (15) v/s Jack Bonner 21-2-4 (9)
The first round was close but Ryan edged it in the last thirty seconds. In round two Bonner caught Ryan with a glancing blow that caused a large gash over his right eye and easily won the round. Ryan came out in the third with the cut closed but the first clean shot opened it back up and the ref was quick to stop the fight.
(WBC) Jack Bonner 22-2-4 (10) (TKO 3) Tommy Ryan 24-1-0 (15)
Undercard:
[WW] (WBA) Jim Franey 24-3-2 (21) (TKO 9) Utah Bob Thompson 27-2-3 (15)

June 18, 1898
[LW] (WBC) Joe Gans 26-1-0 (7) v/s Aus. Jack McAuliffe 24-5-0 (17)
Joe Gans is a freakishly good boxer. He just flat out dominated McAuliffe from start to finish and successfully defended his WBC belt for the sixth time. He landed over 600 punches in this fifteen round contest compared to just under 200 by his opponent.
(WBC) Joe Gans 27-1-0 (7) (UD 15) Aus. Jack McAuliffe 24-6-0 (17)

June 25, 1898
[BW] (WBC) Billy Plimmer 25-2-1 (10) v/s George Corfield 19-6-3 (4)
Corfield appeared to be a game opponent for Plimmer but it turned out quite different. Plimmer toyed with Corfield early on until he got his big opening in the fifth round. Plimmer stepped in with a big uppercut and down goes Corfield for an eight count. Corfield survived the rest of the round but in the sixth Plimmer found the same opening and Corfield could not reach his feet this time.

[LHW] (WBC) Bob Fitzsimmons 27-2-0 (25) v/s Mervine Thompson 17-5-1 (11)
Thompson appeared to be too heavy handed for the champion in the first round as he just knocked Fitz all around the ring. In the second the challenger scored a big knockdown on the champion. Fitz found his range in round 3 scoring a knockdown of his own. In the fourth neither fighter went after the other. The fifth round Fitz decided to let his hands go and was constantly battering the challenger, the ref stopped the fight with 35 seconds left in the fifth giving the champion a TKO victory.
(WBC) Bob Fitzsimmons 28-2-0 (26) (TKO 5) Mervine Thompson 17-6-1 (11)Undercard:

[WW] (WBC) George Cole 17-2-1 (4) v/s Billy Gardner 13-2-2 (6)
Neither fighter looked like they wanted to fight tonight. The first round was even by all accounts, the second round Gardner did just a little more, and the third Cole did just a little more. In the fourth Cole walked into a straight right and fell flat on his back. He never regained his feet.
(WBC) Billy Gardner 14-2-2 (7) (KO 4) George Cole 17-3-1 (4)
Undercard:
[MW] (WBA) Jack Dempsey 28-3-1 (16) (KO 6) Harris Martin 26-3-0 (16)

July 16, 1898
[FW] (WBC) George Dixon 23-3-0 (15) v/s Young Griffo 23-1-1 (9) {Round 2}
Griffo lost his belt to Dixon last year by technical knockout. This time the cut was not caused by a punch but by a clash of heads and it wasn't Griffo that was cut it was Dixon. The fight continued into the thirteenth round before it was stopped.
(WBC) Young Griffo 24-1-1 (9) (TD MD 13) George Dixon
*There will be a Griffo/Dixon {Round 3}

July 23, 1898
[FLY] (WBC) Chappie Moran 21-3-1 (6) v/s Willie Smith 10-5-2 (3)
This fight wasn't even close, Moran was simply the better fighter from the beginning. Smith stayed in there taking his beating and looked somewhat relieved that the fight was stopped due to a cut over his left eye in the eleventh round.
(WBC)Chappie Moran 22-3-1 (7) (TKO 11/cuts) Willie Smith 10-6-2 (3)Undercard:
