That Young Griffo/George Dixon rivalry appears to be one for the ages.

And how about that Jack Bonner?

Gans wooped one of the very best fighters in McAuliffe.

and Plimmer seems to be your own Universe's brand of superstar.

All kinds of fun results. Glad I had a chance to catch up on HOBO.

Griffo/Dixon has turned into my favorite matchup so far. The third fight promises to be a good one.

Bonner shocked the world knocking off the P4P champ. Ryan now has to earn another shot at the belt.

Gans might be the new pound for pound king with Ryan getting dropped. If he cruises through the Dobbs fight it might be hard to argue with that.

I like Billy Plimmer but his division is fairly weak right now. His next matchup is with a pre-prime McGovern so he might just slip by that one.

November 1898

November 5, 1898
[HW] (WBC) James Corbett 26-4-1 (6) v/s Hank Griffin 21-3-2 (14)
This was a close fight. Griffin's power shots hurt the Champ often and won him some rounds. Corbett managed to use his boxing skills to keep Griffin off him in the other rounds. The Champ was beaten up in this fight, he had some swelling around his left eye and a cut from an accidental headbutt over the same eye. All scorecards were for Corbett but were very close.
(WBC) James Corbett 27-4-1 (6) (UD 15) Hank Griffin 21-4-2 (14)
Undercard:
[HW] (WBA) Jack Johnson 19-1-1 (10) (UD 12) Peter Maher 24-5-1 (16)

November 12, 1898
[LHW] Bob Fitzsimmons 28-2-0 (26) v/s Jack Root 11-2-1 (4)
The youngster, Root, was just out matched in this fight. He gave a valiant effort in the first round going blow for blow with Fitzsimmons. In the second round Fitz kept the pace up and Root just folded under the pressure and power of the Champ.
(WBC) Bob Fitzsimmons 29-2-0 (27) (KO 2) Jack Root 11-3-1 (4)
Undercard:
[LHW] (WBA) Joe Choynski 31-1-1 (26) (Draw 12) Jean-Claude Mangin 22-1-2 (9)

[MW] (WBC) Jack Bonner 22-2-4 (10) v/s George LaBlanche 21-4-1 (9)
Bonner shocked the world with his victory over Tommy Ryan to win the title. This was his first defense of the belt and it went all wrong. LaBlanche laid a serious beating on the champ from the opening bell to the final. The only good thing Bonner can say is he made it the distance.
(WBC) George LaBlanche 22-4-1 (9) (UD 15) Jack Bonner 22-3-4 (10)
Undercard:
[MW] (WBA) Jack Dempsey 29-3-1 (16) (UD 12) Charles McCoy 28-5-0 (21)

November 26, 1898
[WW] (WBC) Billy Gardner 14-2-2 (7) v/s LA Kid Williams 11-1-1 (3)
After being knocked down in the first round, Gardner kept his distance and began counter-punching. Williams felt he had the champ where he wanted him but in the fourth Gardner caught him with a big hook to the chin that dropped him flat on his back. Williams was unable to make it back to his feet giving Gardner a knockout victory and a successful title defense.

[LW] (WBC) Joe Gans 27-1-0 (7) v/s Bobby Dobbs 29-4-1 (17)
After the first three rounds the genral feeling is that Gans should keep his distance and box Dobbs. In the first two rounds Gans tried to exchange punches and failed miserably especially in the second when he was knockeddown. Through the sixth round it is becoming evident that Gans is clearly a more skilled fighter but you can't count out Dobbs yet. Through round eleven it was more of the same but in round twelve Dobbs kept Gans at a close distance and stole the round. Rounds 13 and 14 were close, in the 15th round Dobbs scored another big knockdown but couldn't finish Gans off. The scorecards read 143-139, 141-141, and 142-140.
(WBC) Joe Gans 28-1-0 (7) (MD 15) Bobby Dobbs 29-5-1 (17)
Undercard:
[LW] (WBA) Billy Ernst 25-4-0 (11) (UD 12) Jack McAullife 28-4-0 (21)
[FW] Fred Bogan 18-6-1 (10) (KO 7) Oscar Gardner 20-5-3 (9)
[LHW] Charles Hadley 19-5-4 (6) (Maj. Draw 10) Jack O'Brien 17-2-1 (1)
[HW] Dick Matthews 22-6-2 (14) (KO 8) Duncan McDonald 15-10-5 (3)
[LW] George Dawson 11-7-0 (5) (UD 8) Walter Edgerton 16-10-4 (2)

December 10, 1898
[FW] (WBC) Young Griffo 24-1-1 (9) v/s George Dixon 23-4-0 (4) {Round 3}
WOW! Another great fight between two amazing fighters. The rounds went back and forth from the opening bell in this third fight between these two men. The ref played a huge part tonight as he was constantly stopping the action to warn Dixon for something. Dixon even had a point removed in one round for holding and hitting. In the fifteenth round both fighters were going at it, there was a clinch and the ref had to seperate the fighters as the ref moved back Dixon threw a punch and the ref stopped the fight. The ref raised Griffo's hand as the victor because he claimed the punch was a blatant foul. Griffo was even begging him to let the fight continue but the decision had been made.
(WBC) Young Griffo 25-1-1 (9) (DQ 15) George Dixon 23-5-0 (4) (1:55 left in the fight)
Undercard:
[FW] (WBA) Dick Hollywood 20-2-3 (12) (TKO 8) Esko Gronholm 54-11-1 (21)
[MW] Tommy Ryan 25-1-0 (16) (TKO 9) Charles Turner 26-6-0 (19)
*Ryan's first appearance in the ring since losing to Bonner
[LW] Danny Duane 11-4-2 (4) (SD 10) Tommy Cleary 11-4-1 (3)
[FW] Jimmy Lawler 9-7-2 (2) (UD 8) Tommy Danforth 13-9-2 (5)
[LW] Jack Hall 13-10-5 (2) (KO 4) Jim Barron 17-10-1 (8)

December 17, 1898
[BW] (WBC) Billy Plimmer 26-2-1 (11) v/s Terry McGovern 11-1-0 (8)
Plimmer has great boxing skills but tonight his strategy was to rough up the younger fighter. The strategy back fired when McGovern caught him with a uppercut/hook combo in the eleventh. Plimmer's body was limp before he hit the canvas, the ref counted him out even while his corner was sprinting into the ring. Plimmer was out just for a few moments but they carted him out of the ring just to be safe. That was a tremendous combo that won McGovern the championship.
(WBC) Terry McGovern 12-1-0 (9) (KO 11) Billy Plimmer 26-3-1 (11)
Undercard:
[BW] (WBA) Jimmy Barry 21-3-2 (16) (TKO 11/cuts) Sang-hoon Kim 20-3-1 (5)

[LW] Jack Goldswain 13-2-0 (6) (TKO 3) Harry Gilmore 22-8-3 (15)
[FW] Jimmy Dime 17-7-3 (11) (MD 8) George Seddons 13-7-3 (6)
[HW] Billy Wilson 18-8-1 (10) (KO 4) Jim McCormick 7-8-4 (1)

December 24, 1898
[FLY] (WBC) Chappie Moran 22-3-1 (7) v/s Jimmy Gorman 20-3-0 (14)
Gorman may not be the most intelligent fighter but he always is ready to go to war. Tonight he did just that but again he fell just short of winning the championship, losing a split decision.
(WBC) Chappie Moran 23-3-1 (7) (SD 15) Jimmy Gorman 20-4-0 (14)
Undercard:
[FLY] (WBA) Al Rheaume 29-1-1 (8) (KO 8) Masnsen Bagatui 16-2-3 (5)

Rumor Mill

Young Griffo
There is a possibility that Young Griffo will not be defending his title against Will Curley. Rumor has it that he will vacate the belt to seek a rematch with George Dixon. The WBC stated that they have not recieved any word from Griffo's management regarding this matter but one of my sources close to the Dixon camp has reported seeing Griffo's people around. If Griffo vacates the belt it will mark the first time in history a fighter has done so. Griffo was not happy about the stoppage in the last fight with Dixon and has stated that he feels like he was given the title and did not earn it. As a fan I want to see another fight between these two. With or without the belt, one of these two men is truly the king of the division.

Light Heavy Titles
The WBA LHW Champ, Joe Choynski, has recieved a one year suspension from boxing for assaulting WBC LHW Champ, Bob Fitzsimmons. The commissioner has given his approval for the scheduled title defense to take place. The suspension will start after the fight. Fitzsimmons recieved a $100 fine for his involvement in the dispute. Noone could be reached to comment on this matter.

Rumor update:

Young Griffo and George Dixon will fight again. The Commisioner stepped into the picture when he heard the rumor that Griffo would vacate and worked out a contract offer. If Griffo defends his belt he will fight Dixon for the title. If Griffo loses he and Dixon will fight anyway. It looks like "Round 4" will happen later this year.

The Commissioner actually commented on the Choysnki situation saying, "Joe and Bob did have an altercation but there were no punishments handed out. They did recieve a warning that if something like this happens again that there would be a punishment.". The Commisioner also spoke about the possible unification fight between those two, "Due to large public demand we are working with the WBC and WBA regarding a unification fight of the light heavyweight title. There are a lot of details to iron out but we have taken the first step toward making it happen.".

What are the total nubers for LHW and all fighters at this stage Brooks?

Also, have you had to fight at catch weights through the lower levels just to avoid fighting the same opponents over and over. You'd almost have to at LHW I would assume.

I am just curious as to how all the numbers are working out.

Haven't checked the numbers exactly but it is very thin. I have moved some heavies down into the division and some bantams down to fly. It gives a decent group of competitive fighters, they also will fight some tcs to make up for the lack of fighters. I'm hoping with the Olympic fighters coming in I will build some depth a little faster.
