1802 Gallery of the Gallant Ballot
![]() Attention: Voting membership of the Royal Explorers Club Balloting for the 1802 Gallery of the Gallant is now open and will remain so for two days. You may cast a ballot for any, all or none of the following retired pugilists: Chevalier de Saint Georges (HW) 1780 - 1797W7(2) / L5(3) / D2 - French Heavyweight Champion de Saint Georges was the French Champion though he earned that title with a victory over a smaller man. A man of many talents who merely dabbled with the prize ring. This is the Chevalier's fifth and final time on the ballot. Full Record Bob Watson (MW) 1788 - 1798W17(2) / L7(0) / D4 Watson was a fine middleweight who assembled a 17-2-4 record before meeting Paddington Tom Jones for the World title in 1796. He lost that fight and four more before calling it a career. This is Watson's fourth time on the ballot. Full Record Beef A-La-Mode (MW) 1786 - 1798W4(2) / L18(2) / D3 Frenchman Beef A-La-Mode fought once for the English MW title and three times for the French HW honors. He had about as much success as you would expect a man named A-La-Mode to have in the ring. This is Beef's fourth time on the ballot. Full Record Paddington Tom Jones (MW) 1786 - 1799W15(3) / L11(3) / D1 - World Middleweight Champion Jones was the first World Middleweight champion to be crowned by the Royal Explorers Club. He lost the belt on his first defense to Tinman Hooper who beat him a total of six times over the years. This is Jones' third time on the ballot Full Record Gentleman John Jackson (HW) 1788 - 1800W17(12) / L6(3) / D4 - World & English Heavyweight Champion Jackson took the English title from Ben Bryan in 1793. He laid down that belt prior to meeting Bryan in 1796 for the first REC World title. Jackson won but later lost the honors to Bryan subsequently drawing three times in attempts to win it back. This is Jackson's second time on the ballot. Full record Elisha Crabbe (HW) 1788 - 1801W7(2) / L17(8) / D1 Crabbe was knocked out by Mendoza in his only bid for the English title. Full record Isaac Perrins (HW) 1789 - 1801W14(11) / L11(5) / D1 - English Heavyweight Champion Perrins was a 300 giant with little skill. He claimed the English belt with a stunning knockout of an aging Mendoza but lost the title in his first defense to Big Ben Bryan Full record One Eye Sailor (MW) 1786 - 1801W8(1) / L21(5) / D2 - English Middleweight Champion Held the English middleweight honors for three months but had little else to crow over. Full record Jack Doyle (HW) 1788 - 1800W15(5) / L18(7) / D3 - Irish Heavyweight Champion Defeated Duggan Fearns in Dublin for the Irish title and dropped it to Michael Ryan in Wicklow. Full record Bill Love (HW) 1786 - 1801W9(7) / L22(11) / D1 Love had a big punch and little else. Full record Bill Jones (HW) 1787 - 1801W3(1) / L21(9) / D2 Jones opened his career by pushing Mendoza to a full fifteen in a losing effort but things got worse for him after that. Much worse. Full record Sincerely, Lord Cornelius Acton President, Royal Explorers Club of Glasgow. Visit the Gallery of the Gallant |

Bob Watson and Gentleman John Jackson. Watson has to make it this time he's a clear cut Hall of Famer. The dude would probably have been World Champion if the REC had appeared earlier. Tinman Hooper a 2 time English MW champion, a World MW champion, and a owner of a 6-0 record against Paddington Tom Jones went 0-3-2 against Watson. Watson also beat Spaniard Harris, a former World Champ. He was the number 1 ranked English MW for pretty much his whole career but the English champs ducked him or he would have won that belt. What else do y'all need to let someone into the HOF he's beaten World Champions and was the best fighter in the country in his weightclass for a number of years.

Oh, one more point for Watson I've decided to go back and reread the thread and I had forgotten the Jones/Watson World Title bout was a screwjob in favor of Jones. Watson would have been World champ if it wasn't for a shady ref.

I've been extolling the virtues of Mr. Watson for some time now. If we don't get him in there soon, his time will be past. It would be a sad, sorry miscarriage of justice should this happen.

I love the occasional dreadful decision which is why I am maximizing the chances using a lone ref as arbitor and the rounds system. That one though was bad even for my tastes. The ringside hero had Watson well ahead and I thought there was utterly no doubt about it myself. Putrid call. ![]()

Gotta go with Watson. If they don't let him in we will be forced to open a people's hall of fame.
